Nonsmooth Optimization Techniques on Riemannian Manifolds

We present the notion of weakly metrically regular functions on manifolds. Then, a sufficient condition for a real valued function defined on a complete Riemannian manifold to be weakly metrically regular is obtained, and two optimization problems on Riemannian manifolds are considered. Moreover, we present a generalization of the Palais–Smale condition for lower semicontinuous functions defined on manifolds. Then, we use this notion to obtain necessary conditions of optimality for a general minimization problem on complete Riemannian manifolds.     

Gradient estimates for porous medium equations under the Ricci flow

A local gradient estimate for positive solutions of porous medium equations on complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds under the Ricci flow is derived. Moreover, a global gradient estimate for such equations on compact Riemannian manifolds is also obtained.     

KILLING VECTOR FIELDS OF CONSTANT LENGTH ON LOCALLY SYMMETRIC RIEMANNIAN MANIFOLDS

In this paper nontrivial Killing vector fields of constant length and the corresponding ows on smooth complete Riemannian manifolds are investigated. It is proved that such a ow on symmetric space is free or induced by a free isometric action of the circle S ¹. Examples of unit Killing vector fields generated by almost free but not free actions of S ¹ on locally symmetric Riemannian spaces are found; among them are homogeneous (nonsimply connected) Riemannian manifolds of constant positive sectional curvature and locally Euclidean spaces. Three-dimensional semi-symmetric homogeneous Lorentzian manifolds

Because of the different possible forms (Segre types) of the Ricci operator, semi-symmetry assumption for the curvature of a Lorentzian manifold turns out to have very different consequences with respect to the Riemannian case. In fact, a semi-symmetric homogeneous Riemannian manifold is necessarily symmetric, while we find some three-dimensional homogeneous Lorentzian manifolds which are semi-symmetric but not symmetric. The complete classification of three-dimensional semi-symmetric homogeneous Lorentzian manifolds is obtained.

Line integration of Ricci curvature and conjugate points in Lorentzian and Riemannian manifolds

Generalizing results of Cohn-Vossen and Gromoll, Meyer for Riemannian manifolds and Hawking and Penrose for Lorentzian manifolds, we use Morse index theory techniques to show that if the integral of the Ricci curvature of the tangent vector field of a complete geodesic in a Riemannian manifold or of a complete nonspacelike geodesic in a Lorentzian manifold is positive, then the geodesic contains a pair of conjugate points. Applications are given to geodesic incompleteness theorems for Lorentzian manifolds, the end structure of complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds, and the geodesic flow of compact Riemannian manifolds.Partially supported by NSF grant MCS77-18723(02).     

A new variational characterization of Jacobi fields along geodesies

A classical result of Riemannian geometry states that Jacobi fields along geodesics of a Riemannian manifold (Q, g) can be obtained as geodesies of the so-called «complete lift» of the metric g itself to the tangent bundle TQ. We show that this classical result is in fact a very simple consequence of a completely general theorem of Calculus of Variations.     

Quasi-isometries of groups, graphs and surfaces

We give a characterization of virtual surface groups as groups quasi-isometric to complete simply-connected Riemannian surfaces. Results on the equivalence up to quasi-isometry of various bounded geometry conditions for Riemannian surfaces are also obtained. Received: January 18, 2000     

Liouville Type Theorem About p-Harmonic Function and p-Harmonic Map with Finite L~q-Energy

This paper deals with the p-harmonic function on a complete non-compact submanifold M isometrically immersed in an(n + k)-dimensional complete Riemannian manifold M of non-negative(n-1)-th Ricci curvature. The Liouville type theorem about the p-harmonic map with finite L~q-energy from complete submanifold in a partially nonnegatively curved manifold to non-positively curved manifold is also obtained.
