This paper focuses on the effect of heat exchanger fouling on the performance of the Stirling engine in combined heat and power (CHP) application. Fouling results from using biomass fuels and affects the heat exchanger that transfers heat into the engine. This heat exchanger is referred to as the heater. The heat exchanger that recovers heat from the flue gases is also affected by fouling. To determine the performance of the Stirling engine, a commercial Stirling analysis tool is applied together with models that have been developed for the heat transfer in the heater, regenerator and cooler of the engine. The Stirling engine model uses constant temperatures for the heat addition and rejection, with the theory of displacement engine as a basis. The fouling in the heat exchanger is taken into account by using a fouling factor that corresponds with the degradation in the total heat transfer coefficient. The Stirling engine model together with the model for heat exchanger fouling makes it possible to estimate the effect of fouling on the performance of the Stirling engine. A cost model is developed for the engine to translate changes in performance into economy in CHP operation. In the studied application, the Stirling engine is operated by the heat demand. Together with the selected control method, performance and cost models compose a tool for the simulation and optimization of the system. The use of the models to determine the optimal cleaning interval of the heat exchanger surfaces is considered.  相似文献

Heat exchangers and heat exchanger networks are extensively used for the purpose of recovering energy. In conventional flue gas heat recovery systems, the fouling by fly ashes and the related problems such as corrosion and cleaning are known to be major drawbacks. To overcome these problems, a single-riser no-distributor-fluidized-bed heat exchanger is devised and studied. Fouling and cleaning tests are performed for a uniquely designed fluidized bed-type heat exchanger to demonstrate the effect of particles on the fouling reduction and heat transfer enhancement. The tested heat exchanger model (1 m high and 54 mm internal diameter) is a gas-to-water type and composed of a main vertical tube and four auxiliary tubes through which particles circulate and transfer heat. Through the present study, the fouling on the heat transfer surface could successfully be simulated by controlling air-to-fuel ratios rather than introducing particles through an external feeder, which produced soft deposit layers with 1 to 1.5 mm thickness on the inside pipe wall. Flue gas temperature at the inlet of heat exchanger was maintained at 450°C at the gas volume rate of 0.738 to 0.768 CMM (0.0123 to 0.0128 m3/sec). From the analyses of the measured data, heat transfer performances of the heat exchanger before and after fouling and with and without particles were evaluated. Results showed that soft deposits were easily removed by introducing glass bead particles, and also heat transfer performance increased two times by the particle circulation. In addition, it was found that this type of heat exchanger had high potential to recover heat of waste gases from furnaces, boilers, and incinerators effectively and to reduce fouling related problems.  相似文献

This paper presents a method for the detection of fouling in a cross-flow heat exchanger. A numerical model is used to generate data when the heat exchanger is clean and corresponding data when fouling occurs. In a first step, the model is used to generate a long time series by simulating a clean heat exchanger. This allows the determination of a neural network model of the heat exchanger. Then, hundred sets of data are generated by simulating a fouled heat exchanger and it is checked that the simple Cusum test can be used to detect fouling without any false alarm, whatever the reference time series is.  相似文献

Fouling in crude oil preheat trains is a significant industrial problem which has restricted the application of process integration techniques such as "pinch technology" in this sector. A semiempirical fouling model for crude oil fouling developed by Panchal and co-workers allows the effects of fouling to be considered at the design stage for such networks. Application of this model at three levels--(1) design of new networks; (2) retrofitting of existing systems; and (3) identification of robust specifications for individual heat exchanger units--is discussed. The design issues are discussed using case studies illustrated by a graphical construction, the temperature field plot. Rigorous optimization of the final designs is not reported. The specification discussion describes how the crude fouling model can be incorporated into existing heat exchanger design software to identify exchanger configurations which are less likely to experience significant fouling over a range of operating conditions. This article concentrates on shell-and-tube designs, but the concepts will be applicable to other exchanger types once a suitable fouling model becomes available.  相似文献

Fouling of heat exchangers is a chronic problem in processing industries. In addition to the appropriate selection of operating conditions and exchanger geometry, there are numerous chemical and mechanical methods to mitigate fouling and to remove deposits from the heat transfer surfaces. However, all methods to reduce fouling require some understanding of the mechanisms of the deposition process and of the structure and adhesion of deposits on the heat transfer surfaces. Almost exactly 50 years ago, D. Q. Kern and his co-author, R. E. Seaton, published a paper attempting to describe the growth of fouling deposits in terms of an unsteady-state heat and mass balance for the heat transfer surface. More or less at the same time, the TEMA fouling resistances were published based on operational and anecdotal evidence of fouling for a range of heat exchanger applications. These two approaches have since formed the basis for most heat transfer fouling models and heat exchanger designs. Increased costs of energy, raw materials, and production downtime have contributed to the growing interest in heat transfer fouling. More recently, environmental legislation has put additional pressure on fouling-related CO2 emissions and disposal of cleaning chemicals. Despite these efforts, fouling of heat exchangers is still far from been understood in its whole complexity. The present paper documents the 2009 D. Q. Kern Award Lecture in which some selected aspects of fouling research to date have been presented and areas have been identified where significant research and development activities are still required.  相似文献

Multistage shell and tube evaporators are frequently used in phosphoric acid plants to increase the concentration of dilute phosphoric acid to 52–55 wt% P2O5. The concentrated phosphoric acid solution is supersaturated with respect to calcium sulfate. As a result, part of the calcium sulfate in the liquor deposits on the heat exchanger tube walls. Because the thermal conductivity of these scales is very low, thin deposits can create a significant resistance to heat transfer. Therefore, regular cleaning of heat exchangers is required, frequently at shorter than biweekly intervals. As the major costs in modern phosphoric acid plants are the cost of energy, a thorough understanding of the fouling kinetics and of the effects of various operational parameters on the behavior of calcium sulfate is required to improve operation and design of the shell and tube heat exchangers, which are extensively used. In this investigation, a large set of heat exchanger data was collected from shell and tube heat exchangers of the phosphoric acid plant of the Razi Petrochemical Complex in Iran, and the fouling deposits were analyzed with respect to appearance and composition. The overall heat transfer coefficients and fouling resistances were evaluated at different times, and a kinetic model for the crystallization fouling was developed. It is shown that the crystallization rate constant obeys an Arrhenius relationship with an activation energy of 57 kJ/mol. The average absolute error of 12.4% shows that the predictions of the suggested model are in good agreement with the original plant data.  相似文献

Fouling of oils on heat exchanger surfaces and pipelines is a common problem in a variety of industrial applications. This is because the oil deposits on the heat transfer surface causes an increase in pressure drop and a decrease in heat exchanger efficiency. In the current work, oil fouling in double pipe heat exchanger was investigated and mitigated using a surface‐active agent for the flow of a dispersion fluid containing different dispersed oil fractions in water. The effect of the dispersed oil fraction (5%vol and 10%vol) and temperature (35°C‐55°C) on the oil fouling rate was studied and discussed under turbulent flow conditions for both hot and cold fluids. Different amounts of alkylbenzene sulfonate as a surfactant were added to reduce the fouling rate under turbulent flow. It was found that the fouling thermal resistance (Rf) increases when the fluid temperature decreases. The higher the dispersed oil fraction, the higher the Rf for all temperatures due to higher oil deposition. Addition of 0.2%vol to 0.5%vol of alkylbenzene sulfonate caused an appreciable reduction in Rf depending on oil fraction and Reynolds number. The mitigation percent was higher for a lower Reynolds number, reaching up to 96%.  相似文献

Heat exchanger network retrofit using a pinch based approach is presented. In this approach, the criterion of minimum sensitivity of heat exchanger to fouling effects is accounted for. The present paper introduces this criterion without explaining its details that are described in the literature. A summary is given of HEN reconstruction in a crude distillation unit processing 4.2 million ton crude oil per year. While the total heat quantity of hot streams is 110 MW, the heat recovery in the existing HEN is 60 MW. Using Pinch Analysis, the target value of heat recovery at ΔTmin=10 K was determined at 91 MW. Measurements were carried out on the existing HEN with the aim to determine the influence of fouling effects on the heat transfer in the exchangers. Taking local constraints including fouling into account, HEN reconstruction was proposed. The heat savings in the reconstructed HEN was estimated at 75 MW.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Visbreakers and other thermal cracking units are thermal process units in crude oil refineries that upgrade heavy petroleum, usually residual oils produced from atmospheric or vacuum distillation of crude oil. The associated process streams of these units consist of heavy hydrocarbons with very high viscosities and impurities, resulting in fouling of the heat exchangers used to cool or heat these streams. This paper presents a practical fouling analysis for thermal cracking units in a refinery in Germany. Fouling management at this refinery was initiated as part of the refinery energy-saving program. Following similar analysis of the refinery's crude preheat trains, heat exchanger networks associated in the thermal cracking units were modeled by entering the plant monitoring data, network topology, and heat exchanger geometries into a commercial heat exchanger network simulator, SmartPM. Fouling behaviors of vacuum residue streams and thermal cracker residue streams were identified and quantified. Both chemical reaction fouling and particulate fouling mechanisms were identified to be responsible for the fouling in these streams. Dynamic fouling models were fitted and used to predict fouling of these heavy petroleum streams, which fouled on both the shell and tube sides of the shell-and-tube heat exchangers.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with how non-linear physical state space models can be applied to on-line detection of fouling in heat exchangers. The model parameters are estimated by using an extended Kalman filter and measurements of inlet and outlet temperatures and mass flow rates. In contrast to most conventional methods, fouling can be detected when the heat exchanger operates in transient states. Measurements from a clean counterflow heat exchanger are first used to optimize the Kalman filter. Then fouling is considered. The results show that the proposed method is very sensitive, hence well suited for fouling detection.  相似文献

Performance of a dairy heat exchanger declines as milk fouling deposits on the heating surface. It causes an increased resistance to heat flow thereby the milk outlet temperature decreases with increasing fouling thicknesses. Various models have been suggested for the prediction of fouling thickness and milk outlet temperature in a heat exchanger. The present paper describes an improved simulation model for the accurate estimation of fouling thickness and milk outlet temperature. Local fouling factor in terms of the Biot number is used in the work undertaken. Fouling thickness and milk outlet temperature are predicted as a function of time and over the entire length of the heat exchanger. Right from the beginning fouling occurred to a greater extent towards the outlet and with the progress of time the rate of increase of the fouling thickness decreased. The milk outlet temperature decreased with the time as the fouling increased.  相似文献

Experimental fouling data have been analyzed on the basis of the change in overall heal transfer coefficient of the fouling test section. It is assumed that thermal hydraulic conditions in the test section remain reasonably constant for the duration of a fouling test. The model ofTaborek et al.|I| is used, and two parameters,/8,. and Rf?, that can be determined for each fouling test are derived by regression analysis. The parameter Rf? contains all the factors that influence fouling, while 1/ ?c, contains shear stress, deposit thickness, and bonding strength of the deposit. The parameter R?is the asymptotic fouling resistance and ? is the lime constant of the fouling resistance-time curve. These parameters were determined as a function of surface temperature. Limited data were available to indicate the effect of velocity on the parameters. The parameters 1/8, and R? may be used to predict the history of fouling in a heat exchanger. Until more.data are obtained and analyzed in this fashion, the values of 1/ ?c. and R? obtained in this paper should be applied at conditions for which the fouling data were obtained. A numerical example is presented.  相似文献

In this paper, a systematic comparison is performed to investigate fouling of suspended particles under forced convective and subcooled flow boiling heat transfer. For this purpose, two different types of fouling are separately considered: crystallization fouling of dissolved CaSO4 particles in water and particulate fouling of suspended Al2O3 particles in n–heptane. The effect of hydraulic parameters such as fluid velocity and also bubble generation under subcooled flow boiling are studied. Results of the experiments demonstrate that creation of boiling condition in the heat exchanger has opposite influence in these two types of fouling. It means that bubble generation on the heat transfer surface promotes scale formation under crystallization fouling. This is due to the fact that increased bubble generation creates higher supersaturation beneath the vapor bubble, therefore, increasing the crystal concentration in the boundary layer. On the other hand, boiling condition inhibits the scale formation under particulate fouling because the suspended particles are repelled from the boundary layer by the strong turbulences created by the swarm of bubbles.  相似文献

The influence of flow direction with respect to gravity on particulate fouling of heat exchangers is investigated experimentally to determine the optimal flow direction to minimize fouling. Four orientations of flow have been investigated: horizontal flow, upward flow, downward flow, and a flow under an angle of 45°. It is observed that fouling starts at the point of stagnation irrespective of the flow direction, and also at the top of the heat exchanger tubes. Particulate fouling grows from these two points till they meet and the fouling layer covers the whole surface of the heat exchanger tube. Fouling at the upper half of the tubes is much faster than the lower half of the tubes, and the fouling rate is faster at the bottom tubes of the heat exchanger section than at the upper tubes. The best orientation for lingering particulate fouling is the downward flow, where the flow stagnation point coincides with the top point of the heat exchanger tubes and the growth of the fouling layer only starts from one point.  相似文献

Abstract

In this work, a nonintrusive device to monitor fouling of a plate heat exchanger is presented. This device is composed of a flat electrical resistance covering a thermocouple located on the external face of a tubular holding section. The tubular holding section is placed immediately after the investigated plate heat exchanger, constituting the heating zone for which fouling monitoring is required. The principle of detection consisted in following the evolution of the measured temperature with time when a fixed thermal heat flux imposed by the resistance is dissipated through the temperature sensor. The measured temperature is supposed to vary with time since the inner temperature on the inner surface of the holding tubular zone is linked to the fouling growth. It is shown that the device response is highly correlated to the fouling occurring in the plate heat exchanger and could be a promising way for monitoring fouling rate (cheap and easy to implement avoiding cleanability drawbacks).  相似文献

Although fouling on heat exchanger tubes is extensively investigated, due to the lack of energy resources, the effects of fouling on heat exchangers is still an important area of study and gaining more and more attention every day. In this study we investigated the effects of fouling on heat transfer and flow structures numerically for cross-flow heat exchanger tube geometry. The distributions of temperature, heat transfer coefficient and heat flux at the surface of fouling were obtained for single and double layer fouling cases. In the analysis, Reynolds number and the blockage ratio were fixed to 100 and 0.1 respectively. We used ANSYS software in our analyses and compared some of our results with the literature.  相似文献

Heat exchangers operating in process industries are fouled during operations and results in decrease in the thermal efficiency of a heat exchanger. Once the thermal efficiency decreases to a minimum acceptable level, cleaning of the equipment becomes necessary to restore the performance. This paper uses C-factor as a tool for investigation of the performance of a heat exchanger due to fouling which consequently gives information regarding the extent of fouling developed on the heat transfer surfaces. The fouling parameters are predicted by measurements of flow rate and pressure drop. In contrast to most conventional methods, the extent of fouling can be detected considering the flow rate and pressure drop when the heat exchanger operates in transient states. The C-Factor is first calculated through out cleaning period and then compared with the clean and the design value. The results show that the proposed tool is very effective in detecting the fouling developed and the corresponding degradation in heat transfer efficiency of a heat exchanger. Hence the results of this work can find applications in predicting the reduction in heat transfer efficiency due to fouling in heat exchangers that are in operation and assist the exchanger operators to plan cleaning schedules.  相似文献
