New topology designs for the future expansion of the academic network of the Gulf countries

This article describes several new design aspects for the future expansion of GULFNET—the research information network of the Gulf countries. The design methodology developed in the paper takes into account expected traffic growth, technology considerations and user demands. Several scenarios for future GULFNET topologies are presented and evaluated. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Computer Simulation for the Evaluation of the IBM-SNA Congestion Management Method on GULFNET

The work presented in this article aims at using an available computer simulation package for the evaluation of the operation of the IBM-SNA-VRPC congestion management method on the present state of GULFNET, and a future design of the network that includes more nodes and provides higher reliability.

Design of versatile academic infrastructure for multilayer network services

This paper describes the network design and configurations of the new Japanese academic infrastructure, called SINET3, which provides a rich variety of network services to more than 700 universities and research institutions. Since the start of full-scale operations in June 2007, the network has expanded its services to include multi-layer transfer services (IP, Ethernet, and layer-1), enriched virtual private network services (L3VPN, L2VPN, VPLS, and L1VPN), enhanced QoS services (packet-based and circuit-based), and brand-new layer-1 bandwidth-on-demand (BoD) services. This paper explains how the network provides these various network services on a single network platform by effectively configuring leading-edge networking components, such as high-performance IP routers, layer- 1 switches, and a BoD server. Evaluations of the network design and configurations confirmed that the networking functions were effectively coordinated. The procedures and techniques related to the configuration validation that covered all phases of the network design and construction are also presented.     

SimEON: an open-source elastic optical network simulator for academic and industrial purposes

In comparison with wavelength division multiplexing optical networks, elastic optical networks are much more flexible, presenting an efficient alternative to use the frequency spectrum to establish call requests in a scenario with different transmission bit rates and modulation schemes. Due to the variety of optical devices, node architectures and physical topologies, it is difficult to implement optical network prototypes to analyze operational scenarios in terms of blocking probability of call requests, the impact of capital and operational expenditures and energy consumption, for example. To our knowledge, there is no available open-source simulation tool exclusively for elastic optical networks in the literature. There are a few simulation tools that were used to obtain results for optical networks but most of their source codes are unavailable. The state of the art of these simulators and our developed simulation tool called Simulator for Elastic Optical Networks (SimEON) are presented. SimEON is an open-source software. It is developed under the GNU Lesser General Public License and takes into account principles of software engineering. In this article, we present the characteristics of our simulator, its architecture and considered parameters, along with some examples of the simulations that can be executed on it.

THE PN2I NETWORK： A SCALABLE BANYAN NETWORK

To design a Banyan network with an arbitrary even-sized port number, the PN2I network is proposed. The PN2I network can be divided into two classes： the complete and incomplete versions. A simple routing algorithm is given, but in the incomplete PN2I networks, this routing algorithm fails to make the traffic in links even, which deteriorates the performance badly. Thus a new routing algorithm is proposed, which makes the incomplete PN2I networks behave almost the same as the PN2I networks with respect to the performance issues.     

Early diffusion of smartphones in OECD and BRICS countries: An examination of the effects of platform competition and indirect network effects

Employing the Gompertz model, this study examines macro-level adoption factors of early smartphone diffusion in OECD and BRICS countries. The results of the data analysis suggest that mobile OS competition, mobile network standard competition, open source OS share (platform openness), and price influence the early diffusion of smartphones in OECD countries. However, in BRICS countries, open source OS share (platform openness) and price are the main factors of smartphone diffusion. As the smartphone market continues to grow, it seems that the effects of mobile platform competition and indirect network effects on smartphone diffusion may co-exist in global smartphone markets. In addition, the results of the data analysis suggest that a platform (standard)-neutral policy is important in the growth stage of smartphone markets.     

The internationalization of engineering education: a tale of two countries

Two international exchange programs in engineering between universities in Japan and Canada, are described in order to explain the significant benefits gained by the undergraduate and graduate students, as well as the academic staff who participate, and to highlight key principles generally followed in the design and execution of exchange programs. One notable and successful engineering exchange program is between the University of Waterloo, located in Southern Ontario, Canada, and Tottori University in Japan, while the other is between the University of Waterloo and Kyoto University in Japan. Both of these programs include foreign students taking courses for credit or audit at the host university, and, for the case of graduate students, also receiving guidance in their research. Moreover, upon completion of one academic semester in Japan, all of the undergraduate Waterloo students studying at Tottori University are employed in Japanese industry for three to four months before returning to Canada. Of paramount importance to the education of the participating undergraduate and graduate students is the opportunity to learn, by first-hand experience, the language and culture of a foreign country. In fact, one of the key findings of a survey completed by Canadian and Japanese students who took part in the exchange programs, is that living in a different culture greatly enhanced their own personal development. The addition of this international perspective to a solid education in engineering opens many doors of opportunity for exchange program alumni, who are well prepared to fully participate in the global marketplace of the 21st century, and to assist society in responsibly reaching an equitable and sustainable future.     

The rhetorical nature of academic research funding

To better understand the complex relationship between academic researchers and funding agencies, the author interviewed 15 academic researchers regarding their views, suggestions, and difficulties in coordinating the proposal process. Data suggest that academic research funding is highly rhetorical, and that successful researchers have well-developed managerial, organizational, and communication skills. The author concludes by describing the competitiveness and complexity of contemporary research relationships, and by briefly outlining guidelines for improving collaboration between researchers and funders     

Wide area ubiquitous network: the network operator's view of a sensor network

This article describes a network concept called the wide area ubiquitous network (WAUN) and its research activities. WAUN is a network for sensors and actuators, and can support low-end wireless terminals, which are expected to be used for new applications. Among the many types of R&D being performed in the WAUN project, this article focuses on the feasibility of its basic feature and target. The basic feature is ?wide coverage using very-low-power-consumption terminals,? and its specific target is a ?5-km cell radius using 10-mW transmission power terminals with a battery life of 10 years.? The results of a basic field experiment and a laboratory experiment suggest that the target seems to be feasible using wireless technologies such as diversity reception (with additional future effort to improve the packet error rate for use in business districts) and LSI technologies such as a power switch fabricated in a CMOS/SOI LSI.     

The future of the intelligent network

This article examines the role the intelligent network (IN) can play as carriers move to next-generation networks. It discusses possible transition scenarios and examines how the IN could interwork with the Internet and packet-based networks to produce new hybrid services. The article presents a view of a fully converged network, and concludes that IN will continue have a vital role in voice and data services

The Batcher-banyan self-routing network: universality andsimplification

It is shown that the Batcher-banyan network performs as a universal self-routing switch when inputs with unassigned destinations are present. This is demonstrated by first proving that banyan networks can realize permutations represented by bitonic sequences, and then noting that the sorted output of the Batcher network can be viewed as a bitonic sequence. Two methods are proposed for reducing the complexity of the Batcher-banyan network. In the first method, one stage of the banyan network is eliminated by assigning proper destination tags to the unassigned inputs. In the second, a self-routing switch based on the binary-radix sorting scheme is shown to be more economical for a small number of lines     

The optical network control plane: state of the standards and deployment

The notion of an optical control plane has rapidly ascended from being a mere concept to a detailed set of protocol standards developed with broad industry participation. In this article we present a brief overview of optical control plane architecture and the associated protocols. We then examine the business drivers and inhibitors behind the optical control plane effort, the current state of the standards, interoperability status, and the open issues that need to be resolved before widescale deployment of this new technology can begin.     

Tackling the needs of foreign academic writers: a case study

Foreign engineers and scientists must publish their research in professional journals in English, but they often lack the proficiency and skills to do so successfully. The commentary describes a course that teaches these skills to Ph.D. students before they enter the job market. The techniques described are also effective tools for teaching professionals in the workplace
