Recently a new basis for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions QSym, called quasisymmetric Schur functions, has been introduced by Haglund, Luoto, Mason, van Willigenburg. In this paper we extend the definition of quasisymmetric Schur functions to introduce skew quasisymmetric Schur functions. These functions include both classical skew Schur functions and quasisymmetric Schur functions as examples, and give rise to a new poset LC that is analogous to Young's lattice. We also introduce a new basis for the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions NSym. This basis of NSym is dual to the basis of quasisymmetric Schur functions and its elements are the pre-image of the Schur functions under the forgetful map χ:NSymSym. We prove that the multiplicative structure constants of the noncommutative Schur functions, equivalently the coefficients of the skew quasisymmetric Schur functions when expanded in the quasisymmetric Schur basis, are nonnegative integers, satisfying a Littlewood–Richardson rule analogue that reduces to the classical Littlewood–Richardson rule under χ.As an application we show that the morphism of algebras from the algebra of Poirier–Reutenauer to Sym factors through NSym. We also extend the definition of Schur functions in noncommuting variables of Rosas–Sagan in the algebra NCSym to define quasisymmetric Schur functions in the algebra NCQSym. We prove these latter functions refine the former and their properties, and project onto quasisymmetric Schur functions under the forgetful map. Lastly, we show that by suitably labeling LC, skew quasisymmetric Schur functions arise in the theory of Pieri operators on posets.  相似文献

Cylindric skew Schur functions, which are a generalisation of skew Schur functions, arise naturally in the study of P-partitions. Also, recent work of A. Postnikov shows they have a strong connection with a problem of considerable current interest: that of finding a combinatorial proof of the non-negativity of the 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants. After explaining these motivations, we study cylindric skew Schur functions from the point of view of Schur-positivity. Using a result of I. Gessel and C. Krattenthaler, we generalise a formula of A. Bertram, I. Ciocan-Fontanine and W. Fulton, thus giving an expansion of an arbitrary cylindric skew Schur function in terms of skew Schur functions. While we show that no non-trivial cylindric skew Schur functions are Schur-positive, we conjecture that this can be reconciled using the new concept of cylindric Schur-positivity.  相似文献

After deriving inequalities on coefficients arising in the expansion of a Schur P-function in terms of Schur functions we give criteria for when such expansions are multiplicity free. From here we study the multiplicity of an irreducible spin character of the twisted symmetric group in the product of a basic spin character with an irreducible character of the symmetric group, and determine when it is multiplicity free. We study particular sequences of rational matrix functions with poles outside the unit circle. These Schur-Nevanlinna-Potapov sequences are recursively constructed based on some complex numbers with norm less than one and some strictly contractive matrices. The main theme of this paper is a thorough analysis of the matrix functions belonging to the sequences in question. Essentially, such sequences are closely related to the theory of orthogonal rational matrix functions on the unit circle. As a further crosslink, we explain that the functions belonging to Schur-Nevanlinna-Potapov sequences can be used to describe the solution set of an interpolation problem of Nevanlinna-Pick type for matricial Schur functions.  相似文献

We introduce a class of Schur type functions associated with polynomial sequences of binomial type. This can be regarded as a generalization of the ordinary Schur functions and the factorial Schur functions. This generalization satisfies some interesting expansion formulas, in which there is a curious duality. Moreover, this class includes examples which are useful to describe the eigenvalues of Capelli type central elements of the universal enveloping algebras of classical Lie algebras.   相似文献

Many combinatorial generating functions can be expressed as combinations of symmetric functions, or extracted as sub-series and specializations from such combinations. Gessel has outlined a large class of symmetric functions for which the resulting generating functions are D-finite. We extend Gessel's work by providing algorithms that compute differential equations, these generating functions satisfy in the case they are given as a scalar product of symmetric functions in Gessel's class. Examples of applications to k-regular graphs and Young tableaux with repeated entries are given. Asymptotic estimates are a natural application of our method, which we illustrate on the same model of Young tableaux. We also derive a seemingly new formula for the Kronecker product of the sum of Schur functions with itself.  相似文献

In this paper we define an equivalence relation of operators on Hilbert spaces which we call absolute equivalence. Two operators are called absolutely equivalent if both the absolute value of the operators and their adjoints are unitarily equivalent. We then use the properties of this equivalence relation to study the Koszul complex of a commuting tuple of operators through the Dirac operator of the tuple.  相似文献

We formulate a theory of invariants for the spin symmetric group in some suitable modules which involve the polynomial and exterior algebras. We solve the corresponding graded multiplicity problem in terms of specializations of the Schur Q-functions and a shifted q-hook formula. In addition, we provide a bijective proof for a formula of the principal specialization of the Schur Q-functions.  相似文献

The main theme of this paper is the discussion of a family of extremal solutions of a finite moment problem for rational matrix functions in the nondegenerate case. We will point out that each member of this family is extremal in several directions. Thereby, the investigations below continue the studies in Fritzsche et al. (in press) [1]. In doing so, an application of the theory of orthogonal rational matrix functions with respect to a nonnegative Hermitian matrix Borel measure on the unit circle is used to get some insights into the structure of the extremal solutions in question. In particular, we explain characterizations of these solutions in the whole solution set in terms of orthogonal rational matrix functions. We will also show that the associated Riesz-Herglotz transform of such a particular solution admits specific representations, where orthogonal rational matrix functions are involved.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss Weyl matrix balls in the context of the matricial versions of the classical interpolation problems named after Carathéodory and Schur. Our particular focus will be on studying the monotonicity of suitably normalized semi-radii of the corresponding Weyl matrix balls. We, furthermore, devote a fair bit of attention to characterizing the case in which equality holds for particular matricial inequalities. Solving these problems will provide us with a new perspective on the role of the central functions for the classes of Carathéodory and Schur.  相似文献

We establish a dichotomy theorem characterizing the circumstances under which a treeable Borel equivalence relation E is essentially countable. Under additional topological assumptions on the treeing, we in fact show that E   is essentially countable if and only if there is no continuous embedding of E1E1 into E. Our techniques also yield the first classical proof of the analogous result for hypersmooth equivalence relations, and allow us to show that up to continuous Kakutani embeddability, there is a minimum Borel function which is not essentially countable-to-one.  相似文献

We obtain general identities for the product of two Schur functions in the case where one of the functions is indexed by a rectangular partition, and give their t-analogs using vertex operators. We study subspaces forming a filtration for the symmetric function space that lends itself to generalizing the theory of Schur functions and also provides a convenient environment for studying the Macdonald polynomials. We use our identities to prove that the vertex operators leave such subspaces invariant. We finish by showing that these operators act trivially on the k-Schur functions, thus leading to a concept of irreducibility for these functions.  相似文献

We introduce a new basis for quasisymmetric functions, which arise from a specialization of nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials to standard bases, also known as Demazure atoms. Our new basis is called the basis of quasisymmetric Schur functions, since the basis elements refine Schur functions in a natural way. We derive expansions for quasisymmetric Schur functions in terms of monomial and fundamental quasisymmetric functions, which give rise to quasisymmetric refinements of Kostka numbers and standard (reverse) tableaux. From here we derive a Pieri rule for quasisymmetric Schur functions that naturally refines the Pieri rule for Schur functions. After surveying combinatorial formulas for Macdonald polynomials, including an expansion of Macdonald polynomials into fundamental quasisymmetric functions, we show how some of our results can be extended to include the t parameter from Hall-Littlewood theory.  相似文献

Functions satisfying a defective renewal equation arise commonly in applied probability models. Usually these functions do not admit an explicit expression. In this work, we consider their approximation by means of a gamma-type operator given in terms of the Laplace transform of the initial function. We investigate which conditions on the initial parameters of the renewal equation give the optimal order of uniform convergence of the approximation. We apply our results to ruin probabilities in the classical risk model, paying special attention to mixtures of gamma claim amounts.  相似文献

We introduce a family of quasisymmetric functions called Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which specialize to enumerators for the joint distribution of the permutation statistics, major index and excedance number on permutations of fixed cycle type. This family is analogous to a family of quasisymmetric functions that Gessel and Reutenauer used to study the joint distribution of major index and descent number on permutations of fixed cycle type. Our central result is a formula for the generating function for the Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which specializes to a new and surprising q-analog of a classical formula of Euler for the exponential generating function of the Eulerian polynomials. This q-analog computes the joint distribution of excedance number and major index, the only of the four important Euler-Mahonian distributions that had not yet been computed. Our study of the Eulerian quasisymmetric functions also yields results that include the descent statistic and refine results of Gessel and Reutenauer. We also obtain q-analogs, (q,p)-analogs and quasisymmetric function analogs of classical results on the symmetry and unimodality of the Eulerian polynomials. Our Eulerian quasisymmetric functions refine symmetric functions that have occurred in various representation theoretic and enumerative contexts including MacMahon's study of multiset derangements, work of Procesi and Stanley on toric varieties of Coxeter complexes, Stanley's work on chromatic symmetric functions, and the work of the authors on the homology of a certain poset introduced by Björner and Welker.  相似文献

Several authors have examined connections between restricted permutations and Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. In this paper we prove analogues of these results for colored permutations. First we define a distinguished set of length two and length three patterns, which contains only 312 when just one color is used. Then we give a recursive procedure for computing the generating function for the colored permutations which avoid this distinguished set and any set of additional patterns, which we use to find a new set of signed permutations counted by the Catalan numbers and a new set of signed permutations counted by the large Schröder numbers. We go on to use this result to compute the generating functions for colored permutations which avoid our distinguished set and any layered permutation with three or fewer layers. We express these generating functions in terms of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind and we show that they are special cases of generating functions for involutions which avoid 3412 and a layered permutation.  相似文献

We study the behavior of some classes of Hilbert space contractions with respect to Harnack and Shmul’yan pre-orders and the corresponding equivalence relations. We give some conditions under which the Harnack equivalence of two given contractions is equivalent to their Shmul’yan equivalence and to the existence of an arc joining the two contractions in the class of operator-valued contractive analytic functions on the unit disc. We apply some of these results to quasi-isometries and quasi-normal contractions, as well as to partial isometries for which we show that their Harnack and Shmul’yan parts coincide. We also discuss an extension, recently considered by S. ter Horst (2014), of the Shmul’yan pre-order from contractions to the operator-valued Schur class of functions. In particular, the Shmul’yan–ter Horst part of a given partial isometry, viewed as a constant Schur class function, is explicitly determined.  相似文献

Via duality of Hopf algebras, there is a direct association between peak quasisymmetric functions and enumeration of chains in Eulerian posets. We study this association explicitly, showing that the notion of cd-index, long studied in the context of convex polytopes and Eulerian posets, arises as the dual basis to a natural basis of peak quasisymmetric functions introduced by Stembridge. Thus Eulerian posets having a nonnegative cd-index (for example, face lattices of convex polytopes) correspond to peak quasisymmetric functions having a nonnegative representation in terms of this basis. We diagonalize the operator that associates the basis of descent sets for all quasisymmetric functions to that of peak sets for the algebra of peak functions, and study the g-polynomial for Eulerian posets as an algebra homomorphism.  相似文献

Systems of analytic functions which are simultaneously orthogonal over each of two domains were apparently first studied in particular cases by Walsh and Szegö, and in full generality by Bergman. In principle, these are very interesting objects, allowing application to analytic continuation that is not restricted (as Weierstrassian continuation via power series) either by circular geometry or considerations of locality. However, few explicit examples are known, and in general one does not know even gross qualitative features of such systems. The main contribution of the present paper is to prove qualitative results in a quite general situation. It is by now very well known that the phenomenon of “double orthogonality” is not restricted to Bergman spaces of analytic functions, nor even indeed has it any intrinsic relation to analyticity; its essence is an eigenvalue problem arising whenever one considers the operator of restriction on a Hilbert space of functions on some set, to a subset thereof, provided this restriction is injective and compact. However, in this paper only Hilbert spaces of analytic functions are considered, especially Bergman spaces. In the case of the Hardy spaces Fisher and Micchelli discovered remarkable qualitative features of doubly orthogonal systems, and we have shown how, based on the classical potential-theoretic notion of balayage, and its modern generalizations, one can deduce analogous results in the Bergman space set-up, but with restrictions imposed on the geometry of the considered domains and measures; these were not needed in the Fisher-Micchelli analysis, but are necessary here as shown by examples. From a more constructive point of view we study the Bergman restriction operator between the unit disk and a compactly contained quadrature domain and show that the representing kernel of this operator is rational and it is expressible (as an inversion followed by a logarithmic derivative) in terms of the polynomial equation of the boundary of the inner domain.  相似文献
