In this paper,we propose a local fuzzy method based on the idea of "p-strong" community to detect the disjoint and overlapping communities in networks. In the method,a refined agglomeration rule is designed for agglomerating nodes into local communities, and the overlapping nodes are detected based on the idea of making each community strong. We propose a contribution coefficient b_v~(ci)to measure the contribution of an overlapping node to each of its belonging communities, and the fuzzy coefficients of the overlapping node can be obtained by normalizing the b_v~(ci) to all its belonging communities. The running time of our method is analyzed and varies linearly with network size.We investigate our method on the computergenerated networks and real networks. The testing results indicate that the accuracy of our method in detecting disjoint communities is higher than those of the existing local methods and our method is efficient for detecting the overlapping nodes with fuzzy coefficients.Furthermore, the local optimizing scheme used in our method allows us to partly solve the resolution problem of the global modularity.

We introduce a thermal flux-diffusing model for complex networks. Based on this model, we propose a physical method to detect the communities in the complex networks. The method allows us to obtain the temperature distribution of nodes in time that scales linearly with the network size. Then, the local community enclosing a given node can be easily detected for the reason that the dense connections in the local communities lead to the temperatures of nodes in the same community being close to each other. The community structure of a network can be recursively detected by randomly choosing the nodes outside the detected local communities. In the experiments, we apply our method to a set of benchmarking networks with known pre-determined community structures. The experiment results show that our method has higher accuracy and precision than most existing globe methods and is better than the other existing local methods in the selection of the initial node. Finally, several real-world networks are investigated.

Identification of communities is significant in understanding the structures and functions of networks. Since some nodes naturally belong to several communities, the study of overlapping communities has attracted increasing attention recently, and many algorithms have been designed to detect overlapping communities. In this paper, an overlapping communities detecting algorithm is proposed whose main strategies are finding an initial partial community from a node with maximal node strength and adding tight nodes to expand the partial community. Seven real-world complex networks and one synthetic network are used to evaluate the algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate that the algorithm proposed is efficient for detecting overlapping communities in weighted networks.

The detection of overlapping community structure in networks can give insight into the structures and functions of many complex systems. In this paper, we propose a simple but efficient overlapping community detection method for very large real-world networks. Taking a high-quality, non-overlapping partition generated by existing, efficient, non-overlapping community detection methods as input, our method identifies overlapping nodes between each pair of connected non-overlapping communities in turn. Through our analysis on modularity, we deduce that, to become an overlapping node without demolishing modularity, nodes should satisfy a specific condition presented in this paper. The proposed algorithm outputs high quality overlapping communities by efficiently identifying overlapping nodes that satisfy the above condition. Experiments on synthetic and real-world networks show that in most cases our method is better than other algorithms either in the quality of results or the computational performance. In some cases, our method is the only one that can produce overlapping communities in the very large real-world networks used in the experiments.

Community structure is an important feature in many real-world networks. Many methods and algorithms for identifying communities have been proposed and have attracted great attention in recent years. In this paper, we present a new approach for discovering the community structure in networks. The novelty is that the algorithm uses the strength of the ties for sorting out nodes into communities. More specifically, we use the principle of weak ties hypothesis to determine to what community the node belongs. The advantages of this method are its simplicity, accuracy, and low computational cost. We demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our algorithm both on real-world networks and on benchmark graphs. We also show that the distribution of link strength can give a general view of the basic structure information of graphs.

Properties of complex networks, such as small-world property, power-law degree distribution, network transitivity, and network- community structure which seem to be common to many real-world networks have attracted great interest among researchers. In this study, global information of the networks is considered by defining the profile of any node based on the shortest paths between it and all the other nodes in the network; then a useful iterative procedure for community detection based on a measure of information discrepancy and the popular modular function Q is presented. The new iterative method does not need any prior knowledge about the community structure and can detect an appropriate number of communities, which can be hub communities or non-hub communities. The computational results of the method on real networks confirm its capability.

Most existing methods for detection of community overlap cannot balance efficiency and accuracy for large and densely overlapping networks. To quickly identify overlapping communities for such networks, we propose a new method that uses belief propagation and conflict (PCB) to occupy communities. We first identify triangles with maximal clustering coefficients as seed nodes and sow a new type of belief to the seed nodes. Then the beliefs explore their territory by occupying nodes with high assent ability. The beliefs propagate their strength along the graph to consolidate their territory, and conflict with each other when they encounter the same node simultaneously. Finally, the node membership is judged from the belief vectors. The PCB time complexity is nearly linear and its space complexity is linear. The algorithm was tested in extensive experiments on three real-world social networks and three computer-generated artificial graphs. The experimental results show that PCB is very fast and highly reliable. Tests on real and artificial networks give excellent results compared with three newly proposed overlapping community detection algorithms.

Synchronization is one of the most important features observed in large-scale complex networks of interacting dynamical systems. As is well known, there is a close relation between the network topology and the network synchronizability. Using the coupled Hindmarsh–Rose neurons with community structure as a model network, in this paper we explore how failures of the nodes due to random errors or intentional attacks affect the synchronizability of community networks. The intentional attacks are realized by removing a fraction of the nodes with high values in some centrality measure such as the centralities of degree, eigenvector, betweenness and closeness. According to the master stability function method, we employ the algebraic connectivity of the considered community network as an indicator to examine the network synchronizability. Numerical evidences show that the node failure strategy based on the betweenness centrality has the most influence on the synchronizability of community networks. With this node failure strategy for a given network with a fixed number of communities, we find that the larger the degree of communities, the worse the network synchronizability; however, for a given network with a fixed degree of communities, we observe that the more the number of communities, the better the network synchronizability.

In this paper, we present a local method for detecting communities in networks. We define an outside rate coefficient ψoutψout in our method. ψoutψout has a very simple form and is easy to calculate. The local community enclosing a starting node can be detected by agglomerating the node with the smallest ψoutψout at each time step. When there are two or more nodes having the same smallest outside rate coefficient ψoutψout, we agglomerate the node with the largest kinkin. This operation is remarkably beneficial to the accuracy of our method, and simulations on benchmark networks and real networks demonstrate that our local method is efficient to detect communities in networks.

In this paper, we present a new approach to extract communities in the complex networks with considerable accuracy. We introduce the core-vertex and the intimate degree between the community and its neighboring vertices. First, we find the core-vertices as the initial community. These core-vertices are then expanded using intimate degree function during extracting community structure from the given network. In addition, our algorithm successfully finds common nodes between communities. Experimental results using some real-world networks data shows that the performance of our algorithm is satisfactory.

A fuzzy overlapping community is an important kind of overlapping community in which each node belongs to each community to different extents. It exists in many real networks but how to identify a fuzzy overlapping community is still a challenging task. In this work, the concept of local random walk and a new distance metric are introduced. Based on the new distance measurement, the dissimilarity index between each node of a network is calculated firstly. Then in order to keep the original node distance as much as possible, the network structure is mapped into low-dimensional space by the multidimensional scaling (MDS). Finally, the fuzzy cc-means clustering is employed to find fuzzy communities in a network. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is effective and efficient to identify the fuzzy overlapping communities in both artificial networks and real-world networks.

The detection of the community structure in networks is beneficial to understand the network structure and to analyze the network properties. Based on node similarity, a fast and efficient method for detecting community structure is proposed, which discovers the community structure by iteratively incorporating the community containing a node with the communities that contain the nodes with maximum similarity to this node to form a new community. The presented method has low computational complexity because of requiring only the local information of the network, and it does not need any prior knowledge about the communities and its detection results are robust on the selection of the initial node. Some real-world and computer-generated networks are used to evaluate the performance of the presented method. The simulation results demonstrate that this method is efficient to detect community structure in complex networks, and the ZLZ metrics used in the proposed method is the most suitable one among local indices in community detection.

Detection of community structures in the weighted complex networks is significant to understand the network structures and analysis of the network properties. We present a unique algorithm to detect overlapping communities in the weighted complex networks with considerable accuracy. For a given weighted network, all the seed communities are first extracted. Then to each seed community, more community members are absorbed using the absorbing degree function. In addition, our algorithm successfully finds common nodes between communities. The experiments using some real-world networks show that the performance of our algorithm is satisfactory.

Modularity has been explored as an important quantitative metric for community and cluster detection in networks. Finding the maximum modularity of a given graph has been proven to be NP-complete and therefore, several heuristic algorithms have been proposed. We investigate the problem of finding the maximum modularity of classes of graphs that have the same number of links and/or nodes and determine analytical upper bounds. Moreover, from the set of all connected graphs with a fixed number of links and/or number of nodes, we construct graphs that can attain maximum modularity, named maximum modular graphs. The maximum modularity is shown to depend on the residue obtained when the number of links is divided by the number of communities. Two applications in transportation networks and data-centers design that can benefit of maximum modular partitioning are proposed.

Detecting overlapping communities is a challenging task in analyzing networks, where nodes may belong to more than one community. Many present methods optimize quality functions to extract the communities from a network. In this paper, we present a probabilistic method for detecting overlapping communities using a generative model. The model describes the probability of generating a network with the model parameters, which reflect the communities in the network. The community memberships of each node are determined based on a probabilistic approach using those model parameters, whose values can be obtained by fitting the model to the network. This method has the advantage that the node participation degrees in each community are also computed. The proposed method is compared with some other community detection methods on both synthetic networks and real-world networks. The experiments show that this method is efficient at detecting overlapping communities and can provide better performance on the networks where a majority of nodes belong to more than one community.

A central concept in network analysis is that of similarity between nodes. In this paper, we introduce a dynamic time-series approach to quantifying the similarity between nodes in networks. The problem of measuring node similarity is exquisitely embedded into the framework of time series for state evolution of nodes. We develop a deterministic parameter-free diffusion model to drive the dynamic evolution of node states, and produce a unique time series for each source node. Then we introduce a measure quantifying how far all the other nodes are located from each source one. Following this measure, a quantity called dissimilarity index is proposed to signify the extent of similarity between nodes. Thereof, our dissimilarity index gives a deep and natural integration between the local and global perspectives of topological structure of networks. Furthermore, we apply our dissimilarity index to unveil community structure in networks, which verifies the proposed dissimilarity index.

Barabási–Albert’s “Scale Free” model is the starting point for much of the accepted theory of the evolution of real world communication networks. Careful comparison of the theory with a wide range of real world networks, however, indicates that the model is in some cases, only a rough approximation to the dynamical evolution of real networks. In particular, the exponent γ of the power law distribution of degree is predicted by the model to be exactly 3, whereas in a number of real world networks it has values between 1.2 and 2.9. In addition, the degree distributions of real networks exhibit cut offs at high node degree, which indicates the existence of maximal node degrees for these networks. In this paper we propose a simple extension to the “Scale Free” model, which offers better agreement with the experimental data. This improvement is satisfying, but the model still does not explain why the attachment probabilities should favor high degree nodes, or indeed how constraints arrive in non-physical networks. Using recent advances in the analysis of the entropy of graphs at the node level we propose a first principles derivation for the “Scale Free” and “constraints” model from thermodynamic principles, and demonstrate that both preferential attachment and constraints could arise as a natural consequence of the second law of thermodynamics.

The identification of influential nodes in complex networks is one of the most exciting topics in network science. The latest work successfully compares each node using local connectivity and weak tie theory from a new perspective. We study the structural properties of networks in depth and extend this successful node evaluation from single-scale to multi-scale. In particular, one novel position parameter based on node transmission efficiency is proposed, which mainly depends on the shortest distances from target nodes to high-degree nodes. In this regard, the novel multi-scale information importance (MSII) method is proposed to better identify the crucial nodes by combining the network's local connectivity and global position information. In simulation comparisons, five state-of-the-art algorithms, i.e. the neighbor nodes degree algorithm (NND), betweenness centrality, closeness centrality, Katz centrality and the k-shell decomposition method, are selected to compare with our MSII. The results demonstrate that our method obtains superior performance in terms of robustness and spreading propagation for both real-world and artificial networks.
