Chemical treatment processes such as ozonation have mostly been considered as an efficient way for bio-solids minimization. The improvement of sludge dewatering was more a welcoming side-effect in these sequential processes. However, sometimes the loaded ozone dose to the sludge has a negative effect on dewaterability. This work address the most important issue found — the effect of ozone on sludge dewaterability in a single ozonation processes as well as in a sequential ozonation biological processes. It was found that the maximum sludge dewaterability was achieved with an ozone dose of 0.05 gO3/gTSS. This value was found to be less than the required ozone dosage that leads to sludge disintegration. However, it was observed that the sequential ozone and aerobic treatment allows further strong improvement of dewatering efficiencies.  相似文献

The applicability of sludge ozonation on wastewater treatment processes was investigated to reduce the amount of excess sludge without losing phosphorus removal efficiency. Solubilization degree per ozone consumption for general sludge was in the range from 2.4 to 5.8 gSS/O3 and from 4.1 to 7.7 gCOD/gO3. Around 80 to 90% of solubilized organics was biodegradable at a solubilization degree of 0.3. Based on the experimental results, a lab-scale plant with sludge ozonation and phosphorus crystallization was constructed to investigate the treatment performance. Amount of excess sludge was reduced by 93% with almost complete removal of soluble BOD and phosphorus removal efficiency of more than 80%. The percentage of the effluent CODCr discharge increased from 10% to 14–17% after installing ozonation and crystallization because of the formation of non-biodegradable organic substances in ozonation process. Energy consumption of the innovative advanced process is comparable or can be even smaller than that of the conventional anaerobic/oxic (A/O) process in spite of the installation of ozonation and crystallization.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to improve the anaerobic biodegradability of waste-activated sludge by using ozonation. The effect of different ozone doses was assessed in terms of biogas production, maximum biogas production rate, and concentration of amino acids and long-chain fatty acids in the waste-activated sludge. Four different doses were used: 0.043 gO3 gTSS?1, 0.063 gO3 gTSS?1, 0.080 gO3 gTSS?1, and 0.100 gO3 gTSS?1. The lower doses resulted in biogas production increases and a higher maximum biogas production rate in the anaerobic digestion of waste-activated sludge, while the contrary occurred at higher doses. The amino acids and long-chain fatty acids concentrations decreased when the ozone dose increased. The correlation with the ozone dose was nonlinear for amino acids and linear for long-chain fatty acids. The reaction products of long-chain fatty acids (aldehydes) are proposed as the cause of inhibition observed in the anaerobic digestion of waste-activated sludge treated with higher ozone doses.  相似文献

A sludge ozonation process with lab-scale anaerobic/oxic (A/O) system was used to investigate the utilization of the ozonized sludge (OS) supernatant as extra carbon source for denitrification. The optimal ozone dose for the sludge ozonation was 0.2 gO3/gSS. The concentrations of SCOD, BOD, NH3-N and TN in the supernatant increased respectively at this ozone dose. In the meantime, the sludge was significantly reduced. The OS supernatant had negative effect on nitrification because of low pH and alkalinity. After alkalinity adjustment, the A/O with the OS supernatant as the extra carbon source achieved a nitrogen removal rate of 78%, which was very close to the control experiment using glucose (79%).  相似文献

The current study focused on treatment of phenolic wastewater using an integrated process – dosing of ozone directly to activated sludge. The main goal was to analyze the effect of ozonation on viability of activated sludge in different systems – activated sludge in distilled water and activated sludge in wastewater. Two viability detection methods, oxygen uptake (OUR) rate and adenosine-5'-triphosphate measurement (ATP), were compared. The linear correlation between ATP and OUR measurements in studied range was found to be good (r2 = 0.90). In case of ozonation of activated sludge in wastewater, ozone doses up to 42 mgO3·gMLVSS?1 did not influence the viability of sludge. In addition, contrary to ozonation of sludge in distilled water, soluble COD was reduced by 15.6% (at ozone dose of 42 mgO3·gMLVSS?1).  相似文献

This work deals with the ozonation of a chemical industry wastewater, which contains many complex organic pollutants and presents high chloride content and toxicity. Batch experiments were carried out until ozone absorption reached 0.1 to 3 gO3/L. Ozonation promoted low to moderate levels of organic matter removal even when high ozone doses were applied. Organic matter removal tended to decrease when chloride content increased. Toxicity removal increased with the ozone dose up to 0.5 gO3/L. High or complete toxicity removal was attained after ozonation of the wastewater samples. Ozonation was also very effective in removing the polycyclic aromatic compounds found in the wastewater.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In the present study, the fate of trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) during ozonation of ultrapurified water and wastewater effluent was investigated. In experiments conducted in phosphate buffered ultrapurified water, O3 alone in excess was inefficient to oxidize Cr(III) (only about 10–15% of total Cr(III) content), while in presence of the secondary oxidant, OH radical, almost all Cr(III) was oxidized to hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). In a wastewater effluent, spiked with Cr(III), only about 10–20% of Cr(III) was oxidized with specific ozone doses in the range 0.15–1.5 gO3/gDOC, although O3 and OH radical were both available for reaction. Cr(VI) formation was monitored in parallel with the abatement of some common micropollutants, reacting with differing apparent second-order rate constants with ozone, decreasing in the order carbamazepine>> benzotriazole> atrazine> p-chlorobenzoic acid (pCBA). Carbamazepine and benzotriazole were abated to >80% for specific O3 doses of 0.3 gO3/gDOC and 0.8 gO3/gDOC, respectively. The more ozone-resistant compounds (atrazine and pCBA) required a specific ozone dose of about 1.25 gO3/gDOC for the same relative abatement. At this specific ozone dose (i.e., 1.25 gO3/gDOC), only about 20% of Cr(III) was oxidized to Cr(VI), whereas only 10% of Cr(III) was oxidized to Cr(VI) at a more realistic specific ozone dose for enhanced wastewater treatment for micropollutant abatement (0.5 gO3/gDOC). Therefore, for typical Cr(III) levels in municipal wastewaters, effluent ozonation only leads to toxicologically insignificant Cr(VI) concentrations.  相似文献

Ozonation of a natural tannin (NT; CODo?=?1195 mg/L; TOCo?=?342 mg/L; BOD5,o?=?86 mg/L) and a synthetic tannin ST; CODo?=?465 mg/L; TOCo?=?55 mg/L; BOD5,o?=?6 mg/L) being frequently applied in the polyamide dyeing process was investigated. Synthetic wastewater samples containing these tannins individually were prepared and subjected to ozonation at varying ozone doses (625– 1250 mgO3/L wastewater), at pH?=?3.5 (the application pH of tannins) and pH?=?7.0 at an ozone dose of 1125 mgO3/L wastewater. The collective environmental parameters COD, TOC, BOD5, UV254 and UV280 (UV absorbance at 254 nm and 280 nm, representing aromatic and unsaturated moieties, respectively) were followed during ozonation. Changes in the biodegradability of the tannins were evaluated in terms of BOD5 measurements conducted before and after ozonation. In addition, activated sludge inhibition tests employing heterotrophic biomass were run to elucidate the inhibitory effect of raw and ozonated textile tannins towards activated sludge biomass. Partial oxidation (45% COD removal at an ozone dose of 750 mg O3/L wastewater and pH?=?3.5) of ST was sufficient to achieve elimination of its inhibitory effect towards heterotrophic biomass and acceptable biodegradability improvement, whereas the inhibitory effect and biodegradability of NT could not be reduced via ozonation under the same reaction conditions.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Ozone is applied in wastewater treatment for effluent water quality improvement (post‐ozonation) as well as for excess sludge reduction (in the recirculation line). There is some evidence that ozone dosed directly to aerobic biooxidation (ABO) process enhances degradation of recalcitrant compounds into intermediates, following their biodegradation in the same reactor. However, no information regarding the influence of ozone on sludge yield in this system was found. Therefore, the current work aimed to evaluate the effect of ozone on the sludge yield when ozone is dosed directly to the ABO process. In addition, batch and continuous treatment schemes for phenolic wastewater treatment are compared. RESULTS: The results revealed that an optimal ozone dose of ~30 mgO3 L?1 day?1 reduced the sludge yield by ~50%, while effluent water quality in terms of total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD), compared with a conventional ABO process, was improved by 35.5 ± 3.6%. Slight improvement in soluble COD removal at the same ozone dose was also detected. The toxicity of effluent water was reduced as the ozone dose was increased. CONCLUSIONS: In an integrated ozonation‐ABO process it is possible to simultaneously reduce sludge yield and to improve effluent water quality, as COD and toxicity are reduced. The study investigates the effect of sludge ozonation on solid matter species, disintegration properties, sludge components, and solubilization characteristics under different operating conditions. Ozonation of surplus activated sludge samples taken from the secondary settling tank of a domestic wastewater treatment plant indicates that soluble nitrogen, phosphorus and COD concentrations proliferate as a consequence of extending the ozone feeding time. A steady increase both in soluble nitrogen concentration and ratio of organic phosphorus to soluble phosphorus is observed through ozonation where specific ozone doses range between 4 and 11 mg O3/g SS. Combined treatment of chemical oxidation and aerobic biodegradation to surplus activated sludge is also applied to improve the biodegradability of organic matter by partial chemical oxidative pretreatment with as little specific ozone consumption as possible. The partial oxidation by integrated ozonation is operated as a pre-oxidation step for the subsequent biological degradation, due to the fact that the competition with biological degradation in removing biodegradable organic compounds is avoided and most probably a more biodegradable sludge composition is obtained by means of ozonation. Combined treatment of chemical oxidation and aerobic biodegradation conducted to scrutinize the synergic effect of the coupled treatment system reveals that TS and COD removal efficiencies of ozonated sludge samples cannot be improved beyond the third aerobic biodegradation step.  相似文献

The purpose of this research was the investigation of the ozonation of sludge as a method to improve anaerobic digestion performance in a chemically enhanced primary treatment facility. Batch tests were conducted to evaluate the effect of ozonation on the physicochemical characteristics of both primary and digested sludge. Then, the performance of semi-continuous anaerobic digesters in combination with ozone treatment was investigated (pre-ozonation and post-ozonation). Ozonation of primary sludge did not increase the soluble COD nor the biodegradable COD, but resulted in the mineralization of a fraction of the organic matter into CO2. However, the ozonation of anaerobic digested sludge resulted in an increase in soluble COD and biodegradable COD and in a small level of mineralization at the dose of 90 mg O3/g COD. Pre-ozonation of primary sludge was not effective in enhancing the performance of the anaerobic digester. The coupling of ozonation and anaerobic digestion by means of the post-ozonation of digested sludge was found to be effective in improving methane production (+16%), for COD removal efficiency and for the dewaterability of anaerobic digesters compared to the control digester.  相似文献

The treatment of a segregated textile wastewater containing reactive dyes was investigated in two continuous‐flow process trains using ozonation and biological processes. The degree of decolorization and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal achieved by ozonation followed by aerobic treatment (two‐stage) was compared with that found when an anaerobic and aerobic pretreatment was added (four‐stage). Although the biological pretreatment reduced color by ~70%, similar amounts of ozone were required in both trains to achieve high degrees of overall removal of color and DOC. In both trains, ozonation increased biodegradability in the following aerobic reactor, however, in order to reach ~80% overall DOC removal, a specific ozone absorption (A*) of ~6 gO3 gDOCo?1 was required and >50% of the DOC was mineralized in the ozone reactor. A comparison of cost estimates based on investment and operating costs for the process alternatives showed that a four‐stage train would reduce costs only if it enabled a decrease in A* to less than 2 gO3 gDOCo?1. Difficulties in comparing treatment processes for segregated vs full‐stream wastewaters are discussed. Copyright © 2003 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Pre-ozonation is often used to enhance the biodegradability of recalcitrant compounds prior to biological treatment of wastewater. A usual shortcoming of such an approach is wasting ozone on other compounds that are already biodegradable. This research followed a groundbreaking approach of degrading a recalcitrant substance with ozone during biological treatment. Two parallel bench-top activated sludge processes were fed a synthetic wastewater containing typical biodegradable substances and also methylene blue at 5 mg/L. Ozone was applied continuously and directly into one of the activated sludge units at 17 mg/L based on inflow rate. The methylene blue was removed by 95%?in the ozonated process compared with just 40%?removal in the non-ozonated control. The removal in the activated sludge without ozonation was demonstrated to be mainly due to biosorption. The ozone oxidation reaction by-products were analyzed using GC-MS on volatile substances collected in the headspace above ozonated samples of methylene blue and most found to be biodegradable. These by-products are expected to be degraded and assimilated in the same process unit together with the other biodegradables in the feed stream by the activated sludge process. The reaction rate with organic substances depleted the dissolved ozone at such a rate that the inactivation of the treatment bacteria (and protozoa) was minimal, mostly affecting the filamentous bacteria. A concern that ozone, as a powerful disinfectant, could inhibit or kill the beneficial bacteria in the activated sludge process was proven to be incorrect.  相似文献

The ever-increasing amount of solid waste generated by wastewater treatment plants highlights emerging economic and environmental issues. In order to develop new processes producing less sludge, the use of ozone combined with anaerobic digestion was investigated for waste activated sludge treatment. This paper was aimed at evaluating the impact of ozone pretreatment on anaerobic digestion and particularly the enhancement of biogas production. Sludge solubilization was estimated in terms of modification of chemical oxygen demand, solids and nitrogen. Batch anaerobic digestion highlighted the enhancement of ozonated sludge biodegradability. Ozonation led to an increase in biogas production. The ozone dose of 0.15 g O3/g total solids resulted in a considerable increase in the soluble COD ratio from 4% to 37%. This ozone dose achieved the highest increase in biogas production: 2.4 times greater than without chemical pretreatment.  相似文献

The ultimate disposal of wastewater sludge has been, and continues to be, one of the most expensive problems faced by wastewater utilities in the United States. The objective of this research was to apply cell lysis and cryptic growth principles to activated sludge to study the applicability of ozonation to reduce the mass of secondary sludge. The study produced data and details for application of ozone to reduce secondary sludge production. The application of ozone reduced the mass of waste sludge by 30 to 50% depending on the ozonation rate and period.  相似文献

Properties of activated sludge during ozonation were analyzed. The structure and surface characteristics altered with the increase of ozone dosage. At low ozone dosage, the floc structure was completely dismantled. Floc fragments reformed through reflocculation at an ozone dosage greater than 0.20 g O3·g?1 mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS). Inactivation of microorganisms in the activated sludge mixture was caused by ozonation. Microbial growth decreased by up to 65% compared to the control. Simultaneously, 92.5% of nucleotide and 97.4% of protein in microbial cells of the sludge were released. Organic substance, nitrogen and phosphorus were released from the sludge during the ozonation process. The initial value of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) was 72 mg·L?1. When the ozone dosage was 0.12 g O3·g?1 MLSS, the value of SCOD rapidly reached 925 mg·L?1, increased by almost 12-fold. Simultaneously, 54.7% of MLSS was reduced. The composition of MLSS was changed, indicating that the inner water of cells and volatile organic substance decreased during the ozonation process.  相似文献

New strategies for sludge stabilization and mineralization need to be developed since the use of sludge in agriculture is debatable and sludge incineration cannot be a systematic solution. Minimization of sludge production should be preferred. In this work, the effect of ozone on activated sludge solubilization and mineralization during batch experiments is assessed by establishing carbon and ozone mass balances. After extended ozonation of the sludge, more than 90% of the particulate carbon is modified. Depending on the experimental conditions, from 15 to 50% is found in a soluble form and from 35% to 95% was mineralized. The VSS/SS ratio decreases from 86% to less than 50% illustrating the sludge mineralization. The initial rate of ozone consumption by the sludge is very high (estimated value: 30 mgO3/g VSS.min) and corresponds to high rates of carbon solubilization and mineralization. More than 50% of the carbon obtained after ozonation is found to be readily biodegradable using a short-term BOD procedure.  相似文献

This article presents a laboratory study of the ozonation of diluted cherry stillage, a high-strength wastewater. Influence of variables, kinetics, and the effects of an ozonation stage coupled with the biological treatment by activated sludge are addressed. Single activated sludge processing was shown effective to remove biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) but polyphenols were reduced to a lesser extent. On the other hand, direct wastewater ozonation did not reduce COD and total organic carbon (TOC) appreciably, and foaming problems were experienced when a high gas flow rate was applied. However, polyphenols and UV254 absorbance decreased substantially by means of ozonation. To best achieve complete cherry stillage purification, two ways of coupling ozonation with activated sludge are proposed. Ozonation prior to activated sludge is advised for high-concentration wastewater to reduce polyphenol concentration, thus removing inhibiting effects. For wastewater with low polyphenol concentration the sequence activated sludge–ozonation–activated sludge is preferred to enhance the overall process performance in terms of oxidation efficiency and sludge settling.  相似文献

Excess biological sludge, WAS, produced during activated sludge process is a growing problem for the utilities owing to the stringent regulations now imposed worldwide. One method of handling the excess sludge is to digest it, to reduce its amount and to stabilize it. Aerobic digestion is particularly suitable for nutrient treating plants as sludge should not be exposed to anaerobiosis since this will lead to release of accumulated phosphorus. A novel and patented ozone-assisted aerobic sludge digestion process (PCT/TR2010/000213) is shown to appreciably shorten the 15–30-day aerobic digestion period and the extent of solids destroyed. WAS samples were ozonated for different periods in Erlenmeyer flasks, once a day, on each of four consecutive days. Flasks were continuously aerated between ozone applications. The MLVSS, MLSS, COD and OUR parameters were measured routinely during the course of four days of digestion in order to optimize the process. As a result 22.6%, 40%, 75% and 84% MLVSS reductions were obtained at total ozone applications of 0.42, 0.64, 0.85 and 1.27 mg O3 g?1 MLSS, at the end of the fourth day. Hence, it became possible to save on contact time as well as achieving a bio-solids digestion far exceeding the standard aerobic process, which is 40–50% in 15–30 days, at the expense of a minimum of ozone dose. The developed process is deemed superior over side-stream ozonation where ozone is applied to the return activated sludge, RAS, line; in that it does not cause any reduction in active biomass amount maintained in the aeration tank. Conversely, reduction in active biomass concentration results in reduced treatment efficiency.  相似文献
