以组合波导理论为基础,分析了1480/1550nm波分复用器的耦合区横截面形状和尺寸与偏振灵敏度的关系。着重比较了矩形截面和椭圆形截面二种波分复用器的偏振性能,并发现当椭圆截面的短轴与长轴之比为1:1.88时,器件性能几乎与偏振无关。研制成功的1480/1550nm波分复用器的波长隔离度大于20dB.偏振灵敏度小于0.1dB.附加损耗小于0.5dB。  相似文献

The realization of low loss optical channel waveguides and passive waveguide structures by a germanium indiffusion process into silicon will be discussed. Employing relatively simple technological processing like standard lithography, e-beam evaporation and diffusion, single-mode waveguides could be produced exhibiting polarization independent losses of as low as 0.3 dB/cm at wavelengths of λ=1.3 μm and λ=1.55 μm. S-bends fabricated with the same technology offered an excess loss of 1 dB at a radius of around 5 mm without any optimization. For a Y-junction designed with S-bends the maximum opening angle was determined to be 1.8° if an excess loss of 1 dB is allowed. The examination of directional couplers with various coupling lengths and distances revealed an excellent agreement between measurement and theory  相似文献

设计了一种可用于阵列波导光栅(AWG)解调集成微系统的绝缘体上硅(SOI)基2×2多模干涉(MMI)耦合器,用光束传播法(BPM)对MMI耦合器进行了模拟。耦合器输入/输出波导采用倒锥形,多模干涉区尺寸为6μm×57μm。在TE偏振中心波长为1.55μm时,器件附加损耗为0.46dB,不均匀性为0.06dB。在1.49~1.59μm波长范围内耦合器的附加损耗小于1.55dB。仿真结果表明所设计的2×2MMI耦合器体积小、附加损耗低、波长响应范围宽、分光均匀,符合片上集成系统的要求。  相似文献

Optical waveguides fabricated on a yttrium iron garnet (YIG) substrate are integrated onto a semiconductor surface by using ridge waveguides patterned onto a prefabricated recess in the YIG surface. The recess separates the waveguides from the semiconductor substrate with an air-gap. This structure makes it possible to avoid coupling light within the YIG waveguides into the semiconductor substrate which has a higher refractive index. The excess optical loss due to the coupling can be as low as ⩽0.1 dB/cm with a 1-μm-wide air-gap. The calculated coupling loss is confirmed by comparing the guided TE and TM modes  相似文献

We report a simple milled-groove process integrated with a two-step ion-diffused waveguide fabrication for efficient coupling between single-mode fibers and integrated optical waveguides andY- branches. We demonstrate such a coupling technique using a) a multimode transition to single-mode waveguide coupler, and b) an integrated optical 3-dB branching waveguide coupler from a single-mode fiber to silver/sodium ion-enchanged waveguide components. The coupling loss was about 1-2 dB over a propagation length of 2 cm at an operating wavelength of 633 nm.  相似文献

Next-generation optical-communications systems require on-wafer integration of active and passive opto-electronic components to increase operating speed and reduce packaging costs. Increased coupling efficiencies between semiconductor waveguides and optical fibers are of particular interest. A simple and cost-effective method of fabricating a mode-size converter monolithically integrated with a semiconductor waveguide is presented. An on-wafer mode-size converter reduces the number of interfaces in an opto-electronic circuit and improves the coupling efficiency between semiconductor waveguide and optical fiber. Vertically tapered epilayers are deposited in a single epitaxial growth run using shadow-masked growth by chemical-beam epitaxy, avoiding complex and expensive processing and regrowth stages. Waveguides that taper vertically and horizontally over /spl sim/1 mm for gradual expansion of the mode size are demonstrated. Waveguide loss measurements showed that there was negligible loss across the tapered regions. A loss of <2 dB/interface was achieved compared with /spl sim/8 dB/interface for a butt-coupled discrete device.  相似文献

Single mode silicon-on-insulator rib waveguides offer a weak lateral confinement, which makes it difficult to design high-performance multimode interference couplers (MMIs) based on these waveguides. Here, a complete design procedure for single etch step MMIs with tapered rib access waveguides is presented, which yields low excess loss (0.1 dB) and good imbalance (0.02 dB). Furthermore, polarization dependence is low, and high fabrication tolerances are achieved, especially with respect to etch depth.   相似文献

针对熔融拉锥法难以应用于制作特种光纤耦合器的情况,研究设计了一种适用于光子晶体光纤(PCF)或椭芯保偏光纤(ECPMF)等特种光纤耦合器制作的光纤侧边抛磨、侧面熔粘(FSA)耦合方法。通过建立仿真模型优化了光纤侧边抛磨的抛磨区包层剩余厚度等关键参数,利用侧边抛磨单模光纤(SMF)成功制作出FSA侧边抛磨光纤耦合器,并测试了光纤耦合器的相关特性参数。实验结果显示,侧面FSA耦合方法可制作耦合比(CR)为0~90%的特种光纤耦合器;所制作的光纤耦合器附加损耗(EL)小于0.5dB;在100nm光波长范围内,波长相关损耗(WDL)小于1dB;耦合输出端的偏振相关损耗(PDL)在光波长1310nm、1550nm处分别为0.30dB、0.45dB。研究结果验证了光纤侧边抛磨、侧面FSA耦合方法制作特种光纤耦合器的可行性,为有特殊要求的PCF或ECPMF等特种光纤耦合器制作奠定了方法基础。  相似文献

Low-loss high-silica single-mode channel optical waveguides of 0.1 dB/cm have been fabricated on crystal silicon substrates with fibre coupling losses of less than 0.05 dB by flame hydrolysis deposition and reactive ion etching. We describe a compact 1.5%-/spl Delta/ athermal silica-based 100-GHz-spacing 16-channel arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) multi/demultiplexer with a modified groove design for a very low excess loss. We propose new approaches for modifying the shape of the grooves and the arrayed waveguides and optimize the shape modifications for 1.5%-/spl Delta/ waveguides. By employing this modified groove design, we greatly reduced the groove excess loss from 1.9 to 0.4 dB in the 1.5%-/spl Delta/ athermal AWG.  相似文献

We report detailed results on the achievement of very high optical throughput for titanium diffused lithium niobate waveguides coupled between input and output single-mode fibers. By determining appropriate diffusion parameters to obtain excellent dimensional match between the fiber and waveguide modes and simultaneously low propagation loss, we have achieved total measured fiber-waveguide-fiber insertion loss as low as 1 dB for a 1 cm long waveguide atlambda = 1.32 mum. The relative contributions of coupling and propagation loss are determined. Very good correlation is found between the coupling loss and the match between the fiber and waveguide mode dimensions. Design data for diffusion parameters to obtain good mode match for arbitrary fiber dimension are presented.  相似文献

A tunable TE/TM polarization splitter, based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with an electrooptic switch, is demonstrated in GaAs-AlGaAs. Symmetric and asymmetric Y-branches employing height-tapered waveguides are used to achieve power splitting and mode sorting, respectively, in the interferometer. The device has an extinction ratio of /spl sim/20 dB and an excess loss less than 1.5 dB for both TE and TM polarized light. The device can be reconfigured by tuning the switching voltage for operation at both 1.3- and 1.55-pm wavelengths.  相似文献

Four-channel multiplexers and four-wavelength bandpass filters based on elliptical Bragg reflectors (EBRs) are discussed. The channel spacing is 50 Å near 1.56 μm. The EBRs are narrowband elliptical mirrors that can refocus light from an input waveguide to any one of a number of output waveguides. Spectrally, they perform similarly to Bragg reflectors. The devices were fabricated on silicon using silica-based waveguide technology. The elliptical gratings with 0.53-μm periods were patterned using deep UV spatial frequency doubling photolithography. Multiplexers with single filtering and double filtering were demonstrated. With single filtering, the fiber-to-fiber insertion loss was 3.0±0.5 dB, and the crosstalk was -20 dB; with double filtering, the insertion loss was 4.0±0.5 dB, and the crosstalk was -30 dB. About 2 dB of this loss was due to coupling between the fibers and the waveguide. The additive loss associated with the EBR, including propagation, Bragg reflection, and coupling between input and output waveguides, was about 1 dB  相似文献

We report the design, fabrication, packaging, and characterization of a polarization independent integrated optical InP multiplexer/demultiplexer module. The device is based on a vertically etched diffractive grating and separates four channels with 4 spacing in the 1.55 μm window. An n-/n+-InP layer structure with very low birefringence results in a shift of the passbands between transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarization of less than 0.1 nm. With a self-aligned flip-chip mounting technique light is optically coupled from the input and output waveguides to an array of lensed single mode fibers with a coupling efficiency of more than 80%. The packaging includes temperature control that allows fine tuning of the channel passbands over 5 nm. Optical crosstalk is always better than -17 dB and fiber to fiber losses of 15 dB are achieved. The module has been successfully implemented in a 4×2.5 Gb/s WDM transmission system  相似文献

A significant bend loss reduction for z-cut Ti:LiNbO3 waveguides was achieved with a single and very efficient technique. The refractive index on the outer sides of an S bend was decreased through indiffusion of a double-MgO layer for reducing the radiation losses, and a broadening of the bent waveguide sections was used for further decreasing of the radiation losses and additionally reducing the transition losses. The acceptable bend radius for an allowed excess loss of 1 dB could thus be reduced from 24 mm down to 5 mm for TM polarization and from 26 mm down to 10 mm for TE polarization  相似文献

In order to demonstrate polymeric waveguide polarizers, photobleached polymer waveguides supporting both TE and TM modes are integrated with poling induced polymer waveguides that support either TE or TM modes. Fabrication parameters like UV exposures and poling voltages are controlled to reduce excess losses due to the mode profile mismatch between the connected waveguides. A TM-pass polarizer is realized by poling the polymer in the vertical direction. For TE-pass polarizer the polymer is poled horizontally by using four poling electrodes which enhance the uniformity of the poling field direction. The measured excess loss is less than 0.5 dB, and polarization extinction ratios for TM-pass and TE-pass polarizers are 20.7 dB and 17.1 dB, respectively.  相似文献

We report measurements of low-loss MOVPE-grown GaAlAs/GaAs strip-loaded waveguides with high coupling efficiency to single-mode fibres. A propagation loss of 2 dB/cm and a coupling efficiency of 70% has been achieved for a p+-i-n+-structure waveguide. A propagation loss of 0.7 dB/cm and a coupling efficiency of 61% has also been achieved for an n?-i-n?-structure waveguide.  相似文献
