Intercomparison of Thermophysical Property Measurements on an Austenitic Stainless Steel

The results of an inter laboratory comparison of thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, specific heat capacity, and thermal expansion measurements on austenitic stainless steel in the temperature range between 20 and 1000°C are presented here. Mean values are presented for the physical properties studied. Reliable relative expanded uncertainties can be stated for the properties determined, which were achieved by applying good measurement practice, i.e., 3% for thermal expansion, 5% for specific heat capacity and thermal diffusivity, and 6% for thermal conductivity. The mean values derived from this intercomparison agree well with the results of a previous intercomparison in 1990. An erratum to this article is availabale at .     

Two-handed volumetric document corpus management

To find a document in the sea of information, you must embark on a search process, usually computer-aided. In the traditional information retrieval model, the final goal is to identify and collect a small number of documents to read in detail. In this case, a single query yielding a scalar indication of relevance usually suffices. In contrast, document corpus management seeks to understand what is happening in the collection of documents as a whole (i.e. to find relationships among documents). You may indeed read or skim individual documents, but only to better understand the rest of the document set. Document corpus management seeks to identify trends, discover common links and find clusters of similar documents. The results of many single queries must be combined in various ways so that you can discover trends. We describe a new system called the Stereoscopic Field Analyzer (SFA) that aids in document corpus management by employing 3D volumetric visualization techniques in a minimally immersive real-time interaction style. This interactive information visualization system combines two-handed interaction and stereoscopic viewing with glyph-based rendering of the corpora contents. SFA has a dynamic hypertext environment for text corpora, called Telltale, that provides text indexing, management and retrieval based on n-grams (n character sequences of text). Telltale is a document management and information retrieval engine which provides document similarity measures (n-gram-based m-dimensional vector inner products) visualized by SFA for analyzing patterns and trends within the corpus     

Dealing with nonfunctional requirements in large software systems

Quality improvement such as increased reliability and maintainability are of utmost importance in software development. In this field, which was previously ad hoc and unpredictable rather than customer‐oriented, increasing competition and focus on customer satisfaction have motivated management to put more emphasis on quality issues. This paper provides insight in techniques for dealing with what customers call generic quality attributes and what software engineers call nonfunctional requirements. Since requirements management more than many other disciplines in software engineering need practical insight, examples are provided for dealing with four nonfunctional requirements in large telecommunication systems, namely performance, usability, reliability, and maintainability. Guidelines are presented for specifying, constructing, analyzing, measuring and tracing nonfunctional requirements. Many examples from telecommunication system development show how to specifically and pragmatically deal with nonfunctional requirements. Extracts from three common standards (SEI CMM, ISO 9000–3, BELLCORE suite) are added in the form of a checklist for underlining the importance of proper requirements management from a customer viewpoint.     

Oscillation and convergence behaviours exhibited in an ‘unstable’ second‐order digital filter with saturation‐type non‐linearity

This letter explains the oscillatory behaviours exhibited in a second‐order digital filter with saturation‐type non‐linearity via the Hopf bifurcation theorem. It is shown that depending on the bifurcation parameter, the state variables may converge to zero even when the eigenvalues of the system matrix are outside the unit circle. Low Doses of PFOA Promote Prostate and Breast Cancer Cells Growth through Different Pathways

Endocrine Disrupting Compounds (EDCs) are found in everyday products. Widely distributed throughout the environment, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are a specific class of EDCs that can accumulate in adipose tissue. Many of them induce adverse effects on human health—such as obesity, fertility disorders and cancers—by perturbing hormone effects. We previously identified many compounds with EDC activity in the circulation of obese patients who underwent bariatric surgery. Herein, we analyzed the effects of four of them (aldrin, BDE28, PFOA and PCB153) on two cancer cell lines of hormone-sensitive organs (prostate and breast). Each cell line was exposed to serial dilutions of EDCs from 10⁻⁶ M to 10⁻¹² M; cytotoxicity and proliferation were monitored using the IncuCyte^® technology. We showed that none of these EDCs induce cytotoxicity and that PFOA and PCB153, only at very low doses (10⁻¹² M), increase the proliferation of DU145 (prostate cancer) and MCF7 (breast cancer) cells, while the same effects are observed with high concentrations (10⁻⁶ M) for aldrin or BDE28. Regarding the mechanistic aspects, PFOA uses two different signaling pathways between the two lines (the Akt/mTORC1 and PlexinD1 in MCF7 and DU145, respectively). Thus, our study demonstrates that even at picomolar (10⁻¹² M) concentrations PFOA and PCB153 increase the proliferation of prostate and breast cancer cell lines and can be considered possible carcinogens.     

Long COVID: Association of Functional Autoantibodies against G-Protein-Coupled Receptors with an Impaired Retinal Microcirculation

Long COVID (LC) describes the clinical phenotype of symptoms after infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Diagnostic and therapeutic options are limited, as the pathomechanism of LC is elusive. As the number of acute SARS-CoV-2 infections was and is large, LC will be a challenge for the healthcare system. Previous studies revealed an impaired blood flow, the formation of microclots, and autoimmune mechanisms as potential factors in this complex interplay. Since functionally active autoantibodies against G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCR-AAbs) were observed in patients after SARS-CoV-2 infection, this study aimed to correlate the appearance of GPCR-AAbs with capillary microcirculation. The seropositivity of GPCR-AAbs was measured by an established cardiomyocyte bioassay in 42 patients with LC and 6 controls. Retinal microcirculation was measured by OCT–angiography and quantified as macula and peripapillary vessel density (VD) by the Erlangen-Angio Tool. A statistical analysis yielded impaired VD in patients with LC compared to the controls, which was accentuated in female persons. A significant decrease in macula and peripapillary VD for AAbs targeting adrenergic β2-receptor, MAS-receptor angiotensin-II-type-1 receptor, and adrenergic α1-receptor were observed. The present study might suggest that a seropositivity of GPCR-AAbs can be linked to an impaired retinal capillary microcirculation, potentially mirroring the systemic microcirculation with consecutive clinical symptoms.     

A Novel Neurofilament Light Chain ELISA Validated in Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease,Frontotemporal Dementia,and Subjective Cognitive Decline,and the Evaluation of Candidate Proteins for Immunoassay Calibration

Neurofilament light chain (Nf-L) is a well-known biomarker for axonal damage; however, the corresponding circulating Nf-L analyte in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is poorly characterized. We therefore isolated new monoclonal antibodies against synthetic peptides, and these monoclonals were characterized for their specificity on brain-specific intermediate filament proteins. Two highly specific antibodies, ADx206 and ADx209, were analytically validated for CSF applications according to well-established criteria. Interestingly, using three different sources of purified Nf-L proteins, a significant impact on interpolated concentrations was observed. With a lower limit of analytical sensitivity of 100 pg/mL using bovine Nf-L as the calibrator, we were able to quantify the Nf-L analyte in each sample, and these Nf-L concentrations were highly correlated to the Uman diagnostics assay (Spearman rho = 0.97, p < 0.001). In the clinical diagnostic groups, the new Nf-L ELISA could discriminate patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD, n = 20) from those with frontotemporal lobe dementia (FTD, n = 20) and control samples with subjective cognitive decline (SCD, n = 20). Henceforth, this novel Nf-L ELISA with well-defined specificity and epitopes can be used to enhance our understanding of harmonizing the use of Nf-L as a clinically relevant marker for neurodegeneration in CSF.     

Long-term effects of dissolved carbonate species on the degradation of trichloroethylene by zerovalent iron

The effect of different concentrations of total inorganic carbon (TIC) and flow rates on the reactivity of iron metal with trichloroethylene (TCE) was studied in column experiments to verify whether concentration or mass flux of TIC is the major key parameter for barrier performance. First-order rate coefficients (kobs) for TCE degradation vary initially between 0.15 and 0.32 h-' and are positively related to TIC influent concentration. Maximal kobs were reached after 164 and 591 PV, varied between 0.55 and 1.1 h(-1), and were positively correlated to the TIC mass flux, followed by a decrease resulting in values similar to the reference system at the end of the experiments. Enhancement of iron corrosion (0.7 to 3.5 mmol kgFe(-1) d(-1) and formation of gas bubbles during the initial experimental phase were observed and were also positively correlated to TIC mass flux. The higher gas bubble formation probably has a more significant effect on porosity than mineral precipitations in Fe0-systems. The results suggest that higher TIC mass fluxes cause a more pronounced acceleration in CHC degradation, but also a faster inhibition in the longer-term. This faster inhibition has serious implication for the design of funnel and gate systems.     

The pigments of cottonseed

Summary A method for the purification of gossypol has been developed which yields material differing in optical properties from those previously reported for gossypol preparations. A colorimetric test for extractable gossypol has been described. It has been shown that cottonseed contains at least three pigments in addition to gossypol. Some of the properties of the three pigments have been reported. One of these newly detected pigments, gossypurpurin, has been shown to be the substance which, mixed with gossypol, constitutes the so-called “red gossypol” of Podol’skaja. The frequently reported water-dispersable blue pigment of cottonseed has been shown to be either a complex of gossypol, gossypurpurin and protein or a mixture of two protein-pigment complexes.
