Brief Analysis on Sexism in English Language

English language,to some extent,reflects a sexist society.Linguistic directions of degrading and devaluing female can be located everywhere.This paper tries to investigate linguistic sexism against women in English words.The purpose is to disclose some of the features of English language that suggest cultural biases and socially unjust attitudes towards women.The study will help us to have a better understanding of the relationship between language and society.     

Justification of Chinese Shi as a Copula ＆ English Copular Sentences under Cross Linguistic Influence

Second language acquisition is a broad topic.Therefore,I narrow it into those of cross linguistic influence.I choose copular usage for my focus of study because both Mandarin Chinese and English share this grammatical morpheme.To what extent do Copulas behave similarly between languages？ This facilitates positive transfer of the first language（L1） features into the second language（L2） as Eric Kellerman（1986） observed that learners have intuitions about which language features they can transfer from their first language to the target language and which are less likely to be transferable.He further proposed that learners have a sense of what features in their L1 are in some way basic.They are more prepared to risk transferring such features than they are those they perceive to be unique to their own language.The copula is a very basic grammatical morpheme as it carries most conjugated forms.Therefore,in this dissertation,I am going to examine how Chinese Shi functions as an English copula and how it influences copular sentences in English writing.     

The asymmetric phenomena in Chinese and English——in the Chinese and English version Journey to the West

During the reading of Journey to the West by Wu Cheng′en (English version) translated by W.J.F.jenner,The author noticed that Jenner translated some Chinese words such as"泼猴","贤兄""贤兄"ect.flexibly as well as marvelously and appropriately according to different context,which in fact is loyal to the original language,at the same time corresponds to characteristics of English language.The Asymmetric Phenomena of forms and meanings in Chinese and English will have some implication for second language learning,but what? Preliminarily exploration was done in this paper.     

Singlish,A Handicap or A Facilitator

Singapore is a multi-cultural and multi-lingual society with four different major languages （Chinese,English,Malay and Tamil）. Each language or dialect exerts its influence on the way English is spoken. It is too difficult to maintain the purity of English. English spoken in Singapore would branch into various types of Englishes and produce less universal forms,and people would inevitably encounter a lack of communication in English,which has been becoming more and more international.Different groups of English users and their reaction to various forms of Englishes determine the range of Englishes and produce a norm preventing varieties of English which are incomprehensible to others.     

Semiotic Proposition for Understanding Semantics Within Construction Documents

This research develops a methodology that helps actors in understanding information generated from multiple construction participants. It employs semiotic theory which approaches the interpreter’s understanding of the role of the representations used in construction documents to communicate meanings to other participants. This strategy is designed to aid the interpreters’ comprehension of the use of symbols. The symbols within the construction documents are forms of representations that take the form of a visual representation of a set of markers that describe a formal language, and of markers that are used to represent natural language as well as other possible representations, such as a collection of codes for indexing documents. Symbols are replaced by signs under the semiotics theory. The use of symbols as signs is this study’s recognition of the relationship between the interpreter and the material quality of symbols. The semiotic analysis is an examination of the compromise between the meanings of a representation per se and the concept associated with the understanding of such representation.     

Features of Women's language

Language is a means of verbal communication. People use language to communicate with each other. In the society, no two speakers are exactly alike in the way of speaking. Some differences are due to age, gender, statue and personality. Above all, gender is one of the obvious reasons. The writer of this paper tries to describe the features of women＇s language from these perspectives： pronunciation, intonation, diction, subjects, grammar and discourse. From the discussion of the features of women＇s language, more attention should be paid to language use in social context. What＇s more, the linguistic phenomena in a speaking community can be understood more thoroughly.

This paper is to explore and analyze the representations of women in Hollywood action films-Kill Bill and Charlie’s Angels.In the former Hollywood action films such as 007,women are often depicted as a foil or assistant to the leading actors.What have been emphasized is their appearance and body;they depend on men and they need to be protected by men.However,in Kill Bill and Charlie’s Angels,women appear to be the leading roles.They become physically strong and they are able to defeat men.However,the women images in these films are still designed to meet the men’s standard,to satisfy their sexual desire towards women,and to reflect their male domination.Part I is a brief introduction of the women images in former action films and offers the thesis statement.Part II concentrates on the marginalized and specialized women images,which provide pleasant sensation to male audiences.Part III is about the male domination reflected in these mentioned films.Part IV focuses on the cinematic ways of shooting used in these films and how the women bodies are exposed in front of the audiences by using these means of shooting.Part V is the conclusion of this paper.     

Communication Styles and Business English Teaching

Performance and Reasons of Sexism in the English Language

Sexism originally was coined to refer to ideas and practices that downgrade women,relative to men.Nowadays it seems to appear a "gender neutral" definition of sexism,which refers to ideas,and practices that treat either sex "unfairly",or even just differently.On this definition,sexist language might not mean only expressions that exclude,insult or trivialize women,but also those that do the same thing to men.

A Streetcar Named Desire is a tragedy.Blanche,a beautiful woman,finally goes insane.She has an indecent past.She tells lies and is indulgent in her behavior toward men.All these seem to suggest that she deserves such a consequence.However,the fact is that Blanche once was a pure girl who dreamed of true love and happy family.It is the cruel reality that results in her tragedy.Compared with her,Stella's tragedy is a tragedy of toleration.Unlike Blanche,Stella prefers to tolerate when confronting with the reality.The tragedy of Blanche and Stella is typical of the time in which women cannot enjoy the same rights as men.     

Time perception of emotional events

This study investigates whether the accuracy of time perception is influenced by the nature of emotional events and whether time perception has gender differences. Subjects were asked to control the presenting time of pictures of affective facial expressions and to match it with a pre-specified time range. Results showed that (1) compared with the neutral condition, subjects tended to underestimate the time for angry expressions and to overestimate the time for happy expressions; (2) women overestimated the time range much more than men for all the three types of expressions; (3) the size of overestimation steadily decreased over time ranges (0.5—6 sec), and the influence by the affective expressions was observed only at the short time ranges (0.5—2 sec.). These results suggest that time perception of emotional events is varied with emotional valence, and women tend to overestimate all the emotional events.
