The study includes calculations for both the thermal performance and the mechanical behaviour of a gas-filled, flat plate solar collector without external gas expansion, i.e., a collector with varying gas volume and gas pressure and movement in both cover glass and absorber. Classical theories for the thermal performance are combined with a finite-element method to investigate which factors have an impact from the mechanical stress point of view. This article describes major results for collectors with copper and aluminium absorbers combined with different inert gases. It is shown that a collector may be designed which uses less material than a standard collector but achieves at least the same thermal performance, by using a thinner collector and a thinner absorber and a suitable gas filling other than air. If copper is used in absorber and tubes, a 0.15 mm thick absorber together with a tube-to-tube distance of 103 mm results in the same performance as a 0.3 mm absorber with a 144 mm tube-to-tube distance, but the former will use 25% less material. The use of copper can be further reduced if the absorber is made of aluminium and the tubes are made of copper. The factor of safety for thick (>0.5 mm) aluminium absorbers is, however, not as large as it is for copper absorbers.  相似文献

Compared to solar water heaters, high-temperature solar air heaters have received relatively little investigation and have resulted in few commercial products. However, in the context of a humidification–dehumidification (HD) desalination cycle, air heating offers significant performance gains for the cycle. Heating at a constant temperature and constant heat output is also important for HD cycle performance. The use of built in phase change material (PCM) storage is found to produce consistent air outlet temperatures throughout the day or night. In this study, the PCM has been implemented directly below the absorber plate. Using a two dimensional transient finite element model, it is found that a PCM layer of 8 cm below the absorber plate is sufficient to produce a consistent output temperature close to the PCM melting temperature with a time-averaged collector thermal efficiency of 35%. An experimental energy storage collector with an 8 cm thick PCM layer was built and tested in a variety of weather and operating conditions. Experimental results show strong agreement with model in all cases.  相似文献

The present paper describes the development and testing of an efficient single-glass air solar collector with an absorber plate made of recyclable aluminum cans (RAC). This collector was designed as a proposal to use recycle recyclable materials to build absorber plates of air solar collectors at an acceptable cost. The absorber plate of the collector consisted of eight circular cross section air flow channels of 128 recyclable aluminium cans. Each channel was built with 16 recyclable cans blackened with common opaque black paint of 0.903 absorptance and 0.097 reflectance. The design parameters to determine the size of the collector were obtained by implementing a simulation model for double flow air solar collectors. Also, to determine the appropriate configuration for a uniform air flow distribution inside the eight RAC air channels, a hydrodynamic numerical study was carried out. The RAC air solar collector designed and built was tested outdoors following the ASHRAE 93-86 standard to determine the time constant, the thermal efficiency and the incidence angle modifier. Comparison between the predicted theoretical temperatures and the measured ones were in good agreement. Comparison between the thermal efficiency of the RAC air solar collector with the ones reported in the literature is presented.  相似文献

Concentrating solar thermal systems offer a promising method for large scale solar energy collection. Although concentrating collectors are generally thought of as large-scale stand-alone systems, there is a huge opportunity to use novel concentrating solar thermal systems for rooftop applications such as domestic hot water, industrial process heat and solar air conditioning for commercial, industrial and institutional buildings. This paper describes the thermal performance of a new low-cost solar thermal micro-concentrating collector (MCT), which uses linear Fresnel reflectors, and is designed to operate at temperatures up to 220 °C. The modules of this collector system are approximately 3 m long by 1 m wide and 0.3 m high. The objective of the study is to optimise the design to maximise the overall thermal efficiency. The absorber is contained in a sealed enclosure to minimise convective losses. The main heat losses are due to natural convection inside the enclosure and radiation heat transfer from the absorber tube. In this paper we present the results of a computational and experimental investigation of radiation and convection heat transfer in order to understand the heat loss mechanisms. A computational model for the prototype collector has been developed using ANSYS–CFX, a commercial computational fluid dynamics software package. The numerical results are compared to experimental measurements of the heat loss from the absorber, and flow visualisation within the cavity. This paper also presents new correlations for the Nusselt number as a function of Rayleigh number.  相似文献

The development of absorption chillers activated by renewable heat sources has increased due mainly to the increase in primary energy consumption that causes problems such as greenhouse gases and air pollution among others. These machines, which could be a good substitute for compression systems, could be used in the residential and food sectors which require a great variety of refrigeration conditions. Nevertheless, the low efficiency of these machines makes it necessary to enhance heat and mass transfer processes in the critical components, mainly the absorber, in order to reduce their large size. This study used ammonia–water as the working fluid to look at how absorption takes place in a plate heat exchanger operating under typical conditions of absorption chillers, driven by low temperature heat sources. Experiments were carried out using a corrugated plate heat exchanger model NB51, with three channels, where ammonia vapor was injected in bubble mode into the solution in the central channel. The results achieved for the absorption flux were in the range of 0.0025–0.0063 kg m?2 s?1, the solution heat transfer coefficient varied between 2.7 and 5.4 kW m?2 K?1, the absorber thermal load from 0.5 to 1.3 kW. In addition, the effect of the absorber operating conditions on the most significant efficiency parameters was analyzed. The increase in pressure, solution and cooling flow rates positively affect the absorber performance, on the other hand an increase in the concentration, cooling, and solution temperature negatively affects the absorber performance.  相似文献

A detailed experimental study was undertaken to analyse the natural convective heat transfer in CPC cavities, a complex function of collector orientation, geometrical aspect ratios and thermal boundary conditions at the enclosure walls. Results are reported for CPC solar collectors with full-, three quarter- and half-height reflectors, CR = 2 and a 100 mm wide flat plate absorber. Experiments were conducted using a purpose built solar simulator under controlled lab environment employing realistic boundary and thermal conditions. The effects of simultaneous tilting of the solar collectors about both transverse and longitudinal axes, truncation of the reflector walls and inlet water (collector heat removal fluid) temperature on the natural convective heat flow characteristics inside the CPC cavity have been determined. It is concluded that the correlations developed for prediction of natural convection characteristics in rectangular, annuli and V-trough enclosures are not appropriate for application to CPC solar collectors with divergence ranging from 150% to 300%. Based on the experimental data a correlation is presented to predict the natural convection heat loss from the absorber plate of solar collectors for a range of water inlet temperatures.  相似文献

An experimental flat plate solar collector operating in conjunction with a closed-end oscillating heat pipe (CEOHP) offers a reasonably efficient and cost effective alternative to conventional solar collector system that use heat pipes. The CEOHP system described in this study relies on the natural forces of gravity and capillary action and dose not require an external power source. The flat plate collector consisted of a 1 mm thick sheet of black zinc covered by a glass enclosure with a collecting area of 2.00 × 0.97 m2 , an evaporator located on the collecting plate, and a condenser inserted into a water tank. A length of 0.003 ID copper tubing was bent into multiple turns at critical points along its path and used to channel the working fluid throughout the system. R134a was used as the working fluid. Efficiency evaluations were conducted during daylight hours over a two month period and included extensive monitoring and recording of temperatures with type-K thermocouples placed at key locations throughout the system. The results confirmed the anticipated fluctuation in collector efficiency dependant on the time of day, solar energy irradiation, ambient temperature and flat plate mean temperature. An efficiency of approximately 62% was achieved, which correlates with the efficiency of the more expensive heat pipe system. The CEOHP system offers the additional benefits of corrosion free operation and absence of freezing during winter months.  相似文献

This paper describes the performance of a circular glass tube solar collector with a set of closed-loop oscillating heat-pipes with check valves (CLOHP/CV). The assembly was divided into three sections, i.e. circular glass tube, adiabatic gap and condenser water tank. A circular 10-set glass tube solar collector of 0.058 m diameter and 1.50 m length was housed on a collecting plate. The inside circular glass tube consisted of a CLOHP/CV and collecting plate. The adiabatic gap was 0.05 m. The condenser water tank was made from a 0.03 × 0.05 m2 zinc sheet. The CLOHP/CV consisted of the collecting plate cover with inner diameter of 0.003 m and 26.40 m total length per set, and it contained two check valves with evaporator 1.50 m long, adiabatic gap 0.05 m and condenser 0.30 m long. R-134a was used as the working fluid with filling ratio of 50%. The CLOHP/CV arrangement was aligned at an inclination angle of 18 degrees from the horizontal plane, with 6 turns per set. A 0.001 m thick aluminum sheet was used to make a collecting plate with 0.10 × 1.50 m2 test area. Efficiency evaluations were conducted during daylight hours over a 2-month period and included extensive monitoring and recording of temperatures with type-K thermocouples placed at key locations throughout the system. The results confirmed the anticipated fluctuation in collector efficiency dependent on the time of day, solar energy irradiation, ambient temperature and circular tube surface mean temperature. An efficiency of approximately 76% was achieved, which correlates with the efficiency of the more expensive heat-pipe system. The CLOHP/CV system offers the additional benefits of corrosion-free operation and absence of freezing during winter months.  相似文献

In this study, the thermo-economic optimization analysis to determinate economically optimal dimensions of collector area and storage volume in domestic solar heating systems with seasonal storage is presented. For this purpose, a formulation based on the simplified P1 and P2 method is developed and solved by using MATLAB optimization Toolbox for five climatically different locations of Turkey. The results showed that the required optimum collector area in Adana (37 °N) for reaching maximum savings is 36 m2/house and 65 m2/house in Erzurum (39 °N) for same storage volume (1000 m3). The effects of collector efficiency on solar fraction and savings are investigated. The simulation results showed that the solar fraction and savings of the selective flat plate collector systems are higher than the other black paint flat plate collector systems.  相似文献

This study experimentally investigates performance analysis of a new flat-plate solar air heater (SAH) with several obstacles (Type I, Type II, Type III) and without obstacles (Type IV). Experiments were performed for two air mass flow rates of 0.0074 and 0.0052 kg/s. The first and second laws of efficiencies were determined for SAHs and comparisons were made among them. The values of first law efficiency varied between 20% and 82%. The values of second law efficiency changed from 8.32% to 44.00%. The highest efficiency were determined for the SAH with Type II absorbent plate in flow channel duct for all operating conditions, whereas the lowest values were obtained for the SAH without obstacles (Type IV). The results showed that the efficiency of the solar air collectors depends significantly on the solar radiation, surface geometry of the collectors and extension of the air flow line. The largest irreversibility was occurring at the SAH without obstacles (Type IV) collector in which collector efficiency is smallest. At the end of this study, the energy and exergy relationships are delivered for different SAHs.  相似文献

A pilot experimental solar chimney power setup consisted of an air collector 10 m in diameter and an 8 m tall chimney has been built. The temperature distribution in the solar chimney power setup was measured. Temperature difference between the collector outlet and the ambient usually can reach 24.1 °C, which generates the driving force of airflow in the setup. This is the greenhouse effect produced in the solar collector. It is found that air temperature inversion appears in the latter chimney after sunrise both on a cool day and on a warm day. Air temperature inversion is formed by the increase of solar radiation from the minimum and clears up some time later when the absorber bed is heated to an enough high temperature to make airflow break through the temperature inversion layer and flow through the chimney outlet.  相似文献

Simultaneously generating both electricity and low grade heat, photovoltaic thermal (PVT) systems maximise the solar energy extracted per unit of collector area and have the added benefit of increasing the photovoltaic (PV) electrical output by reducing the PV operating temperature. A graphical representation of the temperature rise and rate of heat output as a function of the number of transfer units NTUs illustrates the influence of fundamental parameter values on the thermal performance of the PVT collector. With the aim of maximising the electrical and thermal energy outputs, a whole of system approach was used to design an experimental, unglazed, single pass, open loop PVT air system in Sydney. The PVT collector is oriented towards the north with a tilt angle of 34°, and used six 110 Wp frameless PV modules. A unique result was achieved whereby the additional electrical PV output was in excess of the fan energy requirement for air mass flow rates in the range of 0.03–0.05 kg/s m2. This was made possible through energy efficient hydraulic design using large ducts to minimise the pressure loss and selection of a fan that produces high air mass flow rates (0.02–0.1 kg/s m2) at a low input power (4–85 W). The experimental PVT air system demonstrated increasing thermal and electrical PV efficiencies with increasing air mass flow rate, with thermal efficiencies in the range of 28–55% and electrical PV efficiencies between 10.6% and 12.2% at midday.  相似文献

In this paper, an exergoeconomic analysis has been carried out and on the basis of this analysis it has been concluded that in terms of energy saving the glazed hybrid photovoltaic thermal (PVT) module air collector offers a greater potential compared to PV module. The experimental validation for glazed hybrid PVT module air collector has also been performed and it has been observed that there is a good agreement between the theoretical and experimental values with correlation coefficient in range of 0.96–0.99 and root mean square percentage deviation in range of 2.38–7.46. The experiments have been carried out on clear days during the month July 2010 to June 2011. For the validation of theoretical results with experimental results, a typical day of winter month (December 08, 2010) and summer month (April 11, 2011) has been considered. An experimental uncertainty for December and April month is 11.6% and 2.1% respectively. The annual overall thermal energy and exergy gain are 1252.0 kWh and 289.5 kW h respectively. The annual net electrical energy savings by glazed hybrid PVT module air collector is 234.7 kW h.  相似文献

To improve the mechanical properties of MCFC cathode materials, pre-lithiated porous nickel plates containing 1–5 mol% of lithium were fabricated by the tape casting method, and the microstructures, mechanical properties, and performance was examined. The microstructure and pore distribution was not changed until the lithum content reached 3 mol%. The sample containing 5 mol% of lithium had patch structure on the skeleton and a smaller volume of primary pores. XRD analysis showed that lithium-containing porous nickel plates can easily form solid solutions without any undesirable byproducts after the oxidation. Both the bending strength and Young’s modulus of the porous plates increased with the increase of lithium content. The average bending strengths of the samples containing 1, 3, and 5 mol% of lithium were 1.29, 1.33, and 1.49 kgf/mm2 which were 2.9, 3.0, and 3.4 times higher than that of pure porous nickel plate. The Young’s modulus increased up to 1.35 kgf/mm in the case of the 5 mol% lithium containing sample that is 5.4 times higher than that of pure porous nickel plate. The OCV of single cells using pre-lithiated cathodes were between 1.065 and 1.067 V, and comparable cell performance was obtained for 500 h of single cell operation.  相似文献

A novel composite bipolar plate for a polymer electrolyte fuel cell has been prepared by a bulk-moulding compound (BMC) process. The electrical resistance of the composite material decreases from 20 000 to 5.8 mΩ as the graphite content is increased from 60 to 80 wt.%. Meanwhile, the electrical resistance of composite increases from 6.5 to 25.2 mΩ as the graphite size is decreased from 1000 to 177 μm to less than 53 μm. The thermal decomposition of 5% weight loss of composite bipolar plate is higher than 250 °C. The oxygen permeability of the composite bipolar plate is 5.82×10−8 (cm3/cm2 s) when the graphite content is 75 wt.%, and increases from 6.76×10−8 to 3.28×10−5 (cm3/cm2 s) as the graphite size is longer or smaller than 75 wt.%. The flexibility of the plate decreases with increasing graphite content. The flexural strength of the plate decreases with decrease in graphite size from 31.25 MPa (1000–177 μm) to 15.96 MPa (53 μm). The flexural modulus decreases with decrease of graphite size from 6923 MPa (1000–177 μm) to 4585 MPa (53 μm). The corrosion currents for plates containing different graphite contents and graphite sizes are all less than 10−7 A cm−2. The composite bipolar plates with different graphite contents and graphite sizes meet UL-94V-0 tests, and the limiting oxygen contents are higher than 50. Testing show that composite bipolar plates with optimum composition are very similar to that of the graphite bipolar plate.  相似文献

The performance of a compact phase change material (PCM) solar collector based on latent heat storage was investigated. In this collector, the absorber plate–container unit performs the function of both absorbing the solar energy and storing PCM. The solar energy was stored in paraffin wax, which was used as a PCM, and was discharged to cold water flowing in pipes located inside the wax. The collector's effective area was assumed to be 1 m2 and its total volume was divided into 5 sectors. The experimental apparatus was designed to simulate one of the collector's sectors, with an apparatus-absorber effective area of 0.2 m2. Outdoor experiments were carried out to demonstrate the applicability of using a compact solar collector for water heating. The time-wise temperatures of the PCM were recorded during the processes of charging and discharging. The solar intensity was recorded during the charging process. Experiments were conducted for different water flow rates of 8.3–21.7 kg/h. The effect of the water flow rate on the useful heat gain (Qu) was studied. The heat transfer coefficients were calculated for the charging process. The propagation of the melting and freezing front was also studied during the charging and discharging processes. The experimental results showed that in the charging process, the average heat transfer coefficient increases sharply with increasing the molten layer thickness, as the natural convection grows strong. In the discharge process, the useful heat gain was found to increase as the water mass flow rate increases.  相似文献

A design of experiments (DOE) matrix of CFD simulations is used to create a mathematical model able to calculate the heat transfer coefficient for nine circular confined air jets vertically impinging on a flat plate. Typical air jets dimensions and process parameter values used in glass tempering are evaluated. The flat plate temperature is set to the constant value of 640 °C. Two different values of jet diameter (4 mm, 8 mm), of air velocity at nozzle exit (110 m/s, 140 m/s), of jet-to-jet spacing (40 mm, 60 mm), of jet-to-plate distance (40 mm, 60 mm) and of nozzle height (20 mm, 60 mm) are considered. Implemented into a Visual Basic application, the mathematical model found allow the instant evaluation of heat transfer parameters and to optimize air jets parameter configuration.  相似文献

This study aims at developing lightweight and high performance composite bipolar plates for use in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The thin polymer composite bipolar plates (the thickness <1.5 mm) containing of vinyl ester resin, graphite powder, organoclay have been fabricated by bulk molding compound (BMC) process. Organoclay was prepared by ionic exchange of montmorillonite (MMT) with three different molecular weight (Mw) of poly(oxypropylene)-backboned diamine intercalating agents. Results indicate that the basal spacing and content of MMT varied with Mw of POP-diamines are critical in determining the resultant mechanical properties for bipolar plates. Flexural strength of MMT composite plates was increased from 30.21 to 45.66 MPa by adding 2 phr of MMT. The flexural strength of the plate was also ca. 38% higher than the pristine graphite plate as the basal spacing of MMT was increased from 1.71 to 5.43 nm. Meanwhile, the unnotched impact strength of the composite plates was increased from 58.11 to 80.21 J m−1. The unnotched impact strength of the plate was ca. 30% higher than that of the original graphite plates as the basal spacing of MMT was increased from 1.71 to 5.43 nm. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) and the UL-94 test revealed that the bipolar plate possesses excellent flame retardant with LOI >50 and UL-94-V0. The thermal decomposition temperature of each MMT composite plate is also higher than 250 °C. In addition, the bulk electrical conductivity of the bipolar plate with different MMT contents and basal spacing of MMT is higher than 100 S cm−1. The corrosion current is less than 10−7 A cm−2. Results confirm that the addition of MMT leads to a significant improvement on the performance of the composite bipolar plate.  相似文献

To assess the thermal performance in the climate conditions of western and central Iraq, the advantages of using a solar air collector with various turbulator absorber plates are experimentally explored. Four distinct kinds of absorber plates are provided flat plate (F), triangular (T), rectangular (R), and circular (C) turbulators at different air mass flow rates. The collector's economic properties and overall thermal performance are compared to the conventional flat plate turbulator heating systems. The main findings suggest that delta turbulators improve collector economics and overall thermal performance by generating vortex and dampening the formation of the thermal boundary layer in the direction of airflow. Furthermore, when the mass flow rate increases, the thermal performance improves, and the efficiency increases for all mass flow rates, resulting in good thermal performance for the rectangular plate collector when compared to other collectors. When compared to other types of configurations, the daily average efficiency of solar air collectors for flat plate (F), triangular (T), rectangular (R), and circular (C) turbulators are 28%, 67%, 39%, and 48%, respectively, at 50° tilt angle while at 90° tilt angle they are 44%, 76%, 54%, and 63%, respectively, as = 0.0377 kg/s. The maximum daily average efficiency fitted with rectangular turbulators have about 86% at the largest = 0.1 kg/s. This study will also give a unique direction to the work trend in the western and central parts of Iraq throughout the winter months.  相似文献
