“Usability” is a construct conceived by the human–computer interaction (HCI) community to denote a desired quality of interactive systems and products. Despite its prominence and intensive use in HCI research, the usefulness of the usability construct to HCI theories and to our understanding of HCI has been meager. In this article I propose and discuss two reasons for this state of affairs. The first is that usability is an umbrella construct. Umbrella constructs are prevalent in scientific fields that are broad, diverse, and lack a unifying research paradigm. Accordingly, umbrella constructs, such as usability, tend to be vague and loose, characteristics that challenge our ability to accumulate and communicate knowledge and to capture real-world phenomena. The second reason involves the nature of the relations between the usability construct and its measures, a topic rarely discussed in HCI research. There appears to be a mismatch between how the HCI community has (implicitly) conceptualized these relations and how it has empirically examined them. The relations have been conceptualized according to a formative measurement model but have mostly been tested according to a reflective measurement model. The trouble is that representing the usability construct by the reflective model appears inappropriate, and representing it by the formative model involves considerable difficulties. Possible ways of addressing these issues are discussed, each with its advantages and drawbacks. I conclude that for scientific research on this subject to progress, the usability construct ought to be unbundled and replaced by well-defined constructs. The issues discussed in this article are relevant to other HCI umbrella concepts and constructs such as user experience.  相似文献

We propose a simple extension of the well-known Riemann solver of Osher and Solomon (Math. Comput. 38:339?C374, 1982) to a certain class of hyperbolic systems in non-conservative form, in particular to shallow-water-type and multi-phase flow models. To this end we apply the formalism of path-conservative schemes introduced by Parés (SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 44:300?C321, 2006) and Castro et al. (Math. Comput. 75:1103?C1134, 2006). For the sake of generality and simplicity, we suggest to compute the inherent path integral numerically using a Gaussian quadrature rule of sufficient accuracy. Published path-conservative schemes to date are based on either the Roe upwind method or on centered approaches. In comparison to these, the proposed new path-conservative Osher-type scheme has several advantages. First, it does not need an entropy fix, in contrast to Roe-type path-conservative schemes. Second, our proposed non-conservative Osher scheme is very simple to implement and nonetheless constitutes a complete Riemann solver in the sense that it attributes a different numerical viscosity to each characteristic field present in the relevant Riemann problem; this is in contrast to centered methods or incomplete Riemann solvers that usually neglect intermediate characteristic fields, hence leading to excessive numerical diffusion. Finally, the interface jump term is differentiable with respect to its arguments, which is useful for steady-state computations in implicit schemes. We also indicate how to extend the method to general unstructured meshes in multiple space dimensions. We show applications of the first order version of the proposed path-conservative Osher-type scheme to the shallow water equations with variable bottom topography and to the two-fluid debris flow model of Pitman & Le. Then, we apply the higher-order multi-dimensional version of the method to the Baer?CNunziato model of compressible multi-phase flow. Journal hijacking, which refers to the attempted brand takeover of a journal by a third party, is a nascent threat confronting the information systems (IS) community, as evidenced by cybercriminals having established an online presence, masquerading as the Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems (SJIS). The SJIS hijacking damages the journal's reputation, leads to payment and publication scams, involves identity theft among unsuspecting IS researchers, and results in tarnished author reputations. Beyond SJIS, journal hijacking presents a threat, not only to the IS community, but also to science and academic integrity in general if researchers and readers cannot distinguish between fake publications by hijacked journals and real publications by legitimate journals. In this opinion article, we relate the story of the SJIS hijacking from the victims' perspectives. We describe its many aspects, draw attention to the key factors that contribute to the problem, and offer our perspectives on different response strategies in the absence of simple solutions. We hope to create awareness about the problem and stimulate a discussion in the IS community, not least in the face of digital innovations, such as ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence technologies that may inadvertently support paper mills and the production of fake research results.  相似文献

The harbingers of ultralarge systems are indeed emerging, although their elements seem contradictory to the "ultralarge" concept. ULS design will have to move beyond computer science and electrical and electronics engineering-based methodologies to include building blocks from seven major research areas: human interaction; computational emergence; design; computational engineering; adaptive system infrastructure; adaptable and predictable system quality; and policy, acquisition, and management. We need to integrate these more novel approaches with the tools and techniques of traditional software engineering, especially with regard to formal methods and to dealing with predictability and uncertainty in high-integrity software systems. Our view is not so much that we are 'redefining' software engineering but rather that we're looking to extend established software engineering tools and techniques in novel and useful ways.  相似文献

This paper mainly analyzes the algorithms and technology of congestion avoiding/controlling of active queue management that is applicable to the network processor, and discusses their performance criteria and technology features thoroughly. Then it proposes the method to protect and optimize TCP bandwidth by adopting several measures to the Internet touters, for example, active queue management, fair queue management, and dropping the packets. As a result, the danger of congestion collapse is decreased in a certain extent. Bioinformatics is dominated by online databases and sophisticated web‐accessible tools. As such, it is ideally placed to benefit from the rapid, purpose specific combination of services achievable via web mashups. The recent introduction of a number of sophisticated frameworks has greatly simplified the mashup creation process, making them accessible to scientists with limited programming expertise. In this paper we investigate the feasibility of mashups as a new approach to bioinformatic experimentation, focusing on an exploratory niche between interactive web usage and robust workflows, and attempting to identify the range of computations for which mashups may be employed. This article's objectives are to analyze the trends related to knowledge management process in small and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) and to compare these findings with the conclusions of other research studies designed for SMEs and to examine the level of formality in knowledge management processes according to the size of enterprise. As well, to propose a model suited to the characteristics of the small business. The information is collected from 22 Basque Country SMEs grouped into industrial clusters, through a survey that is conducted to identify the use of practices related to knowledge management. Results show that informal practices figure prominently in the day to day of the SME and that the knowledge management process is not standardized but that is performed by the collaborative work between people, among others. Besides, the size of the SME acts as a factor in regard to the level of formality in knowledge management process. This study helps SME managers understand where the organizational knowledge is found within organizations and, consequently, to not neglect the importance of people in keeping competitiveness high. The article provides new information on how firms located in a particular region of Spain perform in relation to knowledge management, and it could be considered a sort of benchmarking practice on the behavior of SME in managing knowledge, which will be useful for the organization when taking management decisions.  相似文献

This article is devoted to the numerical solution of the inviscid two-layer shallow water system. This system may lose the hyperbolic character when the shear between the layer is big enough. This loss of hyperbolicity is related to the appearance of shear instabilities that leads, in real flows, to intense mixing of the two layers that the model is not able to simulate. The strategy here is to add some extra friction terms, which are supposed to parameterize the loss of mechanical energy due to mixing, to get rid of this difficulty. The main goal is to introduce a technique allowing one to add locally and automatically an ??optimal?? amount of shear stress to make the flow to remain in the hyperbolicity region. To do this, first an easy criterium to check the hyperbolicity of the system for a given state is proposed and checked. Next, we introduce a predictor/corrector strategy. In the predictor stage, a numerical scheme is applied to the system without extra friction. In the second stage, a discrete semi-implicit linear friction law is applied at any cell in which the predicted states are not in the hyperbolicity region. The coefficient of this law is calculated so that the predicted states are driven to the boundary of the hyperbolicity region according to the proposed criterium. The numerical scheme to be used at the first stage has to be able to advance in time in presence of complex eigenvalues: we propose here a family of path-conservative numerical scheme having this property. Finally, some numerical tests have been performed to assess the efficiency of the proposed strategy.  相似文献

Since the state of hybrid systems is determined by interacting continuous and discrete dynamics,the state estimation of hybrid systems becomes a challenging problem.It is more com- plicated when the discrete mode transition information is not available,and the modes of hybrid systems are nonlinear stochastic dynamic systems.To address this problem,this paper proposes a novel hybrid strong tracking filter (HSTF) for state estimation of a class of hybrid nonlinear stochas- tic systems with unknown mode transition,the method for designing HSTF is presented.The HSTF can estimate the continuous state and discrete mode accurately with unknown mode transition in- formation,and the estimation of hybrid states is robust against the initial state.Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.  相似文献

Large data has been accumulating in all aspects of our lives for quite some time. Advances in sensor technology, the Internet, wireless communication, and inexpensive memory have all contributed to an explosion of “Big Data”. System of Systems (SoS) integrate independently operating, non-homogeneous systems to achieve a higher goal than the sum of the parts. Today’s SoS are also contributing to the existence of unmanageable “Big Data”. Recent efforts have developed a promising approach, called “Data Analytics”, which uses statistical and computational intelligence (CI) tools such as principal component analysis (PCA), clustering, fuzzy logic, neuro-computing, evolutionary computation (such as genetic algorithms), Bayesian networks, etc. to reduce the size of “Big Data” to a manageable size and apply these tools to (a) extract information, (b) build a knowledge base using the derived data, and (c) eventually develop a non-parametric model for the “Big Data”. This paper demonstrates how to construct a bridge between SoS and Data Analytics to develop reliable models for such systems. The subject material for this demonstration is using data analytics to generate a model to forecast produced photovoltaic energy to assist in the optimization of a micro grid SoS. Tools like fuzzy interference, neural networks, PCA, and genetic algorithms are used.  相似文献
