Alkylbenzenes form an important segment of petrochemical industry for the manufacture of widely used commodities and specialty products. Since the last review on this topic (8), numerous new zeolite-based catalysts have been synthesized, characterized and evaluated in various transformations of aromatic hydrocarbons. This comprehensive review covers major reactions of mono-, di-, and tri-alkylbenzenes such as disproportionation, alkylation, transalkylation, isomerization, etc., over different zeolite-based acid catalysts. During the last decade, significant progress was made in the synthesis and structure determination of novel zeolites, mesoporous single crystals, hierarchic zeolites and two-dimensional zeolites. These developments have enhanced the understanding of the role of zeolites (effects of structural type, morphology, acid sites, accessibility of acid sites, shape selectivity factors) in transformations of aromatics. In this review, the emphasis is on the influence of the type of acid sites, zeolite topology, and reaction conditions on the activity, selectivity and pathways of these reactions. Thermodynamics and reaction kinetics of transformations of aromatic hydrocarbons are also discussed. This article covers mostly literature published during the period of 2002–2013.

The application range of solid catalysts can be greatly extended by reaction or process modifiers, that is by simple addition of an inorganic or organic compound to the reaction mixture. The modifier, used in catalytic amounts, ideally interacts strongly with the active sites in a fashion which induces favorable changes in the outcome of the reaction. Evolution of the actual modified metal catalyst during reaction and the importance of in situ characterization in understanding these processes are illustrated using the examples of promotion by metal ions and nitrogen-containing bases. The major part of the review describes the advantages and limitations of employing N-base modifiers for tuning the performance of solid catalysts. Reactions discussed include chemo-, stereo-, enantio- and diastereoselective hydrogenations over metal catalysts, aerobic oxidation of alcohols with Pt and Pd, and epoxidation of allylic alcohols with titania–silica mixed oxides and alkyl hydroperoxides.

Metallosilicate catalysts containing iron-group metals were prepared by using the rapid crystallization method. These catalysts had the pentasil structure similar to ZSM-5 zeolite. In case of less metal content, the iron-group metal was incorporated into silicate crystal, and contributed to the formation of strong acid sites. The difference in results of light olefin conversion was understood as reflecting the properties of strong acid sites on each metallosilicate.
