We study a single removable server in an infinite and a finite queueing systems with Poisson arrivals and general distribution service times. The server may be turned on at arrival epochs or off at service completion epochs. We present a recursive method, using the supplementary variable technique and treating the supplementary variable as the remaining service time, to obtain the steady state probability distribution of the number of customers in a finite system. The method is illustrated analytically for three different service time distributions: exponential, 3-stage Erlang, and deterministic. Cost models for infinite and finite queueing systems are respectively developed to determine the optimal operating policy at minimum cost.  相似文献

In this paper we deal with a single removable service station queueing system with Poisson arrivals and Erlang distribution service times. The service station can be turned on at arrival epochs or off at departure epochs. While the service station is working, it is subject to breakdowns according to a Poisson process. When the station breaks down, it requires repair at a repair facility, where the repair times follow the negative exponential distribution. Conditions for a stable queueing system, that is steady-state, are provided. The steady-state results are derived and it is shown that the probability that the service station is busy is equal to the traffic intensity. Following the construction of the total expected cost function per unit time, we determine the optimal operating policy at minimum cost.  相似文献

This paper deals with an N policy M/G/1 queueing system with a single removable and unreliable server whose arrivals form a Poisson process. Service times, repair times, and startup times are assumed to be generally distributed. When the queue length reaches N(N ? 1), the server is immediately turned on but is temporarily unavailable to serve the waiting customers. The server needs a startup time before providing service until there are no customers in the system. We analyze various system performance measures and investigate some designated known expected cost function per unit time to determine the optimal threshold N at a minimum cost. Sensitivity analysis is also studied.  相似文献

We study a single removable server in an M/G/1 queueing system operating under the N policy in steady-state. The server may be turned on at arrival epochs or off at departure epochs. Using the maximum entropy principle with several well-known constraints, we develop the approximate formulae for the probability distributions of the number of customers and the expected waiting time in the queue. We perform a comparative analysis between the approximate results with exact analytic results for three different service time distributions, exponential, 2-stage Erlang, and 2-stage hyper-exponential. The maximum entropy approximation approach is accurate enough for practical purposes. We demonstrate, through the maximum entropy principle results, that the N policy M/G/1 queueing system is sufficiently robust to the variations of service time distribution functions.  相似文献

operating under the triadic (0,Q, N,M) policy, where L is the maximum number of customers in the system. The number of working servers can be adjusted one at a time at arrival epochs or at service completion epochs depending on the number of customers in the system. Analytic closed-form solutions of the controllable M/M/2 queueing system with finite capacity operating under the triadic (0,Q, N,M) policy are derived. This is a generalization of the ordinary M/M/2 and the controllable M/M/1 queueing systems in the literature. The total expected cost function per unit time is developed to obtain the optimal operating (0,Q, N,M) policy at minimum cost.  相似文献

This paper considers a like-queue production system in which server vacations and breakdowns are possible. The decision-maker can turn a single server on at any arrival epoch or off at any service completion. We model the system by an M[x]/M/1 queueing system with N policy. The server can be turned off and takes a vacation with exponential random length whenever the system is empty. If the number of units waiting in the system at any vacation completion is less than N, the server will take another vacation. If the server returns from a vacation and finds at least N units in the system, he immediately starts to serve the waiting units. It is assumed that the server breaks down according to a Poisson process and the repair time has an exponential distribution. We derive the distribution of the system size through the probability generating function. We further study the steady-state behavior of the system size distribution at random (stationary) point of time as well as the queue size distribution at departure point of time. Other system characteristics are obtained by means of the grand process and the renewal process. Finally, the expected cost per unit time is considered to determine the optimal operating policy at a minimum cost. The sensitivity analysis is also presented through numerical experiments.  相似文献

We study a single removable and non-reliable server in the N policy M/M/1 queueing system. The server begins service only when the number of customers in the system reaches N (N1). After each idle period, the startup times of the server follow the negative exponential distribution. While the server is working, it is subject to breakdowns according to a Poisson process. When the server breaks down, it requires repair at a repair facility, where the repair times follow the negative exponential distribution. The steady-state results are derived and it is shown that the probability that the server is busy is equal to the traffic intensity. Cost model is developed to determine the optimal operating N policy at minimum cost.  相似文献

This paper studies the operating characteristics of an M[x]/G/1 queueing system under a modified vacation policy, where the server leaves for a vacation as soon as the system is empty. The server takes at most J vacations repeatedly until at least one customer is found waiting in the queue when the server returns from a vacation. We derive the system size distribution at different points in time, as well as the waiting time distribution in the queue. Further, we derive some important characteristics including the expected length of the busy period and idle period. This shows that the results generalize those of the multiple vacation policy and the single vacation policy M[x]/G/1 queueing system. Finally, a cost model is developed to determine the optimum of J at a minimum cost. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We consider a discrete-time single-server queueing model where arrivals are governed by a discrete Markovian arrival process (DMAP), which captures both burstiness and correlation in the interarrival times, and the service times and the vacation duration times are assumed to have a general phase-type distributions. The vacation policy is that of a working vacation policy where the server serves the customers at a lower rate during the vacation period as compared to the rate during the normal busy period. Various performance measures of this queueing system like the stationary queue length distribution, waiting time distribution and the distribution of regular busy period are derived. Through numerical experiments, certain insights are presented based on a comparison of the considered model with an equivalent model with independent arrivals, and the effect of the parameters on the performance measures of this model are analyzed.  相似文献

This paper studies the operating characteristics of an M[x]/G/1 queueing system under vacation policies with startup/closedown times, where the vacation time, the startup time, and the closedown time are generally distributed. When all the customers are served in the system exhaustively, the server shuts down (deactivates) by a closedown time. After shutdown, the server operates one of (1) multiple vacation policy and (2) single vacation policy. When the server reactivates since shutdown, he needs a startup time before providing the service. If a customer arrives during a closedown time, the service is immediately started without a startup time. The server may break down according to a Poisson process while working and his repair time has a general distribution. We analyze the system characteristics for the vacation models.  相似文献

We investigate the optimal management problem of an M/G/1/K queueing system with combined F policy and an exponential startup time. The F policy queueing problem investigates the most common issue of controlling the arrival to a queueing system. We present a recursive method, using the supplementary variable technique and treating the supplementary variable as the remaining service time, to obtain the steady state probability distribution of the number of customers in the system. The method is illustrated analytically for exponential service time distribution. A cost model is established to determine the optimal management F policy at minimum cost. We use an efficient Maple computer program to calculate the optimal value of F and some system performance measures. Sensitivity analysis is also investigated.  相似文献

This paper considers an infinite-capacity M/M/c queueing system with modified Bernoulli vacation under a single vacation policy. At each service completion of a server, the server may go for a vacation or may continue to serve the next customer, if any in the queue. The system is analyzed as a quasi-birth-and-death (QBD) process and the necessary and sufficient condition of system equilibrium is obtained. The explicit closed-form of the rate matrix is derived and the useful formula for computing stationary probabilities is developed by using matrix analytic approach. System performance measures are explicitly developed in terms of computable forms. A cost model is derived to determine the optimal values of the number of servers, service rate and vacation rate simultaneously at the minimum total expected cost per unit time. Illustrative numerical examples demonstrate the optimization approach as well as the effect of various parameters on system performance measures.  相似文献

We consider the machine repair problem in which failed machines balk (do not enter) with a constant probability (1 – b) and renege (leave the queue after entering) according to a negative exponential distribution. A group of identical automatic machines are maintained by R servers which themselves are subject to breakdowns. Failure and service times of the machines, and breakdown and repair times of the servers, are assumed to follow a negative exponential distribution. Each server is subject to breakdown even if no failed machines are in the system. This paper presents a matrix geometric method for deriving the steady-state probabilities, using which various system performance measures that can be obtained. A cost model is developed to determine the optimum number of servers. The minimum expected cost, the optimal number of servers, and various system performance measures are provided based on assumed numerical values given to the system parameters. Also the sensitivity analysis is investigated.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the finite-buffer single server queue with vacation(s). It is assumed that the arrivals follow a batch Markovian arrival process (BMAP) and the server serves customers according to a non-exhaustive type gated-limited service discipline. It has been also considered that the service and vacation distributions possess rational Laplace-Stieltjes transformation (LST) as these types of distributions may approximate many other distributions appeared in queueing literature. Among several batch acceptance/rejection strategies, the partial batch acceptance strategy is discussed in this paper. The service limit L (1 ≤ LN) is considered to be fixed, where N is the buffer-capacity excluding the one in service. It is assumed that in each busy period the server continues to serve until either L customers out of those that were waiting at the start of the busy period are served or the queue empties, whichever occurs first. The queue-length distribution at vacation termination/service completion epochs is determined by solving a set of linear simultaneous equations. The successive substitution method is used in the steady-state equations embedded at vacation termination/service completion epochs. The distribution of the queue-length at an arbitrary epoch has been obtained using the supplementary variable technique. The queue-length distributions at pre-arrival and post-departure epoch are also obtained. The results of the corresponding infinite-buffer queueing model have been analyzed briefly and matched with the previous model. Net profit function per unit of time is derived and an optimal service limit and buffer-capacity are obtained from a maximal expected profit. Some numerical results are presented in tabular and graphical forms.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the F-policy M/M/1/K queueing system with working vacation and an exponential startup time. The F-policy deals with the issue of controlling arrivals to a queueing system, and the server requires a startup time before allowing customers to enter the system. For the queueing systems with working vacation, the server can still provide service to customers rather than completely stop the service during a vacation period. The matrix-analytic method is applied to develop the steady-state probabilities, and then obtain several system characteristics. We construct the expected cost function and formulate an optimization problem to find the minimum cost. The direct search method and Quasi-Newton method are implemented to determine the optimal system capacity K, the optimal threshold F and the optimal service rates (μB,μV) at the minimum cost. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to investigate the effect of changes in the system parameters on the expected cost function. Finally, numerical examples are provided for illustration purpose.  相似文献
