Average Growth of the Spectral Function on a Riemannian Manifold

We study average growth of the spectral function of the Laplacian on a Riemannian manifold. Two types of averaging are considered: with respect to the spectral parameter and with respect to a point on a manifold. We obtain as well related estimates of the growth of the pointwise ζ-function along vertical lines in the complex plane. Some examples and open problems regarding almost periodic properties of the spectral function are also discussed.

The Sharp Lower Bound of the First Eigenvalue of the Sub-Laplacian on a Quaternionic Contact Manifold

The main technical result of the paper is a Bochner type formula for the sub-Laplacian on a quaternionic contact manifold. With the help of this formula we establish a version of Lichnerowicz’s theorem giving a lower bound of the eigenvalues of the sub-Laplacian under a lower bound on the Sp(n)Sp(1) components of the qc-Ricci curvature. It is shown that in the case of a 3-Sasakian manifold the lower bound is reached iff the quaternionic contact manifold is a round 3-Sasakian sphere. Another goal of the paper is to establish a priori estimates for square integrals of horizontal derivatives of smooth compactly supported functions. As an application, we prove a sharp inequality bounding the horizontal Hessian of a function by its sub-Laplacian on the quaternionic Heisenberg group.     

A Neumann Type Maximum Principle for the Laplace Operator on Compact Riemannian Manifolds

In this paper we present a Neumann type maximum principle for the Laplace operator on compact Riemannian manifolds. A key point is the simple geometric nature of the constant in the a priori estimate of this maximum principle. In particular, this maximum principle can be applied to manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below and diameter bounded from above to yield a maximum estimate without dependence on a positive lower bound for the volume.

Let p_M(t,x,y) be the minimal heat kernel of a d-dimenional compact Riemannian manifold M for any time t\in(0,1] and x,y\in M. Using the horizontal Brown bridge on M, we prove that, for any nonnegative integers n and m, there is a constant C depending on n,m and the manifold M, such that |\nabla^n_x\nabla^m_y\ln p_M(t,x,y)|\leq C[d(x,y)/t+1/\sqrt{t}\,]^{n+m}$, which generalizes the conclusion of the higher derivatives of the logarithmic heat kernel \ln p_M(t,x,y) about single variable in \ncite{1}.     

A New Lower Bound Theorem for Combinatorial 2k-Manifolds

We prove a centrally-symmetric analogue of the generalized Heawood inequality, i.e. we prove a Lower Bound Theorem for combinatorial 2k-manifolds M whose convex hull is a centrally-symmetric simplicial polytope P under the additional assumptions that M is a subcomplex of the boundary complex of P and that M contains the k-skeleton of P. We also deduce a relation for the minimum number of vertices of a combinatorial 2k-manifold satisfying our Lower Bound. Received June 12, 1996 Revised June 9, 1997

Functions of the Laplace Operator on Manifolds with Lower Ricci and Injectivity Bounds

Recent work of G. Mauceri, S. Meda, and M. Vallarino produces L ^p estimates on a natural class of functions of the Laplace–Beltrami operator on a Riemannian manifold M, under fairly weak geometrical hypotheses, namely lower bounds on its injectivity radius and Ricci tensor, but with an auxiliary decay hypothesis on the heat semigroup. We sharpen this result by removing the decay hypothesis.

Some inequalities and asymptotic formulas for eigenvalues on Riemannian manifolds

In this paper, we establish sharp inequalities for four kinds of classical eigenvalues in bounded domains of Riemannian manifolds. We also obtain the Weyl-type asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues of the buckling and clamped plate problems in bounded domains of Riemannian manifolds. In addition, we give a negative answer to the Payne conjecture for the one-dimensional case.     

Variational Principles and Sobolev-Type Estimates for Generalized Interpolation on a Riemannian Manifold

The purpose of this paper is to study certain variational principles and Sobolev-type estimates for the approximation order resulting from using strictly positive definite kernels to do generalized Hermite interpolation on a closed (i.e., no boundary), compact, connected, orientable, m -dimensional C ^∞ Riemannian manifold , with C ^∞ metric g _ij . The rate of approximation can be more fully analyzed with rates of approximation given in terms of Sobolev norms. Estimates on the rate of convergence for generalized Hermite and other distributional interpolants can be obtained in certain circumstances and, finally, the constants appearing in the approximation order inequalities are explicit.
