Colour discrimination performance of honeybees was examined by training bees to a two-coloured disc presented on a vertical plane. Access to the food reward was through the centre of the disc. In one experiment, the upper half of the disc was yellow, and the lower half blue. In another experiment, this was vice versa. In either case, the learned disc was tested against each of a series of ten discs whose colour differed in either the upper or the lower half. A comparison between the results obtained in the two experiments reveals that colour discrimination is significantly better in the lower half of the frontal eye region than it is in the upper half. The results, similar to earlier results obtained in pattern discrimination tasks, cannot be explained by peripheral eye-region-specific specializations. It is proposed that the functional significance of the lower frontal visual field is based on more central neural mechanisms that might constitute an adaptation to the forager's natural needs. Whether contrast adaptation may enhance contrast discrimination is a question that has remained largely unresolved because of conflicting empirical evidence. Greenlee and Heitger (1988), for example, reported that contrast discrimination may be enhanced after contrast adaptation, while Maattanen and Koenderink (1991) did not. This paper aimed to account for the different conclusions reached by these independent researchers by manipulations of key differences that exist between the two studies. It is shown that contrast discrimination may be enhanced after adaptation, but that these effects can vary markedly across subjects and test conditions. Enhancements in contrast discrimination are reported to be significant when adapting and testing at low levels of contrast, but just significant at higher levels of contrast. For high contrast signals; enhancements are shown to be independent of temporal frequency but dependent upon viewing conditions. Under binocular viewing conditions, enhancements in contrast discrimination thresholds are shown to be significantly higher than under monocular viewing conditions. It is suggested that the different conclusions reached by Greenlee and Heitger and by Maattanen and Koenderink may be explained by their respective differences in viewing conditions. The former study used binocular, while the latter study used monocular viewing with an occluding eyepatch.  相似文献

Summary In crabs, there is behavioural evidence for colour discrimination from the portunidCarcinus and severalUca species, but in the same and related species only a single visual pigment has been found in the rhabdoms by microspectrophotometry. Micro-electrode recordings of the spectral sensitivity of single portunid photoreceptors may throw some light on this apparent inconsistency. Large changes in spectral sensitivity occur with light adaptation in the crabScylla serrata. Selective adaptation experiments rule out the possibility that the changes may be caused by the presence of a number of visual pigments or of antenna pigments. The results suggest that inScylla the absorption of a single visual pigment type is modified by different coloured filters in different photoreceptors and that this makes colour discrimination possible.  相似文献

Summary Microspectrophotometric examination of the visual receptors of the duck,Anas platyrhynchos, revealed four types of single cone containing visual pigments absorbing maximally at about 420 nm, 452 nm, 502 nm and 570 nm. A single population of double cones contained the P570 in both members. Rods absorbed maximally at 505 nm.Within the single cones, three types of oil droplet, acting as cut-off filters, were identified by the wavelength at which 50% transmission occurred, approximately 580, 515 and 450 nm. A further droplet, transparent throughout the visible spectrum, was also found in a small population of single cones. A fifth droplet type with a variable cutoff between 475–500 nm was located in the principal member of the double cones.The optical density of the anterior half of the eye, established by spectrophotometry, was used, in conjunction with the visual pigment and oil droplet combinations found within intact cones, to estimate the relative spectral sensitivities of the major cone types within the retina.  相似文献

There is a growing body of data on avian eyes, including measurements of visual pigment and oil droplet spectral absorption, and of receptor densities and their distributions across the retina. These data are sufficient to predict psychophysical colour discrimination thresholds for light-adapted eyes, and hence provide a basis for relating eye design to visual needs. We examine the advantages of coloured oil droplets, UV vision and tetrachromacy for discriminating a diverse set of avian plumage spectra under natural illumination. Discriminability is enhanced both by tetrachromacy and coloured oil droplets. Oil droplets may also improve colour constancy. Comparison of the performance of a pigeon's eye, where the shortest wavelength receptor peak is at 410 nm, with that of the passerine Leiothrix, where the ultraviolet-sensitive peak is at 365 nm, generally shows a small advantage to the latter, but this advantage depends critically on the noise level in the sensitivity mechanism and on the set of spectra being viewed. Summary Microspectrophotometric (msp) measurements were made of retinal oil droplets of 15 species of birds from 5 orders. The droplets were assigned to six categories on the basis of their cut-off wavelengths. Counts of oil droplets from the retinae of different species revealed large variations in the proportions of oil droplets of different categories. Cluster analysis was used to demonstrate relationships between 12 species of birds on the basis of their oil droplet complements. Selective attention is an important filter for complex environments where distractions compete with signals. Attention increases both the gamma-band power of cortical local field potentials and the spike-field coherence within the receptive field of an attended object. However, the mechanisms by which gamma-band activity enhances, if at all, the encoding of input signals are not well understood. We propose that gamma oscillations induce binomial-like spike-count statistics across noisy neural populations. Using simplified models of spiking neurons, we show how the discrimination of static signals based on the population spike-count response is improved with gamma induced binomial statistics. These results give an important mechanistic link between the neural correlates of attention and the discrimination tasks where attention is known to enhance performance. Further, they show how a rhythmicity of spike responses can enhance coding schemes that are not temporally sensitive.  相似文献

The ability of four horses (Equus caballus) to discriminate coloured (three shades of blue, green, red, and yellow) from grey (neutral density) stimuli, produced by back projected lighting filters, was investigated in a two response forced-choice procedure. Pushes of the lever in front of a coloured screen were occasionally reinforced, pushes of the lever in front of a grey screen were never reinforced. Each colour shade was randomly paired with a grey that was brighter, one that was dimmer, and one that approximately matched the colour in terms of brightness. Each horse experienced the colours in a different order, a new colour was started after 85% correct responses over five consecutive sessions or if accuracy showed no trend over sessions. All horses reached the 85% correct with blue versus grey, three horses did so with both yellow and green versus grey. All were above chance with red versus grey but none reached criterion. Further analysis showed the wavelengths of the green stimuli used overlapped with the yellow. The results are consistent with histological and behavioural studies that suggest that horses are dichromatic. They differ from some earlier data in that they indicate horses can discriminate yellow and blue, but that they may have deficiencies in discriminating red and green.  相似文献

Bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) discrimination of targets with broadband reflectance spectra was tested using simultaneous viewing conditions, enabling an accurate determination of the perceptual limit of colour discrimination excluding confounds from memory coding (experiment 1). The level of colour discrimination in bumblebees, and honeybees (Apis mellifera) (based upon previous observations), exceeds predictions of models considering receptor noise in the honeybee. Bumblebee and honeybee photoreceptors are similar in spectral shape and spacing, but bumblebees exhibit significantly poorer colour discrimination in behavioural tests, suggesting possible differences in spatial or temporal signal processing. Detection of stimuli in a Y-maze was evaluated for bumblebees (experiment 2) and honeybees (experiment 3). Honeybees detected stimuli containing both green-receptor-contrast and colour contrast at a visual angle of approximately 5 degrees , whilst stimuli that contained only colour contrast were only detected at a visual angle of 15 degrees . Bumblebees were able to detect these stimuli at a visual angle of 2.3 degrees and 2.7 degrees , respectively. A comparison of the experiments suggests a tradeoff between colour discrimination and colour detection in these two species, limited by the need to pool colour signals to overcome receptor noise. We discuss the colour processing differences and possible adaptations to specific ecological habitats.  相似文献

Although oscillations in membrane potential are a prominent feature of sensory, motor, and cognitive function, their precise role in signal processing remains elusive. Here we show, using a combination of in vivo, in vitro, and theoretical approaches, that both synaptically and intrinsically generated membrane potential oscillations dramatically improve action potential (AP) precision by removing the membrane potential variance associated with jitter-accumulating trains of APs. This increased AP precision occurred irrespective of cell type and—at oscillation frequencies ranging from 3 to 65 Hz—permitted accurate discernment of up to 1,000 different stimuli. At low oscillation frequencies, stimulus discrimination showed a clear phase dependence whereby inputs arriving during the trough and the early rising phase of an oscillation cycle were most robustly discriminated. Thus, by ensuring AP precision, membrane potential oscillations dramatically enhance the discriminatory capabilities of individual neurons and networks of cells and provide one attractive explanation for their abundance in neurophysiological systems.  相似文献

Dark-reared chicks were exposed to white light for 1 h at age 24 h. At 48 h these chicks, and others kept in the dark throughout, were given the opportunity to obtain a heat reward by choosing the correct arm in a Y maze. The discriminanda were red and blue illuminated circles, each being the positive stimulus for half the chicks. Light-exposure resulted in faster learning, especially when the positive stimulus was blue. This is taken as further support for the view that brief exposure to light activates the visual system non-specifically, affecting many kinds of visually guided behavior.  相似文献

A comprehensive account of wavelength discrimination and colour saturation discrimination is given in terms of optimum probabilistic signal detection. The theory is a logical deduction from statistical estimation theory of the visual estimate of the spectral parameters of the stimulus. In place of geometrical concepts associated with colour-space geometry, stimulus discriminability is determined by optimum decision rules given by likelihood ratio tests on statistics that are postulated for the trichromatic responses. The classical line element theory and its formulations are deduced to be discriminability measures between signals. The different mathematical forms of classical theory are shown to correspond to different statistical constraints.  相似文献

The colour discrimination of individual free-flying honeybees (Apis mellifera) was tested with simultaneous and successive viewing conditions for a variety of broadband reflectance stimuli. For simultaneous viewing bees used form vision to discriminate patterned target stimuli from homogeneous coloured distractor stimuli, and for successive discrimination bees were required to discriminate between homogeneously coloured stimuli. Bees were significantly better at a simultaneous discrimination task, and we suggest this is explained by the inefficiency with which the bees brain can code and retrieve colour information from memory when viewing stimuli successively. Using simultaneous viewing conditions bees discriminated between the test stimuli at a level equivalent to 1 just-noticeable-difference for human colour vision. Discrimination of colours by bees with simultaneous viewing conditions exceeded previous estimates of what is possible considering models of photoreceptor noise measured in bees, which suggests spatial and/or temporal summation of colour signals for fine discrimination tasks. The results show that when behavioural experiments are used to collect data about the mechanisms facilitating colour discrimination in animals, it is important to consider the effects of the stimulus viewing conditions on results.  相似文献

人大庆油田油层水中分离得到1株假单胞菌P-21,对其发酵液进行研究。室内实验证明,8%的P-21发酵液与原油混合,在45℃的条件下作用24h,对原油的降粘率达到57.8%,防蜡率达到80%。而10%的P-21发酵液可能使人工岩芯中的原油采收率提高11.2%,同时使注入压力下降38.4%。因此,P-21在微生物提高原油采收率中有很大的应用潜力。  相似文献

Summary The photoreceptors of the penguin,Spheniscus humboldti, were examined using a microspectrophotometer. The cones could be divided into three classes based on their visual pigment absorbance spectra [max 403, 450 and 543 nm (Fig. 1)], and into five classes based on their visual pigment-oil droplet combination (Fig. 4). Oil droplets were of three types (Fig. 2). The rods contained a rhodopsin with max at 504 nm. No double cones were observed. The penguin should be capable of good wavelength discrimination in the blue-green region of the spectrum but with poor discrimination at longer wavelengths. It is concluded that the spectral properties of the cone types indicate that the photopic vision ofS. humboldti is adapted to the spectral qualities of its aquatic environment.  相似文献

Whether premating isolation is achieved by male‐specific, female‐specific or sex‐independent assortative preferences often depends on the underlying evolutionary processes. Here we test mate preferences of males presented with females of different allopatric colour variants of the cichlid fish Tropheus sp., a Lake Tanganyika endemic with rich geographical colour pattern variation, in which the strength of sexual isolation varies between populations. We conducted two‐way mate choice experiments to compare behaviour of males of a red‐bodied morph (population Moliro) towards females from their own population with behaviour towards females from four allopatric populations at different stages of phylogenetic and phenotypic divergence. Males courted same‐population females significantly more intensely than females of other populations, and reduced their heteromorphic courtship efforts both with increasing genetic and increasing phenotypic distinctness of the females. In particular, females of a closely related red‐bodied population received significantly more courtship than either genetically distinct, similarly coloured females (‘Kirschfleck’ morph) or genetically related, differently coloured females (‘yellow‐blotch’ morph), both of which were courted similarly. Genetically and phenotypically distinct females (Tropheus polli) were not courted at all. Consistent with previous female‐choice experiments, female courtship activity also decreased with increasing genetic distance from the males’ population. Given successful experimental and natural introgression between colour morphs and the pervasive allopatry of related variants, we consider it unlikely that assortative preferences of both sexes were driven by direct selection during periods of secondary contact or, in turn, drove colour pattern differentiation in allopatry. Rather, we suggest that sexual isolation evolved as by‐product of allopatric divergence.  相似文献

Colour constancy is generally assumed to arise from a combination of perceptual constancy mechanisms operating to partially discount illumination changes and relational mechanisms involved in judging the colour relationships between object surfaces. Here we examined the characteristics of these mechanisms using a 'yes/no' task. Subjects judged whether a target colour patch embedded in an array of coloured patches (a) stayed the same across a simulated temporal illuminant change (local colour judgement), or (b) changed in a manner consistent with the illuminant change (relational colour judgement). The colour of the target patch remained constant in one-third of the trials, changed in accord with the illuminant shift in another third, and shifted partially with the illuminant change in the remaining third. We found that perceptual constancy was relatively weak and relational constancy strong, as assessed using a modified colour constancy index. Randomising the spatial positions of coloured patches across the illuminant change did not affect subjects' constancy indices. Application of signal detection analysis revealed some otherwise hidden effects. In the case of relational judgements, subjects adopted more conservative criteria (fewer true and false positives) with randomisation, maintaining a constant level of discrimination performance (d'). For local judgements, randomisation led to small increases in performance but no changes in criteria. We conclude that signal detection theory provides a useful tool to supplement conventional approaches to understanding colour constancy.  相似文献
