Abstract— A thin and flexible LSI driver with a thickness of less than 35 μm for a passive‐matrix‐driven Quick‐Response Liquid‐Powder Display (QR‐LPD?) was successfully mounted onto the flexible printed circuit (FPC) and the back substrates of a flexible QR‐LPD?. Amounted LSI driver on a plastic substrate shows no significant degradation in the driving performances and maintains physical flexibility without any connection failures. This technology can realize a fully flexible electronic paper in combination with a plastic‐substrate QR‐LPD? fabricated by a roll‐to‐roll process. 相似文献

Abstract— A 3‐m‐long rugged flexible display having a novel single‐plastic‐substrate structure has been demonstrated with a coated cholesteric liquid‐crystal mixture. The display is designed to be fabricated by a roll‐to‐roll process to increase productivity at a competitive cost. It has the advantage of having almost no limitation in display length. The high‐resolution (300‐dpi) monochrome cholesteric liquid‐crystal display (ChLCD) can be achieved by using a photo‐addressing method. A single‐layered 10.4‐in. color ChLCD also has been developed with good color and contrast. 相似文献

Abstract— Paper‐like displays as thin as 290 μm have been developed using QR‐LPD technology. We fabricated two types of displays. One is a dot‐matrix type with a 160 × 160 array of pixels and a 3.1‐in.‐diagonal viewable image size. The other is a segmented type for clock use. Each display has a paper‐like appearance and exhibits high contrast. Plastic substrates with a thickness of 120 μm were used, resulting in flexible displays that can be bent up to a radius of curvature of 20 mm. 相似文献

Abstract— We have developed new powder materials that exhibit liquid behavior, which can lead to the realization of novel bistable and reflective displays having paper‐white appearance, high contrast, and quick response. Two types of display were demonstrated, one had 160 × 160 array of pixels and the other had 320 × 320 in a 3.1‐in.‐diagonal viewable image size corresponding to 66 and 132 dpi, respectively. These displays were driven by passive‐matrix addressing. The displays showed a reflectivity of more than 41%, a contrast more than 1:10, and a pixel response time of less than 0.2 msec. The seven‐segment display for use in clocks was also demonstrated. 相似文献

A flexible hybrid substrate was developed and demonstrated for roll‐to‐roll (R2R) manufacturing. Layer‐by‐layer misalignment can be well controlled within 5 µm. Top‐gate amorphous InGaZnO thin‐film transistor was fabricated on the flexible hybrid substrate by R2R process for the first time. A 4.3‐in. segment‐type reflective Electro‐Phoretic Display (EPD) display was also demonstrated to show the R2R capability of flexible substrates. 相似文献

Abstract— A scalable manufacturing process for fabricating active‐matrix backplanes on low‐cost flexible substrates, a key enabler for electronic‐paper displays, is presented. This process is based on solution processing, ink‐jet printing, and laser patterning. A multilayer architecture is employed to enable high aperture ratio and array performance. These backplanes were combined with E Ink electrophoretic media to create high‐performance displays that have high contrast, are bistable, and can be flexed repeatedly to a radius of curvature of 5 mm. 相似文献

Electrophoretic display (EPD) has been a prevailing paper‐like display technology for years, owing to its advantages of flexibility, low‐power consumption, and good sunlight readability. However, it is regrettable that the black/white EPD still dominates the majority of the market while a commercially sold full‐color EPD is still unavailable. In this paper, we proposed a facile yet feasible method to fabricate a color EPD by a tape‐assisted transfer method, which is the first demonstration using transfer method to achieve color micro‐encapsulated EPD. 相似文献

Abstract— A driving waveform based on the powder charge of a quick‐response liquid‐powder display (QR‐LPD®) was investigated. The charging mechanisms for contact charging and triboelectric charging determine the powder charge of a QR‐LPD®. In this letter, driving waveforms containing both charging mechanisms are used for driving a QR‐LPD®. As the experimental results indicate, the charge of the powder accumulates according to the image refresh times. The waveform of a pixel voltage with a slight frictional charge achieves a better contrast ratio for a QR‐LPD®. 相似文献

Abstract— Despite a steep increase in commercial devices comprising paper‐like displays, a much desired feature is still missing: bright full‐color electronic paper. A new reflective‐display technology has been developed to solve this issue. For the first time, the principles behind this in‐plane electrophoretic technology will be presented, which enables the realization of full‐color reflective displays with a higher brightness than presently available e‐paper technologies, without compromising paper‐like properties such as viewing angle and ultra‐low power consumption. An additional major advantage (e.g., for future low‐cost manufacturing) is that, besides direct‐drive and active‐matrix configurations, a passive‐matrix option with analog gray levels has been successfully developed. 相似文献

Abstract— Several leading technologies for flexible liquid‐crystal displays have been developed recently at ERSO. The roll‐to‐roll compatible techniques, polymer‐added liquid crystal, have been applied on a film‐like substrate. A flexible black‐and‐white cholesteric liquid‐crystal display was also implemented by photo‐induced phase separation. Color filters placed on a plastic substrate by a low‐temperature manufacturing process was successfully fabricated. A novel design of a wide‐viewing‐angle color plastic LCD was also proposed. 相似文献

Abstract— We demonstrated an A4‐paper‐sized flexible ferroelectric liquid‐crystal (FLC) color displays fabricated by using a new plastic‐substrate‐based process which was developed for large‐sized devices. Finely patterned color filters and ITO electrodes were formed on a plastic substrate by a transfer method to avoid surface roughness and thermal distortion of the substrate, which induce disordering of the FLC molecular alignment. The thickness of an FLC/monomer solution sandwiched by two plastic‐film substrates was well controlled over a large area by using flexographic printing and lamination techniques. Molecular‐aligned polymer walls and fibers were formed in the FLC by a two‐step photopolymerization‐induced phase‐separation method using UV‐light irradiation. A fabricated A4‐sized flexible‐sheet display for color‐segment driving was able to exhibit color images even when it was bent. 相似文献

Abstract— An inorganic‐dominated silica/polyimide (PI) hybrid film has been successfully developed for the fabrication of flexible AMOLEDs. The existence of networks between silica particles in the PI matrix have been confirmed by 3‐D tomography, respectively. The inorganic—organic hybrid film was achieved by roll‐type processing with a variety of attractive properties, such as low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE, 20 ppm/°C), high transmittance (within the wavelength range of 400–700 nm), excellent flexibility, and high Young's modulus. Additionally, a flexible color‐filter, an AMEPD, and a flexible touch film were fabricated on hybrid film. 相似文献

Abstract— The aim of this study was to measure reading experiences on curved paper‐like displays. The experimental materials were mockups that consisted of printed paper attached to a curved plastic surface. The experiment participants held the mockups in their hands and evaluated the reading experience with them. Twelve font sizes, two curvature magnitudes, and two curvature directions were used in the experiment. The results showed that reading text on a curved surface was easier when the curvature direction is perpendicular to the text direction. It was also found that concave surfaces were regarded as better in cases where the text direction was the same as the curvature direction. 相似文献

Abstract— LCDs based on a luminescent dichroic‐dye‐doped non‐absorbing cholesteric LC with positive dielectric anisotropy is proposed. In the initial state, the orientation of the dye molecules provides effective light absorption and irradiation. By applying an electric field to the cell, the absorption and thus the luminescence is absent. A two‐color luminescence could be achieved by sandwiching two cells: the upper cell consists of a cholesteric LC with two dyes (sensitizer and emitter) and is used with an applied voltage (active cell); the lower cell consists of a cholesteric LC doped with one dye and works without applying a voltage (passive cell). The performance characteristics of luminescent dye‐doped cholesteric‐LCDs were investigated. 相似文献

Abstract— A fast‐response and wide‐view liquid‐crystal display (LCD) using the crossed fringe‐field‐switching (CFFS) mode is proposed, where the fringe‐field electrodes exist on both the top and bottom substrates. The bottom fringe field is used to turn on the LC directors and the top fringe field is used to assist in the LC decay process. The decay time is reduced by ~2× compared to that of the conventional FFS mode between the full bright and dark states, and more than a 2× improvement is obtained for other gray‐scale transitions. This CFFS mode also preserves the wide‐view characteristics as the conventional FFS mode. Its applications to LCD TVs and monitors for reducing image blur are addressed. 相似文献

Abstract— Two newly derived characterization models for a liquid‐crystal (LC) display have been tested for five LC‐based displays. Data measured from a series of test colors indicated that all LC‐based displays showed similar characteristics, including an S‐shaped tone curve and poor channel chromaticity constancy. Because they include a hyperbolic function in their definition, the models do not have analytical inverses, and so iterative mathematical techniques are applied. It was shown that a new characterization model based on a hyperbolic function fits the tone curve very accurately with only four coefficients per channel for any type of LCD. In addition, it was also shown that the first derivative of the function provides a means of accurate correction of the chromaticity variation. 相似文献

We established a fabrication process of flexible displays, adopting a transfer technology using an inorganic tungsten‐separation‐layer. Our separation process requires physical force and water. Tungsten oxide over tungsten in the separation layer plays a key role in separation: water injection into the tungsten oxide reduces the force necessary for separation. In this study, we describe the apparatus we built for the fabrication process of flexible displays. This apparatus fabricated an 8k (7680 × 4320 effective pixels) flexible organic light‐emitting diode display. 相似文献

Abstract— Rolls of flexible displays or electronic paper have recently been prepared by a high‐speed roll‐to‐roll manufacturing process based on SiPix's novel Microcup® and top‐sealing technologies. Both Microcup® electrophoretic displays (EPDs) and LCDs have been demonstrated. The display rolls are format flexible and may be cut into desirable size and shape for a variety of applications. High‐performance flexible passive‐matrix Microcup® EPDs having a wide range of threshold voltages have also been demonstrated. 相似文献

To come out with a successful organic light‐emitting diode (OLED) lighting business, it is very important to have clear differentiation of OLED from LEDs. Flexible OLED has merits, such as capability to be mounted on the curved wall, which is not easy for LEDs to achieve the feature. There are several approaches to make flexible OLEDs especially among those plastic barrier films that can bring high level of flexibility, which could not be achieved by any conventional lighting method. In this paper, barrier films with various water vapor transmission rate values, including 10? 6 order, are applied, and the conditions to have almost no dark spot growth under 85 °C and 85% high temperature/humidity test are shown. Flexible OLED panels are manufactured with the world's first roll‐to‐roll equipment using plastic barrier film. 相似文献

Abstract— A100‐μm‐thick 320 × 240‐pixel active‐matrix display integrated into a functional‐device prototype is presented. The active matrix is composed of alternating layers of organic materials and gold. A six‐mask photolithographic process is used. An electrophoretic electronic imaging film is laminated on top of the active matrix. The display is bendable to a radius of 7.5 mm for more than 30,000 repetitions. 相似文献
