Anaerobic degradation of sludge amended with linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) was tested in a one stage continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) and a two stage reactor system consisting of a CSTR as first step and upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor as the second step. Anaerobic removal of LAS was only observed at the second step but not at the first step. Removal of LAS in the UASB reactors was approx. 80% where half was due to absorption and the other half was apparently due to biological removal as shown from the LAS mass balance. At the end of the experiment the reactors were spiked with 14C-LAS which resulted in 5.6% 14CO2 in the produced gas. Total mass balance of the radioactivity was however not achieved. In batch experiments it was found that LAS at concentrations higher than 50 mg/l is inhibitory for most microbial groups of the anaerobic process. Therefore, low initial LAS concentration is a prerequisite for successful LAS degradation. The results from the present study suggest that anaerobic degradation of LAS is possible in UASB reactors when the concentration of LAS is low enough to avoid inhibition of microorganisms active in the anaerobic process.  相似文献

A submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) and a conventional activated sludge system (CAS) were compared in parallel over a period of more than 260 days on treating synthetic ammonia-bearing inorganic wastewater without sludge purge under decreased hydraulic retention times (HRTs). Conversion of NH4(+)-N to NO3(-)-N was achieved with an efficiency of over 98% at an HRT > or = 10 h in the SMBR, while similar performance was obtained at an HRT > or = 20 h in the CAS. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplified 16S rDNA was used to monitor variations of community structures in the two systems. With the prolongation of operation, the number of DGGE bands in the SMBR gradually increased from the initial 11 bands to the final 22 bands, whereas that in the CAS varied in a range between 13 and 183 Sequence analysis indicates that Nitrosomonas sp. and Nitrospira sp. were the dominating nitrification species responsible for ammonia and nitrite oxidation, respectively. Heterotrophic bacteria like Pseudomonas sp. and Flavobacteria sp. existed in both of the systems although only inorganic wastewater was fed. Substantive accumulation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the SMBR was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and EPS analysis.  相似文献

The impact of including membranes for solid liquid separation on the kinetics of nitrogen and phosphorus removal was investigated. To achieve this, a membrane bioreactor (MBR) biological nutrient removal (BNR) activated sludge system was operated. From batch tests on mixed liquor drawn from the MBR BNR system, denitrification and phosphorus removal rates were delineated. Additionally the influence of the high total suspended solids concentrations present in the MBR BNR system and of the limitation of substrate concentrations on the kinetics was investigated. Moreover the ability of activated sludge in this kind of system to denitrify under anoxic conditions with simultaneous phosphate uptake was verified and quantified. The denitrification rates obtained for different mixed liquor (ML) concentrations indicate no effect of ML concentration on the specific denitrification rate. The denitrification took place at a single specific rate (K(2)) with respect to the ordinary heterotrophic organisms (OHOs, i.e. non-PAOs) active mass. Similarly, results have been obtained for the P removal process kinetics: no differences in specific rates were observed for different ML or substrate concentrations. From the P removal batch tests results it seems that the biological phosphorus removal population (PAO) consists of 2 different sets of organisms denitrifying PAO and aerobic PAO.  相似文献

Two estrogen fate and transformation models were integrated with a comprehensive activated sludge model (ASM) to predict estrogen removal based on biomass and solids production. Model predictions were evaluated against published full-scale plant data as well as results from a laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) fed synthetic wastewater. The estrogen fate model relating the rate of total estrogen degradation to soluble estrogen concentrations successfully predicted estrogen removals when compared with measured concentrations. Model fit 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) biodegradation rate constant was 19 to 43% of the estrone (E1) value and 31 to 72% of the 17β-estradiol (E2) value.  相似文献

Odours from wastewater treatment plants comprise a mixture of various gases, of which hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is the main constituent. Microorganisms commonly found in wastewater can degrade sulphurous compounds. Therefore, the use of activated sludge (AS) for odour control offers an alternative to traditional waste gas treatment processes, such as biofilters, bioscrubbers and biotrickling filters, both in practical terms (use of existing facilities) and economically (minimal capital cost). The performance of AS diffusion as a bioscrubber for removing H2S at concentrations at 25, 75 and 150 ppmv was evaluated. Pilot-scale trials were undertaken using parallel 60-L aeration tanks and 20-L clarifier reactors at the Bedford Sewage Treatment Works, Carington, UK. Olfactometry measurements were also carried out to determine whether there was any increase in odour concentration owing to H2S diffusion. Hydrogen sulphide removal rates of 100% were obtained, with no noticeable increase in odour concentration throughout the trials as measured by olfactometry. Odour concentration was highest at the beginning of the trials and lowest during the high H2S dosing period, with similar values being obtained for test and control. It was concluded that AS diffusion is an effective bioscrubber for the removal of H2S odour.  相似文献

Installing membranes for solid-liquid separation into biological nutrient removal (BNR) activated sludge (AS) systems makes a profound difference not only to the design of the membrane bio-reactor (MBR) BNR system itself, but also to the design approach for the whole wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). In multi-zone BNR systems with membranes in the aerobic reactor and fixed volumes for the anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic zones (i.e. fixed volume fractions), the mass fractions can be controlled (within a range) with the inter-reactor recycle ratios. This zone mass fraction flexibility is a significant advantage of MBR BNR systems over BNR systems with secondary settling tanks (SSTs), because it allows changing the mass fractions to optimise biological N and P removal in conformity with influent wastewater characteristics and the effluent N and P concentrations required. For PWWF/ADWF ratios (fq) in the upper range (fq approximately 2.0), aerobic mass fractions in the lower range (f(maer) < 0.60) and high (usually raw) wastewater strengths, the indicated mode of operation of MBR BNR systems is as extended aeration WWTPs (no primary settling and long sludge age). However, the volume reduction compared with equivalent BNR systems with SSTs will not be large (40-60%), but the cost of the membranes can be offset against sludge thickening and stabilisation costs. Moving from a flow unbalanced raw wastewater system to a flow balanced (fq = 1) low (usually settled) wastewater strength system can double the ADWF capacity of the biological reactor, but the design approach of the WWTP changes away from extended aeration to include primary sludge stabilisation. The cost of primary sludge treatment then has to be offset against the savings of the increased WWTP capacity.  相似文献

Behaviour of anionic surfactants of linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LAS) type and non-ionic surfactants of nonylphenol polyethoxylate (NPnEO) type was studied in the conventional mechanical/biological sewage treatment plant (STP) as well as using a membrane biological reactor (MBR). LAS and NPnEO were determined using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) equipped with spectrofluorimetric detection. Liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) was used for identification and quantification of stable metabolites, including nonylphenol (NP), nonylphenol monoethoxylate (NP1EO), nonylphenol diethoxylate (NP2EO) and nonylphenoxy carboxylic acids (NPnEC). The study showed that aromatic surfactants belong to the most prominent constituents in the examined municipal wastewaters with typical LAS and NPnEO concentrations of 2-10 mg/L and 0.1-0.5 mg/L, respectively. The removal of aromatic surfactants in conventional STP showed well-known features reported in the literature, including an efficient microbial transformation of the parent molecules and formation of stable metabolic products. The elimination efficiency of aromatic surfactants using the MBR unit was higher than that in the conventional STP, while the composition of recalcitrant nonylphenolic residues in the effluent seems to be ecotoxicologically more favourable due to the lower contributions of the lipophilic metabolites.  相似文献

The possible symbiosis between bacteria and anaerobic archaea was investigated in intermittent aeration (I/A) systems. Archaea solution added to I/A reactor might play an important role in biological activities as well as in improvement of mineralization of organic matter. I/A reactor with archaea solution (I/A-arch) could increase both nitrification and denitrification rate and also reduce the sludge yield remarkably. These results indicate the possibility of the symbiotic activated sludge system with anaerobic archaea by controlling the DO level in the aeration tank. In this study, DO was controlled by intermittent aeration schemes and a successful symbiotic activated sludge system was achieved to reach the following conclusions. 1) SOUR of I/A-arch system was 2.9 mg-O2/g-VSS x min. SOUR and nitrification rate of the sludge from I/A-arch was higher than those from the I/A and A/S reactors. 2) Removal efficiencies of organic matter (TCOD(Cr)) in I/A-arch, I/A and conventional activated sludge (A/S) reactors were 93, 90 and 87%, respectively. 3) Nitrification occurred successfully in each reactor, while denitrification rate was much higher in the I/A-arch reactor. Efficiencies of TN removal in A/I-arch, I/A and A/S reactors were 75, 63 and 33%, respectively. 4) Observed yield coefficients of I/A-arch, I/A and A/S reactors were 0.28, 0.41 and 0.37 g-VSS/g-COD.  相似文献

The conventional mainstream enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process depends on the quality of the raw incoming wastewater. An alternative sidestream EBPR process is presented, where the substrates for storage by the polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) instead come from hydrolysis of the return activated sludge. This process is studied in full-scale at two treatment plants and quantified by means of phosphorus release rates and readily biodegradable COD (RBCOD) accumulation rates. It was seen that not only was a significant amount of RBCOD stored by PAOs but an approximately equal amount was accumulated in the sidestream hydrolysis tank and made available for the subsequent nitrogen removal process. The phosphorus release of the sludge with and without addition of different substrates was furthermore studied in laboratory scale. The study showed that the process is promising and in a number of cases will have significant advantages compared with the conventional mainstream EBPR  相似文献

The behaviour of As(III), As(V), MMA(v) and DMA(v) in batch activated sludge process were investigated. Experiments were carried out by using aerobic and anoxic reactors with an initial As concentration of 100 microjg I(-1). Under aerobic condition, As(III) was oxidized to As(V) within 9 hours, some part of MMA(v) was methylated to DMA(v) and some other part was demethylated to As(III), which in turn was immediately oxidized to As(V). Under anoxic condition, As(V) was reduced to As(III) within the same time-course. No significant transformation occurred during experiments conducted with DMA(v). It was found that all reactions were biologically mediated. The overall As removal was low (< 20%) during the experiments. Although a relationship seems to exist between the sludge concentration and As removal, it is concluded, under the conditions of our study, that the activated sludge process cannot remove arsenicals efficiently. However, it can control their transformations well. Thus, if associated with an appropriate technology, the activated sludge can be used for As pre-oxidation to treat As contaminated wastewaters. Finally, care must be taken on possible presence of MMA(v) in the influent of any wastewater treatment plant as it can be easily oxidized by the activated sludge.  相似文献

In the paper three linear aeration controllers that can be easily implemented are presented and evaluated on the activated sludge process pilot plant. Controllers differ according to the information that is used about the process, which can be oxygen in the last aerobic reactor, ammonia in the last aerobic reactor and ammonia in the influent. The aeration controllers that are addressed are: oxygen cascade PI controller, ammonia cascade PI controller and ammonia feedforward-cascade PI controller. Experiments show that, in comparison with the oxygen cascade PI controller, the ammonia cascade PI controller allows better control of effluent ammonia and airflow savings of around 23%, while the ammonia feedforward-cascade PI controller gives the best reduction of ammonia peaks and can save up to 45% of the airflow.  相似文献

The behaviour of an activated sludge system in starvation conditions was examined in batch according to substrate impulses defined by different S0/X0 ratio. The answer was characterised by an exogenous phase followed by a starvation one. If at high S0/X0 ratio, bacterial cell multiplication was the main synthesis process during exogenous phase, at low S0/X0 ratio the observed phenomenon was compound storage. In starvation conditions, for the lowest S0/X0 ratio, a rapid decrease in the MLVSS without soluble proteins production was observed. No bacterial lysis occurred and this phenomenon was due to consumption of the storage compounds with a decrease rate equal to 0.74d(-1). For high S0/X0 ratio, as soon as the exogenous phase was completed, a decrease of the MLVSS simultaneously to a soluble protein production was observed. An immediate bacterial lysis occurred with a decay rate equal to 0.53 d(-1). Because MBR systems work generally in low F/M conditions, the activity of the present microbial population is close to the one observed in starvation phase. This work points out that these conditions do not allow net bacterial growth and cells just use lysis products to satisfy their maintenance requirements. These assumptions confirm the feasibility of a decrease of the net biomass production in a MBR when high sludge retention time is operated.  相似文献

This study evaluates the performance of nanofiltration membrane bioreactor (NF MBR) systems using cellulose triacetate (CA) and polyamide (PA) membranes. The results indicated that both NF membranes could produce high quality permeate in the submerged NF MBR system. In addition, hollow fiber CA membranes exhibited the capability of higher permeate productivity than PA membranes. However, to obtain high quality permeate for a long-term operation, CA membranes should be maintained using an appropriate method, such as chlorine disinfection, in order to control the membrane biodegradation. The results demonstrated that PA membranes were capable of producing higher quality permeate for a long period than CA membranes. In order to enhance the practicability of PA membranes in submerged NF MBR systems, it is required that the membranes should have the lowest possible intrinsic salt rejection.  相似文献

Adding coagulant to the activated sludge process is effective in maintaining the stability of phosphorus removal. However, the precise mechanisms of the reaction and behavior of coagulants and phosphorus are not well known. By introducing a new phosphorus removal model (PRM), the behavior of coagulant and phosphorus in the process could be described. The experimental data of the effluent phosphorus concentration and Fe content in the activated sludge agreed with the values calculated by PRM. The amount of coagulant addition to the activated sludge process for phosphorus removal is reduced with the enhanced biological phosphorus removal process. It is suggested that the amount of reduction is determined by using PRM.  相似文献

The characteristics of self-forming dynamic membrane (DM) in sequencing bioreactors under different sludge retention times (SRT) (SRT = 5, 10, 20, 40, 60 days) were studied using a scanning electron microscope, particle sizing distribution and others. The results indicated that the SRT has an evident effect on the characteristics of DM. The content of extracellular polymeric substances and protein decreased with the increase of SRT. The change of polysaccharide was small regardless of SRT. The filtration resistance of the DM was divided into two stages: an initial slowly-rising stage and a fast-rising later stage which were both irrespective of SRT. With the increase of SRT, the filtration resistance increase extent reduced and the running cycle became longer. Compared to the lower SRT, the particle size distribution of mixed liquor and DM has a decreasing trend at higher SRT. The average particle size of DM was larger than that of the mixed liquor irrespective of SRT. The amounts and types of microorganisms on the surface of DM were more abundant as SRT increased. Low SRT produced the DM surface with some Cocci while the high SRT gave the DM dominated with Cocci, Filamentous and Bacillus.  相似文献

Although membrane bioreactors have attracted increasing attention in recent years, little research has been undertaken on the influence of the membrane separation on the microbial community composition. This paper compares the startup behaviour and the performance of the subsequent eight months of a membrane bioreactor with a conventional activated sludge pilot plant. Both plants were operated in parallel at the same sludge age and treated the same domestic wastewater. The identification of the nitrifying community composition using fluorescent in situ hybridization revealed only minor differences between the two reactors for both ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria. Accordingly, both systems exhibited the same maximum nitrification rates. Confocal laser scanning microscopy showed that the aggregates formed by nitrifying bacteria were located mostly in the inner part of the flocs and were overgrown by heterotrophic bacteria. It is concluded that the membrane separation itself does affect neither the nitrifying community composition nor the nitrification performance. However, impacts on kinetic parameters are emphasized.  相似文献

Parallel experimental tests to measure mixed liquor filterability for submerged membrane bioreactors were conducted over a six month period using three ZW-500 pilot plants and a ZW-10 lab-scale filterability apparatus. Non-air sparged conditions during the tests yielded operation behaviour that was equivalent to dead-end filtration. The fouling resistance increased linearly with the intercepted mass until a critical point was reached at which point significant cake compression was induced and the resistance began to increase exponentially. Although the point of cake compression appears to be dependent on the membrane module design, similar resistance per unit solid mass intercepted per unit area (R(mass)) values were observed when the same mixed liquor was filtered. Coupled with the established correlation between the R(mass) and the critical flux, it is suggested that the filterability test results from a side-stream, lab-scale module may be used to predict fouling potential in a full scale MBR wastewater treatment system without interrupting the full-scale MBR operation.  相似文献

A lab-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and six full-scale wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) performing enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) were surveyed. The abundance of Accumulibacter-related organisms in the full-scale plants was investigated using fluorescent in situ hybridization. Accumulibacter-related organisms were present in all of the full-scale EBPR plants, at levels ranging from 9% to 24% of total cells. The high percentage of Accumulibacter-related organisms seemed to be associated with configurations which minimize the nitrate recycling to the anaerobic zone and low influent BOD:TP ratios. PCR-based clone libraries were constructed from the community 16S rRNA gene plus the internally transcribed spacer region amplified from the SBR and five of the full-scale WWTPs. Comparative sequence analysis was carried out using Accumulibacter-related clones, providing higher phylogenetic resolution and revealing finer-scale clustering of the sequences retrieved from the SBR and full-scale EBPR  相似文献

Enzymatic hydrolysis under different electron acceptor conditions in nutrient removal activated sludge treatment processes is a weak link in the Activated Sludge Model no. 2 (Henze et al., 1995). An experimental study was undertaken to gain insight into the hydrolysis process with specific focus on hydrolysis kinetics and rates under different electron acceptor conditions. Two pure cultures, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (Gram positive) and Pseudomonas saccharophila (Gram negative) were chosen for the study. In addition, activated sludge grown in an anaerobic-aerobic system was tested for enzymatic activity using starch as the model substrate. The hydrolytic enzymes were found to be released into the bulk in pure cultures whereas the enzyme activity was found to be mainly associated with the cell surfaces in activated sludge. Further, it was observed that the development of the hydrolytic enzyme system in Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and P. saccharophila is strongly suppressed under anoxic and anaerobic conditions. However, the effect of anaerobic and aerobic incubation on hydrolytic enzyme activity in activated sludge was found to be small. Starch hydrolysis kinetic data from batch experiments with activated sludge followed substrate saturation kinetics that were linear with biomass concentration. Finally, the similar hydrolytic enzyme activities observed under anaerobic and aerobic phases of a sequencing batch reactor are explained by considering the aspects of enzyme location and enzyme system development under aerobic and anaerobic phases. It is proposed that the floc bound enzymes are recycled in a single sludge system so that an equilibrium exists between enzyme loss and synthesis at steady state.  相似文献

Conventional cultivation methods and molecular approaches were utilised to describe the filamentous bacterial population of industrial activated sludge WWTPs. In total 43 strains were isolated by micromanipulation and were affiliated with 12 different species, comprising two new species and a new genus. In particular, a new species of Microthrix, a new genus of a filamentous Alphaproteobacteria morphologically similar to Nostocoida limicola, and a new filamentous species closely related to the opportunistic pathogen Propionibacterium propionicum were obtained. Despite the high number of isolates, the cultivation approach was unable to describe the filamentous bacteria most common in industrial WWTP. A culture-independent approach, termed the cell sorting/RT-PCR method, was therefore applied to identify fastidious or non-culturable filamentous microrganisms from different industrial plants. By this method the relevant filaments were micromanipulated and their 16S rDNA genes were amplified by RT-PCR. This approach was highly efficient. In total 31 16S rRNA sequences were obtained and 16 of them were used for the design of new specific oligonucleotide probes that highlighted dominant filaments in industrial activated sludge plants.  相似文献
