SURVEY OF AIRBORNE POLLEN IN HUBEI PROVINCE OF CHINA

Objective To study the genera and seasonal distribution of airborne pollen in Hubei province of China, and its relationship with pollinosis. Methods From November 2003 to October 2004, an airborne pollen investigation was performed in 16 chosen areas in 12 cities of Hubei province using gravity sedimentation technique. Meanwhile, univalent skin prick tests of pollens were performed and the invasion season was studied on 2 300 patients with pollinosis. Among them, 352 cases underwent the airway responsiveness measurements, and the correlation between airway responsiveness and results of pollen count was analyzed. Results A total of 61 pollen genera were observed and 257 520 pollens were collected. The peak of airborne pollen distribution occurred in two seasons each year: spring (March and April) and autumn (from August to October). The attack of pollinosis corresponded to the peak of pollen distribution. There was a significantly negative relationship between the provocation dose causing a 20% decrease of forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) from baseline and airborne pollen concentration (r = -0.6829, P < 0.05). Conclusion This study provides useful information for airborne pollen epidemiology of Hubei province, and it provides important insights to clinical prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of pollen-related allergic diseases.

1 Brief introduction Established in 1993, the Institute of Cerebrovascular Diseases of Qingdao University Medical College was authorized as Shandong Province Key Laboratory of Brain Diseases Prevention and Treatment in 1996. It is composed of laboratories of molecular biology, neuropathology, neurophysiology, neurobiochemistry, neuroimmunology, cell culture, brain and cognition, and neurorehabilitation. Many scientific projects of national, provincial and municipal levels have been taken on in recent years. The research has attained international or national levels. In teaching work, we have courses for graduates and undergraduates and have trained many young and middle-aged scholars. In clinical work, we have carried out the prevention and treatment of stroke and the cognition disorder of aging, and gotten good social and economic benefits. The instruments, books and materials, the workplace are available for training MD students. The institute is known to the country of its high academic level.

TWENTY-THREE CASES OF ATROPHIC RHINITIS TREATED BY DEEP PUNCTURE AT THREE POINTS IN THE NASAL REGION

Atrophic rhinitis is a disease which manifests itself mainly by anosmia due to dryness andatrophy of the nasal mucosa.There is no specific therapy for the disease at present.In thepast few years,23 cases of atrophic rhinitis were treated mainly by deep puncture at threepoints in the nasal region with satisfactory results.In order to find out the functionalchanges of the nasal mucosa,the mucociliary transport rate(MTR),surface temperatureof the conchai mucosa,acid-base scale of nasal secretion,and volume of nasal secretionwere determined before and after the treatment.

THE CLINICAL STUDY OF THE NORMAL WIDTH OF THE ATTACHED GINGIVA IN PERMANENT DENTITION

The widths of attached gingiva of all tooth in 300 individuals (aged 12-63 years) without clinical evidence of gingival inflammation were measured for this study. The measurement show that the widest zone on buccolabial aspect was in the incisor with a height of 9.5ram, the narrowest was in the first premolar. The width of lingual mandibular attached gingiva was increased from incisor to molar area. The width of attached gingiva did not relate to sex and age. There was no difference in width of attached gingiva between left and right tooth. Our result is about the same with those of most previous studies.     

APPLICATION OF 1NTERNALFIXATION IN THE TREATMENT FOR TUBERCULOSIS OF THE SPINE

This is a study of 18 patients who had surgical treatment for spinal ttuberculosis All patients were admitted with the spinal tuberculosis and treated with a combination of anterior debridement and bone graft with posterior internal fixaton using the Luque or Dick technique.The patients were able to walk within a few days postoperation.Three to seven years follow-ups show no recurrence,kyphosis and/or solid fusinon.
