Climate change is altering river temperature regimes, modifying the dynamics of temperature‐sensitive fishes. The ability to map river temperature is therefore important for understanding the impacts of future warming. Thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing has proven effective for river temperature mapping, but TIR surveys of rivers remain expensive. Recent drone‐based TIR systems present a potential solution to this problem. However, information regarding the utility of these miniaturised systems for surveying rivers is limited. Here, we present the results of several drone‐based TIR surveys conducted with a view to understanding their suitability for characterising river temperature heterogeneity. We find that drone‐based TIR data are able to clearly reveal the location and extent of discrete thermal inputs to rivers, but thermal imagery suffers from temperature drift‐induced bias, which prevents the extraction of accurate temperature data. Statistical analysis of the causes of this drift reveals that drone flight characteristics and environmental conditions at the time of acquisition explain ~66% of the variance in TIR sensor drift. These results shed important light on the factors influencing drone‐based TIR data quality and suggest that further technological development is required to enable the extraction of robust river temperature data. Nonetheless, this technology represents a promising approach for augmenting in situ sensor capabilities and improved quantification of advective inputs to rivers at intermediate spatial scales between point measurements and “conventional” airborne or satellite remote sensing.  相似文献

The CNRM atmospheric general circulation model Arpege-Climat is relaxed towards atmospheric reanalyses outside the 10°S?C32°N 30°W?C50°E domain in order to disentangle the regional versus large-scale sources of climatological biases and interannual variability of the West African monsoon (WAM). On the one hand, the main climatological features of the monsoon, including the spatial distribution of summer precipitation, are only weakly improved by the nudging, thereby suggesting the regional origin of the Arpege-Climat biases. On the other hand, the nudging technique is relatively efficient to control the interannual variability of the WAM dynamics, though the impact on rainfall variability is less clear. Additional sensitivity experiments focusing on the strong 1994 summer monsoon suggest that the weak sensitivity of the model biases is not an artifact of the nudging design, but the evidence that regional physical processes are the main limiting factors for a realistic simulation of monsoon circulation and precipitation in the Arpege-Climat model. Sensitivity experiments to soil moisture boundary conditions are also conducted and highlight the relevance of land?Catmosphere coupling for the amplification of precipitation biases. Nevertheless, the land surface hydrology is not the main explanation for the model errors that are rather due to deficiencies in the atmospheric physics. Two nanocrystalline palladium-supported tin oxide catalysts for water denitration were synthesized by a modified sol?Cgel technique using appropriate chloride precursors for both support and active phases, and citric acid to tune the rate of hydrolysis and condensation. The difference among sample preparation procedures refers to the moment of the noble metal loading to the support, as well as to the calcination temperature altitude followed. Thus, mesoporous tin oxide was synthesized by a sol?Cgel method following calcination at 700°C. The palladium active phase was introduced afterwards by means of palladium chloride solution impregnation, followed by calcination at 400°C (sample 1). Alternatively, simultaneous complexation of both metal and support precursors followed by single calcination at 700°C was applied for preparation of sample 2. The former sample showed higher activity and selectivity in hydro-denitration of water model system initially containing 100?ppm of nitrates. This was explained by preferential textural, morphological and structural properties accomplished by early contact of metal and support nanoparticles, while achieved by calcination at high single temperature forcing diffusion of palladium ions into the tin oxide matrix. The outcome is very well distribution of palladium and strong metal?Csupport interaction leading to multivalent tin. This indicates partly reduced tin oxide formation in the course of its reduction in hydrogen, which may act as active site in denitration reaction.  相似文献

The Aínsa Basin of northern Spain contains a deep‐marine succession comprising up to 24 sandstone bodies separated by thick marl‐rich units. A detailed analysis of nine outcrops (>900 m of sediment profiles) from the Morillo Formation of the San Vicente Group, from the upper part of the basin succession, has enabled a reappraisal of the unit. Within the Morillo Formation, sediment transport was to the NW, and a range of environments are recognized including channels, lobes and pelagic deposits. The overlying Coscojuela Formation, which partly cuts into the Morillo Formation, shows W‐directed palaeocurrents in its proximal reaches, with flows being deflected to the N along an adjacent slope. Destabilization of the adjacent carbonate platform resulted in a significant input of carbonate material into the flow. The final phases of sedimentation within the Aínsa Basin were more complex than previously suspected, probably as a result of a combination of factors, including tectonic activity, resulting in basin narrowing due to anticlinal growth, as well as encroachment and/or destabilization of the adjacent regional carbonate platforms. Biogenic weathering is caused by the action of lithobiontic organisms. Homogeneous carbonates are predominantly colonized by endolithic species that actively penetrate the rock substratum independent of already existing pores or fissures. The organisms construct a system of ducts and cavities by active dissolution of the substratum. A fresh, noncolonized surface is penetrated by algae and ascomycetes in the first and second year after exposure to the environment. The establishment of complex colonization patterns on and in the substratum by lichens takes several years. In spite of the primary deteriorative effect on their substratum by the organisms, long-term endolithic growth also involves mechanisms that stabilize and preserve the rock surface morphology. A tightly woven cellular network may strengthen the colonized stone. This feature is of importance when natural and building stone are affected by biogenic weathering phenomena.Special issue: Stone decay hazards  相似文献

The specularite deposit at Waldenstein is an epigenetic replacement/vein-type hematite mineralization with distinct alteration zones. It is situated in highly metamorphosed schists and, gneisses of the Koralm Crystalline Complex. Sericitization and chloritization are strictly bound to this alteration and occur within a few meters of the hematite veins. Radiometric dating of the sericitization and the implicity of the mineralization yield a Middle Eocene age. Petrographic evidence proves an early, relatively reduced paragenesis (magnetite, ilmenite) being partly replaced by hematite and chlorite during the main phase of ore formation. Fluid inclusion and stable isotope investigations indicate that formation temperatures were approximately 300°C during the main stage and decreased to 200°C in the latest stage of the hydrothermal event. The H-isotope compositions of chlorites and of fluid inclusions in quartz indicate the influence of seawater. This also explains the high salinities determined by fluid inclusion studies (20–30% NaCl equiv.). According to the genetic model presented in this paper the hydrothermal activity started when the deformation accompanying the uplift of the Koralm Crystalline Complex passed from a ductile to brittle regime (Middle Eocene). The brittle faults acted as channelways for rising, deep fluids, probably of metamorphic origin. Temperature differences between the different uplifting crustal segments supported fluid circulation. Precipitation of the ore occurred at shallow crustal levels where the hydraulic regime was dominated by seawater, and oxidation of the original reducing fluids took place.  相似文献

Nitrogen and carbohydrate utilization in Phragmites australis rhizomes was investigated under natural conditions at 10 sites in 5 lakes in Upper Bavaria over a period of two years. Nitrate and ammonium of surface and interstitial water was determined. The results indicate that conditions of habitat and environment, such as climate and fluctuation of water level, lead to different adaptations of reed. These parameters had an effect on the storage of nitrogen and carbohydrate. The reed stands exposed to high water level during spring and summer have a high carbohydrate content in the rhizomes. A positive correlation was shown between the aboveground biomass and the content of storaged carbohydrates during the vegetation period. No relationship could be demonstrated between the nitrogen availability of the habitats and the type of storage of carbohydrates and nitrogen. The nitrogen content in the rhizomes can be used as an indicator of the ability of reed stands to produce new secondary shoots after shoot loss. The differently established reed genotypes are not able to compensate short-term environmental changes, such as growing leisure problems and higher shoot loss by the increasing appearance of waterfowl, from their reserve storage.  相似文献

The Pb isotopic study of the Xigaze ophiolite (Tibet) shows that the tectonic (harzburgites) and magmatic (gabbros, dolerites, lavas) units bear different isotopic signatures, the harzburgitic rocks show much higher207Pb/204Pb values than the samples from the magmatic unit. Analyses of primary magmatic clinopyroxenes separated from the harzburgites confirmed that this difference is real and not due to secondary alteration processes. UPb analysis allowed determination of the crystallization age of the magmatites at 120 ± 10 m.y. This age is compatible with paleontological age determinations and thus demonstrates that UPb behaved more or less as a closed system since formation of the ophiolite. If an exchange with seawater has occurred, it must necessarily have happened shortly after crystallization of the Xigaze oceanic crust. Dolerite dykes crossing the harzburgites show similar Pb isotopic composition as the magmatites, indicating that they were emplaced when the ultramafic rocks were already brittle; however, the time difference of the emplacement was probably not larger than 280 m.y. This makes it evident that two sources with different isotopic signatures, one similar to normal MORB, the other with much higher207Pb/204Pb ratios, were active in the immediate neighborhood. One possible environment which can account for this association is a propagating ridge.  相似文献
