The contact interaction of an elastic punch of arbitrary cross-section and an elastic semi-space with initial (residual) stresses is studied. A general method to solve the problem is proposed. To reduce the costs related to maintenance of aircraft structures, there is the need to develop new robust, accurate and reliable damage detection methods. A possible answer to this problem is offered by newly developed non-linear acoustic/ultrasonic techniques, which monitor the non-linear elastic wave propagation behaviour introduced by damage, to detect its presence and location. In this paper, a new transient non-linear elastic wave spectroscopy (TNEWS) is presented for the detection and localization of a scattered zone (damage) in a composite plate. The TNEWS analyses the uncorrelations between two structural dynamic responses generated by two different pulse excitation amplitudes by using a time-frequency coherence function. A numerical validation of the proposed method is presented. Damage was introduced and modelled using a multi-scale material constitutive model (Preisach-Mayergoyz space). The developed technique identified in a clear manner the faulted zone, showing its robustness to locate and characterize non-linear sources in composite materials

In this paper, a power series and Fourier series approach is used to solve the governing equations of motion in an elastic axisymmetric vessel with the assumption that the fluid is incompressible and Newtonian in a laminar flow. We obtain solutions for the wave speed and attenuation coefficient, analytically where possible, and show how these differ under a number of different conditions. Viscosity is found to reduce the wave speed from that predicted by linear wave theory and the nonlinear terms to increase the wave speed in comparison to the linear solution. For vessels with a wall stiffness in the arterial range, the reduction in the wave speed due to the viscous terms is approximately 10% and the increase due to the nonlinear terms is approximately 5%. This difference between the linear and nonlinear wave speeds was found to be largely constant irrespective of the number of terms considered in the power series for the velocity profile. The linear wave speed was found to vary weakly with stiffness, whilst the nonlinear wave speed was found to vary significantly with the stiffness, especially at low values of stiffness. The 10% variation in the wave speed due to the viscous terms was found to be constant with wall stiffness whilst the 5% variation due to the nonlinear terms was found to vary with wall stiffness. The importance of the number of terms considered in the power series is discussed showing that only a relatively small number is required in the viscous case to obtain accurate results.

The multi-parameter inverse scattering problem of elastic wave equation with single frequency is investigated within Born approximation. By use of a wideband measuring scheme in which both transmitters and receivers scan over the half-space surface, the formula of the scattering field of elastic wave is derived. Four types of mode conversion of elastic wave (P→P,P→S,S→P,S→S) are separated from the scattering field. These components contain sufficient information for us to reconstruct the configurations of the density and Lamé parameters of the medium. The inverse formulas have the form of filtered back-propagation as in the acoustic diffraction tomography. Computer simulations are also obtained. This paper presents an experimental campaign aimed at understanding the limitations and capabilities of non-linear elastic wave spectroscopy (NEWS) non-destructive technique (NDT) methods in the presence of variable boundary conditions. In particular, the objective was to understand if the contact between the structures under investigation and the clamps used to hold the structures could generate non-classical non-linear effects that could affect the damage detection process by producing false-positive indications of defects presence. Two different techniques were analysed with varying degree clamping torque. The first approach evaluates the resonance frequency shift as a function of the external load amplitude, and it is called non-linear resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (NRUS). The second method used, called non-linear wave modulation spectroscopy (NWMS), monitors the generation of sidebands and harmonics when the structure is excited by a double tone external load. The results showed that the non-classical hysteretical non-linear effects were dependent on the boundary conditions, highlighted by the presence of resonance shift and harmonics and sidebands in an undamaged sample. This research shows that more work is needed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the methods and the ease of implementation in a structural health monitoring system and further research studies and methodology development are needed to discern non-classical non-linear effects generated by contacts between mating parts (clamps and sample) from that generated due to the presence of damage.

In this paper, a fluid–wall interaction model, called the elastic tube model, is introduced to investigate wave propagation in an elastic tube and the effects of different parameters. The unsteady flow was assumed to be laminar, Newtonian and incompressible, and the vessel wall to be linear-elastic, isotropic and incompressible. A fluid–wall interaction scheme is constructed using a finite element method. The results demonstrate that the elastic tube plays an important role in wave propagation. It is shown that there is a time delay between the velocity waveforms at two different locations and that the peak velocity increases while the low velocity decreases in the elastic tube model, contrary to the rigid tube model where velocity waveforms overlap each other. Compared with the elastic tube model, the increase of the wall thickness makes wave propagation faster and the time delay cannot be observed clearly, however, the velocity amplitude is reduced slightly due to the decrease of the internal radius. The fluid–wall interaction model simulates wave propagation successfully and can be extended to study other mechanical properties considering complicated geometrical and material factors.

The propagation of elastic waves is studied in a porous solid saturated with two immiscible viscous fluids. The propagation of three longitudinal waves is represented through three scalar potential functions. The lone transverse wave is presented by a vector potential function. The displacements of particles in different phases of the aggregate are defined in terms of these potential functions. It is shown that there exist three longitudinal waves and one transverse wave. The phenomena of reflection and refraction due to longitudinal and transverse waves at a plane interface between an elastic solid half-space and a porous solid half-space saturated with two immiscible viscous fluids are investigated. For the presence of viscosity in pore-fluids,the waves refracted to the porous medium attenuate in the direction normal to the interface. The ratios of the amplitudes of the reflected and refracted waves to that of the incident wave are calculated as a nonsingular system of linear algebraic equations. These amplitude ratios are used to further calculate the shares of different scattered waves in the energy of the incident wave. The modulus of the amplitude and the energy ratios with the angle of incidence are computed for a particular numerical model. The conservation of the energy across the interface is verified. The effects of variations in non-wet saturation of pores and frequencies on the energy partition are depicted graphically and discussed.

The fundamental framework of micromechanical procedure is generalized to take into account the surface/interface stress effect at the nano-scale. This framework is applied to the derivation of the effective moduli of solids containing nano-inhomogeneities in conjunction with the composite spheres assemblage model, the Mori-Tanaka method and the generalized self-consistent method. Closed-form expressions are given for the bulk and shear moduli, which are shown to be functions of the interface properties and the size of the inhomogeneities. The dependence of the elastic moduli on the size of the inhomogeneities highlights the importance of the surface/interface in analysing the deformation of nano-scale structures. The present results are applicable to analysis of the properties of nano-composites and foam structures.

We investigated the influence of elastic material compressibility on parameters of an expanding spherical stress wave. The material compressibility is represented by Poisson’s ratio, ν, in this paper. The stress wave is generated by a pressure produced inside a spherical cavity surrounded by the isotropic elastic material. The analytical closed form formulae determining the dynamic state of the mechanical parameters (displacement, particle velocity, strains, stresses, and material density) in the material have been derived. These formulae were obtained for surge pressure p(t) = p 0 = const inside the cavity. From analysis of these formulae, it is shown that the Poisson’s ratio substantially influences the course of material parameters in space and time. All parameters intensively decrease in space together with an increase of the Lagrangian coordinate, r. On the contrary, these parameters oscillate versus time around their static values. These oscillations decay in the course of time. We can mark out two ranges of parameter ν values in which vibrations of the parameters are “damped” at a different rate. Thus, Poisson’s ratio in the range below about 0.4 causes intense decay of parameter oscillations. On the other hand in the range 0.4 < ν < 0.5, i.e. in quasi-incompressible materials, the “damping” of parameter vibrations is very low. In the limiting case when ν = 0.5, i.e. in the incompressible material, “damping” vanishes, and the parameters harmonically oscillate around their static values. The abnormal behaviour of the material occurs in the range 0.4 < ν < 0.5. In this case, an insignificant increase of Poisson’s ratio causes a considerable increase of the parameter vibration amplitude and decrease of vibration “damping”.

The modulation of the optical path of the beam of a laser vibrometer in a specimen under acoustic excitation is measured at two planes, separated by a precisely known distance. The phase shift and the decrease in magnitude are used to calculate the phase velocity and attenuation, respectively. The method is demonstrated for a homogeneous specimen, and the results compare favorably with those obtained by a conventional ultrasonic technique. The method is then applied to measure specular and first diffraction-order reflection from a coplanar periodic array of particles in an elastic matrix and phase velocity spectra in a tetragonal periodic particulate composite. As expected, in a periodic composite the establishment of dispersive Floquet-type waves is observed throughout the entire periodic particulate composite.

The purpose of this research is to study the effect of voids on the surface wave propagation in a layer of a transversely isotropic thermoelastic material with voids lying over an isotropic elastic half-space. The frequency equation is derived after developing a mathematical model for welded and smooth contact boundary conditions. The dispersion curves giving the phase velocity and attenuation coefficient via wave number are plotted graphically to depict the effects of voids and anisotropy for welded contact boundary conditions. The specific loss and amplitudes of the volume fraction field, the normal stress, and the temperature change for welded contact are obtained and shown graphically for a particular model to depict the voids and anisotropy effects. Some special cases are also deduced from the present investigation.

A brief review of the literatures on the titled subject is given. A set of wave equations, taking the inertial coupling effect between soil skeleton and pore water into account, are established for saturated soils. The preliminary analysis shows that the nature of wave propagation is mainly influenced by permeability coefficient,k. There are three types of waves, two (P-and S-wave) propagating through soil skeleton and one(P-wave) through pore water. For a soil with large value ofk, compression wave velocity through pore water will be greater than that through single-phased water, and ask→∞, the former could be times as great as the latter. For a soil with extremely low permeability, the compression wave velocity could be either less or greater than that through single-phased water, depending on the rigidity of the soil passing through. Some phenomena observed from tests presented in the literature may be reasonably explained by the proposed theory herein, and thus more reliable parameters of soil could be obtained from wave velocity measurements. Further studies on this subject are still needed. This paper is a part of the dissertation of the first author for the Ph.D. degree, the second author is his advisor.

The paper deals with the plane problem of steady-state time harmonic vibrations of an infinite elastic plate resting on a water-saturated porous solid. The displacements of the plate are described by means of the linear theory of small elastic oscillations. The motion of the two-phase medium is studied within the framework of Biot's linear theory of consolidation. The main interest is focused on the investigation of properties of the Rayleigh-type waves propagating alongside of the contact surface between the plate and the porous half-space. In particular, the dependence of the phase velocity and attenuation of the waves on the plate stiffness, mass coupling coefficient, and degree of saturation of the medium is studied. Besides, for the limiting case of an infinitely thin plate, the comparison of the wave characteristics is carried out with those of the pure Rayleigh waves.

In non-classical nonlinear media, much characteristic information is contained in their dynamic elastic responses. A method combining nonlinear elastic wave spectroscopy (NEWS) with a time-reversal (TR) process is used in this numerical study, in which the presence of one defect and two defects acting with non-classical nonlinearity in an attenuating medium is simulated. Nonlinear defect behavior is introduced using a modified Preisach–Mayergoyz (PM) model. Two methods are used to determine retrofocal quality: harmonic filtering and modulated wave filtering. In the simulation, the nonlinear signal is filtered from the received continuous wave, then reversed and re-sent; a crack image can be obtained from the nonlinear signal in a lossy solid. By comparison with the actual defect, the image can reflect the distribution of one or two flaws, which show the feasibility and value of the NEWS–TR methodology for microdamage imaging of two defects. These results also show that images obtained with different harmonic and modulated frequencies can reflect the presence of defects. With increasing frequency, the crack positions obtained from the image change due to the influence of solid loss and interaction with sound waves.
