The growth of bottlenose dolphins is described from observations made during a capture release programme that has operated in coastal waters of the eastern Gulf of Mexico from 1970 to the present. Measurements of standard length, girth and body mass were recorded from 47 female and 49 male dolphins, some captured as many as nine times. Ages were known from approximate birth dates or estimated from counts of dentinal growth layers. In all three measurements. females grew at a faster initial rate than males, but reached asymptotic size at an earlier age. This extended period of growth in males resulted in significant sexual dimorphism in length, girth and mass at physical maturity. The growth of both sexes was well described by three-parameter Gompertz models using either cross-sectional data or a mixture of longitudinal and cross-sectional data. There was considerable variation in size-at-age for both sexes in all year classes. Residuals of size measurements were used to derive measures of relative size for individual dolphins; most dolphins demonstrated little ontogenetic change in relative size. Body mass was adequately predicted by multiple regression equations that incorporated both length and girth as independent variables.  相似文献

(1) The pattern of absolute atid relative gonad growth during the life-span and the seasonal gotiad cycle were determined from monthly samples of chub taken from two tributaries of the Herefordshire Wye. (2) A marked change in the pattern of absolute gonad growth was thought to indicate the attainment of sexual maturity. This was found to occur synchronously with corresponding changes in the pattern of body growth described previously and was in agreement with the age at which a seasonal gonad cycle was detectable. (3) Sexual maturity was attained during the eighth year of life (7+) in female chub and in males from the Afon Llynfi, but most males from the River Lugg matured a year earlier. (4) The chub gonads continued to increase in relative size after the attainment of sexual maturity. This was more evident in female chub. (5) Seasonal changes in the gonad condition and weight were followed. Gonad maturation occurred during spring and the gonad mass increased rapidly just prior to spawning. The results of the investigations of spatial and vertical distribution of Pacific sleeper shark Somniosus pacificus in the North Pacific Ocean conducted for many years are presented. In addition, the size distribution and features of biology of the species are studied. The largest abundance of the species is registered in the Bering Sea, western Gulf of Alaska, eastern Aleutian Islands, and Pacific waters of northern Kuril Islands and southeastern Kamchatka. The species is the most abundant near the bottom at the depth from 200 to 700 m and in the pelagic waters at a depth of 100–200 m. The average depths of the catches of Pacific sleeper shark substantially change over the year reaching minimum values in June and maximum values in December. Vertical daily migrations (to the water column at night and to the bottom during the day) are registered. The catches are represented by fish 26–352 cm in length, and sharks 100–200 cm in length prevail. The males are noticeably smaller than the females. In general, condition of the fishes decreases and feeding intensity increases with growth. Food composition substantially changes with the increase of body length: consumption of squids decreases and consumption of crustaceans, fishes, and fishery wastes increases. Males of dimorphic species often show ornaments that are thought to have evolved through female choice or/and male–male competition. The sexual differentiation of similar morphologies occurs during ontogeny, resulting in differential sex and age-specific selection. The Long-tailed Manakin is a dimorphic species with a highly skewed mating system, the males of which delay plumage maturation over 3 to 4 years. We describe ontogenetic changes in feather morphology in this species through sexual maturity. Males showed a significant increase in length of the central rectrices with age, hence their degree of sexual dimorphism increased from zero in 1-year-old males to 189.5% in adults. In contrast, male tail length decreased with age. Wing length did not vary significantly with age, but females had relatively longer wings than males. Wing loading was greater in females and decreased with age in males. In adults, rectrix length was positively correlated with testis volume, supporting the hypothesis that secondary sexual characters can signal the condition of primary sexual characters. Rectrix length showed positive allometry with body size in males less than 4 years old, whereas older males showed negative allometry and females showed isometry. Wing area and wing loading shifted from negative to positive allometry in males of 2 to 3 years of age. Changes in male morphology during ontogeny in the Long-tailed Manakin appeared to be associated with their specific display behaviours. Age-related changes in allometric growth of rectrices in the Long-tailed Manakin suggested that young males invest disproportionately more in the length of this trait relative to their body size. This investment could act as a signal of competitive ability to move status position in their orderly queue.  相似文献

Metapenaeopsis sibogae inhabits the South Pacific and Southeast Asia and is an emerging fisheries resource. However, studies on the population biology of M. sibogae are scant, and their morphometric relationships have not been examined. Thus, we studied the relative growth of M. sibogae, hypothesizing that its morphological sexual maturity can be estimated based on abrupt shifts in allometry. The relationships of body length (BL) and body weight (BW) with carapace length (CL) were determined by the least squares method. Data for each sex were repeatedly partitioned into two size-delimited subsets (early and late phases), considering a CL value as a hypothesized transition point. Analysis of the sum of squared residuals indicated that two separate linear BL/CL models fit the data better than a single linear model showing clear transition points in both males (13.2 mm CL) and females (15.0 mm CL). The changes in allometry in the BL/CL relationships between early- and late-phased males and females were indicated by a 20.5 and 21.5% decrease in the slope, respectively. These transition points could be associated with sexual maturity. The growth rate of BW vs. CL slowed significantly after morphological sexual maturity was reached in both sexes, demonstrating the existence of dimorphic growth.  相似文献

Developmental and reproductive parameters and their relationships were studied in the marine isopod Idotea linearis. We hypothesized that (1) the temporal patterns of molting and growth undergo complex and sex-specific changes with age as well as with the onset of sexual maturation, and that (2) sexual maturation (and dependent parameters) is controlled by the photoperiod. Both males and females were singly cultured in the laboratory at two alternative photoperiods (constant long and short days, respectively) from hatching until death. Males molted and grew throughout their life, showing a steady increase in stage duration and body size with each molt. Females, in contrast, showed much more complex modifications in molt chronology due to reproductive demands. There was some variability in the stage number, when females reached maturity. Reaching maturity early in the succession of molts was associated with smaller body size at maturity, smaller size of broods, but higher average number of broods per lifetime. Post-puberty molts in females occurred without further growth, and successive broods did not differ in size. The photoperiod strongly affected sexual maturation (and thus in turn molting and growth patterns) in females, while males remained completely unaffected by the photo regime.  相似文献

The size at maturity was studied in the crab Aegla uruguayana from the Areco River (31°14′ S, 59°28′ W), Argentina. Size at sexual maturity was determined according to three criteria: morphometric (change in the relative growth of reproductive characters), histological (first maturation of gonads) and functional (capability to mate and carry eggs). Regarding females, morphometric maturity occurred at a carapace length (CL) of 11.50 mm, considering abdomen width as a reproductive character. Gonad maturity of females could be observed at a minimum size ranging from 15 to 17 mm CL. The smallest ovigerous female observed in the field was 15.60 mm CL, although a relevant population incidence of ovigerous females (86.6%) has just been observed at values higher than 17 mm CL. As for males, the relative growth of the left chela length changed at a value of 15.40 mm CL, while morphological changes in sexual tube occurred between CL of 14 and 16 mm. Testicular maturation occurred at a CL ranging from 17 to 19 mm. The smallest size of males having spermatozoids in their vasa deferentia was 18.70 mm CL. The results obtained indicated that, in both sexes, functional maturity occurred after morphometric maturity and at a size similar to that of gonad maturity. Comparing sexes, females acquired sexual maturity (morphometric, gonad and functional maturity) at sizes statistically smaller than those of males.  相似文献

In crustaceans, successful reproductive processes, such as the transition from juvenile to adult, exhibit important morphological changes that can be detected by analyzing relative growth. This study describes the relative growth of body structures in Nematopalaemon schmitti and its secondary sexual characteristics, and also estimates the morphological sexual maturity of this species in a region influenced by upwelling. The carapace length (CL), second pleuron length (PlL), cheliped carpus length (CaL), cheliped propodus length (PrL) and the length of appendix masculina (AML) of the shrimp were measured. The relationships that best demonstrated the changes in allometric coefficient between demographic categories were AML vs. CL for males, and PlL vs. CL for females. The estimated CL for morphological sexual maturity in males was 8.51 mm and 9.30 in females. Our results showed the appendix masculine and the second pleuron were secondary sexual characteristics that play roles in reaching the morphological sexual maturity necessary for reproductive success and to assure the life cycle of this species.  相似文献

Quantifying demographic parameters and variable vital rates, such as somatic growth rates, time to maturity, and reproductive longevity, is important for effective management of threatened and endangered populations such as sea turtles (Cheloniidae). To address these knowledge gaps, we applied skeletochronology to analyze and compare somatic growth rates and variation in life-history traits such as age and size at sexual maturity for 65 green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the eastern Pacific Ocean (EP), along the west coast of the United States; turtles belonged to ≥2 nesting subpopulations that differed in body size (mean nesting size). Green turtles in the EP spend approximately 5 years in the oceanic stage before recruiting to nearshore habitats, males may be smaller and younger than females at maturation (x̅ = 17.7 ± 5.5 yr vs. 28.0 ± 8.2 yr), and younger age at sexual maturity was associated with smaller size at sexual maturity, suggesting that mean nesting body size may be reflective of maturation timing for subpopulations. Smaller body sizes for females nesting at Michoacán, Mexico (continental) rookeries, yielded a younger predicted age at sexual maturity (x̅ = ~17 yr) compared to females from Revillagigedo Islands, Mexico rookeries, which displayed larger body sizes and older age at sexual maturity (x̅ = ~30 yr). We consider possible mechanisms driving the observed divergence in life-history traits, including the possibility that earlier maturation (reduced generation length) for turtles in the Michoacán nesting subpopulation may be a response to intense harvesting in the past 50 years, and consideration of such anthropogenic impacts is warranted by population managers. Finally, our results indicate green turtles moved into nearshore neritic habitats at a young age (4–6 yr), emphasize the importance of protecting neritic habitats along the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexican coasts, and encourage the incorporation of variable maturation time in population recovery assessments.  相似文献

Protein malnutrition leads to growth retardation that can be reversed through catch‐up growth, once normative nutrition is restored. Because growth is a dynamic process, catch‐up capacity is likely influenced by the maturity of the animal and/or the duration of the insult, in addition to the type of insult experienced. We compared length of malnutrition, sexual dimorphism, body mass, and skeletal growth. Eighty Rattus norvegicus were divided into 10 treatment groups (five diets; male and female) and followed for more than 1 year. At weaning, animals were placed on either a control or low‐protein isocaloric diet. Three experimental groups were switched to the control diet at 40, 60, or 90 days. Beginning with 21 days of age, animals were weighed daily and radiographed throughout the study. To determine the presence of catch‐up growth, growth rates (GRs) were calculated (linear regression) for 20‐day time spans before and after diet changes and compared among treatment groups. Targeted growth was measured as final size or as the coefficient of variation with age. These results show that 1) protein‐restricted animals experience catch‐up growth with dietary rehabilitation; 2) for females, catch‐up GRs are proportional to GRs in control animals at the same age as the timing of dietary rehabilitation but not for males; and 3) targeted growth was observed in some, but not all, aspects of anatomy. The length of the tibia and humerus was indistinguishable from controls, regardless of length of malnutrition or gender, whereas the ulna and male body mass exceeded control sizes. Although most measures decreased in variation with ontogeny, the tibia failed to do so. These results support a complex biological regulation of catch‐up and targeted growth. The implications for selection are that flexible and responsive developmental trajectories may have an advantage over those programed into a single size. J. Age at first reproduction is an extremely important life-historytrait. Several factors such as nutritional state and age-specificfecundity have been shown to influence time to sexual maturity;however, little work has been done in insects. We addressedthis in a stalk-eyed fly (Cyrtodiopsis dalmanni), by testingthe hypothesis that time to sexual maturity is associated withthe development of male internal reproductive structures. Wefound that sexual maturity was attained after an increased rateof growth in the accessory glands, several days after maturesperm bundles, and motile sperm were observed in the testes.Although testis development is essential, the results suggestthat accessory gland growth is more closely associated withthe time taken to reach sexual maturity than is testis growth.When we manipulated the growth of testes and accessory glandsvia a dietary manipulation, we found that delayed growth ratesincreased the time taken to reach sexual maturity. Among thedelayed individuals, sexually mature males had larger accessoryglands, but not testes, than did immature males. In adult males,mating frequency was significantly positively correlated withaccessory gland size, but not with testis length or body size.We conclude that accessory gland size is a critical determinantof sexual maturity and male mating frequency in this species.  相似文献

Risso's dolphins (Grampus griseus) are widely distributed throughout temperate to tropical pelagic waters of the world and are one of the most frequently encountered cetaceans in eastern Taiwanese coastal waters. Because their life history is poorly known, the goal of this study was to investigate the relationship between age, body length, and sexual maturity of Risso's dolphins in Taiwanese waters. Ninety‐two carcasses of dead‐stranded or fisheries bycaught dolphins (1994–2008) were measured and dissected (total body length, TBL 125–290 cm); sexual maturity was assessed in 33 dolphins; and age was estimated by counting dentinal growth layer groups in routine histologically prepared tooth sections of 28 dolphins. Sexual dimorphism in TBL was not detected. The onset of sexual maturity occurred at 240–255 cm in females and 253–265 cm in males, which was at about 10 yr of age for both sexes. Our stranding, bycatch, and previous boat survey records suggest that Risso's dolphins occur year‐round and likely have a summer‐fall calving season in Taiwanese waters. The similar life history parameters and calving season in dolphins from Taiwanese and Japanese waters suggest a common population in the northwest Pacific, which has a noticeably shorter body length than in other regions.  相似文献

The size distribution, length–weight relationship and size at the onset of sexual maturity of the orange mud crab (Scylla olivacea) from four geographically distinct locations (Taiping, Setiu, Kota Marudu and Lundu) representing Malaysian waters were analysed and estimated. Scylla olivacea was found in the size range of 47–134?mm carapace width. Males were significantly smaller in size but heavier than females. Geographical variation in carapace width and body weight were significant, but no interaction was found between sexes and locations. As shown by the length–weight relationships of S. olivacea, the males exhibited positive growth allometry whereas the females exhibited negative growth allometry. Males mature physiologically prior to attaining morphometric sexual maturity. Females, however, achieve physiological and morphometric sexual maturity in synchrony. No significant variation was found in the estimates of size at the onset of sexual maturity of males and females among different locations. We recommend the use of the third right walking leg merus length and carapace width to estimate the size at the onset of sexual maturity (morphometric maturity) for S. olivacea. Data obtained in this study serve as important baseline data for future mud crab resource management in Malaysia and were used to recommend minimum landing sizes for S. olivacea in each respective location based on the largest size at the onset of sexual maturity estimates were suggested.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to characterize the population biology (sex ratio, size structure, relative growth of reproductive characters and realised fecundity) of the crab Microphrys bicornutusfrom Isla Margarita, Venezuela. Nearly 100 crabs were collected and fixed monthly during 1998. In the laboratory, crabs were sexed and measured: maximum carapace length, chelae length, chelae and abdomen width for females and first pleopod length for males. Additionally, 96 ovigerous females were collected to determine fecundity. The following measurements were taken for each female: body wet weight (BWW), body dry weight (BDW), egg wet weight (EWW), egg dry weight (EDW) and number of eggs (NE). The following determinations were made: relative fecundity (RF) = NE/BDW and reproductive output (RO) = (EDW/ BDW) × 100. Relative size at the onset of maturity (RSOM) was calculated as minimum ovigerous female/female's maximum size. The results indicate that the sex ratio is nearly 1:1 during the entire year. Ovigerous females and moulted males and females were observed throughout the year. Size frequency distribution and size at the onset of sexual maturity, estimated by relative growth of the sexual secondary characters and RSOM value, differed from those estimated in studies done in Jamaica and Buchuaco, Venezuela.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the relative growth and onset of morphological sexual maturity of the freshwater crab Sylviocarcinus pictus. Specimens were collected every month from October 2013 to September 2014, at night, on a stretch of the river Guaribas, Piauí, Brazil. Crabs were sexed and their carapace width (CW, independent variable), carapace length (CL), cheliped propodus length (PL) and height (PH), gonopod length (GL), and abdomen width (AW) (dependent variables) were measured. These measurements were related to characterise relative growth and possible sex differences. On average males were larger than females (p = 0.0001). Size at the onset of morphological sexual maturity was defined by relating CL vs. PL for males (30.82 mm) and CL vs. AW for females (28.63 mm). These are considered secondary sexual characters and reflect initial size at morphological sexual maturity with greater precision. The differential cheliped growth of males may be related to courting and disputes with other males, while the allometric growth of the abdomen of females indicates increased probability of reproductive success.  相似文献

Roughhead grenadier Macrourus berglax were collected during the Flemish Cap bottom survey (1991–2001, NAFO division 3M, depth of 200–720 m) and on commercial vessels (1998–2000, NAFO divisions 3L, M and N, depth of 700–1700 m). The abundance of roughhead grenadier, as well as their average size, increased with depth. Age and length composition of the catches showed clear differences between the sexes. The proportion of males in the catch declined in the larger length classes and there were no males in the largest length classes (25 cm). There were differences in the growth trajectories of the two sexes; both sexes grew similarly up to 9 years, but the male growth was slower thereafter. The pre-anal fin length at first maturity ( L PA50) for roughhead grenadier females was 28·5 cm, whilst the age at 50% maturity was 15–16 years. Individual total fecundity varied between 8522 and 61 844 oocytes. Macrourus berglax had a prolonged life cycle and multi-aged population structure, with differences in growth and mortality between males and females, slow maturation and low fecundity.  相似文献

Ontogenetic changes in morphometric and reproductive indices were studied using 166 individuals of the arctic gonatid squid Gonatus fabricii (7.3–322 mm pen length) collected in the southern part of the Norwegian Sea. Body proportions and consistency of the mantle and fins did not change in maturing and mature males. In contrast, during maturation the females first lost their tentacles, then the horny rings of their 4th arm suckers, and the muscular part of their body turned watery and gelatinous. Unlike most squid, G. fabricii females start mating at maturity stage III, and all but one female at stage IV had mated, as well as all spent females. Females had high values of both gonadosomatic index and maturity indices compared to those of the North Pacific gonatids, whereas gonadosomatic index values of males were low, probably due to slow functioning of both testis and spermatophoric gland, and long accumulation of spermatophores in the Needham's sac. It is suggested that the breakdown of female body tissues is an adaptation for a deepwater bathypelagic “brooding” of the negatively buoyant egg-mass caused by the high specific density of the secretion from the nidamental glands in gonatids. Female-biased sexual size dimorphism is uncommon among vertebrates and traditionally has been attributed to asymmetric selective pressures favoring large fecund females (the fecundity-advantage hypothesis) and/or small mobile males (the small-male advantage hypothesis). I use a phylogenetically based comparative method to address these hypotheses for the evolution and maintenance of sexual size dimorphism among populations of three closely related lizard species (Phrynosoma douglasi, P. ditmarsi, and P. hernandezi). With independent contrasts I estimate evolutionary correlations among female body size, male body size, and sexual size dimorphism (SSD) to determine whether males have become small, females have become large, or both sexes have diverged concurrently in body size during the evolutionary Xhistory of this group. Population differences in degree of SSD are inversely correlated with average male body size, but are not correlated with average female body size. Thus, variation in SSD among populations has occurred predominantly through changes in male size, suggesting that selective pressures on small males may affect degree of SSD in this group. I explore three possible evolutionary mechanisms by which the mean male body size in a population could evolve: changes in size at maturity, changes in the variance of male body sizes, and changes in skewness of male body size distributions. Comparative analyses indicate that population differentiation in male body size is achieved by changes in male size at maturity, without changes in the variance or skewness of male and female size distributions. This study demonstrates the potential of comparative methods at lower taxonomic levels (among populations and closely related species) for studying microevolutionary processes that underlie population differentiation.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the painted sweetlips Diagramma pictum was determined from 487 individuals collected between January and December 2010 in the southern Arabian Gulf. There was no evidence of sex change and the combination of histological results with the sex composition of the size and age structures indicated a gonochoristic sexual pattern. There were peaks in gonado-somatic indices for females in March and October with spawning occurring during two seasons (April to May and November). The mean size and age at sexual maturity (L(m50) and A(m50) ) were 35·7 cm fork length (L(F) ) and 2·9 years for females and 26·7 cm L(F) and 0·5 years for males. The maximum recorded age (11 years) and small mean size and young age at sexual maturity for males may be a direct result of intensive demersal fishing in the southern Arabian Gulf. There was an exponential increase in the cumulative reproductive potential with size and a linear increase with age for both sexes. The mean L(F) (L(c50) ) at which D. pictum became vulnerable to capture was 33·3 cm, which corresponded to only 3 and 7% of the cumulative reproductive potential of males and females, respectively. Size-specific and age-specific reproductive potential indicated that conventional regulations that equate the mean size at first capture to sexual maturation are unsuitable for the management of D. pictum.  相似文献
