Increasing fruit and vegetable consumption is an important health behaviour. Parental and other psychosocial influences on children's fruit and vegetable consumption are poorly understood. The contribution of a variety of psychosocial and environmental factors to consumption of fruit and vegetables by children aged 9-11 years was explored. Ninety-two mothers and children (48 girls and 44 boys) were recruited via urban primary health-care practices. Socio-economic and educational level, nutritional knowledge and health- and diet-related beliefs and attitudes were assessed in mothers and children by questionnaires and semistructured interviews. Mothers> diets were measured by a food frequency questionnaire, while children's diets were assessed by 3-day diaries (N=80). The pattern of influence of the various measures on fruit and vegetable consumption was compared with that on children's confectionery intake. The children's intakes of macronutrients were typical for the U.K. (37% fat, 50% carbohydrate and 13% protein by energy; 12 g/day fibre), while median fruit, fruit juice and vegetable intake amounted to about 2.5 servings/day. Univariate correlations and subsequent multiple regression analyses revealed quite different influences on the three food types. Independent predictors of children's fruit intake included mothers> nutritional knowledge (beta=0.37), mothers> frequency of fruit consumption (beta=0.30) and mothers> attitudinal conviction that increasing fruit and vegetable consumption by their children could reduce their risk of developing cancer (beta=0.27; multiple r2=0.37,p<0.0001). Children's vegetable consumption was independently explained by the child's liking for commonly eaten vegetables (beta=0.36) and the mother's belief in the importance of disease prevention when choosing her child's food (beta=-0.27 r2=0.20,p<0.001). Children's confectionery consumption was predicted by the mother's liking for confectionery (beta=0.32) and the children's concern for health in choosing what to eat (beta=-0.26 r2=0.16, p<0.005). Children's consumption of fruit and vegetables are related to different psychosocial and environmental factors. Promotion of this behaviour may require attention to nutritional education and child feeding strategies of parents.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to quantify the effectiveness of dietary retinol sources, orange fruit, and dark-green, leafy vegetables in improving vitamin A status, and to test whether orange fruit is a better source of vitamin A and carotenoids than are leafy vegetables. Anemic schoolchildren aged 7-11 y (n = 238) in West Java, Indonesia, were randomly allocated to 1 of 4 groups to consume 2 complete meals/d, 6 d/wk, for 9 wk: 1) 556 retinol equivalents (RE)/d from retinol-rich food (n = 48); 2) 509 RE/d from fruit (n = 49); 3) 684 RE/d from dark-green, leafy vegetables and carrots (n = 45); and 4) 44 RE/d from low-retinol, low-carotene food (n = 46). Mean changes in serum retinol concentrations of the retinol-rich, fruit, vegetable, and low-retinol, low-carotene groups were 0.23 (95% CI: 0.18, 0.28), 0.12 (0.06, 0.18), 0.07 (0.03,0.11), and 0.00 (-0.06, 0.05) micromol/L, respectively. Mean changes in serum beta-carotene concentrations in the vegetable and fruit groups were 0.14 (0.12, 0.17) and 0.52 (0.43, 0.60) micromol/L, respectively. Until now, it has been assumed that 6 microg dietary beta-carotene is equivalent to 1 RE. On the basis of this study, however, the equivalent of 1 RE would be 12 microg beta-carotene (95% CI: 6 microg, 29 microg) for fruit and 26 microg beta-carotene (95% CI: 13 microg, 76 microg) for leafy vegetables and carrots. Thus, the apparent mean vitamin A activity of carotenoids in fruit and in leafy vegetables and carrots was 50% (95% CI: 21%, 100%) and 23% (95% CI: 8%, 46%) of that assumed, respectively. This has important implications for choosing strategies for controlling vitamin A deficiency. Research should be directed toward ways of improving bioavailability and bioconversion of dietary carotenoids, focusing on factors such as intestinal parasites, absorption inhibitors, and food matrixes.  相似文献

Dietary intake, physical development and some indicator of health status of schoolchildren of Novosybkov (2th zone of strict control) and Vyshkov (3th zone) were studied. Energy and macronutrient intakes for schoolchildren can be considered adequate. Dietary intake intake of vitamins A, E, beta-carotene and especially C, and calcium were rather low. Low intakes of vitamin and calcium are results from low dietary consumption of milk and diary products, fruits and vegetables Physical development of Novosybkov's children is considered adequate and do not differ from that of Moscow's schoolchildren. The frequency of obese schoolchildren was seen in Novosybkov's children in comparison with Moscow's ones. On the contrary, among rural Vyshkov's children the high frequency of children with deficit of body mass was examined. The number of children relating to 2 or 3 groups of health was higher in Novosybkov than in Moscow. The data about higher prevalence of child morbidity were supported. One of risk factors of decreasing of children body toleration to low level of radiation are low level of vitamin intake and other defects of health nutrition.  相似文献

Eighteen-week-old laying hens were fed diets containing 0, 10, or 20% ground flaxseed and 10 or 100 IU vitamin E/kg diet, in a factorial arrangement. When birds were 60 wk of age, eggs were collected from various treatments and used in taste panel studies. All studies involved freshly boiled eggs. In Experiment 1, four separate panels were conducted to obtain information on egg aroma, egg flavor, presence of any off-flavor, and overall acceptability of the egg. Pooled data showed a very significant difference among panelists for all attributes tested (P < 0.01) and off-flavors were detected in eggs from hens fed 10 and 20% flaxseed with 10 mg vitamin E/kg. In Experiment 2 panelists were asked to evaluate egg aroma, yolk flavor, and overall acceptability in eggs from birds fed the lowest level of vitamin E with 0 or 10% flaxseed, and birds fed 20% flaxseed and 10 or 100 mg vitamin E/kg. The highest ratings for egg aroma, yolk flavor, and overall acceptability were for the control eggs. There was a significant reduction in overall acceptability as flaxseed concentration increased (P < 0.05) and an interesting and significant (P < 0.05) decline in overall acceptability for birds fed 100 vs 10 IU vitamin E/kg diet in eggs for birds fed 20% flaxseed. In a third study, there was an indication of preference for eggs from birds not fed flaxseed, when the diet contained 10, rather than 100 IU vitamin E/kg diet. These data suggest that high (> 10%) levels of flaxseed used in the bird's diet will result in some decrease in overall egg acceptability as assessed by aroma and flavor. These effects seem to be accentuated by using high levels of vitamin E in the bird's diet.  相似文献

Food-based approaches for controlling vitamin A deficiency and its consequences, such as increased mortality, more severe morbidity, and anemia, have become increasingly important, thus prompting a reassessment of the relation between vitamin A intake and status. A nutrition surveillance system in Central Java, Indonesia, assessed the vitamin A intake and serum retinol concentration of women with a child < or =24 mo old with a semiquantitative 24-h recall method that categorized vitamin A-containing foods into 3 categories of plant foods and into 2 categories of animal foods and identified portions as small, medium, or large. Median vitamin A intake was 335 retinol equivalents (RE)/d (n = 600) and vitamin A intake from plant foods was 8 times higher than from animal foods. Serum retinol concentration was related to vitamin A intake in a dose-response manner. The multiple logistic regression model for predicting the chance for a serum retinol concentration greater than the observed median (> or = 1.37 micromol/L) included physiologic factors, vitamin A intake from plant [odds ratio (95% CI) per quartile: 1st, 1.00: 2nd, 1.23 (0.75, 2.02); 3rd, 1.60 (0.97, 2.63); and 4th, 2.06 (1.25, 3.40)] and animal [1st and 2nd, 1.00; 3rd, 1.31 (0.86, 2.02); and 4th, 2.18 (1.40. 3.42)] foods, home gardening [(no, 1.00; yes, 1.71 (1.12, 2.60)], and woman's education level [< or =primary school, 1.00; > or =secondary school, 1.51 (1.02, 2.22)]. Despite the fact that plant foods contributed 8 times as much vitamin A as did animal foods, serum retinol concentrations did not reflect this large difference. Home gardening and woman's education level seemed to reflect longer-term consumption of vitamin A-rich plant and animal foods, respectively.  相似文献

Eggs enriched with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were produced by hens fed diets containing fish oil or a combination of fish and vegetable oils. In a sensory evaluation, 78 untrained volunteers could not distinguish between ordinary and enriched eggs. Storage life was also not significantly different between egg types. A food intake survey of 4 groups of 14 subjects each who consumed 7 eggs/wk for 24 wk showed that intakes of the major dietary components were not significantly different for 4 different egg types. Mean (n = 56) plasma cholesterol and triacylglycerol concentrations were not significantly different at the start and finish of the study. Body weight and HDL concentrations increased during the study (P < 0.05). For the last 2 wk of the experiment (weeks 23-24), mean egg consumption was increased from a total of 14 to a total of 21 eggs, resulting in a small increase in plasma triacylglycerols only. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in body weight, blood pressure, or plasma lipid components among treatment groups consuming the 4 different egg types. Blood samples taken after 16 and 22 wk from fasted subjects showed significant increases in eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, and total n-3 PUFAs in subjects consuming enriched eggs compared with controls. In addition, the ratio of n-6 to n-3 PUFAs in plasma was significantly reduced from 12.2:1 to 6.5-7.7:1 in subjects consuming enriched eggs compared with controls. Consumption of only one enriched egg daily can contribute substantially to the recommended daily intake of n-3 PUFAs.  相似文献

A rat model was used to investigate whether high oral doses of vitamin A lead to fetal malformations and to what extent retinyl esters (RES) are transferred from the mother to the fetuses. Retinol and RES concentrations in plasma behave similarly in rats and humans. When high concentrations of vitamin A are administered, plasma retinol concentrations remain relatively constant, whereas plasma RES increased in parallel with the dose. To achieve an elevation from approximately 150 to > 1525 nmol x L(-1) in the experimental group before mating, female Ibm: RORO (spf) rats were fed a maintenance diet enriched with 15.2 x 10(3) retinol equivalents (RE) x kg(-1) at the start and increased stepwise to 52.5 x 10(3) for a total of 8 mo. A parallel subgroup was maintained to measure progress in experimental rats without interference by blood taking. Rats of the control group received the basal diet analyzed to contain 4.5 x 10(3) RE x kg(-1). Before mating the mean body weights of experimental and control rats were not significantly different. All-trans, 13-cis, 4-oxo-all-trans and 5,6-epoxy-all-trans retinoic acid (RA) concentrations were determined in maternal and fetal plasma. With high vitamin A intake, 4-oxo- and 5,6-epoxy RA concentrations were significantly higher in the fetuses than in their mothers. Although these high intakes of vitamin A by the rat dams resulted in high maternal and fetal plasma concentrations of vitamin A and its metabolites, fetal malformations were not observed. This may be due to the fact that circulating RES are not teratogenic and that after crossing the placental barrier, they are stored mainly in fetal liver.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To determine the extent to which plasma antioxidant concentrations in people with habitual low intake of fruit and vegetables respond to increased intakes of these foods. To examine whether advice to increase fruit and vegetables will result in reduction of concentrations of total and low density lipoprotein cholesterol. DESIGN: Randomised controlled trial in which intervention and control groups were followed up for eight weeks. The intervention group was asked to consume eight servings of fruit and vegetables a day. SETTING: Dunedin, New Zealand. SUBJECTS: Eighty seven subjects with normal lipid concentrations who ate three or fewer servings of fruit and vegetables daily. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Plasma concentrations of vitamin C, retinol, alpha and beta carotene, alpha tocopherol, lipids, and lipoproteins. Dietary intake assessed with diet records over four days. RESULTS: The mean plasma vitamin C, alpha carotene, and beta carotene concentrations increased in parallel with increased dietary intake of fruit and vegetables in the intervention group. Concentrations of retinol, alpha tocopherol, lipids, and lipoproteins remained unchanged despite some increase in dietary vitamin E and a small reduction in saturated fat intake. CONCLUSIONS: Following a recommendation to increase fruit and vegetable consumption produces change in plasma concentrations of vitamin C, alpha carotene, and beta carotene likely to reduce incidence of cancer. More specific dietary advice to modify fat intake may be necessary to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease mediated by lipoprotein and vitamin E.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate dietary habits and nutrient intake of Finnish pregnant women, to relate these to the use of dietary supplements, and to explore possible dietary variations according to age and education. DESIGN: A random dietary survey using two five day estimated food records. SETTING: Pregnant women from 13 maternity clinics in the city of Oulu, Finland. SUBJECTS: One hundred and eighteen pregnant women in their third trimester. MAIN RESULTS: The main sources of energy were cereal products and milk products. The consumption of fish and poultry was low. Women with a higher educational level consumed more vegetables, fruit, fruit juices, and tea and less sausages, inner organs and coffee than women with a lower educational level. Younger women (< 25 y) consumed more sugar and pork and less berries, butter and inner organs than older women. On average 15% of the total energy was supplied by protein, 33% by fats, 52% by carbohydrates, and 12% by sucrose. Compared to the Nordic nutrition recommendations, the proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids and the intake of dietary fibre were low and the intake of sugar high. The intakes of vitamins and minerals met or exceeded the recommended allowances, except for vitamin D, folate, and iron. Of the subjects 70% used dietary supplements. With the exception of vitamin D, folate, and iron, both the supplement users and non-users had an adequate nutrient intake from their diet. CONCLUSIONS: A balanced diet covers the increased nutrient requirements during pregnancy, with the exception for vitamin D, folate, and iron. The use of dietary supplements during pregnancy is excessive and partly focused on the wrong nutrients. Young and less educated, and smoking pregnant women need more nutritional guidance.  相似文献

The occurrence of night blindness and serum vitamin A concentrations among children in rural Bangladesh were studied in relation to protein energy malnutrition, dietary habits and intake of vitamin A capsules. In 1992, 124 night-blind children were registered in a cross-sectional survey in the northern part of Bangladesh, and age-, sex- and neighbourhood-matched controls were selected. Of these, the first reported night-blind child from a household (n = 105) and their controls were included in the analyses. Our results showed that night blindness was associated with protein energy malnutrition when using the mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) as a measure of nutritional status. The odds ratio for a confirmed diagnosis of night blindness among children with a MUAC < 80% of the reference versus normal children was 5.4 (CI 1.9-15.5). Low MUAC was associated with low intake of beta-carotene-rich and vitamin A-containing foods as well as with low serum vitamin A in the total series of cases and controls. This may indicate that night blindness is only one aspect of the general protein energy malnutrition problems in this population. We therefore suggest that measures to prevent vitamin A-related morbidity and mortality should include improvement of the general diet with increased consumption of dietary vitamin A.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: It has been hypothesized that a high dietary intake of nitrosamines and their precursors, nitrites and nitrates, is a risk factor for brain tumors. Vitamins C and E inhibit the formation of nitrosamines and thus may be protective. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study of maternal diet and the risk of primitive neuroectodermal tumors of the brain in children. The case patients were under the age of six years at diagnosis in 1986 to 1989. The controls were selected by random-digit telephone dialing and were matched for age and race to 166 case patients. Telephone interviews with the mothers included questions on the frequency of consumption of alcohol, vitamin and mineral supplements, and 53 foods during pregnancy. RESULTS: Significant protective trends were observed for vegetables (odds ratio for the highest quartile group for intake relative to the lowest, 0.37; P for trend = 0.005), fruits and fruit juices (odds ratio, 0.28; P = 0.003), vitamin A (odds ratio, 0.59; P = 0.03), vitamin C (odds ratio, 0.42; P = 0.009), nitrate (odds ratio, 0.44; P = 0.002), and folate (odds ratio, 0.38; P = 0.005). A nonsignificant trend of increasing risk was observed for nitrosamine (odds ratio, 1.65; P = 0.15). The use of iron (odds ratio, 0.43; P = 0.004), calcium (odds ratio, 0.42; P = 0.05), and vitamin C (odds ratio, 0.35; P = 0.04) supplements at any time during the pregnancy and the use of multivitamins during the first six weeks (odds ratio, 0.56; P = 0.02) were associated with decreased risk. In multivariate analyses, folate, early multivitamin use, and iron supplements generally remained protective. CONCLUSIONS: These results do not support the hypothesis that nitrosamines have a role in the development of primitive neuroectodermal tumors in young children, but they do suggest that certain other aspects of maternal diet can influence the risk.  相似文献

Dietary patterns in 81 rural Nepali households with a 1-6-y-old child with a history of xerophthalmia were compared with dietary patterns of 81 households with an age-matched nonxerophthalmic control subject. Weekly food-frequency questionnaires were collected from case and control "focus" children, a younger sibling (if present), and the household 1-2 y after recruitment and treatment of cases. Control households and children were more likely than case households and children to consume vitamin A-rich foods during the monsoon (July-September) and major rice harvesting (October-December) seasons. Cases were less likely to consume preformed vitamin A-rich foods throughout the year [odds ratio (OR) = 1.2-4.5] with the strongest differences observed from October to December (OR = 2.0-4.2). Dietary risks were generally shared by younger siblings of cases, suggesting that infrequent intake of beta-carotene and preformed vitamin-A rich foods begins early in life and clusters among siblings within households, a pattern that is consistent with their higher risk of xerophthalmia and mortality. In developing countries where vitamin A deficiency is endemic, dietary counseling for children with xerophthalmia should be extended to their younger siblings. Moreover, dietary intake of preformed vitamin A may be as, or more, important as carotenoid-containing food consumption in protecting children and other members of households from vitamin A deficiency.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the relationship between fruit and vegetable consumption and the incidence of ischaemic heart disease. DESIGN: A meta-analysis of cohort studies of the relationship between ischaemic heart disease and markers of fruit and vegetable consumption, namely dietary intake of fruit, vegetables, carotenoids, vitamin C, fruit fibre and vegetable fibre, and serum concentration of carotenoids and vitamin C, adjusted for other risk factors. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Risk of ischaemic heart disease at the 90th centile of consumption relative to that at the 10th, equivalent to about a four-fold difference in fruit consumption and a doubling of vegetable consumption. RESULTS: The association with ischaemic heart disease was of similar magnitude for all six dietary markers of fruit and vegetable consumption. The median of the six estimates was that risk was 15% (range 12-19%) lower at the 90th centile of consumption than at the 10th. The estimates were generally adjusted for the possible confounding effect of other heart disease risk factors. The serum studies of vitamin C were consistent with this; those of carotenoids suggested a larger difference (43%) but were not adjusted for the important confounding effect of smoking. The substances in fruit and vegetables responsible for the protective effect on heart disease are uncertain but the effect is commensurate with the estimated protective effects of the potassium and folate in fruit and vegetables. Beta-carotene or vitamin E are not likely to be important because randomised trials of these vitamins in large doses have shown no reduction in heart disease mortality. CONCLUSIONS: The risk of ischaemic heart disease is about 15% lower at the 90th than the 1Oth centile of fruit and vegetable consumption.  相似文献

Mechanisms initiating autogenous egg development were studied using a selected strain of Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus (Skuse), that required a sugar meal to develop eggs autogenously. Caloric intake and the abdominal distention produced by ingesting sucrose solutions were interrelated in their effects on autogeny. Distention of the abdomen with 2 microliters of saline, with no caloric intake, induced autogenous egg maturation in 66% of the females. Abdominal distention produced by 2 microliters of saline did not induce egg development if the ventral nerve cord was transected. However, eggs were produced when females ingested 200 micrograms of sucrose in 2 microliters of water following ventral nerve cord transection. A meal containing at least 100 micrograms of sucrose was required for egg development if abdominal distention was < 1 microliter. Mating influenced autogeny in only 10% of the population. Neither distention, caloric intake nor mating affected the number of eggs that matured.  相似文献

Lead and cadmium contents were determined in nationally representative samples of low-fat milk, cheese and eggs consumed in Finland. Nationally representative samples of milk and cheese were collected from dairies. Egg samples were collected from the major distributors. Samples of imported cheese and egg products collected in surveillance studies were analysed, together with domestic samples. Lead and cadmium were determined by GFAAS after wet digestion in conc. HNO3. In lead determinations of milk and cheese platinum was employed as the matrix modifier and NH4H2PO4 was employed for the lead determinations of eggs and in all cadmium determinations. Mean lead content was 1.7 micrograms/kg in milk, 17 micrograms/kg in Finnish cheese, 17-60 micrograms/kg in imported cheese, 1 microgram/kg in eggs and 6-72 micrograms/kg in imported dry egg products. Although Finnish consumption in milk, cheese and eggs is high the dietary intake of lead and cadmium from these sources is very low compared with the tolerance limits.  相似文献

Concern has been expressed that high dietary concentrations of non-milk extrinsic sugars (NMES) may potentially compromise nutrient intakes in population groups with low energy intakes (Department of Health, 1991). The objective of the present study was to examine data from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey of Children Aged 1.5 to 4.5 years (Gregory et al. 1995) for evidence of an inverse association between energy from NMES and micronutrient intakes, and if possible to quantify a level of NMES-energy at which micronutrient intakes may, theoretically, be compromised. Energy and nutrient intakes were compared across quintiles of NMES-energy for boys (n 848) and girls (n 827). As the concentration of NMES increased, energy intake rose (in boys only) while percentage energy from fat fell from 40 to 32% across quintiles 1 to 5. Intakes of most micronutrients also fell, while intakes of vitamin C rose. Mean intakes of most micronutrients (Ca, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate and vitamin C) were adequate in comparison with dietary reference values. However, intakes of Fe, Zn and vitamin D were low at all levels of NMES-energy and fell below the estimated average requirement for Fe and Zn for NMES concentrations exceeding 24% of energy. Lower Intakes of milk, meat, bread and vegetables, and higher intakes of fruit juice largely explain the observed trends in micronutrient intake. It is concluded that the inverse association of NMES with micronutrient intakes is of most significance for the 20% of children with diets highest in NMES. However, further work is required to establish whether the associations observed have biological significance with regard to micronutrient status.  相似文献

The aim of the survey was to record the food habits and nutrient intake of Greek children. Data was obtained by a 3 d household measured diet record from a random stratified sample (1936 children aged 2-14 y). Mean daily protein intake was much higher than PRI and none of the children had lower intake than AR. Mean energy intake from protein was 15%, carbohydrate 44% and fat 41%. Eighty-four percent of children had energy intake from fat higher than the AR. Saturated fatty acids (SFA) provided approximately 15%, monounsaturated (MUFA) 17% and polyunsaturated (PUFA) 6% of energy. Eighty-seven percent of children had higher intake of SFA than the AR. Six percent of children had SFA intake lower than the AR and 50% higher than the AR. None of the children had PUFA intake lower than PRI and 0.3% higher than the maximum limit. 4.2% of children had calcium intake lower than LTI and 88% higher or equal to PRI. All children had phosphorus intake higher than PRI and less than the lower safe ratio of Ca/P; 50% of them had P intake higher than 1.5 g/d. The majority of children had sufficient iron intake with the exception of menstruated girls. Mean vitamin A intake was higher than PRI and lower than the toxic levels. All children had vitamin C intake higher than LTI. Median vitamin D intake varied from 1.7-2.1 micrograms. Median energy intake was higher than the AR in preschool children, but lower in the older children. We conclude that Greek children do not underintake energy and protein, overintake SFA, have safe intake of PUFA, vitamin A and C and high intake of MUFA, underintake carbohydrates, have adequate Ca, but a considerably high P intake. Vitamin D is low in small children, but the biological available vitamin D is obviously higher due to sunlight.  相似文献

An international case-control study of primary pediatric brain tumors included interviews with mothers of cases diagnosed from 1976-1994 and mothers of population controls. Data are available on maternal vitamin use during pregnancy for 1051 cases and for 1919 controls in eight geographic areas of North America, Europe and Israel. While risk estimates varied by study center, combined results suggest that maternal supplementation for two trimesters may decrease risk of brain tumor [odds ratio (OR)=0.7; 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.5-0.9], with a trend toward less risk with longer duration of use (P trend= 0.0007). The greatest risk reduction was among children diagnosed under 5 years of age whose mothers used supplements during all three trimesters (OR=0.5; CI=0.3- 0.8). This effect did not vary by histology and was seen for supplementation during pregnancy rather than during the month before pregnancy or while breast feeding. These findings are largely driven by data from the US, where most mothers took vitamins. The proportion of control mothers who took vitamins during pregnancy varied tremendously, from 3% in Israel and in France through 21% in Italy, 33% in Canada, 52% in Spain to 86-92% at the three US centers. The composition of the various multivitamin compounds taken also varied: daily dose of vitamin C ranged from 0 up to 600 mg; vitamin E from 0 to 70 mg; vitamin A from 0 to 30,000 IU and folate from 0 to 2000 mg. Mothers also took individual micronutrient supplements (e.g., vitamin C tablets), but most mothers who took these also took multivitamins, making it impossible to determine potential independent effects of these micronutrients.  相似文献

In a study of urban slum school children (276 boys and 231 girls), in Ujung Pandang, Indonesia, parasitological and anthropometric exams were cross-sectionally performed to assess prevalence and intensity of helminth infections and nutritional status. Prevalence of Ascaris, Trichuris and hookworm was 92%, 98%, and 1.4%, respectively. 91% children had both Ascaris and Trichuris infections. About half of the Ascaris- and Trichuris-infected children (46% and 58%, respectively) had moderate infections. Stunting was seen in 55% of the children, while wasting was observed in 10%. Boys had lower nutritional status than girls (p < 0.001), based on weight-for-age (WA) and height-for-age (HA) Z-scores. Age had an inverse relationship with WA and HA Z-scores (p < 0.0004). A relationship between helminth infections and nutritional status was observed between log Trichuris egg count and WA and HA Z-scores after controlling for age, sex, and log Ascaris egg count (p = 0.048 for HA Z-score, and p = 0.058 for WA Z-score). The relationship was also found when Trichuris infection was categorized into mild, moderate, and severe infections (p = 0.017 and p = 0.001 for HA and WA Z-scores, respectively). Scheffe's test for multiple mean comparisons showed that Trichuris-infected children with above 1,000 eggs per gram feces had significantly lower nutritional status than lower epg or non-infected children (p < 0.001 and p < 0.05 for HA and WA Z-scores respectively).  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare developmental markers and dietary intake of infants born to lower socioeconomic adolescent and adult mothers. DESIGN: Sixty-one adolescent (age 14-18 years) and 60 adult (age 22-28 years) mothers met inclusion criteria of comparable socioeconomic status, age range, urban/rural residence, and distribution of infants by gender. SAMPLE/SETTING: Adolescent subjects were recruited in last trimester and adult mothers postpartum. Interviews were conducted when infants were about 6 and 12 months of age. Data included age of occurrence for eight markers, age at adding complementary foods, two 24-h dietary recalls, and two measurements of growth. RESULTS: Adolescent mothers reported a significantly earlier age at which the infant "holds a spoon by self" and "drinks alone from a trainer cup." Six other markers were not significantly different between groups. Adolescent mothers fed cereal significantly earlier than did adult mothers, but there were no significant differences for fruit, vegetables, and meat. At 12 months, infants of adolescents had intakes of vitamin D and iron which were < 100% of recommended allowances, as did infants of adult mothers for vitamin D, iron, and zinc. Dietary fat was significantly higher at 6 and 12 months and vitamin C was lower at 12 months for infants of adolescents compared to the adult group. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to adult mothers, adolescent mothers reported earlier mean ages for developmental markers related to self-feeding, and introduced cereal earlier. In each group, selected nutrient intakes decreased from recommended amounts in the 6-12-month period. Fat intakes were significantly different between groups at 6 and 12 months.  相似文献
