The draft tube of a hydraulic turbine is the component where the flow exiting the runner is decelerated, thereby converting the excess of kinetic energy into static pressure. In the case of machine refurbishment of an existing power plant, most of the time only the runner and the guide vanes are currently modified. For financial and safety reasons, the spiral casing and the draft tube are seldom redesigned, even if these components present some undesirable behaviour. In some cases, the installation of an upgraded runner leads to a peculiar and undesirable efficiency drop as the discharge is increased above the best efficiency point value. It is found to be related to a corresponding sudden variation in the draft tube pressure recovery coefficient at the same discharge.The swirling flow exiting the runner is complex and highly turbulent. The radial velocity is rarely measured because a quite complicated measurement setup is needed. However, this velocity component is greatly needed in order to properly initialize the numerical simulations, and its influence is important in spite of its small magnitude. Velocity measurements downstream of the runner include radial component made at CREMHyG (Grenoble) by LDV, and PIV techniques are presented. An analytical formulation for this velocity component based on the formulation for the conical diffuser and on the three vortices structure is proposed and compared with measurements.  相似文献

Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) has been used in a wind tunnel study to measure the velocity field of the trailing vortices from the blades of a horizontal axis wind-turbine (HWAT) in yaw. The creation of the trailing vortex circulation is shown to vary as a function of the phase angle of the rotor and the angle of yaw between the wind and turbine rotor. The strength of the convecting vorticity was also shown to vary with time. The initial formation of the vortex is shown determined by the flow expansion angle while in yawed flows the developing vortex is then influenced by the vortex sheet shed from the inboard blade trailing edge. An experimental study was conducted to characterize the dynamic wind loads and evolution of the unsteady vortex and turbulent flow structures in the near wake of a horizontal axis wind turbine model placed in an atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel. In addition to measuring dynamic wind loads (i.e., aerodynamic forces and bending moments) acting on the wind turbine model by using a high-sensitive force-moment sensor unit, a high-resolution digital particle image velocimetry (PIV) system was used to achieve flow field measurements to quantify the characteristics of the turbulent vortex flow in the near wake of the wind turbine model. Besides conducting “free-run” PIV measurements to determine the ensemble-averaged statistics of the flow quantities such as mean velocity, Reynolds stress, and turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) distributions in the wake flow, “phase-locked” PIV measurements were also performed to elucidate further details about evolution of the unsteady vortex structures in the wake flow in relation to the position of the rotating turbine blades. The effects of the tip-speed-ratio of the wind turbine model on the dynamic wind loads and wake flow characteristics were quantified in the terms of the variations of the aerodynamic thrust and bending moment coefficients of the wind turbine model, the evolution of the helical tip vortices and the unsteady vortices shedding from the blade roots and turbine nacelle, the deceleration of the incoming airflows after passing the rotation disk of the turbine blades, the TKE and Reynolds stress distributions in the near wake of the wind turbine model. The detailed flow field measurements were correlated with the dynamic wind load measurements to elucidate underlying physics in order to gain further insight into the characteristics of the dynamic wind loads and turbulent vortex flows in the wakes of wind turbines for the optimal design of the wind turbines operating in atmospheric boundary layer winds.  相似文献

 Velocity measurements by two-component laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) and laser sheet visualizations were used to analyze the 3D turbulent flow field in a stirred tank, for the purpose of reducing the intricacy of the hydrodynamics to more simple models. We first deal with the mean flow field measured, and the instantaneous visualized patterns, to appreciate the deviation from steadiness and predict the dispersion of particles from the mean motion alone. The study then focuses on the discharge flow from the agitator (Rushton turbine). The jet at the exit from the turbine is modeled in mean values. The flow instability as shown experimentally indicates that the Reynolds number plays no part in this phenomenon. A study based on dynamical system theory, considering a frequency modulation of the flow, shows the possibility of describing rather simply the deterministic component in the velocity fluctuation due to the blades. This paper examines the flow physics and principles of force production on a cycloidal rotor (cyclorotor) in forward flight. The cyclorotor considered here consists of two blades rotating about a horizontal axis, with cyclic pitch angle variation about the blade quarter-chord. The flow field at the rotor mid-span is analyzed using smoke flow visualization and particle image velocimeV are compared with flow fields predicted using 2D CFD and time-averaged force measurements acquired in an open-jet wind tunnel at three advance ratios. It is shown that the experimental flow field is nearly two dimensional at μ = 0.73 allowing for qualitative comparisons to be made with CFD. The incoming flow velocity decreases in magnitude as the flow passes through the retreating (upper) half of the rotor and is attributed to power extraction by the blades. A significant increase in flow velocity is observed across the advancing (lower) half of the rotor. The aerodynamic analysis demonstrates that the blades accelerate the flow through the lower aft region of the rotor, where they operate in a high dynamic pressure environment. This is consistent with CFD-predicted values of instantaneous aerodynamic forces which reveal that the aft section of the rotor is the primary region of force production. Phase-averaged flow field measurements showed two blade wakes in the flow, formed by each of the two blades. Analysis of the blades at several azimuthal positions revealed two significant blade-wake interactions. The locations of these blade-wake interactions are correlated with force peaks in the CFD-predicted instantaneous blade forces and highlight their importance to the generation of lift and propulsive force of the cyclorotor.  相似文献

A one and a half stage transonic turbine was tested using a two component laser–doppler–velocimetry system. The measurements were carried out in order to record rotor phase resolved velocity, flow angle and turbulence distributions upstream and downstream of the second stator row at several different angular stator–stator positions (“clocking” positions). Altogether, the measurements downstream of the second stator were performed for ten different clocking positions and upstream of the second stator for two different clocking positions. These different clocking positions have a significant influence on the flow field upstream and downstream of the second stator. Furthermore error estimation and a discussion of the tracer particle response are discussed.  相似文献

The present study experimentally investigated the effect of a simulated single-horn glaze ice accreted on rotor blades on the vortex structures in the wake of a horizontal axis wind turbine by using the stereoscopic particle image velocimetry(Stereo-PIV) technique. During the experiments, four horizontal axis wind turbine models were tested, and both "free-run" and "phase-locked" Stereo-PIV measurements were carried out. Based on the "free-run"measurements, it was found that because of the simulated single-horn glaze ice, the shape, vorticity, and trajectory of tip vortices were changed significantly, and less kinetic energy of the airflow could be harvested by the wind turbine. In addition, the "phase-locked" results indicated that the presence of simulated single-horn glaze ice resulted in a dramatic reduction of the vorticity peak of the tip vortices. Moreover,as the length of the glaze ice increased, both root and tip vortex gaps were found to increase accordingly.  相似文献

This paper presents the design and implementation of velocimetry techniques applicable to the analysis of microfluidic systems. The application of both micron-resolution particle image velocimetry (micro-PIV) and particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) to the measurement of velocity fields within micromachined fluidic channels is presented. The particle tracking system uses epifluorescent microscopy, CCD imaging, and specialized image interrogation algorithms to provide microscale velocity measurement resolution. The flow field in a straight channel section is measured using cross-correlation micro-PIV and compared to the analytical solution for a measured mass flow rate. Velocity field measurements of the flow at the intersection of a cross-channel are also presented and compared with simulations from a commercially available flow solver, CFD-ACE+. Discussions regarding flow seeding, imaging optics, and the flow setup for measuring flows in microfabricated fluidic devices are presented. A simple process for estimating measurement uncertainty of the in-plane velocity measurements caused by three-dimensional Brownian motion is described. A definition for the measurement depth for PTV measurements is proposed. The agreement between measured and predicted values lends further support to the argument that liquid microflows with characteristic dimensions of order 50-μm dimension channels follow macroscale flow theory.  相似文献

At part load conditions, Francis turbines are subject to the emergence of a hydrodynamic instability in their draft tube, referred to as precessing vortex rope. It induces pressure pulsations in the water passages at the precession frequency of the vortex, leading to additional vibrations and dynamic loads on the runner blades. The prediction of both the dynamic behaviour of the vortex rope and the resulting dynamic loads over a wide operating range is of importance to improve the runner design and robustness on the one hand and to assess additional fatigue and related maintenance costs on the other hand. Such a prediction, either with numerical simulation or reduced scale physical model tests, remains however challenging. The present paper aims at introducing a methodology to assess the vortex behaviour, the related pressure fluctuations and the resulting dynamic strains on the runner over the complete part load operating range. It is based on reduced scale physical model tests of a Francis turbine, including the measurement of the pressure and the load on the runner with instrumented blades. It is shown that the influence of both the discharge factor and speed factor on the vortex dynamics behaviour and related pressure fluctuations can be represented by a single parameter; the swirl number. The correlation with the swirl number is further extended to the dynamic strains induced by the vortex rope on the runner blades. Similar mechanical load and pressure measurements are finally performed on the full-scale machine during a power ramp-up and the results are compared to the empirical correlations established on the reduced scale physical model.  相似文献

A two-color digital particle image velocimetry and accelerometry (DPIV and DPIA) measurement technique is described that records the velocity and acceleration fields of both the solid and liquid phases simultaneously. Measurements were taken at turbulent conditions of a vertical pipe flow using glass spheres as the solid phase and fluorescent particles to indicate fluid phase motion. Nd-YAG pulse lasers acted as illumination sources and images were recorded by two monochrome CCD cameras. The two-color aspect of the technique was realized by placing optical filters in front of the cameras to discriminate between the phases. Cross-correlations and auto-correlations were applied to determine velocity and acceleration fields of the two phases. Results showing some of the capabilities of the technique as applied to a two-phase pipe flow experiment are provided. For the condition studied, it was found that there was turbulence suppression due to the solid phase and that the statistics associated with the acceleration probability distribution were different for the solid and fluid phases.  相似文献

The over-tip casing of the high-pressure turbine in a modern gas turbine engine is subjected to strong convective heat transfer that can lead to thermally induced failure (burnout) of this component. However, the complicated flow physics in this region is dominated by the close proximity of the moving turbine blades, which gives rise to significant temporal variations at the blade-passing frequency. The understanding of the physical processes that control the casing metal temperature is still limited and this fact has significant implications for the turbine design strategy. A series of experiments has been performed that seeks to address some of these important issues. This article reports the measurements of time-mean heat transfer and time-mean static pressure that have been made on the over-tip casing of a transonic axial-flow turbine operating at flow conditions that are representative of those found in modern gas turbine engines. Time-resolved measurements of these flow variables (that reveal the details of the blade-tip/casing interaction physics) are presented in a companion paper. The nozzle guide vane exit flow conditions in these experiments were a Mach number of 0.93 and a Reynolds number of 2.7 × 106 based on nozzle guide vane mid-height axial chord. The axial and circumferential distributions of heat transfer rate, adiabatic wall temperature, Nusselt number and static pressure are presented. The data reveal large axial variations in the wall heat flux and adiabatic wall temperature that are shown to be primarily associated with the reduction in flow stagnation temperature through the blade row. The heat flux falls by a factor of 6 (from 120 to 20 kW/m2). In contrast, the Nusselt number falls by just 36% between the rotor inlet plane and 80% rotor axial chord; additionally, this drop is near to linear from 20% to 80% rotor axial chord. The circumferential variations in heat transfer rate are small, implying that the nozzle guide vanes do not produce a strong variation in casing boundary layer properties in the region measured. The casing static pressure measurements follow trends that can be expected from the blade loading distribution, with maximum values immediately upstream of the rotor inlet plane, and then a decreasing trend with axial position as the flow is turned and accelerated in the relative frame of reference. The time-mean static pressure measurements on the casing wall also reveal distinct circumferential variations that are small in comparison to the large pressure gradient in the axial direction.  相似文献

Film cooling downstream of a model turbine blade trailing edge has been studied experimentally. High resolution particle image velocimetry was used to obtain spatially resolved mean velocity and turbulence measurements in the immediate vicinity of the trailing edge breakout. The mean velocity measurements imply the presence of a pair of counter-rotating longitudinal vortices shed from the sides of the breakout lands. The turbulent shear stress measurements above the breakout are significantly intensified as blowing ratio is increased. These results suggest that there is a strong mixing between the film cooling slot jets and the mainstream flow which degrades the film cooling effectiveness.  相似文献

Determination of the aerodynamic configuration of wake is the key to analysis and evaluation of the rotor aerodynamic characteristics of a horizontal-axis wind turbine.According to the aerodynamic configuration, the real magnitude and direction of the onflow velocity at the rotor blade can be determined, and subsequently, the aerodynamic force on the rotor can be determined. The commonly employed wake aerodynamic models are of the cylindrical form instead of the actual expanding one. This is because the influence of the radial component of the induced velocity on the wake configuration is neglected. Therefore, this model should be called a "linear model". Using this model means that the induced velocities at the rotor blades and aerodynamic loads on them would be inexact. An approximately accurate approach is proposed in this paper to determine the so-called "nonlinear" wake aerodynamic configuration by means of the potential theory,where the influence of all three coordinate components of the induced velocity on wake aerodynamic configuration is taken into account to obtain a kind of expanding wake that approximately looks like an actual one. First, the rotor aerodynamic model composed of axial(central), bound, and trailing vortexes is established with the help of the finite aspect wing theory. Then, the Biot-Savart formula for the potential flow theory is used to derive a set of integral equations to evaluate the three components of the induced velocity at any point within the wake. The numerical solution to the integral equations is found,and the loci of all elementary trailing vortex filaments behind the rotor are determined thereafter. Finally, to formulate an actual wind turbine rotor, using the nonlinear wake model, the induced velocity everywhere in the wake, especially that at the rotor blade,is obtained in the case of various tip speed ratios and compared with the wake boundary in a neutral atmospheric boundary layer. Hereby, some useful and referential conclusions are offered for the aerodynamic computation and design of the rotor of the horizontal-axis wind turbine.  相似文献

This paper presents detailed turbulence measurements in a two-dimensional, transonic, double passage turbine cascade. Particle image velocimetry was used to obtain mean velocity and turbulence measurements all around a single turbine blade within about 2 mm of the blade and wall surfaces. The passage walls were designed using an optimization procedure so that the blade surface pressure distribution matches that of the blade in an infinite cascade. The resulting experimental model captures much of the complexity of a real turbine stage (including high streamline curvature, strong accelerations, and shocks) in a passage with a continuous wall shape, allowing for high measurement resolution and well controlled boundary conditions for comparison to CFD. The measurements show that in the inviscid regions of the passage the absolute level of the turbulent fluctuations does not change significantly as the flow accelerates, while the local turbulence intensity drops rapidly as the flow accelerates. These results provide a benchmark data set that can be used to improve turbulence models.  相似文献

Acceleration is a fundamental quantity in fluid mechanics because it reflects the sum of all forces (pressure and viscous) present within the flow. However, measurements of acceleration have been difficult to achieve relative to the ease with which fluid velocity can be measured. A particle image accelerometer (PIA) has been developed to measure Eulerian acceleration fields by time-differencing successive measurements of the Eulerian velocity field as measured by particle image velocimetry (PIV). The measurements can also be made in uniformly translating frames. With current video camera technology, it is often not possible to measure the two velocity fields with a time separation sufficiently small enough to permit accurate finite difference approximation of the time derivative. A two-CCD-camera system has been developed to alleviate this limitation. Polarization filtering is utilized to separate the particle images viewed by each camera. The polarization filtering is achieved using cross-polarized light-sheets and a polarization filter just upstream of the imaging optics of the cameras. In this manner, PIV measurements can be achieved easily at time delays several orders of magnitude smaller than the shutter-time of the CCD cameras. The accuracy of the acceleration measurements is determined by numerical finite differencing errors and random noise and bias errors associated with the measurement of velocity. These errors, and methods of compensating for them, are studied.  相似文献

Measuring velocity spectra in turbulent flows requires methods providing a high temporal resolution and a low measurement uncertainty. Hot-wire anemometry is often used, but it is intrusive. Laser Doppler anemometry is non-intrusive, but due to the statistical arrival of individual tracers provides no constant measurement rate. We therefore propose the use of Doppler global velocimetry (DGV), which is a contactless method allowing temporally equidistant measurements of continuous signals. Additionally, 2d measurements are possible instead of single point measurements. The commonly applied slow cameras are substituted by a fibre coupled detector array consisting of 25 avalanche photo diodes, which increases temporal resolution up to 10 μs. Contrarily to conventional DGV, a sinusoidal laser frequency modulation enables omitting the reference detector array. A correction of beam splitting and image misalignment errors is thus not necessary, but disturbances due to temporal fluctuations of the scattered light can occur and have to be reduced by increasing the modulation frequency. We validate the proposed system capability of synchronously measuring velocity spectra at multiple points in turbulent flows by presenting experimental results. The acquired velocity spectra in a wind tunnel experiment show good agreement with hot-wire comparison measurements within 0.1 m/s. An uncertainty analysis is given, which allows the achievable measurement uncertainty to be estimated as a function of the desired temporal resolution. An uncertainty down to 0.2 m/s can, for example, be achieved assuming a desired temporal resolution of 1 ms. These promising results open new perspectives for turbulence and correlation studies in flows such as to investigate the turbulence characteristics behind a truncated cylinder attached to a plate or the inlet of an aircraft turbine for flow characterisation in industry.  相似文献

 The technical basis and system set-up of a dual-plane stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (PIV) system, which can obtain the flow velocity (all three components) fields at two spatially separated planes simultaneously, is summarized. The simultaneous measurements were achieved by using two sets of double-pulsed Nd:Yag lasers with additional optics to illuminate the objective fluid flow with two orthogonally linearly polarized laser sheets at two spatially separated planes, as proposed by Kaehler and Kompenhans in 1999. The light scattered by the tracer particles illuminated by laser sheets with orthogonal linear polarization were separated by using polarizing beam-splitter cubes, then recorded by high-resolution CCD cameras. A three-dimensional in-situ calibration procedure was used to determine the relationships between the 2-D image planes and three-dimensional object fields for both position mapping and velocity three-component reconstruction. Unlike conventional two-component PIV systems or single-plane stereoscopic PIV systems, which can only get one-component of vorticity vectors, the present dual-plane stereoscopic PIV system can provide all the three components of the vorticity vectors and various auto-correlation and cross-correlation coefficients of flow variables instantaneously and simultaneously. The present dual-plane stereoscopic PIV system was applied to measure an air jet mixing flow exhausted from a lobed nozzle. Various vortex structures in the lobed jet mixing flow were revealed quantitatively and instantaneously. In order to evaluate the measurement accuracy of the present dual-plane stereoscopic PIV system, the measurement results were compared with the simultaneous measurement results of a laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) system. It was found that both the instantaneous data and ensemble-averaged values of the stereoscopic PIV measurement results and the LDV measurement results agree well. For the ensemble-averaged values of the out-of-plane velocity component at comparison points, the differences between the stereoscopic PIV and LDV measurement results were found to be less than 2%.
