2,2,4-trimethyl, 1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate (TPM) is a widely used solvent found in water-based coatings. Ambient measurements of TPM are reported here for the first time. Although this compound has been previously measured in indoor air, this study illustrates successful detection and quantification of TPM in ambient air at three locations in Southern California: Pico Rivera, Azusa, and Riverside. TPM was detected in every sample collected, with concentrations ranging from 0.7 to 49.5 parts per trillion (ppt). Collections took place during summer 2009, fall 2009, winter 2009/2010, and spring 2010, for 5-7 days during each season. The highest mean concentrations were observed during the summer months for each city, when coating activities are typically at their highest. 相似文献

Due to its resistance to many wastewater treatment processes, the antiepileptic drug carbamazepine (CBZ) is routinely found in wastewater effluent. Wastewater irrigation is an alternative to stream discharge of wastewater effluent, which utilizes the soil as a tertiary filter to remove excess nutrients and has the potential to remove pharmaceutical compounds. Previous data suggest that CBZ is strongly sorbed to soil; however, it is unknown what its fate is for long periods of irrigation and if land use affects its distribution. Therefore, the objectives of our research were to characterize CBZ concentrations in soils that have been receiving wastewater irrigation for >25 yr under three different land uses: cropped, grassed, and forested. Triplicate soil cores were collected at each of the land uses to a depth of 120 cm. Extractions for CBZ were performed using 5-g soil samples and 20 mL of acetonitrile. The extracted solutions were analyzed on a liquid chromatograph tandem mass spectrometer. The samples were also analyzed for supporting information such as organic carbon, pH, and electrical conductivity. Results suggest that there is accumulation of the CBZ in the surface soils, which have the highest organic carbon content. Average concentrations of CBZ in the surface soils were 4.92, 2.9, and 1.92 ng g, for the forested, grassed, and cropped land uses, respectively. The majority of the CBZ was found in the upper 30 cm of the profile. Our results suggest that the soils adsorb CBZ and slow its movement into groundwater, compared to the movement of nonadsorbed chemicals. 相似文献

The Appellate Body report in January 2012 had supported the decision of Panel in the"China-measures related to the exportation of various raw materials"case(WT/DS394,395,398)and affirmed that China's restrictions(such as tariffs and quota measures)on the exportation of raw materials violated rules put forth by the WTO,which were required to be modified.In this case China's right to invoke Article 20 of GATT1994("general exception")to justify its exemption from the guidelines in Article 11.3 of the WTO Accession Protocol was denied by the Panel and the Appellate Body.This was due to the fact that the phrasing in Article 11.3 of Protocol failed to mention"GATT."This was the consequence of the two interpretation approaches the Dispute Settlement Body(DSB)adopted-a narrow textual interpretation and a subjective presumption of"legislative silence."The inappropriate use of the two methods of interpretation lead to an imbalance between the right and obligation of China under the additional obligations that were imposed upon China by the WTO,which create a negative impact on China's rare earth case and the protection of domestic natural resources. 相似文献

The results of source tests to demonstrate the applicability of direct-flame incineration for the control of the effluent from a wire-enameling bake oven are presented. The tests were conducted with a portable direct-flame incinerator under actual plant conditions. The efficiency of direct-flame incineration was established at incineration temperatures of 1000F, 1200, and 1400°F. Three furnaces and one hot water heater were tested for particulate and gaseous emissions. The effects of fuel, stoichiometry, operating conditions, and appliance type on emission levels were studied. The filterable particulate levels from a properly operating furnace were very low. However, condensable particulate emissions were considerably greater, approximately the same as predicted by EPA estimates of furnace particulate emissions. Carbon emissions comprised about 12% of filterable particulate emissions. However, when operated highly fuel-rich, copious amounts of elemental carbon particles were emitted with a mass median diameter of less than 0.4 μm. Gaseous emissions were dependent on cycling of the furnace and stoichiometry. An estimate was made of the daily furnace emissions compared to daily emissions from a 1980 catalyst-equipped automobile. While gaseous emissions were less than the corresponding vehicle emissions, the particle emissions from the furnace were three times greater than particle emissions from a 1980 vehicle. 相似文献

Abstract For the first time, velocities were measured inside a fieldscale rotary kiln incinerator. Combustion gas velocities and temperatures were measured at multiple points across a quadrant of the kiln near its exit using a bidirectional pressure probe and suction pyrometer. To accommodate the new bidirectional probe and gain access to the upper portion of the kiln, a lighter and stiffer positioning boom was designed. The kiln was directly fired using natural gas in a steady state mode. Results indicate strong vertical stratification of both velocity and temperature, with the highest values corresponding to the top of the kiln. Access restraints prevented the lower region of the kiln from being mapped. Horizontal variations in both temperature and velocity were insignificant. Operating conditions were varied by adjusting the amount of ambient air added to the front of the kiln. Increasing the flow of ambient air into the front of the kiln reduced the measured temperatures as expected, but did hot have as significant an effect on measured velocities. The quality of the results is examined by performing mass balances across the incinerator and by comparison to an existing numerical model. Abstract Experiments were performed on a 73 kW rotary kiln incinerator simulator equipped with a 73 kW secondary combustion chamber (SCC) to examine emissions of products of incomplete combustion (PICs) resulting from incineration of carbon tetrachloride (CC14) and dichloromethane (CH2C12). Species were measured using an on-line gas chromatograph (GC) system capable of measuring concentrations of eight species of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in a near-realtime fashion. Samples were taken at several points within the SCC, to generate species profiles with respect to system residence time. For the experiments, the afterburner on the SCC was operated at conditions ranging from fuel-rich to fuellean, while the kiln was operated at a constant set of conditions. Results indicate that combustion of CH2C12 produces higher levels of measured PICs than combustion of CC14, particularly 1, 2 dichlorobenzene, and to a lesser extent, monochlorobenzene. Benzene emissions were predominantly affected by the afterburner air/fuel ratio regardless of whether or not a surrogate waste was being fed. 相似文献

ABSTRACT A thermodynamic equilibrium model was used to investigate the response of aerosol NO3 to changes in concentrations of HNO3, NH3, and H2SO4. Over a range of temperatures and relative humidities (RHs), two parameters provided sufficient information for indicating the qualitative response of aerosol NO3. The first was the excess of aerosol NH4 + plus gas-phase NH3 over the sum of HNO3, particulate NO3, and particulate SO4 2- concentrations. The second was the ratio of particulate to total NO3 concentrations. Computation of these quantities from ambient measurements provides a means to rapidly analyze large numbers of samples and identify cases in which inorganic aerosol NO3 formation is limited by the availability of NH3. Example calculations are presented using data from three field studies. The predictions of the indicator variables and the equilibrium model are compared. 相似文献
