Dually responsive amphiphilic diblock copolymers consisting of hydrophilic poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) [poly(NIPAAm)] and hydrophobic poly(9‐anthracene methyl methacrylate) were synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) polymerization with 3‐(benzyl sulfanyl thiocarbonyl sulfanyl) propionic acid as a chain‐transfer agent. In the first step, the poly(NIPAAm) chain was grown to make a macro‐RAFT agent, and in the second step, the chain was extended by hydrophobic 9‐anthryl methyl methacrylate to yield amphiphilic poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide‐b‐9‐anthracene methyl methacrylate) block copolymers. The formation of copolymers with three different hydrophobic block lengths and a fixed hydrophilic block was confirmed from their molecular weights. The self‐assembly of these copolymers was studied through the determination of the lower critical solution temperature and critical micelle concentration of the copolymers in aqueous solution. The self‐assembled block copolymers displayed vesicular morphology in the case of the small hydrophobic chain, but the morphology gradually turned into a micellar type when the hydrophobic chain length was increased. The variations in the length and chemical composition of the blocks allowed the tuning of the block copolymer responsiveness toward both the pH and temperature. The resulting self‐assembled structures underwent thermally induced and pH‐induced morphological transitions from vesicles to micelles and vice versa in aqueous solution. These dually responsive amphiphilic diblock copolymers have potential applications in the encapsulation of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic drug molecules, as evidenced from the dye encapsulation studies. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of less‐activated monomers in a controlled fashion is challenging due to the high reactivity and instability of the propagating radicals. We have designed dithiocarbamate‐based RAFT agents with morpholine as activating ‘Z’ group and benzyl, ethyl(1‐ethanoate)yl, ethyl(2‐propanoate)yl and cyanomethyl as ‘R’ leaving groups and investigated them for the reversible deactivation radical polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) and N‐vinylimidazole (N‐VIm). RAFT polymerization of VAc and N‐VIm at 70 °C using azobisisobutyronitrile as a free radical initiator proceeded in a controlled fashion as demonstrated by a linear increase in molar mass with conversion. Interestingly, the polymerization of VAc followed fast kinetics (approx. 60 min) with good to moderate control affording high‐molar‐mass poly(VAc) polymers. Furthermore, the synthesized chain transfer agents were able to polymerize N‐VIm under controlled conditions. The morpholine RAFT agents bearing cyanomethyl and ethyl(2‐propanoate)yl leaving groups showed better control of the polymerization of VAc and N‐VIm compared to the others. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Utilization of a flow reactor under high pressure allows highly efficient polymer synthesis via reversible addition–fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT ) polymerization in an aqueous system. Compared with the batch reaction, the flow reactor allows the RAFT polymerization to be performed in a high‐efficiency manner at the same temperature. The adjustable pressure of the system allows further elevation of the reaction temperature and hence faster polymerization. Other reaction parameters, such as flow rate and initiator concentration, were also well studied to tune the monomer conversion and the molar mass dispersity (?) of the obtained polymers. Gel permeation chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies (FTIR) were utilized to monitor the polymerization process. With the initiator concentration of 0.15 mmol L?1, polymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate with monomer conversion of 52% at 100 °C under 73 bar can be achieved within 40 min with narrow molar mass dispersity (D) ? (<1.25). The strategy developed here provides a method to produce well‐defined polymers via RAFT polymerization with high efficiency in a continuous manner. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Four dithiocarbamates, carbazole‐9‐carbodithioic acid benzyl ester (R1), carbazole‐9‐carbodithioic acid naphthalen‐1‐ylmethyl ester (R2), 2‐(carbazole‐9‐carbothioylsulfanyl)‐2‐methyl‐propionic acid ethyl ester (R3), and (carbazole‐9‐carbothioylsulfanyl)‐phenyl‐acetic acid methyl ester (R4), were synthesized and used to the reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerizations of styrene (St), methyl methacrylate (MMA), and methyl acrylate (MA), respectively. The influence of chemical structure of dithiocarbamates with different R groups on the RAFT polymerizations was investigated. The results showed that the four RAFT agents were effective RAFT agents for the polymerizations of styrene or MA, and that the polymerizations were well‐controlled with the characteristics of controlled/“living” polymerization. The polymerization rate of styrene with thermal initiation was markedly influenced by the chemical structures of the group R in dithiocarbamates, and decreased in the order of R3 > R2 > R4 > R1. For the polymerization of MA, the efficiency of RAFT agents was in the following order: R2–R3 > R1 > R4. However, they were not efficient enough to control the polymerization of MMA. The obtained polystyrene (PSt) with carbazole group labeled strongly absorbed UV light at 294 nm and emitted fluorescent light in N,N‐dimethyl formamide (DMF). © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The successful reversible addition‐fragmentation (RAFT)‐mediated graft polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) in emulsion phase from polyethylene/polypropylene nonwoven fabric using 4‐cyano‐4‐[(phenylcarbonothioyl)thio]pentanoic acid under γ‐irradiation at ambient condition is reported. While conventional graft polymerization in emulsion phase yielded grafted materials with low of grafting (Dg) values [<7.5% at 10% (wt/wt) GMA], addition of RAFT agent to the graft polymerization system allowed the synthesis of polyethylene/polypropylene‐g‐poly(GMA) with more tunable Dg (8% ≤ Dg ≤ 94%) by controlling the grafting parameters. Relatively good control (PDI ~1.2 for selected grafting conditions) during polymerization was attained at 100:1 monomer‐to‐RAFT agent molar ratio. The number average molecular weight of free poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) increased as a function of monomer conversion. NMR analyses of the free PGMA homopolymers indicate the presence of dithiobenzoate group from 4‐cyano‐4‐((phenylcarbonothioyl)thio) pentanoic acid on the polymer chain. The reactive pendant oxirane group of the grafted GMA can be modified for various environmental and industrial applications. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Thermoresponsive and pH‐responsive gels were synthesized from N‐isopropyl acrylamide (NIPA) and N,N′‐dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) monomers. Gelation reactions were carried out with both conventional free‐radical polymerization (CFRP) and controlled free‐radical polymerization [reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT)] techniques. The CFRP gels were prepared by polymerizing mixtures of NIPA and DMAEMA in 1,4‐dioxane in presence of N,N'‐methylene bisacrylamide (BIS) as cross‐linker. The RAFT gels were prepared by a the polymerization of NIPA via a similar process in the presence of different amounts of poly(N,N′‐dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate) macro chain‐transfer agent and the crosslinker. These gels were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry. SEM analysis revealed a macroporous network structure for the RAFT gels, whereas their volume phase‐transition temperatures (VPTTs) were found to be in the range 32–34°C, close to that of poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) gels. However, the CFRP copolymer gels exhibited a higher VPTT; this increased with increasing DMAEMA content. The RAFT gels exhibited higher swelling capabilities than the corresponding CFRP gels and also showed faster shrinking–reswelling behavior in response to changes in temperature. All of the gels showed interesting pH‐responsive behavior as well. The unique structural attributes exhibited by the RAFT gels can potentially open up opportunities for developing new materials for various applications, for example, as adsorbents or carrier of drugs or biomolecules. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. RAFT polymerization of N‐vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) has been investigated in the presence of chain transfer agent (CTA), i.e., prop‐2‐ynyl morpholine‐4‐carbodithioate (PMDC). The influence of reaction parameters such as monomer concentration [NVP], molar ratio of [CTA]/[AIBN, i.e., 2,2′‐azobis (2‐methylpropionitrile)] and [NVP]/[CTA], and temperature have been studied with regard to time and conversion limit. This study evidences the parameters leading to an excellent control of molecular weight and molar mass dispersity. NVP has been polymerized by maintaining molar ratio [NVP]: [PMDC]: [AIBN] = 100 : 1 : 0.2. Kinetics of the reaction was strongly influenced by both temperature and [CTA]/[AIBN] ratio and to a lesser extent by monomer concentration. The activation energy (Ea = 31.02 kJ mol?1) and enthalpy of activation (ΔH?= 28.29 kJ mol?1) was in a good agreement to each other. The negative entropy of activation (ΔS? = ?210.16 J mol‐1K‐1) shows that the movement of reactants are highly restricted at transition state during polymerization. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A well‐defined graft copolymer, polystyrene‐graft‐poly(methyl methacrylate), was synthesized in two steps. In the first step, styrene and p‐vinyl benzene sulfonyl chloride were copolymerized via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) in benzene at 60 °C with 2‐(ethoxycarbonyl)prop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate as a chain transfer agent and 2,2′‐azobis(isobutyronitrile) as an initiator. In the second step, poly[styrene‐cop‐(vinyl benzene sulfonyl chloride)] was used as a macroinitiator for the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in toluene at 80 °C with CuCl as a catalyst and 2,2′‐bipyridine as a ligand. With sulfonyl chloride groups as the initiating sites for the ATRP of MMA, high initiation efficiencies were obtained. Copyright © 2006 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Poly(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐polyurethane‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) tri‐block copolymers have been synthesized successfully through atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate using telechelic bromo‐terminated polyurethane/CuBr/N,N,N,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine initiating system. As the time increases, the number‐average molecular weight increases linearly from 6400 to 37,000. This shows that the poly methyl methacrylate blocks were attached to polyurethane block. As the polymerization time increases, both conversion and molecular weight increased and the molecular weight increases linearly with increasing conversion. These results indicate that the formation of the tri‐block copolymers was through atom transfer radical polymerization mechanism. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectral results of the triblock copolymers show that the molar ratio between polyurethane and poly (methyl methacrylate) blocks is in the range of 1 : 16.3 to 1 : 449.4. Differential scanning calorimetry results show Tg of the soft segment at ?35°C and Tg of the hard segment at 75°C. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

The 2‐oxo‐tetrahydrofuran‐3‐yl 9H‐carbazole‐9‐carbodithioate (OTCC) mediated reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerizations of styrene and methyl acrylate were investigated. The results showed that OTCC was an effective RAFT agent for the polymerizations of styrene and methyl acrylate. The polymerizations exhibited “living”/controlled characters. The resulting carbazole and 2‐oxo‐tetrahydrofuran‐3‐yl groups end‐labeled polymer exhibited stronger fluorescence in N, N‐dimethyl formamide, compared with those of OTCC under the same conditions. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Photo‐induced atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was achieved in poly(ethylene glycol)‐400 with nanosized α‐Fe2O3 as photoinitiator. Well‐defined poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was synthesized in conjunction with ethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate (EBiB) as ATRP initiator and FeCl3·6H2O/Triphenylphosphine (PPh3) as complex catalyst. The photo‐induced polymerization of MMA proceeded in a controlled/living fashion. The polymerization followed first‐order kinetics. The obtained PMMA had moderately controlled number‐average molecular weights in accordance with the theoretical number‐average molecular weights, as well as narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn). In addition, the polymerization could be well controlled by periodic light‐on–off processes. The resulting PMMA was characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance and gel permeation chromatography. The brominated PMMA was used further as macroinitiator in the chain‐extension with MMA to verify the living nature of photo‐induced ATRP of MMA. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Photochemically mediated controlled/“living” polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) triggered by flavone was studied. The polymerization was performed in ethanol at ambient temperature with CuBr2/Tris(2‐dimethylaminoethyl)amine (Me6TREN) as complex catalyst and ethyl 2‐bromoisobutyrate (EBiB) as initiator. The molar mass of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was obtained and exhibited relatively narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) which was characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Chain extension further indicated that the living nature was maintained in the photopolymerization system. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2016 , 133, 43845.  相似文献

The controllability of the atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the polar solvent N,N‐dimethylformamide and the nonpolar solvent xylene with 4‐(chloromethyl)phenyltrimethoxysilane as an initiator and with CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridine and CuCl/4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine as catalyst systems was studied. Gel permeation chromatography analysis established that in the nonpolar solvent xylene, much better control of the molecular weight and polydispersity of poly(methyl methacrylate) was achieved with the CuCl/4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine catalyst system than with the CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridine as catalyst system. In the polar solvent N,N‐dimethylformamide, unlike in xylene, the polymerization was more controllable with the CuCl/2,2′‐bipyridine catalyst system than with the CuCl/4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine catalyst system. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of chloroprene (CP) in an emulsion system using a dithiocarbamate‐type RAFT agent was studied. The controlled RAFT‐mediated emulsion polymerization was achieved by the appropriate combination of a RAFT agent and nonionic surfactant (polyoxyethylene phenyl ether) using a water‐soluble initiator (VA‐044) at 35 °C. An almost linear first‐order kinetic plot was observed until relatively high conversion (>80%) with molecular weights between 22,300 and 33,100 and relatively narrow molecular weight distributions (Mw/Mn ≦ 1.5) were achieved. The amount of the emulsifier used and the pH of the system were found to affect the controlled character, polymerization rate, and induction period, which are related to the size of the emulsion particles. Large‐scale RAFT‐mediated emulsion polymerization was also employed to afford industrially applicable poly(CP) (Mw > 25 × 104, resulting product > 2300 g). The vulcanized CP rubber obtained from the RAFT‐synthesized poly(CP) exhibited better physical properties, particularly tensile modulus and compression set, which may be due to the presence of the reactive end groups and the absence of low‐molecular‐weight products. We also evaluated the impact of the chain‐end structure on the mechanical and physical properties of these industrially important CP rubbers with carbon black. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Network formation was monitored by shear storage modulus (G′) during free radical crosslinking polymerization to investigate the effects of pH and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA; a complex agent). Three types of acrylic monomers, acrylic acid (AAc), 2‐acrylamidoglycolic acid (AmGc), and 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl propanesulfonic acid (AmPS), were polymerized in the presence of a crosslinking agent. The ratio of crosslinking agent (methylene bis‐acrylamide; MBAAm) to monomer was varied as: 0.583 × 10?3, 1.169 × 10?3, 1.753 × 10?3, and 2.338 × 10?3. G′ of the hydrogel in crosslinking polymerizations of AAc and AmPS was effectively increased by addition of EDTA, which was not the case for the crosslinking polymerization of AmGc. The order of magnitude of G′ differed based on the acidity of monomer. The maximum values of G′ in crosslinking polymerizations of AAc, AmGc, and AmPS were ~20,000 Pa, 6000 Pa, and 400 Pa, respectively. G′ varied linearly with the molecular weight between crosslinks (Mwc). pH and EDTA‐complex affected the rate of intramolecular propagation during crosslinking polymerization. Our results indicated that G′ was primarily affected by the following factors in the order: (1) acidity of monomer, (2) Mwc, and (3) physical interactions induced by pH and EDTA. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The graft polymerization of methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate onto poly(vinyl chloride‐co‐vinyl acetate) with atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was successfully carried out with copper(I) thiocyanate/N,N,N,N,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine and copper(I) chloride/2,2′‐bipyridine as catalysts in the solvent N,N‐dimethylformamide. For methyl methacrylate, a kinetic plot of ln([M]0/[M]) (where [M]0 is the initial monomer concentration and [M] is the monomer concentration) versus time for the graft polymerization was almost linear, and the molecular weight of the graft copolymer increased with increasing conversion, this being typical for ATRP. The formation of the graft polymer was confirmed with gel permeation chromatography, 1H‐NMR, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The glass‐transition temperature of the copolymer increased with the concentration of methyl methacrylate. The graft copolymer was hydrolyzed, and its swelling capacity was measured. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 96: 183–189, 2005  相似文献

The specific features of free‐radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of a new initiating system, benzoyl peroxide‐N,N‐dimethyl‐N‐(methylferrocenyl)amine, are studied. Mutual influence of ferrocenyl‐ and amine groups on kinetic parameters of polymerization and on the microstructure of the resulting polymers is found. It is shown that the polymer obtained in the presence of this initiating system has predominantly syndiotactic structure. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 103: 724–727, 2007  相似文献

The synthetic route for the preparation of α,ω‐isocyanate‐telechelic poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐acryloxysuccinimide) and α,ω‐ isocyanate‐telechelic poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐acrylamidohexanoic succinimide) soft segments is presented. The strategy includes reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) copolymerization and two post polymerization modification steps. The RAFT polymerizations result in copolymers with an activated ester proportion within the polymer chains of 8% N‐acryloxysuccinimide and 5% 6‐acrylamidohexanoic succinimide. The reactivity ratios of the monomer pairs were determined. In a first post polymerization reaction carboxylic acid homo telechelic polymers were prepared by reacting the ω‐dithiobenzoate end‐group with an excess of azobis(cyanovaleric acid). In a second modification step the α‐ and ω‐carboxylic acid end‐groups were reacted with hexamethylene diisocyanate and 100% isocyanate telechelic copolymers were obtained. Finally segmented polyurethanes were prepared by coupling hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) end capped soft segments with hard segments composed of 1,4‐butanediol and HDI. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

In this study, 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate and N‐isopropyl acrylamide was block grafted onto the polypropylene macroporous membrane surface by photo‐induced reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) radical polymerization with benzyl dithiobenzoate as the RAFT agent. The degree of grafting of poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) on the membrane surface increased with UV irradiation time and decreased with the chain transfer agent concentration increasing. The poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate)‐ grafted membranes were used as macro chain transfer agent for the further block graft copolymerization of N‐isopropyl acrylamide in the presence of free radical initiator. The degree of grafting of poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) increased with reaction time. Furthermore, the poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate)‐ grafted membrane with a degree of grafting of 0.48% (wt) showed the highest relative pure water flux and the best antifouling characteristics of protein dispersion. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
