The influence of cryoground rubber (CGR) on the curing characteristics, physical properties, network structure, and failure behavior of natural rubber (NR) has been investigated. CGR was added at two different levels of curatives and in two different ways (i) in powder form and (ii) in mill-sheeted form (obtained by mechanical treatment of CGR in a two-roll mill). The form of CGR and level of curatives affect the processing characteristics and technical properties of CGR–NR blends. The acetone extractables in the CGR were found to affect the curing characteristics, but no significant effect on the physical properties was observed. Model mixes were prepared by adding partially vulcanized NR compound in the matrix of the same compound. A three-layer model was set up to study the diffusion of sulfur from the NR matrix phase to the CGR phase. Scanning electron microscope studies of the fractured surface revealed that the mechanical treatment of CGR effects improved adhesion of CGR to NR matrix and the compatibility between the two phases. CGR acts as an inert filler in NR.  相似文献

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) has been functionalized in the bulk through dicumyl peroxide (DCP)-initiated grafting of dibutyl maleate (DBM) and vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMO) in the temperature range from 140 to 200°C. The functionalized surfaces have been characterized through contact angle and contact-angle hysteresis measurements as well as through ESCA studies. The degree of grafting has been determined by infrared spectrophotometry. From the ESCA patterns of the modified polymers, the atomic ratios of oxygen to carbon and silicon to carbon have been calculated. Determination of an empirical relation between contact-angle hysteresis and the oxygen-carbon ratio of the functionalized polymer surfaces has been attempted. It is found that the higher the oxygen-carbon ratio, the lower the contact-angle value for polyethylene. Contact angle-hysteresis increases with increase of the degree of grafting. The total surface energy increases with grafting. The surface energy of the silane-grafted polyethylene (PEgS) is found to be the lower than that of dibutyl maleate-grafted polyethylene (PEgDBM). © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Surface modified silica fillers have been developed by coating these with a silane coupling agent, triethoxyvinyl silane (TEVS) followed by electron beam irradiation at room temperature. These have been incorporated in an ethylene-octene copolymer rubber. Rheometric, mechanical, volume swelling and aging properties of the gum as well as the filled elastomers have been studied in details. A significant improvement in the above properties has been noticed for these vulcanizates, which clearly emphasizes that novel surface modified silica improves polymer-filler adhesion by the introduction of covalent bonds between the filler surface and the rubber chains. Filler-filler and polymer-filler interactions have been quantified with the help of a mathematical model correlating the modulus and the volume concentration of filler. The influence of electron beam treatment on silanized silica filler has also been demonstrated from the above model.  相似文献

ZrO2 powders have been ground by ball mill grinder to achieve the particle size down to 10 nm. Typical defects introduced during ball mill grinding have been studied by positron annihilation lifetime measurement technique and coincidence Doppler broadened positron annihilation radiation spectroscopic technique. Coincidence Doppler broadened positron annihilation spectra for ball mill ground and unground ZrO2 samples have been analyzed by constructing ratio curve with defects free Al single crystal. Results indicate an increase of cation defects in ZrO2 samples due to the reduction of particle size by the ball mill grinding process.  相似文献

The rubber nanocomposites containing ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) having 60 wt % of vinyl acetate content and organomodified layered double hydroxide (DS‐LDH) as nanofiller have been prepared by solution intercalation method and characterized. The XRD and TEM analysis demonstrate the formation of completely exfoliated EVA/DS‐LDH nanocomposites for 1 wt % filler loading followed by partially exfoliated structure for 5–8 wt % of DS‐LDH content. EVA/DS‐LDH nanocomposites show improved mechanical properties such as tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (EB) in comparison with neat EVA. The maximum value of TS (5.1 MPa) is noted for 3 wt % of DS‐LDH content with respect to TS value of pure EVA (2.6 MPa). The data from thermogravimetric analysis show the improvement in thermal stability of the nanocomposites by ≈15°C with respect to neat EVA. Limiting oxygen index measurements show that the nanocomposites act as good flame retardant materials. Swelling property analysis shows improved solvent resistance behavior of the nanocomposites (1, 3, and 5 wt % DS‐LDH content) compared with neat EVA‐60. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Visualization of polymer molecules by molecular dynamics simulation remains a challenging area in molecular modeling, as it involves a number of factors like type of force field, simulation time, simulation steps, and so forth. In our present study, we have used the condensed-phase optimized molecular potentials for atomistic simulation studies (COMPASS) force field, which is specific for polymers and organic molecules, in order to visualize the macromolecular chains of various flexible amorphous polymers: natural rubber, polybutadiene rubber, styrene–butadiene rubber, nitrile rubber, polychloroprene rubber, and fluoroelastomer. The study covered a wide range from nonpolar rubbers to polar rubbers, and the COMPASS force field was promising to understand the local structure and the packing of the chains inside the simulation box. The distance between different adjacent pairs of carbon atoms within the polymer chains was discussed in detail from intramolecular radial distribution function and represented pictorially in the polymer chains. Various bond angles were also examined for further details. In addition, interchain contacts, glass-transition temperature, and solubility parameter were predicted and compared with the experimental values. The diffusive characteristic of the chains was assessed by mean square displacement which in turn described the polymer chain mobility. In essence, the present study is expected to aid in the vivid conceptualization of molecular orientation of various polymers and would help in predicting various physical properties. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Present study focuses on the development of four layered functionally graded clads (FGC) of Ni-WC based composite material on AISI 304 substrate through microwave heating route. Experimental trials were conducted inside a microwave applicator of domestic type at frequency range of 2.45?GHz. The optimal exposure time of 900?W microwave power was varied with compositional gradient and it was from 300 to 360?s. The mechanism of FGC formation through microwave heating was explained and developed FGC was subjected to mechanical and microstructure characterizations. The results of micro-structural analysis revealed that the FGC of ~1.8?mm thickness was produced and was free from any type of interfacial cracks and visible porosity. It was observed that WC particles were randomly dispersed in the nickel matrix. XRD study revealed the formation of inter-metallics, such as NiW4, NiSi, and Cr23C6. Maximum value of microhardness was observed in the top FGC layer and was 880?±?30?HV.  相似文献
