A longitudinal study was carried out on two groups of workers engaged in tin/lead alloy welding in the telecommunication sector. The risk of exposure was evaluated by measuring levels of airborne lead (PbA) and the amount of lead absorbed (PbB). The-correlated effects were assessed by determining zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP) and hemoglobin levels (Hb) and red blood cell (RBC) count. We also recorded subjective symptoms reported by workers. One group of welders composed of 365 subjects underwent two monitoring sessions performed in 1991 and 1995, respectively (Group A). A second group of welders (whose number fluctuated between 148 and 247 subjects) underwent yearly testing for 7 consecutive years (1988-1994; Group B). Results indicated a very low risk of lead exposure during microwelding operations (PbA range, 1.5-24 micrograms/m3). In fact, blood concentrations of Pb (range, 5-55, micrograms/dL) among both groups of welders were significantly higher than those in the general population in Rome (PbB range, 5-16 micrograms/dL); nevertheless, they were significantly lower than the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's permissible exposure limits ZPP determined only in Group B of welders ranged from 5 to 16 micrograms/dL (median, 22 micrograms/dL). No variation was found in the other biological parameters investigated, and no health effects were observed. During the study period, the introduction of some technological innovations led to a further reduction in Pb exposure and, subsequently, to its total elimination. PbB concentrations gradually declined to lower values (6-36 micrograms/dL), and it was interesting to note that ZPP concentrations also decreased to normal levels (range, 2-47 micrograms/dL; median, 11 micrograms/dL), demonstrating that the effect of lead on heme synthesis may occur even at very low levels of Pb exposure.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: In Chile, there are several sources of environmental lead exposure. However, the few studies about lead levels in Chilean infants, do not allow to establish the prevalence of high lead levels in this population. AIM: To measure blood lead levels in nursing infants, living in rural and urban areas, from birth until two years of age. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Newborns from public maternity hospitals in Santiago and a rural area were selected for the study. An umbilical cord blood sample was obtained at birth and venous blood samples thereafter, every 6 months until the age of 24 months. Lead levels were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Atmospheric lead was measured simultaneously every week in Santiago and the rural area. RESULTS: Three hundred twelve children from Santiago and 113 from the rural area completed the 24 months follow-up. The mean lead exposure for infants living in Santiago and in the rural area was 1.23 +/- 0.66 and 0.19 +/- 0.15 micrograms/m3 respectively (p < 0.001). Mean blood levels were always higher in infants from Santiago, compared to those from the rural area. At 24 months, 4.5% of children from Santiago and 0.7% of children from the rural area had blood lead levels over 10 micrograms/dl. Significant risk factors for high lead levels were recent painting of the house where the infant lives, eating soil, biting banisters and familiar labor exposure to lead. CONCLUSIONS: Infants living in an urban area and exposed to increased atmospheric lead levels have higher blood lead levels than infants living in a rural area.  相似文献

Lead-contaminated water, soil, and paint have been recognized as potential sources of children's lead exposure for decades, but their contributions to lead intake among urban children remain poorly defined. This analysis was undertaken to estimate the relationship of environmental lead exposures to lead intake among a random sample of urban children, adjusted for exposure to lead-contaminated house dust. Analyses of 183 urban children enrolled in a random sample, cross sectional study were conducted. Children's blood and multiple measures of household dust, water, soil, and paint were analyzed for lead, and interviews were conducted to ascertain risk factors for childhood lead exposure. Environmental sources of lead, including house-dust, soil lead, and water lead, were independently associated with children's blood lead levels. In contrast, paint lead levels did not have a significant effect on blood lead levels after adjusting for other environmental exposures. An increase in water lead concentration from background levels to 0.015 mg/L, the current EPA water lead standard, was associated with an increase of 13.7% in the percentage of children estimated to have a blood lead concentration exceeding 10 micrograms/dL; increasing soil lead concentration from background to 400 micrograms/g was estimated to produce an increase of 11.6% in the percentage of children estimated to have a blood lead level exceeding 10 micrograms/dL, and increasing dust lead loading from background to 200 micrograms/ft2 is estimated to produce an increase of 23.3% in the percentage of children estimated to have a blood lead level exceeding 10 micrograms/dL. These data support the promulgation of health-based standards for lead-contaminated dust and soil and the progressive lowering of standards for lead-contaminated water as the definition of undue lead exposure has been modified.  相似文献

Sex-based differences in serum leptin concentrations have been reported in adolescence and adulthood. To discover when such differences were generated, serum leptin concentrations were measured in umbilical cord blood from 46 healthy infants and in the mother's blood at delivery. Considering the respective body weights of the mothers and infants (68.5 +/- 1.3 kg and 3.3 +/- 0.0 kg), umbilical cord concentrations of leptin were disproportionately high in the infants (9.4 +/- 1.2 micrograms/l) compared with those in the mothers (18.7 +/- 1.3 micrograms/l). There was a wide variation in the infants leptin values (1.2 +/- 56.8 micrograms/l) that did not correlate with height, weight, cephalic circumference, or any other growth-related parameter. The most striking differences emerged when results were analysed by sex: umbilical cord concentrations of leptin in the girls (12.9 +/- 2.2 micrograms/l) were significantly (P < 0.01) greater than those in the boys (6.8 +/- 0.9 micrograms/l), although no differences in leptin concentrations were observed between the mothers who gave birth to a girl (19.5 +/- 2.2 micrograms/l) and those who gave birth to a boy (18.1 +/- 1.7 micrograms/l). The sex-based differences were not attributable to any growth-related differences between the sexes, except heavier placental weights in the girls (P < 0.007) than in the boys. These differences in leptin concentrations may reflect a sex-based difference in the regulation of leptin production by the fetal adipose tissue.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to determine current lead exposure in the Barcelona population and to evaluate the changes occurred during the last 10 years. Blood lead concentration was investigated in a random sample of 694 healthy subjects (age range: 0-65 years). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Adults were random selected from a group of blood donors. Samples of children analysed were selected from subjects with a preoperatory analyses without any disease that could modify blood lead levels. Lead levels were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. RESULTS: Blood lead concentration was 4.06 +/- 1.4 micrograms/dl in umbilical cord, 8.9 +/- 2.9 micrograms/dl in the paediatric population and 7.8 +/- 4.2 micrograms/dl in the total of adults analyzed. There was statistical differences between the younger subjects and the older population. In 1984 the results found were 18.6 +/- 6.6 micrograms/dl. CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained show that in the last 10 years a reduction on the blood lead levels was occurred. This reduction is parallel with a diminish in the lead petrol concentration in the ambient air.  相似文献

The purpose of this report is to provide an overview of the public health implications of exposure via breast milk to cadmium, lead, and mercury for nursing infants and to provide health-based guidance. Daily intakes were calculated and compared with guidance values used for public health assessments at hazardous waste sites. Cadmium, lead, and mercury under normal conditions are found in breast milk at concentration ranges of < 1 microgram/L, 2-5 micrograms/L, and 1.4-1.7 micrograms/L, respectively. Women exposed environmentally or occupationally can have higher levels in their breast milk. Concentrations of about 5 micrograms/L (cadmium), 20 micrograms/L (lead), and 3.5 micrograms/L (mercury) appear to be adequate screening levels. Many factors affect both the distribution of cadmium, lead, and mercury in breast milk and the health consequences to an infant. It is not clear what additional impact low-level exposure via breast milk may have on an infant born with a body burden to one of these metals. There is sufficient evidence to make the case that contaminated breast milk is a source of potential risk to infants in certain populations. Prevention strategies that include behavior modification and proper nutrition should be communicated to women at risk. Identification and elimination of exposure pathways and a critical analysis of the benefits of breast feeding versus heavy metal exposure are needed on a site-specific or individual basis. Research is required to better understand the impact of low-level exposure to heavy metals via breast milk. Breastfeeding should be encouraged under most circumstances.  相似文献

In the framework of the system of monitoring the environmental impact on population health, the concentration of lead, cadmium and selenium in blood and cadmium in urine was measured in adults (n = 670), children (n = 599) and umbilical blood (n = 549) using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Furthermore, cytogenetic analysis of peripheral lymphocytes in all population groups under study was investigated. The median blood Pb level for the overall group of adults (47.8 micrograms/l, i.e. 0.23 mumol/1) was significantly higher in men (51.5 micrograms/l, i.e. 0.25 mumol/l). Smoking significantly influenced the blood Pb level in women. The 90th percentile in no group exceeded the value of 100 micrograms/l (0.48 mumol/l). The median blood Cd level in adults (0.9 microgram/l, i.e. 0.008 mumol/l) depends on smoking habit (1.25 micrograms/l, i.e. 0.01 mumol/l). The median urine Cd level was 0.585 microgram/g creatinine (0.59 mumol/mole creatinine) in adults and 0.37 microgram/g creatinine (0.37 mumol/mole creatinine) in children. The median blood Se level (53.5 micrograms/l, i.e. 0.68 mumol/l) was found to be higher in the group of non-smokers (57.5 micrograms/l, i.e 0.73 mumol/l). Lead and selenium level were significantly lower in the umbilical blood. Cytogenetic analysis results showed age-dependent average percentages of aberrant cells: 1.1% in umbilical blood, 1.27% in children and 1.71 in adults in line with the reference values for the Czech population.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate environmental lead exposure in the general Taiwanese population. A total of 8828 Taiwanese adults selected by a multistage sampling method were investigated. Characteristics of the participants were ascertained by questionnaire and 10 ml venous blood was drawn by public health nurses. The blood specimens were distributed to six laboratories for blood lead level (BLL) measurement. A quality control program was applied during the analysis of the BLLs in order to improve precision and accuracy. The arithmetic mean BLL of the 8828 Taiwanese adults was 7.70 +/- 5.23 micrograms/dl, with a maximal level of 69.1 micrograms/dl. The median was 6.5 micrograms/dl and the 90th percentile was 14.0 micrograms/dl. After logarithmic transformation, the geometric mean was 1.84 +/- 0.67 microgram/dl. This study also found that elevated BLLs were associated with certain personal characteristics, i.e., gender, ethnic group, and education level; life-style factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, Chinese herbal drug consumption, milk consumption, and sources of drinking water; residential location, i.e., level of urbanization; and occupational history of lead exposure. However, age, floor level of residence, distance from house to road, and betel nut consumption were not associated with elevated BLLs. These results showed that BLLs in the Taiwanese population were not higher than those in developed and developing countries. Most of the influencing factors were also found in other studies; however, local factors such as ethnic group, Chinese herbal drug consumption, and sources of drinking water are important considerations in Taiwan when examining ways to prevent overexposure to lead in the general population.  相似文献

5-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is the first intermediate substrate in the heme synthetic pathway and is the substrate of aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD, porphobilinogen synthase). Because lead effectively inhibits ALAD activity, resulting in accumulation of ALA in urine and blood, urinary ALA (ALAU) has been used as a biomarker for lead exposure or early biologic effect of lead. Intraindividual variation in urinary excretion of ALA requires the use of 24-hour urine samples or adjustment of single urine samples by other normalizing variables, such as urinary creatinine concentration. Previous studies of ALAU concentration have used various adjustment methods; however, few have compared creatinine-adjusted ALAU concentration with ALA concentration in plasma (ALAP) from subjects with low (< 30 micrograms/dL) to moderate (< 60 micrograms/dL) levels of blood lead. To determine if creatinine-adjusted ALAU is associated with ALAP, we measured ALAU, ALAP, and urinary creatinine in 65 Korean lead workers with blood lead concentrations in the range of 14-60 micrograms/dL. ALAU, ALAU/creatinine, or ALAU/log creatinine all correlated with ALAP. However, ALAU/creatinine correlated more closely with ALAP based on Spearman's r (rs = 0.40, P, = 0.0009), supporting the use of ALA/creatinine in single urine samples as a surrogate for ALAP.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine and compare lead concentrations in breast milk between urban and rural women. Colostrum from 51 women living in the city of Thessaloniki (exposed to increased air lead concentration, 0.54 micrograms/m3) and from 40 women living in rural areas (exposed to significantly lower air lead concentrations) was analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry. Urban women showed slightly higher lead concentrations (mean +/- SD: 0.090 +/- 0.029 micrograms/ml) than rural women (mean +/- SD: 0.084 +/- 0.024 micrograms/ml). This difference was not statistically significant. These results suggest that the lead content of human milk is not influenced by the concentrations of this environmental pollutant in the air.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: No current data is available on plumbism in Morocco. We conducted this work to evaluate blood lead levels in inhabitants of the Rabat region. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 385 subjects, 300 men and 85 women, age range 18-55 years, who were volunteer blood donors at the Rabat blood bank. All subjects responded to a short questionnaire concerning type of lodging cigarette smoking, occupation. Blood lead levels were assayed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICPMS). RESULTS: Mean blood lead levels for all subjects was 86.9 +/- 42.1 micrograms/l (92.9 +/- 51.7 micrograms/l for men and 80.9 +/- 32.6 micrograms/l for women). Blood lead levels increased more rapidly with age in women than in men. Levels in subjects who lived in residential urban areas were lower than those living in the old Arab center. Levels were higher in smokers than in non-smokers and in subjects with an employment than in those without. CONCLUSION: Mean blood lead levels in the Rabat region are similar to those currently observed in other countries where this same type of study has been conducted. Similar factors are associated with high mean blood lead levels.  相似文献

Survey of lead exposure around a closed lead smelter   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that elevated lead in soil is positively correlated with blood lead (BPb) levels in children in an urban population surrounding a closed lead smelter, a US Environmental Protection Agency Superfund clean-up site was surveyed. METHOD: A total of 827 volunteers including 490 children under 6 years of age participated. A questionnaire was administered. Blood lead was determined as was lead content of samples of house dust, soil, paint, and water of the participants' homes. RESULTS: The arithmetic mean venous BPb in 490 children between 6 and 72 months of age was 6.9 micrograms/dL (0.33 mumol/L) range 0.7 to 40.2 micrograms/dL (0.03 to 1.94 mumol/L). The BPb of 78 (16%) children in this group was > or = 10 micrograms/dL (0.48 mumol/L). Based on multiple regression modeling, lead in house dust accounted for 18% of the variance in BPb. Lead in paint together with the condition of the house were the main contributors to the dust lead variance (26%) with soil lead accounting for an additional 6%. Lead in paint alone accounted for 3% of the BPb variance. Lead in paint together with the condition of the house accounted for 12% of BPb variance, and lead in soil accounted for an additional 3%. Factors other than environmental lead such as education of parents, household income, and behavior were associated with BPb levels. CONCLUSIONS: The mean BPb in children was below the present level of concern of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Children with BPb of > or = 10 micrograms/L (0.48 mumol/L) tended to live in poorly maintained older houses. Based on these findings lead in soil and paint in well-maintained homes contributed little to the lead exposure of children.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: In response to requests by parents in Managua, Nicaragua, whose neighborhood borders a battery factory, 97 children were tested for blood lead, as were 30 children in a neighborhood without an obvious source of environmental lead. METHODS: Venous blood was examined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Educational workshops were conducted. RESULTS: Mean blood lead levels were 17.21 +/- 9.92 micrograms/dL in the index children and 7.40 +/- 5.37 micrograms/dL in the controls (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Children living near the battery factory are at increased risk of lead poisoning. The parents were able to petition the government to control the factory emissions and to improve appropriate health services. The factory is now closed.  相似文献

Self-reported reproductive histories of male employees of a lead-zinc smelter were related to pre-conception measures of lead exposure to examine associations between paternal occupational lead exposure and adverse pregnancy outcome. The participants reported 2,021 pregnancies which resulted in 1,684 normal live births, 12 stillbirths, 30 birth defects, 203 spontaneous abortions, and 92 "other" outcomes. Birth defects and stillbirths were combined for the analysis. The risk of a stillbirth or birth defect was elevated for pre-conception employment in a high-lead-exposure compared with a low-lead-exposure job (odds ratio = 2.7, 95% confidence interval = 0.7, 9.6). A similar risk was found for pre-conception blood lead levels of 25-39 μg/dL and >/= 40 μg/dL when compared with blood lead levels of < 25 μg/dL (OR = 2.9, 95% CI = 0.6, 13.3, and OR = 2.5, 95% CI = 0.5, 11.6, respectively). No association was found between pre-conception lead exposure and spontaneous abortion. A relatively low response rate to the questionnaire and potentially erroneous reporting of reproductive outcomes by male workers are limitations of the study.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: Severe transient hypothyroxinemia in premature infants is associated with cerebral palsy and mental retardation: this study assessed its prevalence in very premature infants. METHODS: Congenital hypothyroidism screening programs in three states provided thyroxine values for 919 newborn infants younger than 29 weeks who were enrolled in a multicenter study. RESULTS: Thyroxine values were lower than 4.0 micrograms/dL in 21% of survivors and increased each week by 0.6 microgram/dL (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.4, 0.7). At tests done 1 to 2 days after birth, levels were 2.5 micrograms/dL higher (95% CI = 1.8, 3.3) than at tests done at 8 to 14 days. In New York, levels were 1.0 microgram/dL higher (95% CI = 0.3, 1.6) than elsewhere. The levels of infants who died were 1.3 micrograms/dL lower (95% CI = 0.6, 2.0) than those of survivors. CONCLUSIONS: Severe transient hypothyroxinemia is common in very premature infants and deserves further study.  相似文献

Lead and cadmium contents were determined in nationally representative samples of low-fat milk, cheese and eggs consumed in Finland. Nationally representative samples of milk and cheese were collected from dairies. Egg samples were collected from the major distributors. Samples of imported cheese and egg products collected in surveillance studies were analysed, together with domestic samples. Lead and cadmium were determined by GFAAS after wet digestion in conc. HNO3. In lead determinations of milk and cheese platinum was employed as the matrix modifier and NH4H2PO4 was employed for the lead determinations of eggs and in all cadmium determinations. Mean lead content was 1.7 micrograms/kg in milk, 17 micrograms/kg in Finnish cheese, 17-60 micrograms/kg in imported cheese, 1 microgram/kg in eggs and 6-72 micrograms/kg in imported dry egg products. Although Finnish consumption in milk, cheese and eggs is high the dietary intake of lead and cadmium from these sources is very low compared with the tolerance limits.  相似文献

The effect of anaesthetics on the dynamic heterogeneity of lipid membranes   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
A randomized multicenter study was performed in order to investigate the acceptance of a low-dose OC (30 micrograms of ethinyloestradiol and 150 micrograms of desogestrel), using a 9 weeks on and 1 week off schedule (prolonged regimen, n = 198), compared to a traditional 3 weeks on, 1 week off schedule (standard regimen, n = 96). Haemoglobin and blood pressure remained the same in both groups during the study. No significant differences were found in body weight changes between the two groups. There was significantly more breakthrough bleeding and spotting in the group with prolonged regimen than in the group with standard regimen, but both breakthrough bleeding and spotting decreased during the trial. Irregular bleeding was significantly less in women who were already using OC, compared to "new starters." No serious side effects occurred. Significantly more women stopped the trial because of bleeding problems in the group with prolonged regimen, while there were significantly more women who stopped the trial because of headache in the group with standard regimen. After completing 12 months, or after premature withdrawal from the study, each women completed a questionnaire. Sixty-three per cent of the women preferred the studied alternative and twenty-six per cent preferred the traditional OC.  相似文献

Lead contamination is now a leading public health problem in Mexico. However, there are few data on the lead content of various environmental sources, and little is known about the contribution of these sources to the total lead exposure in the population of children residing in Mexico City. We conducted a cross-sectional study in a random sample of 200 children younger than 5 years of age who lived in one of two areas of Mexico City. Environmental samples of floor, window, and street dust, paint, soil, water, and glazed ceramics were obtained from the participants' households, as well as blood samples and dirt from the hands of the children. Blood lead levels ranged from 1 to 31 micrograms/dl with a mean of 9.9 micrograms/dl (SD 5.8 micrograms/dl). Forty-four percent of the children 18 months of age or older had blood lead levels exceeding 10 micrograms/dl. The lead content of environmental samples was low, except in glazed ceramic. The major predictors of blood lead levels were the lead content of the glazed ceramics used to prepare children's food, exposure to airborne lead due to vehicular emission, and the lead content of the dirt from the children's hands. We conclude that the major sources of lead exposure in Mexico City could be controlled by adequate public health programs to reinforce the use of unleaded gasoline and to encourage production and use of unleaded cookware instead of lead-glazed ceramics.  相似文献

To clarify lead exposure and factors relevant to it, an occupational health survey and air lead-concentration survey were conducted among 425 workers in the ceramics industry in the Seto region in Aichi Prefecture. As for biological monitoring, blood lead level was measured according to sex, job, product, factory size and duration of lead exposure. The following major findings were obtained in the present analysis. Workers making dolomite novelties showed higher blood lead levels than those making porcelain novelties, semi-porcelain novelties and tableware. The difference in blood lead level by job was statistically significant, but not that by factory size. In males, the highest blood lead level was found for spray painting work (28.7 micrograms/dl), followed by glazing work (28.0 micrograms/dl), kiln work (23.3 micrograms/dl) and painting work (22.3 micrograms/dl). In females, the blood lead level for painting work (13.5 micrograms/dl) was lower than those for glazing work (26.1 micrograms/dl) and kiln work (31.4 micrograms/dl). The blood lead level was significantly increased with the number of years of lead exposure in females (painting work). It was coincidentally clarified that the environmental lead concentration varied according to the job in which workers were engaged. As protective measures against lead exposure for workers in the ceramics industry, the development of nonlead paint and glaze and the introduction of more effective dust collectors at the workplace should be established.  相似文献

Transplacental passage of fluorides was studied in 25 randomly selected neonates. Blood samples collected simultaneously from the mother and the umbilical cord showed that average fluoride concentration in the cord blood was 60% of that in mother's blood. When concentration in the mother's blood exceeded 0.4 ppm, the placenta acted as a selective barrier.  相似文献
