Hume's essay ‘Of Miracles’ has been a focus of controversy ever since its publication. The challenge to Christian orthodoxy was only too evident, but the balance-of-probabilities criterion advanced by Hume for determining when testimony justifies belief in miracles has also been a subject of contention among philosophers. The temptation for those familiar with Bayesian methodology to show that Hume's criterion determines a corresponding balance-of-posterior probabilities in favour of miracles is understandable, but I will argue that their attempts fail. However, I show that his criterion generates a valid form of the so-called No-Miracles Argument appealed to by modern realist philosophers, whose own presentation of it, despite their possession of the probabilistic machinery Hume himself lacked, is invalid. 相似文献

In this paper, I argue that the ultimate argument for Scientific Realism, also known as the No-Miracles Argument (NMA), ultimately fails as an abductive defence of Epistemic Scientific Realism (ESR), where (ESR) is the thesis that successful theories of mature sciences are approximately true. The NMA is supposed to be an Inference to the Best Explanation (IBE) that purports to explain the success of science. However, the explanation offered as the best explanation for success, namely (ESR), fails to yield independently testable predictions that alternative explanations for success do not yield. If this is correct, then there seems to be no good reason to prefer (ESR) over alternative explanations for success. 相似文献

This article explores the relationship between epistemic relativism and Pyrrhonian scepticism. It is argued that a fundamental argument for contemporary epistemic relativism derives from the Pyrrhonian problem of the criterion. Pyrrhonian scepticism is compared and contrasted with Cartesian scepticism about the external world and Humean scepticism about induction. Epistemic relativism is characterized as relativism due to the variation of epistemic norms, and is contrasted with other forms of cognitive relativism, such as truth relativism, conceptual relativism and ontological relativism. An argument from the Pyrrhonian problem of the criterion to epistemic relativism is presented, and is contrasted with three other arguments for epistemic relativism. It is argued that the argument from the criterion is the most fundamental argument for epistemic relativism. Finally, it is noted how the argument of the present paper fits with the author’s previous suggestion that a particularist response to the Pyrrhonian sceptic may be combined with a naturalistic view of epistemic warrant to meet the challenge of epistemic relativism. 相似文献

The angiogenic and other biological functions of the angiogenins, members of the pancreatic RNase superfamily of proteins, are reviewed in the context of their primary and tertiary structures. The ribonucleolytic activity and interactions with the placental ribonuclease inhibitor have seen much study in the last few years. The mechanism of the angiogenic activity of angiogenin has recently been postulated as involving multiple interactions with other proteins through specific regions on the molecular surface of angiogenin. These molecular partners include heparin, plasminogen, elastase, angiostatin, actin and most importantly a 170-kilodalton receptor on subconfluent endothelial cells. The existence of the latter receptor was established in conjunction with a mitogenic activity of angiogenin on subconfluent cells. The levels of angiogenin in various physiological and disease states are summarized, including various studies on pregnancy and angiogenin. Correlations are seen between states of enhanced angiogenesis and angiogenin levels. An overview of the relationship of angiogenin and the other RNases of the superfamily showed that their genes all are in relative close proximity on human chromosome 14. Examination of the many expressed sequence tags published in the public databanks, for angiogenin and the other RNases, revealed that angiogenin and RNase-4 (the most evolutionarily conserved RNase), share various identical 5′-untranslated regions on their sets of messenger RNAs, suggesting that their genes are in very close proximity on chromosome 14 and that they are products of differential splicing. This in turn suggests that, in both humans and mice, expression of these two proteins is under identical control, with obvious implications for their biological activities. The evolutionary history of the angiogenins is examined briefly on the basis of the protein sequences of the human, rabbit, pig, two bovine and four mouse angiogenins, and two mouse angiogenin pseudogene sequences. The discrepancy between the conventional requirement for conservatism in structure to allow multimolecule interactions, and the actual fast-changing sequence of the angiogenins, in concert with the wide-ranging activity even in birds, of human angiogenin, is discussed. 相似文献

The parvins are a family of proteins involved in linking integrins and associated proteins with intracellular pathways that
regulate actin cytoskeletal dynamics and cell survival. Both α-parvin (PARVA) and β-parvin (PARVB) localize to focal adhesions
and function in cell adhesion, spreading, motility and survival through interactions with partners, such as integrin-linked
kinase (ILK), paxillin, α-actinin and testicular kinase 1. A complex of PARVA with ILK and the LIM protein PINCH-1 is critical
for cell survival in a variety of cells, including certain cancer cells, kidney podocytes and cardiac myocytes. While PARVA
inhibits the activities of Rac1 and testicular kinase 1 and cell spreading, PARVB binds αPIX and α-actinin, and can promote
cell spreading. In contrast to PARVA, PARVB inhibits ILK activity and reverses some of its oncogenic effects in cancer cells.
This review focuses on the structure and function of the parvins and some possible roles in human diseases.

Summary Sister chromatid exchange was studied in lymphocyte and fibroblast cultures. Alcohol caused no disturbance under normal conditions but an acetaldehyde level above 40 M inhibited cell multiplication and elevated SCE considerably. The general view is that there is one type of nocturnal, which is universal, first illustrated in a printed book in 1524. Recently, a number of quite differently constructed nocturnals has come to light. Six of these were made at the very beginning of the sixteenth century by Falcono of Bergamo in northern Italy. One of them, with the initials of the inventor, may well be the prototype. Five more are closely similar. Five further nocturnals of the same type have been identified, but they are unsigned, and are not by Falcono. This paper establishes the existence of a hitherto unrecognized Italian workshop, and of a variant type of nocturnal. 相似文献

Summary The sun compass was discovered by G. Kramer in caged birds showing migratory restlessness. Subsequent experiments with caged brids employing directional training and clock shifts, carried out by Hoffmann and by Schmidt-Koenig, showed that sun azimuth is used and sun altitude ignored. McDonald found the accuracy to be ±3o–±5o. According to Hoffmann and to Schmidt-Koenig, caged birds trained at medium northern latitudes were able to allow for the sun's apparent movement north of the arctic circle but not in equatorial and trans-equatorial latitudes.In homing experiments, and employing clock shifts, Schmidt-Koenig demonstrated that the sun compass is used by homing pigeons during initial orientation. This finding supports the existence of a map and compass navigational system. Pigeons living in equatorial latitudes utilize the sun compass even under the extreme solar conditions of equinox (Ranvaud, Schmidt-Koenig, Ganzhorn et al.). The use of the sun compass during zenith passage of the sun is being investigated. 相似文献

In addition to the main olfactory system, many vertebrates possess a vomeronasal system that conveys more specialized chemosensory
information. Unlike the airborne, volatile stimuli detected by the main olfactory system, vomeronasal stimuli are typically
proteins of the lipocalin family which bind small, volatile ligands. Despite the smaller number of vomeronasal receptor types,
the projection patterns of the vomeronasal receptor neurons to multiple glomeruli in the accessory olfactory bulb appear to
be more complicated than those of the main olfactory system. The vomeronasal system has a direct sub-neocortical projection
to hypothalamic areas that mediates specific behavioural and hormonal responses to pheromonal stimuli. However, the integration
and transmission of this information can be modulated by learning mechanisms. The aim of this article is to outline some of
the functions of the vomeronasal system, and in particular to comment on recent advances in our understanding of how vomeronasal
