Let 1 denote the smallest Dirichlet eigenvalue for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on and let + denote the positive root of (+N–2) = 1. Let p * = 1 + 2/(N + +). If 1 < p < p *, no positive global solution exists. If p>p *, positive global solutions do exist. The qualitative behavior of solutions of the mixed problem utt = u-a(x)ut in IR x , u=0 on IR x , is studied in the case when a>0 and IRn is bounded. Roughly speaking, if aamin>0, then solutions decay at least as fast as exp t( –1/2amin), with the possible exception of a finite dimensional set of smooth solutions whose existence is associated with a phenomenon of overdamping. It is proposed to investigate the stability of a plane axisymmetric flow with an angular velocity profile (r) such that the angular velocity is constant when r < rO – L and r > rO + L but varies monotonically from 1 to 2 near the point rO, the thickness of the transition zone being small L rO, whereas the change in velocity is not small ¦21¦ 2, 1. Obviously, as L O short-wave disturbances with respect to the azimuthal coordinate (k=m/rO 1/rO) will be unstable with a growth rate-close to the Kelvin—Helmholtz growth rate. In the case L=O (i.e., for a profile with a shear-discontinuity) we find the instability growth rate O and show that where the thickness of the discontinuity L is finite (but small) the growth rate does not differ from O up to terms proportional to kL 1 and 1/m 1. Using this example it is possible to investigate the effect of rotation on the flow stability. Let be a bounded open connected subset of 3 with a sufficiently smooth boundary. The additional condition det dx vol () is imposed on the admissible deformations : ¯ of a hyperelastic body whose reference configuration is ¯. We show that the associated minimization problem provides a mathematical model for matter to come into frictionless contact with itself but not interpenetrate. We also extend J. Ball's theorems on existence to this case by establishing the existence of a minimizer of the energy in the space W 1,p (;3), p > 3, that is injective almost everywhere.  相似文献

We study solutions of the two-well problem, i.e., maps which satisfy uSO(n)ASO(n)B a.c. in n , where A and B are n×n matrices with positive determinants. This problem arises in the study of microstructure in solid-solid phase transitions. Under the additional hypothesis that the set E where the gradient lies in SO(n) A has finite perimeter, we show that u is locally only a function of one variable and that the boundary of E consists of (subsets of) hyperplanes which extend to and which do not intersect in . This may not be the case if the assumption on E is dropped. We also discuss applications of this result to magnetostrictive materials.  相似文献

where f is a dissipative nonlinearity of polynomial growth. In a previous paper we showed that, as 0, the equations (E ) have a limiting equation which is an abstract semilinear parabolic equation defined on a closed linear subspace of H 1(). We also proved that the family of the corresponding attractors is upper semicontinuous at = 0. In this paper we prove that, if satisfies some natural assumptions, then there is a family of inertial C 1-manifolds for (E ) of some fixed finite dimension . In a previous derivation of Darcy's law, the closure problem was presented in terms of an integro-differential equation for a second-order tensor. In this paper, we show that the closure problem can be transformed to a set of Stokes-like equations and we compare solutions of these equations with experimental data. Given a bounded open subset of R n, we prove the existence of a minimum point for a functional F defined on the family A() of all quasiopen subsets of , under the assumption that F is decreasing with respect to set inclusion and that F is lower semicontinuous on A() with respect to a suitable topology, related to the resolvents of the Laplace operator with Dirichlet boundary condition. In a magnetohydrodynamic approximation, an investigation is made of the propagation of waves in a plasma, whose characteristic frequency is much less than the collision frequency of the electrons e –1. It is assumed that the magnetic field is sufficiently strong so that the equality ee1 will be satisfied, where e is the cyclotron frequency of the rotation of the electrons. With large magnetic Reynolds numbers (Rm1), which are characteristic for many astrophysical problems, this latter condition leads to a need to take account of dispersion effects connected with Hall currents, in the absence of Joule dissipation. The dispersion equation for the propagation of small perturbations is analyzed in the limiting cases of weak dispersion and of a wave propagating along the magnetic field. In the case of weak dispersion, an equation is derived for nonlinear waves. The solutions are found in the form of stationary solitons. The region of such solutions is analyzed. We are concerned with the coerciveness of the strain energy E(u) (in linear elasticity) associated with a displacement vector u on the Sobolev space H1 () or its subspaces, a domain in n representing an isotropic elastic body—certain specific cases are called Korn's inequalities. The steady periodic temperature distribution in an infinitely long solid cylinder crossed by an alternating current is evaluated. First, the time dependent and non-uniform power generated per unit volume by Joule effect within the cylinder is determined. Then, the dimensionless temperature distribution is obtained by analytical methods in steady periodic regime. Dimensionless tables which yield the amplitude and the phase of temperature oscillations both on the axis and on the surface of copper or nichrome cylindrical electric resistors are presented.

Zusammenfassung Es wird die periodische Temperaturverteilung für den eingeschwungenen Zustand in einem unendlich langen, von Wechselstrom durchflossenen Vollzylinder ermittelt. Zuerst erfolgt die Bestimmung der zeitabhängigen, nichgleichförmigen Energiefreisetzung pro Volumeneinheit des Zylinders infolge Joulescher Wärmeentwicklung und anschließend die Ermittlung der quasistationären Temperaturverteilung auf analytischem Wege. Amplitude und Phasenverzögerung der Temperaturschwingungen werden für die Achse und die Oberfläche eines Kupfer- oder Nickelchromzylinders tabellarisch in dimensionsloser Form mitgeteilt.

The vortex breakdown phenomenon in a closed cylindrical container with a rotating endwall disk was reproduced. Visualizations were performed to capture the prominent flow characteristics. The locations of the stagnation points of breakdown bubbles and the attendant global flow features were in excellent agreement with the preceding observations. Experiments were also carried out in a differentially-rotating cylindrical container in which the top endwall rotates at a relatively high angular velocity t, and the bottom endwall and the sidewall rotate at a low angular velocity sb. For a fixed cylinder aspect ratio, and for a given relative rotational Reynolds number based on the angular velocity difference tsb, the flow behavior is examined as |sb/t| increases. For a co-rotation (sb/t>0), the breakdown bubble is located closer to the bottom endwall disk. However, for a counter-rotation (sb/t<0), the bubble is seen closer to the top endwall disk. For sufficiently large values of sb, the bubble ceases to exist for both cases.  相似文献

In the present paper magnetohydrodynamic models are employed to investigate the stability of an inhomogeneous magnetic plasma with respect to perturbations in which the electric field may be regarded as a potential field (rot E 0). A hydrodynamic model, actually an extension of the well-known Chew-Goldberg er-Low model [1], is used to investigate motions transverse to a strong magnetic field in a collisionless plasma. The total viscous stress tensor is given; this includes, together with magnetic viscosity, the so-called inertial viscosity.Ordinary two-fluid hydrodynamics is used in the case of strong collisions=. It is shown that the collisional viscosity leads to flute-type instability in the case when, collisions being neglected, the flute mode is stabilized by a finite Larmor radius. We present a new general method to obtain regularity and a priori estimates for solutions of semilinear elliptic systems in bounded domains. This method is based on a bootstrap procedure, used alternatively on each component, in the scale of weighted Lebesgue spaces Lp()=Lp((x)dx), where (x) is the distance to the boundary. Using this method, we significantly improve the known existence results for various classes of elliptic systems.  相似文献
