This paper presents the effects of electron–positron pair production on the linear growth of the resistive hose instability of a filamentary beam that could lead to snake-like distortion. For both the rectangular radial density profile and the diffuse profile reflecting the Bennett-type equilibrium for a self-collimating flow, the modified eigenvalue equations are derived from a Vlasov–Maxwell equation. While for the simple rectangular profile, current perturbation is localized at the sharp radial edge, for the realistic Bennett profile with an obscure edge, it is non-locally distributed over the entire beam, removing catastrophic wave–particle resonance. The pair production effects likely decrease the betatron frequency, and expand the beam radius to increase the resistive decay time of the perturbed current; these also lead to a reduction of the growth rate. It is shown that, for the Bennett profile case, the characteristic growth distance for a preferential mode can exceed the observational length-scale of astrophysical jets. This might provide the key to the problem of the stabilized transport of the astrophysical jets including extragalactic jets up to  Mpc (∼3 × 1024 cm)  scales.  相似文献

Abstract— The isotopic compositions of Sm and Gd in seven lunar samples from the Apollo 15 deep drill core were determined to discuss the effects of neutron capture near the lunar surface. Large isotopic deviations of 150Sm/149Sm, 156Gd/155Gd, and 158Gd/157Gd derived from neutron capture effects were observed in all samples. Although neutron capture products in lunar samples were investigated extensively in the 1970s, our precise isotopic measurements resulted in several new findings. The neutron fluence in the Apollo 15 drill core is a function of depth with a symmetric peak at 190 g/cm2 depth from the surface, confirming the results of earlier investigations. Neutron fluence values calculated from the isotopic shifts by comparison to artificially irradiated standard reagents were (5.16–7.49) × 1016 n/cm2. These values are 1.3 to 1.4x larger than those previously reported. Variations of εSmGd with depth are interpreted as being due to variations in the neutron energy spectrum. Here εSm and εGd are defined as in previous studies of lunar neutron stratigraphy. Our data suggest that the neutron is more thermalized at the lower layers than it is at the upper layers. In addition to large isotopic shifts for 149Sm, 150Sm, 155Gd, 156Gd, 157Gd, and 158Gd, isotopic enrichments of 152Gd and 154Gd derived from neutron capture for 151Eu and 153Eu, respectively, were also observed in all samples.  相似文献

A neural network-based approach is presented for the detection of changes in the characteristics of structure-unknown systems. The approach relies on the use of vibration measurements from a ‘healthy’ system to train a neural network for identification purposes. Subsequently, the trained network is fed comparable vibration measurements from the same structure under different episodes of response in order to monitor the health of the structure. The methodology is applied to actual data obtained from ambient vibration measurements on a steel building structure that was damaged under strong seismic motion during the Hyogo-Ken Nanbu Earthquake of 17 January 1995. The measurements were done before and after repairs to the damaged frame were made. A neural network is trained with data after the repairs, which represents ‘healthy’ condition of the building. The trained network, which is subsequently fed data before the repairs, successfully identified the difference between the damaged storey and the undamaged storey. Through this study, it is shown that the proposed approach has the potential of being a practical tool for a damage detection methodology applied to smart civil structures. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The lunar meteorite Northwest Africa (NWA) 2200 is a regolith breccia with a ferroan feldspathic bulk composition (Al2O3 = 30.1 wt.%; Mg# = molar 100 × Mg/(Mg + Fe) = 59.2) and low Th content (0.42 μg/g). Lithologically, NWA 2200 is a diverse mixture of lithic and glassy clasts, mineral fragments, and impact glass spherules, all embedded in a dark glassy matrix. NWA 2200 contains some feldspathic brecciated rock components (ferroan anorthositic granulitic breccia, poikiloblastic granulitic breccia, and glassy melt breccia with an intersertal texture). The bulk compositions of these brecciated components indicate they are derived from ferroan troctolitic or noritic anorthosite lithologies (bulk Al2O3 = 26–30 wt.%; bulk FeO/MgO > 1.0). The bulk composition of NWA 2200 is more ferroan and feldspathic than the Apollo feldspathic regolith samples and feldspathic lunar regolith meteorites, and is also more depleted in incompatible elements (e.g., rare earth elements) than Apollo 16 feldspathic regolith samples. We conclude that NWA 2200 originated from a location different to the Apollo landing sites, and may have been sourced from the ferroan KREEP-poor highlands, “KREEP” materials are enriched in such elements as potassium (K), rare earth elements (REE), phosphorus (P).  相似文献

Using an infrared radiation thermometer, measurements by remote sensing were carried out for surface temperatures of the bottom-floor and wall of the central pit and its surrounding crater bottom of Mihara volcano, Ooshima, Japan. Isotherms for the wall of the central pit are compared with the thermal and other surface manifestations. Heat discharge from the summit crater of Mihara volcano is estimated on the basis of various meteorological and other techniques, and for convenience of computation it is divided into the following three categories; latent and sensible heat transferred by ascending volcanic gas; heat emitted from the bottom-floor and wall of the central pit; and heat transported conductively and convectively from the underground heat source through the western, southern and eastern parts of the crater bottom. The computed heat discharge is estimated to be 1.4 x 107 cal s−1, which is about one order of magnitude less than that of the minor eruption on 28 February 1974. The methodology developed here for estimation of the heat discharge from a volcano can also be applied to other volcanoes.  相似文献

In the present research, an attempt is made to derive the generalized expressions for the transient electromagnetic response of a large loop source over the surface of a homogeneous earth model for arbitrary receiver positions inside or outside the source loop. Expressions are derived for the impulse as well as step excitations of the source loop. As a cross check for validity of expressions, the step response expression is obtained from the impulse response expression and vice versa. Computations are performed for the TEM response over a homogeneous earth model for source-receiver offset (r = 0) pertinent to the central loop configuration and the results are compared with the published results for the central loop TEM responses. The results are in well coincidence with each other and thus provide the check for the authenticity of the expressions. To exemplify the nature of TEM response at various source receiver offsets, results are presented for the TEM response at source receiver offsets r = 0, r = a/2, r = a and r = 2a, 6a, 12a pertaining to the central loop, in-loop, on-loop and offset loop configurations, respectively. The results depict their characteristic variations. At receiver positions inside the loop source, both the impulse as well as step responses are of same sign, whereas at the receiver positions outside the loop source, both the curves exhibit a change of sign that shifts towards the later times with increase in the offset distances. The change of sign in impulse response occurs at a relatively later time than that in the step response. This is the initial presentation of TEM response expressions for the large loop source over a homogeneous earth model for arbitrary receiver position inside and/ or outside the loop source except for the case of receiver at the center of the loop and at the coincident loop point. This research would be of immense use in the development and use of the large loop TEM method in its various configurations and thus would enhance the applicability and cost effectiveness of the large loop source TEM method.  相似文献

The mineralogy and mineral chemistry of Itokawa dust particles captured during the first and second touchdowns on the MUSES‐C Regio were characterized by synchrotron‐radiation X‐ray diffraction and field‐emission electron microprobe analysis. Olivine and low‐ and high‐Ca pyroxene, plagioclase, and merrillite compositions of the first‐touchdown particles are similar to those of the second‐touchdown particles. The two touchdown sites are separated by approximately 100 meters and therefore the similarity suggests that MUSES‐C Regio is covered with dust particles of uniform mineral chemistry of LL chondrites. Quantitative compositional properties of 48 dust particles, including both first‐ and second‐touchdown samples, indicate that dust particles of MUSES‐C Regio have experienced prolonged thermal metamorphism, but they are not fully equilibrated in terms of chemical composition. This suggests that MUSES‐C particles were heated in a single asteroid at different temperatures. During slow cooling from a peak temperature of approximately 800 °C, chemical compositions of plagioclase and K‐feldspar seem to have been modified: Ab and Or contents changed during cooling, but An did not. This compositional modification is reproduced by a numerical simulation that modeled the cooling process of a 50 km sized Itokawa parent asteroid. After cooling, some particles have been heavily impacted and heated, which resulted in heterogeneous distributions of Na and K within plagioclase crystals. Impact‐induced chemical modification of plagioclase was verified by a comparison to a shock vein in the Kilabo LL6 ordinary chondrite where Na‐K distributions of plagioclase have been disturbed.  相似文献

On the basis of observations using Cs‐corrected STEM, we identified three types of surface modification probably formed by space weathering on the surfaces of Itokawa particles. They are (1) redeposition rims (2–3 nm), (2) composite rims (30–60 nm), and (3) composite vesicular rims (60–80 nm). These rims are characterized by a combination of three zones. Zone I occupies the outermost part of the surface modification, which contains elements that are not included in the unchanged substrate minerals, suggesting that this zone is composed of sputter deposits and/or impact vapor deposits originating from the surrounding minerals. Redeposition rims are composed only of Zone I and directly attaches to the unchanged minerals (Zone III). Zone I of composite and composite vesicular rims often contains nanophase (Fe,Mg)S. The composite rims and the composite vesicular rims have a two‐layered structure: a combination of Zone I and Zone II, below which Zone III exists. Zone II is the partially amorphized zone. Zone II of ferromagnesian silicates contains abundant nanophase Fe. Radiation‐induced segregation and in situ reduction are the most plausible mechanisms to form nanophase Fe in Zone II. Their lattice fringes indicate that they contain metallic iron, which probably causes the reddening of the reflectance spectra of Itokawa. Zone II of the composite vesicular rims contains vesicles. The vesicles in Zone II were probably formed by segregation of solar wind He implanted in this zone. The textures strongly suggest that solar wind irradiation damage and implantation are the major causes of surface modification and space weathering on Itokawa.  相似文献
