The relative importance of interference and exploitative competition from Daphnia was tested in contrast to known role of Cyclops vicinus predation, influencing the rotifer community in Římov Reservoir during spring period. The abundances of five dominant rotifer species and their birth and death rates were analysed, together with changes in chl‐a concentration, HNF, bacteria biomass and the abundances of predator and competitor species, from high frequency sampling. Development of loricated species (Keratella cochlearis, K. quadrata and Kellicottia longispina) was driven predominantly by food availability. The dominant soft‐bodied species Polyarthra spp. and Synchaeta lakowitziana were affected predominantly through C. vicinus predation. The role of mechanical interference from D. galeata, although may be important in a limited periods was overclouded by predation and exploitative competition in general. Food web analyses have been fundamental in understanding community organization and ecosystem functioning. To date, a number of studies demonstrate that stream food webs depend to a large extent on allochthonous detritus, but there are more recent studies that show a high degree of autochthony. Our food‐web study was carried out in three Andean rivers (Coilaco, Guampoe and Trancura) within the catchment area of Toltén River in southern Chile. Based on the analyses of 4251 invertebrate gut contents, we found that these Andean stream food webs are dominated by herbivores (range: 50–73% of all species) supported by a species‐rich algal (basal) component, and characterized by a low proportion of omnivores (range: 8–27% of all species) and predatory species (range: 10–24%). Significant differences in the number of feeding links of the herbivores Meridialis diguillina and Antarctoperla michaelseni and the omnivore Smicridea chilensis were found between seasons. The spring herbivore Aubertoperla sp. showed significant differences between rivers. S. chilensis fed on 50 different prey items as compared with the herbivores whose maximum number of links ranged between 37 and 40. Web sizes ranged between 93 and 131 species and the proportion of top species was distinctly lower than those of basal (up to 0.651 in Coilaco River) and intermediate species. Direct connectance (links per species2) values were low and similar among rivers (range: 0.051–0.074), whereas mean food chain length ranged between 2.23 and 2.90. The distributions of web property values from the Andean rivers differed from those previously published. In contrast to previous predictions, mean food chain length in these Andean streams displayed a scale‐invariant pattern across different web sizes, but it was significantly related to the proportion of intermediate species. 相似文献

1. Micro-crustacea of the genus Daphnia and Eudiaptomus have evolved different physiological mechanisms for coping with life in a rapidly changing environment. In this paper, we analyse some of the physical and biological factors influencing the winter abundance of the two species in a small lake (Esthwaite Water in Cumbria).
2. The results demonstrate that much of the year-to-year variation in their relative abundance can be related to long-term changes in the weather. The highest numbers of Daphnia were typically found in cold, calm winters when small flagellates were relatively abundant. In contrast, the highest numbers of Eudiaptomus were found in mild, windy winters when the phytoplankton community was dominated by colonial diatoms.

Year-to-year variations in the winter abundance of Eudiaptomus had no effect on their subsequent development but the numbers of overwintering Daphnia had a significant effect on the size of their first spring 'cohort'. 1. According to stoichiometric theory, zooplankters have a species‐specific elemental composition. Daphniids have a relatively high phosphorus concentration in their tissues and copepods high nitrogen. Daphniids should, therefore, be more sensitive to phosphorus limitation and copepods more sensitive to nitrogen. A 2‐year study of a shallow marl lake in the west of Ireland investigated whether population fluctuations of the two dominant taxa, Daphnia spp. and the calanoid Eudiaptomus gracilis, were associated with the availability of phosphorus and nitrogen. 2. In accordance with stoichiometric predictions, Daphnia and Eudiaptomus reproduction had contrasting relationships with dietary phosphorus and nitrogen availability. Egg production by Daphnia was negatively associated with the ratio of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) : total phosphorus (TP) and the ratio of light to TP which was used as an indirect index for seston carbon (C) : phosphorus (P). Conversely calanoid egg production had a positive relationship with the DIN : TP ratio and was unrelated to the estimated C : P (light : TP) ratio. 3. Daphnia biomass was not, however, correlated with phosphorus availability, and neither was calanoid biomass correlated with nitrogen. The high ratio of DIN : TP when Daphnia dominated the zooplankton biomass and the low ratio when calanoids dominated, is consistent with Daphnia acting as a sink for phosphorus and calanoids as a sink for nitrogen and suggests consumer‐driven nutrient recycling. 相似文献

The partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) in lake ecosystems varies over four orders of magnitude and is affected by local and global environmental perturbations associated with both natural and anthropogenic processes. Little is known, however, about how changes in pCO2 extend into the function and structure of food webs in freshwater ecosystems. To fill this gap, we performed laboratory experiments using the ecologically important planktonic herbivore Daphnia and its algal prey under a natural range of pCO2 with low light and phosphorus supplies. The experiment showed that increased pCO2 stimulated algal growth but reduced algal P : C ratio. When feeding on algae grown under high pCO2, herbivore growth decreased regardless of algal abundance. Thus, high CO2‐raised algae were poor food for Daphnia. Short‐term experimental supplementation of PO4 raised the P content of the high CO2‐raised algae and improved Daphnia growth, indicating that low Daphnia growth rates under high pCO2 conditions were due to lowered P content in the algal food. These results suggest that, in freshwater ecosystems with low nutrient supplies, natural processes as well as anthropogenic perturbations resulting in increased pCO2 enhance algal production but reduce energy and mass transfer efficiency to herbivores by decreasing algal nutritional quality. 相似文献

Water from a hypertrophic lake rich in filamentous blue-green algae was passed through a continuous-flow system of aquaria containing Daphnia magna, and a control system without Daphnia. Daphnia caused a significant decrease in the blue-green algal density, and a two-fold reduction in filament length. It is suggested that feeding activity of Daphnia may result in an increase in the availability of blue-green filaments to filter-feeding cladocerans. 相似文献

Development times and survival of nauplii and copepodites of the freshwater calanoid Eudiaptomus gracilis were measured on comparably sized Cryptomonas sp. and two strains of Chlamydomonas reinhardii under food saturated conditions (1 mg C L−1) to investigate the nutritional quality of these algae.
2. Cryptomonas sp. supported complete ontogenesis of nauplii to adults, whereas both strains of C. reinhardii were inadequate for the development of nauplii and copepodites and resulted in high mortality. The nutritional deficiency of both strains of C. reinhardii was compensated for by Cryptomonas sp. when the latter constituted ≥50% of dietary carbon. Pulses of Cryptomonas sp. had a similar compensatory effect.

The structuring role and predation impact of Cyclops vicinus on the rotifer community was studied using in situ enclosure experiments in Římov Reservoir during the spring of 2000. Seasonal changes in abundance and birth rates of the rotifer species Synchaeta lakowitziana , Polyarthra spp., Keratella cochlearis and Kellicottia longispina were related to predation pressure, i.e. selectivity and cropping rates of C. vicinus . All four rotifer species were found to be consumed by C. vicinus whose predation rates showed a marked succession through the spring period and corresponded to changes in the relative abundance of the pelagic species. The highest predation rates exhibited by C. vicinus were on Synchaeta lakowitziana and Polyarthra spp., being 11.3 and 6.4 ind Cyclops –1 day–1 respectively. The activity of the predator switched among three types of preferred food during the spring period. The most preferred, Synchaeta, was replaced by Polyarthra after Synchaeta became extinct and these species were replaced by Keratella when both soft‐bodied forms were not available in sufficient quantities. Loricated species (K. cochlearis and K. longispina) were consumed at a slower rate. We calculated the proportion of rotifer production cropped day–1 in order to estimate the predation impact of C. vicinus , which ranged from 11.6 to more than 100% over time and rotifer species. Bighead carp, Aristichthys nobilis Rich., dry weight food assimilation rates ranged from 37 to 49% (average 43%). The filtration rate ranged from 185 to 256 ml h–1 g–1 and was higher in larger fish. Bighead carp filtered Chlorella vulgaris (6 ± 0.4 µ diam) inefficiently (0.1 %), but the efficiency increased to 13 % for the larger Scenedesmus sp. (12 ± 1.7 µ diam). Fish kept in cages were forced to filter-feed, whereas fish kept free in the same pond were opportunistic plankton and bottom feeders. Free fish grew faster. 相似文献

Food consumption, gut transit times and assimilation efficiencies of the temperate fishes Lipophrys pholis and Parablennius sanguinolentus (Blenniidae) and Gobius cobitis (Gobiidae. when fed the green alga Ulva lactuca were determined at four temperatures in the laboratory. Food consumption increased and gut transit times decreased with increase in temperature in all three species. Assimilation efficiencies for algal carbon and nitrogen did not vary with temperature in G. cobitis . Carbon but not nitrogen assimilation efficiency varied with temperature in P. sanguinolentus , and both carbon and nitrogen assimilation efficiencies changed broadly with temperature in L. pholis , the most omnivorous of the three fishes. Assimilation efficiencies of all three species were generally within the previously reported ranges for herbivorous marine fishes. These species are thus clearly capable of extracting energy from algal food sources. 相似文献

Lake seston labelled by 14CO2, 14C-acetate and 32-PO4 in parallel was used in zooplankton feeding experiments and checked for size distribution of the labelled particulates. The in situ experiments were made to find out if depressed Eudiaptomus and Holopedium clearance rates, in an artificially fertilized lake where seston was dominated by μ-algae, were due to low retention of such algae. Addition of a labelled reference alga (Chlamydomonas sp.) was used to find out if high food concentrations (above the Incipient Limiting Concentration) or toxins caused the depressions. Clearance rates mostly ranked highest for CO2-labelled seston followed by 32P and 14C-acetate labelled seston, reflecting approximately the size distributions of the labelled food. Clearance rates for the added reference alga were high and similar in the fertilized lake and in an oligotrophic reference lake. It was concluded that the detected “rate depression” could be explained purely by poor retention of small particles (passive size selection) by the crustaceans studied, but that active food selection offers optional explanations to the experimental results. 相似文献

Ingestion rates where estimated for daphnids, Cyclops spp. and Bosmina (Eubosmina) coregoni thersites fed hepatotoxic and non-toxic M. aeruginosa either separate or mixed with the readily available food alga Ankistrodesmus falcatus. The ingestion rates of hepatotoxic strains of M. aeruginosa are very low compared with those of A. falcatus or non-toxic M. aeruginosa HUB 5-3 fed to Daphnia magna or D. longispina. However, a close relationship between ingestion rate of different M. aeruginosa strains and their toxicity could not be observed. Addition of the toxic strain M. aeruginosa HUB 5-2-4 reduces the ingestion rates of A. falcatus progressively due to increased food rejection by D. magna. Additionally, the assimilation efficiency of M. aeruginosa HUB 5-2-4 is two times lower compared with A. falcatus and M. aeruginosa HUB 5-3 leading to strong starvation. 相似文献

Cod larvae. Gadus morhua L., 24 days posthatch, were fed different species of algae in order to evaluate both rates and mechanisms of ingestion. The results were compared with cod larvae feeding on a natural assemblage of algae in a lagoon. Small algae (Nannochloris atomus Butcher, 14 pm) were found to enter the larval gut in accordance with drinking rate. In contrast, the cod larvae concentrated larger algae [Dunaliella salina (Dunal) Teodor. 6 10 pm] in the gut at rates from 492 to 7251 times the drinking rate. D. salina was captured in the slits between the visceral arches, and increased activity when the algae was added indicate that the cod larvae are active filter feeders during early larval stages. In the gut of cod larvae from the lagoon the fraction of algal material with diameter larger than 8 pm was 39.2% in 7-day-old larvae while, in 12-day-old larvae it had decreased to 12.6%. The most conspicuous characteristics of gut content in the youngest larvae were green spheres (10 μn) and a naked dinoflagellate (20 μn). Quantifying species trophic interaction strengths is crucial for understanding community dynamics and has significant implications for pest management and species conservation. DNA-based methods to identify species interactions have revolutionized these efforts, but a significant limitation is the poor ability to quantify the strength of trophic interactions, that is the biomass or number of prey consumed. We present an improved pipeline, called Lazaro, to map unassembled shotgun reads to a comprehensive arthropod mitogenome database and show that the number of prey reads detected is quantitatively predicted from the prey biomass consumed, even for indirect predation. Two feeding bioassays were performed: starved coccinellid larvae consuming different numbers of aphids (Prey Quantity bioassay), and starved coccinellid larvae consuming a chrysopid larvae that had consumed aphids (Direct and Indirect Predation bioassay). Prey taxonomic assignment against a mitochondrial genome database had high accuracy (99.8% positive predictive value) and the number of prey reads was directly related to the number of prey consumed and inversely related to the elapsed time since consumption with high significance (r2 = .932, p = 4.92E-6). Aphids were detected up to 6 h after direct predation plus 3 h after indirect predation (9 h in total) and detection was related to the predator-specific decay rates. Lazaro enabled quantitative predictions of prey consumption across multiple trophic levels with high taxonomic resolution while eliminating all false positives, except for a few confirmed contaminants, and may be valuable for characterizing prey consumed by field-sampled predators. - Generalistic interactions between predator and prey may vary with ecosystem type, predator traits, and prey traits, but the interplay of these factors has not been assessed in ground food webs.
- We investigated trophic interactions of ground-dwelling spiders across eight forests in European Russia associated with body size, hunting strategy, microhabitat specialization, potential prey type, potential prey population density, and forest type (coniferous vs. broadleaved). We analyzed 128 individual spiders, including juveniles, all identified to the family level with two complementary methods: molecular gut content analysis, and stable isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen.
- The results suggest that feeding frequency of spiders is affected by predator body size and by selection of certain prey type. Stable isotope analysis showed similar trophic niches among spider families, varying moderately with forest type. Larger spiders had higher Δ13C values than smaller ones, but similar Δ15N values, suggesting that different size classes of spiders belong to different food chains. Results based on stable isotope and molecular gut content analyses were weakly linked, indicating them targeting different trophic niche dimensions.
- At least for the group-level interactions, family identity and hunting strategy of predator has little predictive power while predator body size and prey traits affected trophic niche dimensions calling for future studies in this direction. Large spiders feed more and rely on different basal resources than small spiders, suggesting that including small species and juveniles provides a more comprehensive picture of food web organization.

Aims: To characterize the effect of edible blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) on the gastrointestinal microbiota of mice.
Methods and Results: C57BL/6J mice were fed a diet supplemented with 0% or 5% dried Nostoc commune , Spirulina platensis or Afanizominon flos-aquae (w/w) for 4 weeks. Molecular fingerprinting of the colonic microbiota using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis revealed that administration of N. commune induced major alterations in colonic microbiota composition, while administration of S. platensis or A. flos-aquae had a more subtle impact. Community profile analysis revealed that administration of N. commune did not reduce microbial diversity indices of the colonic microbiota. Despite its pronounced effects on the bacterial composition in the colon, total bacterial numbers in the gut of mice fed N. commune were not reduced as assessed by quantitative real-time PCR and bacteriological culture.
Conclusions: The results presented here show that administration of blue-green algae, and especially N. commune , alters colonic microbiota composition in mice with limited effects on total bacterial numbers or microbial diversity.
Significance and Impact of the Study: Blue-green algae are consumed in many countries as a source of nutrients and to promote health, and they are intensively studied for their pharmaceutical value. Daphnia pulex and D. mitsukuri are morphologically similar and distributed in small lowland Japanese lakes. Daphnia pulex in Japan reproduces by obligate parthenogenesis and is composed of four different lineages (JPN1–JPN4) with North American origins. Although this species is found throughout Japan, JPN1 has the largest distribution range, followed by JPN2. Daphnia mitsukuri is a putatively endemic species that is now rarely found in Japan. Since Daphnia share the same algal food, the difference in distribution ranges among the four asexual D. pulex lineages and D. mitsukuri may be caused by exploitative competition for algal food. To examine this possibility, we measured the threshold food concentration (TFC) at zero-net growth rate and the food concentration required for 50% of the individuals to survive (FC50). In addition, we examined the effects of temperature on the somatic growth rate (SGR) and the mortality rates of four asexual D. pulex lineages and D. mitsukuri. The experiments showed that TFC was lowest in D. pulex JPN1 and highest in D. mitsukuri, supporting the idea that the largest distribution range of JPN1 is due to its superiority in inter-lineage competition, and that the distribution area of D. mitsukuri is reduced through exploitative competition with D. pulex. However, although JPN2 was found in relatively large areas, it had higher TFC than JPN3 and JPN4, which appear in very limited areas. These results clearly showed that the difference in distribution ranges among D. pulex lineages are not necessarily determined by their competitive superiority alone. 相似文献

In addition the respiration and feeding rates of matureDaphnia magna females were measured simultaneously at differentChlorella concentrations. It was found that, besides the expected effect of food concentration on the feeding rate, there also was an effect of food concentration on the respiration rate. The relative contributions of invertebrate predation (Notonectidae: Anisops spp.), food limitation, and certain abiotic factors in driving the population dynamics of Daphnia carinata were studied for a two year period in a large farm dam in southern Victoria, Australia. Detailed measurements were made on the population densities of Daphnia and Anisops spp., the amount of food available, the nutritional status, and the size-specific fecundity of Daphnia. The density of the Daphnia population at the field site oscillated closely with water temperature. The amplitude of the population fluctuations varied seasonally, being much greater during the warmer months of the year and switching to fluctuations with low peaks when water temperature dropped below approximately 15°C. Anisops spp. densities were greatest in winter and declined during the spring of each year. Nymphs appeared in late spring and early summer and numerically dominated the population. During the warmer periods of the year, the daphnid population went through a series of rapid growth phases leading to over-exploitation of food resources and subsequent population collapses. Daphnia population densities were not correlated with Anisops numbers suggesting that predation was not a major regulatory factor during the warmer periods of the year. When water temperatures fell below ca. 15°C daphnid population densities remained low despite high food levels. During this period the impact of Anisops may have been greater. Two distinct phases were identified: a warm water period when food limitation was the main regulatory factor, and a cool water period when Anisops predation may have been the paramount factor. Low oxygen concentrations were associated with heavy rainfall in the spring and may have had a limiting effect on Daphnia for short periods.
