As renewable energy, geothermal can contribute substantially to the energy transition. To generate electricity or to harvest heat, high-saline fluids are tapped by wells of a few kilometres and extracted from hydrothermal reservoirs. After the heat exchanger units have been passed by, these fluids are reinjected into the reservoir. Due to the pressure and temperature differences between the subsurface and the surface, as well as the cooling of the fluids in the power plant, unwanted chemical reactions can occur within the reservoir, in the borehole, and within the power plant itself. This can reduce the permeability of the reservoir as well as the output of the geothermal power plant. This study aims to simulate real subsurface reactions using batch and leaching experiments with sandstone or sandstone powder as solid phase, and deionised water or natural brine as liquid phase. It is demonstrated that fluid composition changes after only a few days. In particular, calcite, aragonite, clay minerals, and zinc phases precipitate from the natural brine. In contrast, in particular minerals containing potassium, arsenic, barium, and silica are dissolved. Due to the experimental set-up, these mineral reactions mainly took place on the surface of the samples, which is why no substantial changes in petrophysical properties could be observed. However, it is assumed that the observed reactions on the reservoir scale have a relevant influence on parameters such as permeability.

The main focus of this study is the zonal contrast of the Sahel precipitation shown in the CMIP5 climate projections: precipitation decreases over the western Sahel (i.e., Senegal and western Mali) and increases over the central Sahel (i.e., eastern Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger). This zonal contrast in future precipitation change is a robust model response to climate change but suffers from a lack of an explanation. To this aim, we study the impact of current and future climate change on Sahel precipitation by using the Large Ensemble of the Community Earth System Model version 1 (CESM1). In CESM1, global warming leads to a strengthening of the zonal contrast, as shown by the difference between the 2060–2099 period (under a high emission scenario) and the 1960–1999 period (under the historical forcing). The zonal contrast is associated with dynamic shifts in the atmospheric circulation. We show that, in absence of a forced response, that is, when only accounting for internal climate variability, the zonal contrast is associated with the Pacific and the tropical Atlantic oceans variability. However, future patterns in sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies are not necessary to explaining the projected strengthening of the zonal contrast. The mechanisms underlying the simulated changes are elucidated by analysing a set of CMIP5 idealised simulations. We show the increase in precipitation over the central Sahel to be mostly associated with the surface warming over northern Africa, which favour the displacement of the monsoon cell northwards. Over the western Sahel, the decrease in Sahel precipitation is associated with a southward shift of the monsoon circulation, and is mostly due to the warming of the SST. These two mechanisms allow explaining the zonal contrast in precipitation change.

Snowfall changes in mountain areas in response to anthropogenic forcing could have widespread hydrological, ecological and economic impacts. In this paper, the robustness of snowfall changes over the French Alps projected during the 21st century and the associated uncertainties are studied. In particular, the role of temperature changes on snowfall changes is investigated. Those issues are tackled through the analysis of the results of a very large ensemble of high-resolution regional climate projections, obtained either through dynamical or statistical downscaling. We find that, at the beginning and at the end of the cold season extending from November to March (included), temperature change is an important source of spread in snowfall changes. However, no link is found between temperature and snowfall changes in January and February. At the beginning and at the end of the cold season, the rate of change in snowfall per Kelvin does not depend much on the bias correction step, the period or the greenhouse gas scenario but mostly on the downscaling method and the climate models, the latter uncertainty source being dominant.  相似文献

Mg-bearing calcite was precipitated at 25°C in closed system free-drift experiments from solutions containing NaHCO3, CaCl2 and MgCl2. The chemical and isotope composition of the solution and precipitate were investigated during time course experiments of 24-h duration. Monohydrocalcite and calcite precipitated early in the experiments (<8 h), while Mg-calcite was the predominant precipitate (>95%) thereafter. Solid collected at the end of the experiments displayed compositional zoning from pure calcite in crystal cores to up to 23 mol% MgCO3 in the rims. Smaller excursions in Mg were superimposed on this chemical record, which is characteristic of oscillatory zoning observed in synthetic and natural solid-solution carbonates of differing solubility. Magnesium also altered the predominant morphology of crystals over time from the {104} to {100} and {110} growth forms. The oxygen isotope fractionation factor for the magnesian-calcite-water system (as 103lnαMg-cl-H2O) displayed a strong dependence on the mol% MgCO3 in the solid phase, but quantification of the relationship was difficult due to the heterogeneous nature of the precipitate. Considering only the Mg-content and δ18O values for the bulk solid, 103lnαMg-cl-H2O increased at a rate of 0.17 ± 0.02 per mol% MgCO3; this value is a factor of three higher than the single previous estimate (Tarutani T., Clayton R.N., and Mayeda T. K. (1969) The effect of polymorphims and magnesium substitution on oxygen isotope fractionation between calcium carbonate and water. Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta 33, 987-996). Nevertheless, extrapolation of our relationship to the pure calcite end member yielded a value of 27.9 ± 0.02, which is similar in magnitude to published values for the calcite-water system. Although no kinetic effect was observed on 103lnαMg-cl-H2O for precipitation rates that ranged from 103.21 to 104.60 μmol · m−2 · h−1, it was impossible to disentangle the potential effect(s) of precipitation rate and Mg-content on 103lnαMg-cl-H2O due to the heterogeneous nature of the solid. The results of this study suggest that paleotemperatures inferred from the δ18O values of high magnesian calcite (>10 mol% MgCO3) may be significantly underestimated. Also, the results underscore the need for additional experiments to accurately characterize the effect of Mg coprecipitation on the isotope systematics of calcite from a chemically homogeneous precipitate or a heterogeneous material that is analyzed at the scale of chemical and isotopic zonation.  相似文献

In this study, we investigate the response of a Regional Climate Model (RCM) to errors in the atmospheric data used as lateral boundary conditions (LBCs) using a perfect-model framework nick-named the “Big-Brother Experiment” (BBE). The BBE has been designed to evaluate the errors due to the nesting process excluding other model errors. First, a high-resolution (45 km) RCM simulation is made over a large domain. This simulation, called the Perfect Big Brother (PBB), is driven by the National Centres for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalyses; it serves as reference virtual-reality climate to which other RCM runs will be compared. Next, errors of adjustable magnitude are introduced by performing RCM simulations with increasingly larger domains at lower horizontal resolution (90 km mesh). Such simulations with errors typical of today’s Coupled General Circulation Models (CGCM) are called the Imperfect Big-Brother (IBB) simulations. After removing small scales in order to achieve low-resolution typical of today’s CGCMs, they are used as LBCs for driving smaller domain high-resolution RCM runs; these small-domain high-resolution simulations are called Little-Brother (LB) simulations. The difference between the climate statistics of the IBB and those of PBB simulations mimic errors of the driving model. The comparison of climate statistics of the LB to those of the PBB provides an estimate of the errors resulting solely from nesting with imperfect LBCs. The simulations are performed over the East Coast of North America using the Canadian RCM, for five consecutive February months (from 1990 to 1994). It is found that the errors contained in the large scales of the IBB driving data are transmitted to and reproduced with little changes by the LB. In general, the LB restores a great part of the IBB small-scale errors, even if they do not take part in the nesting process. The small scales are seen to improve slightly in regions with important orographic forcing due to the finer resolution of the RCM. However, when the large scales of the driving model have errors, the small scales developed by the LB have errors as well, suggesting that the large scales precondition the small scales. In order to obtain correct small scales, it is necessary to provide the accurate large-scale circulation at the lateral boundary of the RCM.  相似文献

Five representative soil profiles outcropping in the area around the Cecita Lake (Calabria, South Italy) were characterised by field work, chemical and mineralogical analyses, optical and scanning electron microscopy. Interactions among weathering, pedogenesis and geomorphic processes are emphasised, in an attempt to link the results obtained at different scales of observation. The important role of topography in controlling soil development or removal by erosive processes is discussed, in relation to the natural geomorphological context and the effects of human pressure. Both present-day and relict features were recognised in the studied soils, and discussed in terms of environmental conditions and climatic changes. The chemical composition of volcanoclastic components identified in some soil horizons with Andosol-like field appearance, coupled with pedogenetic features, contributed useful chronological constraints for the reconstruction of Late Quaternary geomorphic events.  相似文献

Changma, which is a vital part of East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) system, plays a critical role in modulating water and energy cycles in Korea. Better understanding of its long-term variability and change is therefore a matter of scientific and societal importance. It has been indicated that characteristics of Changma have undergone significant interdecadal changes in association with the mid-1970s global-scale climate shift and the mid-1990s EASM shift. This paper reviews and revisits the characteristics on the long-term changes of Changma focusing on the underlying mechanisms for the changes. The four important features are manifested mainly during the last few decades: 1) mean and extreme rainfalls during Changma period from June to September have been increased with the amplification of diurnal cycle of rainfall, 2) the dry spell between the first and second rainy periods has become shorter, 3) the rainfall amount as well as the number of rainy days during August have significantly increased, probably due to the increase in typhoon landfalls, and 4) the relationship between the Changma rainfall and Western Pacific Subtropical High on interannual time scale has been enhanced. The typhoon contribution to the increase in heavy rainfall is attributable to enhanced interaction between typhoons and midlatitude baroclinic environment. It is noted that the change in the relationship between Changma and the tropical sea surface temperature (SST) over the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans is a key factor in the long-term changes of Changma and EASM. Possible sources for the recent mid-1990s change include 1) the tropical dipole-like SST pattern between the central Pacific and Indo-Pacific region (the global warming hiatus pattern), 2) the recent intensification of tropical SST gradients among the Indian Ocean, the western Pacific, and the eastern Pacific, and 3) the tropical Atlantic SST warming.  相似文献

We discuss a solar flare microwave burst complex, which included a major structure consisting of some 13 spikes of 60 ms FWHM each, observed 21 May, 1984 at 90 GHz (3 mm). It was associated with a simultaneous very hard X-ray burst complex. We suggest that the individual spikes of both bursts were caused by the same electron population: the X-bursts by their bremsstrahlung, and the microwave bursts by their gyrosynchrotron emission. This latter conclusion is based on the evidence that the radio turnover frequency was 150 GHz. It follows that the emission sources were characterized by an electron density of about 1011 cm–3, a temperature of 5 × 108 K and a magnetic field of about 1400–2000 G. They had a size of about 350 km; if the energy release is caused by reconnection the sources of primary instability could have been smaller and in the form of thin sheets with reconnection speed at a fraction of the Alfvén velocity and burst-like energy injections of 1027 erg during about 50 ms each. The energized plasma knots lost their injection energy by saturated convective flux (collisionless conduction) in about 30 ms.  相似文献

Weathering and morphogenesis in a mediterranean climate, Calabria, Italy   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Deeply weathered plutonic rocks occur widely in the Sila Massif, Calabria, southern Italy. Three representative weathering profiles developed on the hilltops indicate that sand represents more than 50% by weight throughout most of the weathering profile, and silt- and clay-size fractions are also well represented, filling the interstices among corestones. Both sand, and finer fractions of grus, and soil horizons, are thought to be derived from a combination of granular disintegration and chemical decomposition, developed on relatively flat terrains of the Sila massif. These slopes are now experiencing transport-limited morphodynamics, under a montane-modified Mediterranean climate. The depth of the weathered layers, that have suffered little erosional truncation, typically exceed 15 m, and may reach 50–60 m or more. Major isolated or grouped exfoliation boulders are the most common minor landform feature developed on the Sila massif granite. Boulders have developed as a result of spheroidal weathering and by removal of the sandy-textured granite. The Schmidt hammer (SH) test on boulders and corestones, suggests three distinctive degree of weathering (from moderately to completely weathered rock), and that biotite content is the major controlling factor of the granite mechanical behaviour. Understanding of the dynamics of this weathering system is crucial to the interpretation of the complex suite of variables that control landscape evolution of granitoid terrains.  相似文献
