A new multivariable <Subscript><Emphasis Type="BoldItalic">6</Emphasis></Subscript><Emphasis Type="BoldItalic">ψ</Emphasis><Subscript><Emphasis Type="BoldItalic">6</Emphasis></Subscript> summation formula

By multidimensional matrix inversion, combined with an A _r extension of Jackson’s ₈ φ ₇ summation formula by Milne, a new multivariable ₈ φ ₇ summation is derived. By a polynomial argument this ₈ φ ₇ summation is transformed to another multivariable ₈ φ ₇ summation which, by taking a suitable limit, is reduced to a new multivariable extension of the nonterminating ₆ φ ₅ summation. The latter is then extended, by analytic continuation, to a new multivariable extension of Bailey’s very-well-poised ₆ ψ ₆ summation formula. Interpolation of operators of weak type (ϕ<Subscript>0</Subscript>, ψ<Subscript>0</Subscript>, ϕ<Subscript>1</Subscript>, ψ<Subscript>1</Subscript>) in Lorentz spaces

We prove theorems on interpolation of quasilinear operators of weak type (ϕ₀, ψ₀, ϕ₀, ψ₁) in Lorentz spaces. On the parity of the class number of an imaginary abelian field of conductor 2<Superscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">a</Emphasis></Superscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">p</Emphasis><Superscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">b</Emphasis></Superscript>

Let p be an odd prime number, and p^n₀{p^{n_0}} the highest power of p dividing 2 ^p−1 − 1. Let K_n=Q(z_pⁿ⁺¹){K_n={\bf Q}(\zeta_{p^{n+1}})} and L_n,j=K_n⁺(z_2^j+2){L_{n,j}=K_n^+(\zeta_{2^{j+2}})} for j ≥ 0. Let h_n^*{h_n^*} be the relative class number of K _n , and h _n,j the class number of L _n,j , respectively. Let n be an integer with n ≥ n ₀. We prove that if the ratio h_n^*/h_n-1^*{h_n^*/h_{n-1}^*} is odd, then h _n,j /h _n−1,j is odd for any j ≥ 0.     

On the Theory of <Emphasis Type="Italic">L</Emphasis><Subscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">p</Emphasis></Subscript>(<Emphasis Type="Italic">L</Emphasis><Subscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">q</Emphasis></Subscript>)-Banach Lattices

Given 1≤ p,q < ∞, let BL_pL_q be the class of all Banach lattices X such that X is isometrically lattice isomorphic to a band in some L_p(L_q)-Banach lattice. We show that the range of a positive contractive projection on any BL_pL_q-Banach lattice is itself in BL_pL_q. It is a consequence of this theorem and previous results that BL_pL_q is first-order axiomatizable in the language of Banach lattices. By studying the pavings of arbitrary BL_pL_q-Banach lattices by finite dimensional sublattices that are themselves in this class, we give an explicit set of axioms for BL_pL_q. We also consider the class of all sublattices of L_p(L_q)-Banach lattices; for this class (when p/q is not an integer) we give a set of axioms that are similar to Krivine’s well-known axioms for the subspaces of L_p-Banach spaces (when p/2 is not an integer). We also extend this result to the limiting case q = ∞.     

Some designs and codes invariant under the groups <Emphasis Type="Italic">S</Emphasis><Subscript>9</Subscript> and <Emphasis Type="Italic">A</Emphasis><Subscript>8</Subscript>

We examine some designs and binary codes constructed from the primitive permutation representations of the groups PSL ₂(8) and PSL ₂(9). For PSL ₂(8) of degree 36, we construct a design and its code with the automorphism groups PSL ₂(8) and S ₉, respectively. For PSL ₂(8) of degree 36 and PSL ₂(9) of degree 15, we construct some designs and its codes invariant under the groups S ₉ and A ₈, respectively. The weight distribution and the dual of these codes are determined. By considering the action of automorphism groups on some of these codes, we obtain the structure of the stabilizer for every codeword and construct some designs such that S ₉ or A ₈ act primitively on them.      

Exact order of relative widths of classes <Emphasis Type="Italic">W</Emphasis><Stack><Subscript>1</Subscript><Superscript>r</Superscript></Stack> in the space <Emphasis Type="Italic">L</Emphasis><Subscript>1</Subscript>

Novikov superalgebras with <Emphasis Type="Italic">A</Emphasis><Subscript>0</Subscript> = <Emphasis Type="Italic">A</Emphasis><Subscript>1</Subscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">A</Emphasis><Subscript>1</Subscript>

Novikov superalgebras are related to quadratic conformal superalgebras which correspond to the Hamiltonian pairs and play a fundamental role in completely integrable systems. In this note we show that the Novikov superalgebras with A ₀ = A ₁ A ₁ and dim A ₁ = 2 are of type N and give a class of Novikov superalgebras of type S with A ₀ = A ₁ A ₁.     

Equilateral Sets in <Emphasis Type="Italic">l</Emphasis><Stack><Subscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">p</Emphasis></Subscript><Superscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">n</Emphasis></Superscript></Stack>

We show that for every odd integer p 1 there is an absolute positive constantc_p, so that the maximum cardinality of a set of vectors in Rⁿ such that the l_p distance between any pair is precisely 1, is at most c_p n log n. We prove some upper bounds for other l_p norms as well.     

The <Emphasis Type="Italic">(S)</Emphasis><Stack><Subscript>+</Subscript><Superscript>1</Superscript></Stack>Condition for Generalized Vector Variational Inequalities

In this paper, we extend the (S) ₊ ¹ condition to multivalued mappings in an ordered Hausdorff topological vector space and we derive some existence results for generalized vector variational inequalities associated with multivalued mappings satisfying the (S) ₊ ¹ condition. We generalize also an existence result of Cubiotti and Yao for generalized variational inequalities of class (S) ₊ ¹ to barreled normed spaces. As consequences, some existence results for vector variational inequalities are established.This work was partially supported by grants from the National Science Council of the Republic of China. Three realizations of the quantum affine algebra <Emphasis Type="Italic">U</Emphasis><Subscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">q</Emphasis></Subscript>(<Emphasis Type="Italic">A</Emphasis><Subscript>2</Subscript><Superscript>(2)</Superscript>

We establish explicit isomorphisms between three realizations of the quantum twisted affine algebra U _q (A ₂ ⁽²⁾: the Drinfeld current realization, the Chevalley realization, and the so-called RLL realization proposed by Reshetikhin, Takhtajan, and Faddeev.     

On the imbedding of the Waterman class in the class <Emphasis Type="Italic">h</Emphasis><Stack><Subscript>p</Subscript><Superscript>ω</Superscript></Stack>

Estimates of Distances Between Sums of the Spaces ℓ<Stack><Subscript>n</Subscript><Superscript>p</Superscript></Stack>. II

We study classical, modified, and weak Banach-Mazur distances between sums of the spaces ℓ _n ^p . We calculate explicitly the classical and weak Banach-Mazur distances between sums of the spaces ℓ _n ^p and obtain bounds for ratios of distances between sums of the spaces ℓ _n ^p . Periodic Groups Saturated with the Groups <Emphasis Type="Italic">L</Emphasis><Subscript>2</Subscript>(<Emphasis Type="Italic">p</Emphasis><Superscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">n</Emphasis></Superscript>)

Given an indexing set I and a finite field K_α for each α ∈ I, let ? = {L₂(K_α) | α ∈ I} and \(\mathfrak{N} = \{ SL_2 (K_\alpha )|\alpha \in I\}\). We prove that each periodic group G saturated with groups in \(\Re (\mathfrak{N})\) is isomorphic to L₂(P) (respectively SL₂(P)) for a suitable locally finite field P.     

On the torsion in K_2 of a field

For a field F,let Gn(F) = {{a,Φn(a)} ∈ K2(F) | a,Φn(a) ∈ F*},where Φn(x) is the n-th cyclotomic polynomial.At first,by using Faltings' theorem on Mordell conjecture it is proved that if F is a number field and if n = 4,8,12 is a positive integer having a square factor then Gn(F) is not a subgroup of K2(F),and then by using the results of Manin,Grauert,Samuel and Li on Mordell conjecture theorem for function fields,a similar result is established for function fields over an algebraically closed field.     

Quasirecognition by prime graph of the simple group <Superscript>2</Superscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">F</Emphasis><Subscript>4</Subscript>(<Emphasis Type="Italic">q</Emphasis>)

As the main result, we show that if G is a finite group such that Γ(G) = Γ(² F ₄(q)), where q = 2^2m+1 for some m ≧ 1, then G has a unique nonabelian composition factor isomorphic to ² F ₄(q). We also show that if G is a finite group satisfying |G| =|² F ₄(q)| and Γ(G) = Γ(² F ₄(q)), then G ≅ ² F ₄(q). As a consequence of our result we give a new proof for a conjecture of W. Shi and J. Bi for ² F ₄(q). The third author was supported in part by a grant from IPM (No. 87200022).     

Certain pairs of irreducible characters of the groups <Emphasis Type="Italic">S</Emphasis><Subscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">n</Emphasis></Subscript>

The investigation of the pairs of irreducible characters of the symmetric group S _n that have the same set of roots in one of the sets A _n and S _n ? A _n is continued. All such pairs of irreducible characters of the group S _n are found in the case when the least of the main diagonal’s lengths of the Young diagrams corresponding to these characters does not exceed 2. Some arguments are obtained for the conjecture that alternating groups A _n have no pairs of semiproportional irreducible characters.     

On the asymptotic optimality of the <Emphasis Type="Italic">cμ</Emphasis>/<Emphasis Type="Italic">θ</Emphasis> rule under ergodic cost

We consider an overloaded multi-server multi-class queueing model where customers may abandon while waiting to be served. For class i, service is provided at rate μ _i , and abandonment occurs at rate θ _i . In a many-server fluid regime, we show that prioritizing the classes in decreasing order of c _i μ _i /θ _i asymptotically minimizes an ergodic holding cost, where c _i denotes the equivalent holding cost per unit time for class i.     

Asymptotics of the Codimensions <Emphasis Type="Italic">c</Emphasis><Subscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">n</Emphasis></Subscript> in the Algebra <Emphasis Type="Italic">F</Emphasis><Superscript>(7)</Superscript>

The paper studies the additive structure of the algebra F⁽⁷⁾, i.e., a relatively free associative countably generated algebra with the identity [x₁,..., x₇] = 0 over an infinite field of characteristic ≠ 2, 3. First, the space of proper multilinear polynomials in this algebra is investigated. As an application, estimates for the codimensions c_n = dimF_n⁽⁷⁾ are obtained, where F_n⁽⁷⁾ stands for the subspace of multilinear polynomials of degree n in the algebra F⁽⁷⁾.
