The objective of this study was to develop an environmentally friendly fire‐retardant polypropylene (PP) with significantly improved fire‐retardancy performance with a novel flame‐retardant (FR) system. The system was composed of ammonium polyphosphate (APP), melamine (MEL), and novel phosphorus‐based FRs. Because of the synergistic FR effects among the three FRs, the FR PP composites achieved a V‐0 classification, and the limiting oxygen index reached as high as 36.5%. In the cone calorimeter test, both the peak heat‐release rate (pHRR) and total heat release (THR) of the FR PP composites were remarkably reduced by the incorporation of the novel FR system. The FR mechanism of the MEL–APP–FR–PP composites was investigated through thermogravimetric analysis and char residue characterization, and the results reveal that the addition of MEL–APP–FRs promoted the formation of stable intumescent char layers. This led to the reduction of pHRR and THR and resulted in the improvement of the fire retardancy. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 135, 45962.  相似文献

The halogen‐free flame retardance of natural fiber is an everlasting challenge due to the well‐known poor solubility of phosphazene in water. In this case, a new cyclotriphosphazene derivative (MCP) was synthesized. It was etherized hexamethylolmelamine (HMMM) and hexachloro‐cyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) by one pot reaction. It was characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 31P NMR, FT‐IR, TGA, SEM, limited oxygen index (LOI) and vertical flame testing. The MCP has good solubility in water and thermosetting MCP has compact structure which can expand several times after burning. Cotton gauze was soaked in six different concentration of aqueous solutions of MCP (0 wt %, 5 wt %, 10 wt %, 15 wt %, 20 wt % and 25 wt %, respectively) to obtain the flame retardant cloth. The cloth was soaked in 20 wt % MCP solution had higher char yield and LOI. They had no any afterflame and afterglow, and gauze 2‐ gauze 5 cannot be burned out in 12s ignition time. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2016 , 133, 43555.  相似文献

A novel nitrogen‐containing cyclic phosphate (NDP) was synthesized and well characterized by 1H, 13C, 31P NMR, mass spectra and elemental analysis. NDP was used as an additive intumescent flame retardant (AIFR) to impart flame retardancy and dripping resistance for diglycidyl ether of bisphenol‐A epoxy resin (DGEBA) curied by 4,4′‐diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) with different phosphorus content. The flammability, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of NDP modified DGEBA/DDS thermosets were investigated by UL‐94 vertical burning test, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Izod impact strength and flexural property tests. The results showed that NDP modified DGEBA/DDS thermosets exhibited excellent flame retardancy, moderate changes in glass transition temperature and thermal stability. When the phosphorus content reached only 1.5 wt %, the NDP modified DGEBA/DDS thermoset could result in satisfied flame retardancy (UL‐94, V‐0). The TGA curves under nitrogen and air atmosphere suggested that NDP had good ability of char formation, and there existed a distinct synergistic effect between phosphorus and nitrogen. The flame retardant mechanism was further realized by studying the structure and morphology of char residues using FT‐IR and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It indicated that NDP as phosphorus‐nitrogen containing flame retardant worked by both of the condensed phase action and the vapor phase action. Additionally, the addition of NDP decreased slightly the flexural strength of the flame retarded DGEBA epoxy resins, and increased the Izod impact strength of these thermosets. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Flame‐retardant polymer, dendritic tetramethylolphosphonium chloride (FR‐DTHPC), was prepared by condensation polymerization between THPC, the monomer we prepared, and boric acid. It was then characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, intrinsic viscosity, and matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometer. This FR‐DTHPC was used in the preparation of flame‐retardant ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) composites. Different types of EPDM/FR‐DTHPC composites were prepared with different amounts of FR‐DTHPC. Then, the cure characteristic, tensile properties, flame‐retardance, and thermal stability were researched and compared. Results showed that the addition of this novel additive can improve some mechanical and flame‐retardant properties of EPDM composites. Mechanisms of reinforcing and flame‐retardance were proposed. The dendritic polymer may reduce the amount and size of voids in EPDM composites, and thus may increase their tensile properties. Meanwhile, the degradation products from nitrogen, phosphorus, and boric acid in FR‐DTHPC can increase the amount of carbonaceous layers, and thus can inhibit the pyrolysis degree of EPDM composites during burning and improve their flame‐retardant performance. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synergistic flame‐retardant (FR) effect of 1,1′‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐metheylene‐bis(9,10‐dihydro‐9‐oxa‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene‐10‐oxide‐2‐hydroxypropan‐1‐yl) (DPOH) and aluminum diethylphosphinate (AlPi) composites on glass fiber reinforced polyamide 66 (PA) was investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI) tests, vertical burning (UL94) tests, and cone calorimeter tests. DPOH/AlPi system with 1:1 mass ratio increased UL94 ratings, suppressed heat release rate and increased residue yields of PA composites, and DPOH/AlPi system also imposed high LOI values and lower total heat release values to PA composites. All these results verified excellent synergistic FR effect between DPOH and AlPi. The reason of DPOH/AlPi system with higher flame‐retardant efficiency was caused by the quenching effect as good as that of DPOH and also by the higher charring effect than that of AlPi. DPOH/AlPi system possesses good flame retardancy in gas phase and also the strengthened FR effect in condensed phase compared with DPOH and AlPi alone, which led to excellent synergistic FR effect between the two components DPOH and AlPi. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. By adjusting the molar ratios of antistatic monomer of octyl phenol ethylene oxide acrylate (denoted as AS), rigid monomer of methyl methacrylate (denoted as MMA), and flame‐retardant monomer of 2‐(phosphoryloxymethyl oxyethylene) acrylate (denoted as FR), a series of flame‐retardant antistatic copolymers poly (octyl phenol ethylene oxide acrylate‐co‐methyl methacrylate‐co‐phosphoryloxymethyl oxyethylene acrylate) (donated as AMF) were synthesized through radical polymerization. Among the obtained copolymers, two copolymers, AMF162 (the feed molar ratio of AS, MMA, and FR as 1 : 6 : 2) and AMF1104 (the feed molar ratio of AS, MMA, and FR as 1 : 10 : 4) with different concentrations were added into polypropylene (PP) to prepare PP‐AMF162 and PP‐AMF1104 series of composites. The thermal stability, limiting oxygen index, the antistatic property, and mechanical properties of PP composites were tested and analyzed. PP‐AMF162 series composites have excellent antistatic effect. When the AMF162 content was equal to or <15 wt %, the impact strength of PP‐AMF162 composites was higher than that of pure PP. The results indicated that copolymer AMF162 was a suitable flame‐retardant and antistatic additive for PP. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132, 41677.  相似文献

Poor flame retardancy of polyurethanes (PU) is a global issue as it limits their applications particularly in construction, automobile, and household appliances industries. The global challenge of high flammability of PU can be addressed by incorporating flame‐retardant materials. However, additive flame‐retardants are non‐compatible and depreciate the properties of PU. Hence, reactive flame‐retardants (RFR) based on aliphatic (Ali‐1 and Ali‐2) and aromatic (Ar‐1 and Ar‐2) structured bromine compounds were synthesized and used to prepare bio‐based PU using limonene dimercaptan. The aromatic bromine containing foams showed higher close cell content (average 97 and 100%) and compressive strength (230 and 325 kPa) to that of aliphatic bromine containing foams. Similar behavior was observed for a horizontal burning test where with a low concentration of bromine (5 wt %) in the foams for Ar‐1 and Ar‐2 displayed a burning time of 12.5 and 11.8 s while, Ali‐1 and Ali‐2 displayed burning time of 25.7 and 37 s, respectively. Neat foam showed a burning time of 74 s. The percentage weight loss for neat PU foam was 26.5%, while foams containing 5 wt % bromine in Ali‐1, Ali‐2, Ar‐1, and Ar‐2 foams displayed weight loss of 11.3, 14, 7.9, and 14%, respectively. Our results suggest that flame retardant PU foams could be prepared effectively by using RFR materials. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 135, 46027.  相似文献

Water‐blown rigid polyurethane foam (PUF) with two different particle sizes (180 and 300 μm) of expandable graphite (EG) as a flame‐retardant additive were prepared, and the effects on the mechanical, morphological, water absorption, thermal conductivity, thermal, and flame‐retardant properties were studied. In this investigation, EG content was varied from 5 to 50 php by weight. The mechanical properties of PUF decreased with increasing EG loading in both cases. The water absorption of the PUF increased with an increase in the EG loading mainly because of the collapse of foam cells, as evidenced from the scanning electron microscopy pictures. The thermal conductivity of the EG‐filled PUF showed that the insulation properties decreased with EG loading. The flame‐retardant properties (limiting oxygen index and char yield measurement) of the PUF improved with increasing EG loading. PUF filled with the higher particle size EG showed better mechanical properties and fire‐retardant properties than the PUF filled with the lower particle size EG. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A reactive, intumescent, halogen‐free flame retardant, 2‐({9‐[(4,6‐diamino‐1,3,5‐triazin‐2‐yl)amino]‐3,9‐dioxido‐2,4,8,10‐tetraoxa‐3,9‐diphosphaspiro[5.5]undecan‐3‐yl}oxy)ethyl methacrylate (EADP), was synthesized through a simple three‐step reaction from phosphorus oxychloride, pentaerythritol, hydroxyethyl methacrylate, and melamine. EADP exhibited excellent thermal stability and char‐forming ability, as revealed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The TGA results show that the temperature at 5% weight loss was 297.8°C and the char yield at 700°C was 51.75%. SEM observation revealed that the char showed a continuous and compact surface and a cellular inner structure with different sizes. Composite of polypropylene (PP) with a 25 wt % addition of EADP (PP/EADP25) passed the UL‐94 V‐0 rating and showed a limiting oxygen index value of 31.5. Compared with those of neat PP, the flexural strength and modulus values of PP/EADP25 were somewhat improved, the tensile strength was basically unchanged, and the notched Izod impact strength was slightly decreased. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Layer‐by‐layer (LbL) assembly of nanocoatings on fabric substrates has been very successful in terms of reduction of flammability. In particular, an LbL system comprised ammonium polyphosphate as the polyanion and chitosan as the polycation, applied to cotton fabric, dramatically reduced cotton flammability. At this point, the fire‐retardant (FR) mechanism of action of this system has never been fully elucidated. Sonicated and nonsonicated coated cotton fabrics were evaluated using a vertical flame test and mass loss calorimeter. Coating morphology was investigated before and after burning. Thermal analyses and chemical analyses in the condensed phase (and in the gas phase) were conducted to reveal the FR mechanism of action. At the cotton surface, a combination of both condensed (formation of aromatic char) and gas phase (release of water and highly flammable gases) mechanisms impart the FR behavior, promoting a kind of “microintumescence” phenomenon. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene (ABS) resins are widely used in many sectors of the industry due to excellent mechanical properties, low temperature resistance, heat resistance, and chemical resistance. However, its flammability constitutes a key limitation in their applications. Consequently, development of flame‐retarding ABS resins is imperative. Herein, we report a novel synergistic system composed of Mg–Al–Co–layered double hydroxides (LDHs) prepared via a co‐precipitation method, and [4‐(diphenoxy‐phosphorylamino)‐6‐phenyl‐[l,3,5] triazin‐2‐y1]‐phosphoramidic acid diphenyl ester (DPCPB), a novel intumescent flame retardant. The properties of the as‐prepared LDHs/DPCPB/ABS composites are evaluated using standard combustion performance tests including limiting oxygen index (LOI) and vertical burning test (UL‐94). Novel ABS resins with the composition of ABS/DPCPB = 100/25 and ABS/DPCPB/LDHs = 100/2l/4 exhibit higher LOIs, 23.9 and 24.7, respectively, compared to 18.1 for the pure ABS. Meanwhile, they meet the V‐2 and A‐1 level, respectively, in UL‐94 tests. Moreover, the prepared composites exert flame‐retarding effects in gas phase and condensed phase simultaneously. Our results reveal synergistic effects between Mg–Al–Co–LDHs and DPCPB for the flame retardation of ABS resins. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 135, 46319.  相似文献

In this research, a flame‐retardant water‐dispersed polyurethane resin was synthesized through incorporating phosphonate groups into the polyurethane structure in the chain‐extension step. A phosphorus‐containing reactive flame‐retardant compound was synthesized for this purpose. First, bis(4‐nitrophenyl)phenyl phosphine oxide was synthesized and then converted to bis(4‐amino phenyl)phenyl phosphine oxide (BAPPO) by reducing its nitro groups into amines. The obtained products were characterized by IR, 1H‐NMR, and 31P‐NMR, and the thermal properties of the polymers were determined by DSC analysis. The BAPPO‐containing polyurethane showed physical properties that were almost similar to those of phosphorus‐free polyurethane and exhibited good flame resistance with a limiting oxygen index value of 27. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The poly(hexamethylene terephthalamide)‐co‐polycaprolactam (PA6T/6; 50:50) copolymer was synthesized with a reactive extrusion method and subsequently mixed with a certain content of glass fibers (GFs) and different ratios of flame‐retardant aluminum diethyl phosphinate (AlPi) to fabricate a series of composites. These resulting composites were found to have excellent mechanical (tensile strength = 119–154 MPa) and thermal properties (heat‐deflection temperature = 263–293 °C). It is particularly worth mentioning that the value of the limiting oxygen index reached 29.5% and a UL‐94 V‐0 rating (1.6 mm) was achieved with the addition of 20 portions of AlPi. Also, the values of the peak heat‐release rate and total heat release in cone calorimetry were found to decrease with the addition of the flame‐retardant AlPi, which acted mainly as a flame inhibitor in the gas phase. Through visual observation, scanning electron microscopy after cone calorimetry testing, and thermogravimetric analysis, the condensed‐phase flame‐retardant mechanism of the PA6T/6–GF–AlPi system was confirmed to have a synergetic role. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel charring agent (CNCA‐DA) containing triazine and benzene ring, using cyanuric chloride, aniline, and ethylenediamine as raw materials, was synthesized and characterized. The effects of CNCA‐DA on flame retardancy, thermal degradation, and flammability properties of polypropylene (PP) were investigated by limited oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test (UL‐94), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and cone calorimeter test (CCT). The TGA results showed that CNCA‐DA had a good char forming ability, and a high initial temperature of thermal degradation; the char residue of CNCA‐DA reached 18.5% at 800°C; Ammonium polyphosphate (APP) could improve the char residue of APP/CNCA‐DA system, the char residue reached 31.6% at 800°C. The results from LOI and UL‐94 showed that the intumescent flame retardant (IFR) containing CNCA‐DA and APP was very effective in flame retardancy of PP. When the mass ratio of APP and CNCA‐DA was 2 : 1, and the IFR loading was 30%, the IFR showed the best effect; the LOI value reached 35.6%. It was also found that when the IFR loading was only 20%, the flame retardancy of PP/IFR can still pass V‐0 rating in UL‐94 tests, and its LOI value reached 27.1%. The CCT results demonstrated that IFR could clearly change the decomposition behavior of PP and form a char layer on the surface of the composites, consequently resulting in efficient reduction of the flammability parameters, such as heat release rate (HRR), total heat release (THR), smoke production rate (SPR), total smoke production (TSP), and mass loss (ML). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Halogen‐free flame‐retarded blends composed of 2,2‐bis[4‐(3,4‐dicyanophenoxy) phenyl] propane (BAPh) and epoxy resin E‐44 (EP) were successfully prepared with 4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl sulfone as a curing additive. The structure of the copolymers was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, which showed that epoxy groups, a phthalocyanine ring, and a triazine ring existed. The limiting oxygen index values were over 30, and the UL‐94 rating reached V‐0 for the 20 : 80 (w/w) BAPh/EP copolymers. Differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic rheological analysis were employed to study the curing reaction behaviors of the phthalonitrile/epoxy blends. Also, the gelation time was shortened to 3 min when the prepolymerization temperature was 190°C. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the thermal decomposition of the phthalonitrile/epoxy copolymers significantly improved with increasing BAPh content. The flexible strength of the 20:80 copolymers reached 149.5 MPa, which enhanced by 40 MPa compared to pure EP. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

A phosphorous flame retardant (DOPO‐MAH) was synthesized through the reaction between of 9,10‐dihydro‐9‐oxa‐10‐phosphaphenanthrene‐10‐oxide (DOPO) and maleic anhydride (MAH) and confirmed by FT‐IR, 1H NMR, and 31P NMR techniques. The obtained flame retardant was then melt blended with poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) to prepare flame retardant PBT/DOPO‐MAH composites. The composites were characterized by LOI, UL‐94, and mechanical tests as well as scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry analysis. On adding 20 wt % DOPO‐MAH, LOI increased from 20.9 to 25.7 and the UL‐94 V‐0 rating was achieved, whereas the tensile and flexural properties were notably improved. Torque‐time profile during the melt blending and intrinsic viscosity of the composite indicated that DOPO‐MAH acted as both flame retardant and chain extender for the PBT matrix. The results showed that PBT/DOPO‐MAH composite is a promising material for its good comprehensive properties. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 130: 1301‐1307, 2013  相似文献

A hyperbranched derivative of triazine group (EA) was synthesized by elimination reaction between ethylenediamine and cyanuric chloride. The different‐mass‐ratio EA and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) were mixed and blended with polypropylene (PP) in a constant amount (25%) to prepare a series of EA/APP/PP composites. The component ratio effect of EA/APP on the flame‐retardant property of the EA/APP/PP composites was investigated using the limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning (UL‐94), and cone calorimetry tests. Results indicated that the EA/APP/PP (7.50/17.50/75.00) composite with the appropriate EA/APP mass ratio had the highest LOI, UL94 V‐0 rating, lowest heat release rate, and highest residue yield. These results implied that the appropriate EA/APP mass ratio formed a better intumescent flame‐retardant system and adequately exerted their synergistic effects. Furthermore, average effective combustion heat values revealed that EA/APP flame retardant possessed the gaseous‐phase flame‐retardant effect on PP. Residues of the EA/APP/PP composites were also investigated by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier‐transform infrared, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results demonstrated that the appropriate EA/APP mass ratio can fully interact and lock more chemical constituents containing carbon and nitrogen in the residue, thereby resulting in the formation of a dense, compact, and intumescent char layer. This char layer exerted a condensed‐phase flame‐retardant effect on EA/APP/PP composites. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2014 , 131, 41006.  相似文献

A novel, halogen‐free, phosphorus–nitrogen containing flame retardant 2[4‐(2,4,6‐Tris{4‐[(5,5‐dimethyl‐2‐oxo‐2λ5‐[1,3,2]dioxaphosphinan‐2‐yl)hydroxymethyl]phenoxy}‐(1,3,5)‐triazine (TNTP) was successfully synthesized in a three‐step process, and characterized by FTIR, NMR spectroscopy, mass spectra, and elemental analysis. A series of modified DGEBA epoxy resin with different loadings of TNTP were prepared and cured by 4,4‐diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS). Thermal gravimetric analysis and vertical burning test (UL‐94) were used to evaluate the flame retardancy of TNTP on DGEBA epoxy resin. The results showed that TNTP had a great impact on flame retardancy. All modified thermosets by using TNTP exhibited higher Tg than pure DGEBA/DDS. The loading of TNTP at only 5.0 wt % could result in satisfied flame retardancy (UL‐94, V‐0) together with high char residue (27.3%) at 700°C. The addition of TNTP could dramatically enhance the flame retardancy of DGEBA epoxy resins, which was further confirmed by the analysis of the char residues by scanning electron microscopy and FTIR. Furthermore, no obviously negative effect was found on the Izod impact strength and flexural property of DGEBA epoxy resins when TNTP loading limited in 5.0 wt %. DGEBA/DDS containing 2.5 wt % TNTP could enhance Izod impact strength from 10.47 to 10.94 kJ m?2, and showed no appreciable effect on the flexural property (85.20 MPa) comparing with pure DGEBA/DDS (87.03 MPa). Results indicated that TNTP as a phosphorus–nitrogen synergistic intumescent flame retardant could be used for DGEBA epoxy resin. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Para‐allyl ether phenol derivative of cyclophosphazene (PACP) was prepared and used as a filler to modify the flame‐retardant properties of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) by melting‐blending. The mechanism of flame‐retardant was discussed and the influences of flame‐retardant contents to the mechanical properties were studied. The results revealed that the incorporation of only 5 phpp PACP (0.37 wt % phosphorus containing) into PET matrix can distinctly increase the flame retardancy of PET/PACP composition, and it has a little effect on the mechanical properties of PET. The high flame‐retardant performance of PET/PACP composite was attributed to the combination of condensed‐phase flame retardant and gas‐phase flame retardant. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Halogen‐containing flame retardants are not preferred for environmental reasons. Herein, a halogen‐free intumescent flame‐retardant ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA/IFR) system containing organic montmorillonite (OMMT) and graphene nanosheets (GNSs) is fabricated with well dispersion structure, enhanced thermal‐oxidative resistance at high temperature. Interestingly, the amount of residual chars from thermogravimetric analysis is increased to 12.7 wt % at 700 °C, the EVA/IFR composite containing both OMMT and GNSs exhibits the best flame retardancy with the lowest peak heat release rate value of 529.58 kW m?2, and the highest limited oxygen index value of 24.8%. The excellent flame retardancy is attributed to the formation of complete and compact protective char layer. Furthermore, the decreases of the mechanical properties caused by the addition of IFR are relieved and a high volume resistivity is maintained when combining OMMT and GNSs in the EVA/IFR system together. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
