Fuel cells output power depends on the operating conditions, including cell temperature, oxygen partial pressure, hydrogen partial pressure, and membrane water content. In each particular condition, there is only one unique operating point for a fuel cell system with the maximum output. Thus, a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller is needed to increase the efficiency of the fuel cell systems. In this paper an efficient method based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) and PID controller (PSO-PID) is proposed for MPPT of the proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The closed loop system includes the PEM fuel cell, boost converter, battery and PSO-PID controller. PSO-PID controller adjusts the operating point of the PEM fuel cell to the maximum power by tuning of the boost converter duty cycle. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm, simulation results are compared with perturb and observe (P&O) and sliding mode (SM) algorithms under different operating conditions. PSO algorithm with fast convergence, high accuracy and very low power fluctuations tracks the maximum power point of the fuel cell system.  相似文献

Nonlinearity and the time-varying dynamics of fuel cell systems make it complex to design a controller for improving output performance. This paper introduces an application of a model reference adaptive control to a low-power proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell system, which consists of three main components: a fuel cell stack, an air pump to supply air, and a solenoid valve to adjust hydrogen flow. From the system perspective, the dynamic model of the PEM fuel cell stack can be expressed as a multivariable configuration of two inputs, hydrogen and air-flow rates, and two outputs, cell voltage and current. The corresponding transfer functions can be identified off-line to describe the linearized dynamics with a finite order at a certain operating point, and are written in a discrete-time auto-regressive moving-average model for on-line estimation of parameters. This provides a strategy of regulating the voltage and current of the fuel cell by adaptively adjusting the flow rates of air and hydrogen. Experiments show that the proposed adaptive controller is robust to the variation of fuel cell system dynamics and power request. Additionally, it helps decrease fuel consumption and relieves the DC/DC converter in regulating the fluctuating cell voltage.  相似文献

Transient behavior is a key property in the vehicular application of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. A better control technology is constructed to increase the transient performance of PEM fuel cells. A steady-state isothermal analytical fuel cell model is constructed to analyze mass transfer and water transport in the membrane. To prevent the starvation of air in the PEM fuel cell, time delay control is used to regulate the optimum stoichiometric amount of oxygen, although dynamic fluctuations exist in the PEM fuel cell power. A bidirectional DC/DC converter connects the battery to the DC link to manage the power distribution between the fuel cell and the battery. Dynamic evolution control (DEC) allows for adequate pulse-width modulation (PWM) control of the bidirectional DC/DC converter with fast response. Matlab/Simulink/Simpower simulation is performed to validate the proposed methodology, increase the transient performance of the PEM fuel cell system and satisfy the requirement of energy management.  相似文献

This paper introduces a technique based on linear quadratic regulator (LQR) to control the output voltage at the load point versus load variation from a standalone proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell power plant (FCPP) for a group housing use. The controller modifies the optimal gains k i by minimizing a cost function, and the phase angle of the AC output voltage to control the active and reactive power output from an FCPP to match the terminal load. The control actions are based on feedback signals from the terminal load, output voltage and fuel cell feedback current. The topology chosen for the simulation consists of a 45 kW proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), boost type DC/DC converter, a three-phase DC/AC inverter followed by an LC filter. Simulation results show that the proposed control strategy operated at low commutation frequency (2 kHz) offers good performances versus load variations with low total harmonic distortions (THD), which is very useful for high power applications.  相似文献

This paper presents the modeling and the simulation of a hybrid marine current-hydrogen power generation system. The marine current power generation system consists of a fixed pitch marine current turbine directly coupled to a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). The generator is connected to a DC link capacitor via a controlled rectifier, which has two modes of operation. The first mode is the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) by using torque control when the generator runs below the rated speed. The second mode is the power limitation (at the rated value) when the generator runs above the nominal speed. The generated power is transferred from the DC-link to the load via an inverter to run the system in a stand-alone operation mode. An energy storage system must cover the difference between the generation and the consumption for this scheme. The hydrogen, compared with the different energy storage systems, exhibits characteristics more applicable for marine current power generation systems. When the generated power is higher than the load requirements, a Megawatt-scale proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer consumes the surplus energy for hydrogen generation. The generated hydrogen is stored in tanks to feed a PEM fuel cell system to generate power in case of shortage. Based on this topology and operation procedure, the overall system is called an active power generation system. The MW scale PEM electrolyzer model is presented based on state of the art and the literature of different scales PEM electrolyzer system modeling.  相似文献

In this paper, a novel system analysis and controller design method for the air supply of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell systems is proposed. Firstly, a class of nonlinear systems with specific structures are introduced. In further analysis, the introduced system can be divided into two parts: one is fast and include disturbances and uncertainty, and the other is relatively slow. We change the introduced system into an equivalent cascade system. Some state variables of the first subsystem are acted as the inputs of the second subsystem. Furthermore, the similarities between the air supply system and the equivalent cascade system are proved, and a cascade controller is proposed based on uncertainty and disturbance estimation (UDE) and Lyapunov method. Moreover, we implement the algorithm in the air supply system for PEM fuel cells. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.  相似文献

The conceptual design of an ammonia fuel processing unit (AFPU), which mainly consists of a heat‐exchanger type reactor and a hollow‐fiber membrane separator, is addressed. Through the theoretical modeling and simulations in gPROMS® environment, it is verified that the cocurrent‐flow annular reactor can carry out 99.5% ammonia conversion without external energy supply and the hollow‐fiber membrane separator produces 99.99% pure hydrogen for a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell. A combination of a PEM fuel cell power system, AFPU and a specific heat‐exchanger network framework is developed as a stand‐alone (off‐the‐grid) PEM fuel cell power generation system, where the optimal feed conditions are determined by solving a constrained optimization algorithm for maximizing the hydrogen yield of the AFPU. Optimized robust control for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell air supply systems is now a hot topic in improving the performance of oxygen excess ratio (OER) and the net power. In this paper, a cascade adaptive sliding mode control method is proposed to regulate oxygen excess ratio (OER) for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell air supply systems. Based on a simplified sixth-order nonlinear dynamic model, which takes parametric uncertainties, external disturbances and measurement noises into consideration, the nonlinear controller based on cascade adaptive sliding mode (NC-ASM) control is proposed. The method combines the nonlinear terms of super twisting algorithm and two added linear terms, and the modified second order sliding mode (SOSM) algorithm based on an observer is employed to form a cascade structure. Besides, an adaptive law is also utilized to regulate the parameters of the NC-ASM controller online. The performance of the controller is implemented on a real-time emulator. The results show that the proposed strategy performs better than the conventional constant sliding mode (CSM) control and PID method. Though during large range of load current and in the presence of various uncertainties, disturbances and noises, the NC-ASM controller can always converge rapidly, the feasibility and effectiveness are validated.  相似文献

Using fuel cell systems for distributed generation (DG) applications represents a meaningful candidate to conventional plants due to their high power density and the heat recovery potential during the electrochemical reaction. A hybrid power system consisting of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell stack and an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is proposed to utilize the waste heat generated from PEM fuel cell. The system performance is evaluated by the steady-state mathematical models and thermodynamic laws. Meanwhile, a parametric analysis is also carried out to investigate the effects of some key parameters on the system performance, including the fuel flow rate, PEM fuel cell operating pressure, turbine inlet pressure and turbine backpressure. Results show that the electrical efficiency of the hybrid system combined by PEM fuel cell stack and ORC can be improved by about 5% compared to that of the single PEM fuel cell stack without ORC, and it is also indicated that the high fuel flow rate can reduce the PEM fuel cell electrical efficiency and overall electrical efficiency. Moreover, with an increased fuel cell operating pressure, both PEM fuel cell electrical efficiency and overall electrical efficiency firstly increase, and then decrease. Turbine inlet pressure and backpressure also have effects on the performance of the hybrid power system.  相似文献

A novel portable electric power generation system, fuelled by ammonia, is introduced and its performance is evaluated. In this system, a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack that consists of anode-supported planar cells with Ni-YSZ anode, YSZ electrolyte and YSZ-LSM cathode is used to generate electric power. The small size, simplicity, and high electrical efficiency are the main advantages of this environmentally friendly system. The results predicted through computer simulation of this system confirm that the first-law efficiency of 41.1% with the system operating voltage of 25.6 V is attainable for a 100 W portable system, operated at the cell voltage of 0.73 V and fuel utilization ratio of 80%. In these operating conditions, an ammonia cylinder with a capacity of 0.8 l is sufficient to sustain full-load operation of the portable system for 9 h and 34 min. The effect of the cell operating voltage at different fuel utilization ratios on the number of cells required in the SOFC stack, the first- and second-law efficiencies, the system operating voltage, the excess air, the heat transfer from the SOFC stack, and the duration of operation of the portable system with a cylinder of ammonia fuel, are also studied through a detailed sensitivity analysis. Overall, the ammonia-fuelled SOFC system introduced in this paper exhibits an appropriate performance for portable power generation applications.  相似文献

Hydrogen is an important alternative as a clean fuel for industry and power-to-gas energy storage. The water electrolysis process is a promising technology in green hydrogen production where proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology has been keenly interested. Industrial large-scale PEM electrolyzers need a high current power supply. When connected to an alternating current (AC) source, high current power rectifiers are used to convert AC to DC. Currently, the most commonly used topology in large-scale PEM electrolysis systems is the thyristor-based topology due to its technology maturity and low cost. However, this topology presents several drawbacks in terms of power quality and consequently leads to higher stack-specific energy consumption (SEC) and additional losses. In the present research, we demonstrate the potential power quality improvement for a 20 MW PEM water electrolysis system by rectifier topology upgrade. Rather than traditional thyristor-based topology, a 3-phase interleaved buck rectifier topology is proposed. The new topology presents advantages on both AC and DC sides via a validated simulation model, which is built using MATLAB/Simulink and then validated with experimental data from an industrial 20 MW PEM water electrolyzer at Air Liquide's Bécancour plant. Results show a great improvement in terms of power factor, Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), and DC-current ripple reducing the total losses and the SEC of the PEM stack, especially under partial load. Towards a higher power efficiency, the proposed rectifier topology may be considered in the construction of future large-scale PEM systems.  相似文献

This paper deals with the energy optimization of an embedded fuel cell generator. To reach this aim, experimentally validated models of a low power 5 kW proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) and its most power hungry ancillary (motor-compressor group) are described. All simulation results have been performed using Matlab/Simulink® environment. Moreover, a control strategy of the air supply circuit integrated in an embedded fuel cell system is proposed. The air flow control of the air supply circuit is built around a fuzzy PD + I controller and for the air supply set point determination, a fuzzy supervision is proposed. The parameters of this fuzzy supervision have been optimized thanks to particle swarm optimization (PSO) method.  相似文献

This paper reports on the dynamic behavior of a 250 kW proton exchange membrane fuel cell power plant (PEM FCPP) and a 250 kW microturbine (MT) when operating in parallel. A load sharing control scheme is used to distribute the load equally between the PEM FCPP and the MT. For stand alone operation of a PEM FCPP, a set of batteries or ultracapacitors are needed in order to satisfy the power mismatch during transient periods. Using MT in parallel with the PEM FCPP helps in eliminating the need for storage devices. Models for the PEM FCPP and the MT with power, voltage and speed controls are used to determine the dynamic response of the system to a step change in the load. Simulation results indicate viability of parallel operation of the PEM FCPP and the MT. These results are obtained using MATLAB®, Simulink®, and SimPowerSystems®.  相似文献

This paper presents a comparison between the dynamic behavior of a 250 kW stand-alone proton exchange membrane fuel cell power plant (PEM FCPP) and a 250 kW stand-alone microturbine (MT). Dynamic models for the two are introduced. To control the voltage and the power output of the PEM FCPP, voltage and power control loops are added to the model. For the MT, voltage, speed, and power control are used. Dynamic models are used to determine the response of the PEM FCPP and MT to a load step change. Simulation results indicate that the response of the MT to reach a steady state is about twice as fast as the PEM FCPP. For stand-alone operation of a PEM FCPP, a set of batteries or ultracapacitors is needed in order to satisfy the power mismatch during transient periods. Software simulation results are obtained by using MATLAB®, Simulink®, and SimPowerSystems®.  相似文献

A numerical model is developed from a stationary proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system comprising a PEMFC, a DC‐DC buck converter, an auxiliary power supply (a lithium battery and supercapacitor), and a DC‐AC inverter. The transient and steady‐state performance of the PEMFC system is investigated by means of Matlab/Simulink simulations. It is shown that a good agreement exists between the simulated polarization curve of the PEMFC and the experimental results presented in the literature. In addition, it is shown that the DC‐DC buck converter provides an effective means of stabilizing the output voltage of the PEMFC. Finally, the results confirm the effectiveness of the auxiliary power source in enabling the PEMFC to satisfy the peak load demand. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stacks are not widely used in the field of transportation industry, due to their limited power. Thus, the PEMFC stacks usually connected in parallel or series to meet the load demand power in high-power applications. The hydrogen consumption of multi-stack fuel cells (MFCs) system is related to the efficiency and output power. In addition, the efficiency of PEMFC depends on the applied voltage and other parameters. Consequently, the hydrogen consumption of system changes with varying load, because the system parameters are also varying. It makes reducing the fuel consumption of system a challenging assignment. In order to achieve the goal of minimizing fuel consumption of parallel-connected PEMFCs system, this paper proposes a novel power distribution strategy based on forgetting factor recursive least square (FFRLS) online identification. The FFRLS algorithm is based on data-driven and uses real-time data of the system to improve the estimation accuracy of PEMFC system parameters. On the test bench of parallel-connected PEMFCs system consists of two 300 W PEMFC stacks, PEMFC stack controller, DC/DC converters, and DSP controller etc., a multi-index performance test and comparative analysis are carried out. The results showed that, the performance of proposed power allocation strategy has been successfully validated. In addition, compared with the power average and daisy chain algorithms, the proposed online identification power distribution method can get more satisfactory results. Such as, reducing the hydrogen consumption and improving efficiency.  相似文献

Water management is a significant challenge in portable polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells and particularly in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells with air-breathing cathodes. Liquid water condensation and accumulation at the cathode surface is unavoidable in a passive design operated over a wide range of ambient and load conditions. Excessive flooding or dry out of the open cathode can lead to a dramatic reduction of fuel cell power. We report a water management design based on a hydrophilic and electrically conductive wick. A prototype air-breathing fuel cell with the proposed water management design successfully operated under severe flooding conditions, ambient temperature 10 °C and relative humidity of 80%, for up to 6 h with no observable cathode flooding or loss of performance.  相似文献

Based on the models of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell working at steady state and a semiconductor thermoelectric generator, a hybrid system consisting of a PEM fuel cell, a semiconductor thermoelectric generator, and a regenerator is originally put forward. Expressions for the efficiencies and power outputs of the fuel cell, thermoelectric generator, and hybrid system are derived. The relation between the operating electric currents in the fuel cell and thermoelectric generator is obtained. The maximum power output of the hybrid system is numerically given. The optimally operating electric currents in the fuel cell and thermoelectric generator are calculated, and consequently, the optimal region of the hybrid system is determined. The results obtained here will provide some guidance for further understanding the performance and operation of practical PEM fuel cell-thermoelectric generator hybrid systems.  相似文献

In this work a state and transfer function model of the set made up of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell and a DC/DC converter is developed. The set is modelled as a plant controlled by the converter duty cycle. In addition to allow setting the plant operating point at any point of its characteristic curve (two interesting points are maximum efficiency and maximum power points), this approach also allows the connection of the fuel cell to other energy generation and storage devices, given that, as they all usually share a single DC bus, a thorough control of the interconnected devices is required. First, the state and transfer function models of the fuel cell and the converter are obtained. Then, both models are related in order to achieve the fuel cell+DC/DC converter set (plant) model. The results of the theoretical developments are validated by simulation on a real fuel cell model.  相似文献

Hydrogen refuelling stations are important for achieving sustainable hydrogen economy in low carbon transport and fuel cell electric vehicles. The solution presented in this paper provides us with a technology for producing carbon dioxide free hydrogen, which is an approach that goes beyond the existing large-scale hydrogen production technologies that use fossil fuel reforming. Hence, the main goal of this work was to design a hydrogen refuelling station to secure the autonomy of a hydrogen powered bicycle. The bicycle hydrogen system is equipped with a proton exchange membrane fuel cell stack of 300 W, a DC/DC converter, and a metal hydride storage tank of 350 NL of hydrogen. The hydrogen power system was made of readily available commercial components. The hydrogen station was designed as an off-grid system in which the installed proton exchange membrane electrolyzer is supplied with electric energy by direct conversion using photovoltaic cells. With the hydrogen flow rate of 2000 cc min−1 the hydrogen station is expected to supply at least 5 bicycles to be used in 20 km long city tourist routes.  相似文献
