The use of mixed gas working fluids has become common in Joule-Thomson type cryocoolers for a variety of applications. However, there is very little data or theory currently available regarding the heat transfer coefficient associated with these multi-component, multi-phase mixtures at cryogenic temperatures. This paper describes an experimental test facility and procedure that has been used to make careful measurements of the horizontal, flow boiling heat transfer coefficient for several hydrocarbon mixtures that are nominally optimal for small, Joule-Thomson cryocoolers in the 80 K to 120 K operating range. Data are presented over a range of temperatures from 100 K to room temperature and for several pressures and mass flow rates. The results indicate that quality and mass flux are the most important parameters governing the heat transfer coefficient among those that were varied. The experiment is verified by carrying out tests using single-phase, pure nitrogen gas and comparing the results with the Dittus-Boelter equation. The experimental uncertainty of the measurements is estimated from 1st principles; additionally, the repeatability of the experimental measurements was investigated by replicating tests at a nominal set of operating conditions and composition on separate days. This paper describes the results of a microscopic treatment of carrier-carrier scattering effects in the optical gain and refractive index spectra of a quantum-well semiconductor laser structure. The approach uses the Semiconductor Maxwell Bloch equations to describe the interaction between the carriers and the laser field, in the presence of many-body Coulomb interactions. Coulomb correlation effects are treated at the level of quantum kinetic theory in the Markovian limit. This paper presents a formulation of the facilities block layout problem which explicitly considers uncertainty in material handling costs on a continuous scale by use of expected values and standard deviations of product forecasts. This formulation is solved using a genetic algorithm meta-heuristic with a flexible bay construct of the departments and total facility area. It is shown that depending on the attitude of the decision-maker towards uncertainty, the optimal design can change significantly. Furthermore, designs can be optimized directly for robustness over a range of uncertainty that is pre-specified by the user. This formulation offers a computationally tractable and intuitively appealing alternative to previous stochastic layout formulations that are based on discrete scenario probabilities. 相似文献

To maximize the efficiency of cooling and freezing operations for foods, it is necessary to optimally design the refrigeration equipment to fit the specific requirements of the particular cooling or freezing application. The design of food refrigeration equipment requires estimation of the cooling and freezing times of foods, as well as the corresponding refrigeration loads. The accuracy of these estimates, in turn, depends upon accurate estimates of the surface heat transfer coefficient for the cooling or freezing operation. This project reviewed heat transfer data for the cooling and/or freezing of foods. A total of 777 cooling curves for 295 food items were obtained from an industrial survey and a unique iterative algorithm, utilizing the concept of ‘equivalent heat transfer dimensionality’, was developed to obtain heat transfer coefficients from these cooling curves. Nine Nusselt–Reynolds–Prandtl correlations were developed from a selection of the 777 heat transfer coefficients resulting from this algorithm, as well as 144 heat transfer coefficients for 13 food items, collected from the literature. The data and correlations resulting from this project will be used by designers of cooling and freezing systems for foods. This information will make possible a more accurate determination of cooling and freezing times and corresponding refrigeration loads. Such information is important in the design and operation of cooling and freezing facilities and will be of immediate usefulness to engineers involved in the design and operation of such systems. 相似文献

A surface-micromachined micro-electro-mechanical-system (MEMS) process has been used to demonstrate multiple-input chemical sensing using selectively coated cantilever arrays. Cantilever motion due to absorption-induced stress was readout using a custom-designed, eight-channel integrated circuit. Three-dimensional integration is an emerging fabrication technology that vertically stacks multiple integrated chips. The benefits include an increase in device density; much greater flexibility in routing signals, power, and clock; the ability to integrate disparate technologies; and the potential for new 3D circuit and microarchitecture organizations. This article provides a technical introduction to the technology and its impact on processor design. There is limited research on trade-offs in demand between manual and voice interfaces of embedded and portable technologies. Mehler et al. identified differences in driving performance, visual engagement and workload between two contrasting embedded vehicle system designs (Chevrolet MyLink and Volvo Sensus). The current study extends this work by comparing these embedded systems with a smartphone (Samsung Galaxy S4). None of the voice interfaces eliminated visual demand. Relative to placing calls manually, both embedded voice interfaces resulted in less eyes-off-road time than the smartphone. Errors were most frequent when calling contacts using the smartphone. The smartphone and MyLink allowed addresses to be entered using compound voice commands resulting in shorter eyes-off-road time compared with the menu-based Sensus but with many more errors. Driving performance and physiological measures indicated increased demand when performing secondary tasks relative to ‘just driving’, but were not significantly different between the smartphone and embedded systems.
Practitioner Summary: The findings show that embedded system and portable device voice interfaces place fewer visual demands on the driver than manual interfaces, but they also underscore how differences in system designs can significantly affect not only the demands placed on drivers, but also the successful completion of tasks. 相似文献
