A benefit of wetland preservation and restoration is the ecosystem service of improving water quality, typically assessed based on bacterial loading. The Ballona Wetlands, a degraded salt marsh of approximately 100 ac located on the southern border of Marina Del Rey (Los Angeles County, California, USA) are currently the focus of publicly funded restoration planning. The wetlands receive tidal water, usually contaminated with fecal indicator bacteria (FIB: total and fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli, enterococci) from the adjacent Ballona Creek and Estuary. During the summer of 2007, two 24-h studies were conducted to determine FIB tidal dynamics within the wetland. Measurements of water flow and mean FIB concentrations (n = 3) were measured every 1.5 h to determine total FIB load estimates. FIB loading rates (MPN/s) were greatest during flood tides as water entered the wetlands, and then again during spring tide conditions when sediments were resuspended during swifter spring ebb flows. During daylight hours, the wetland acted as a sink for these bacteria as loads diminished, presumably by sunlight and other processes. Conversely, during late afternoon and night, the wetlands shifted to being a source as excess FIB departed on ebb flows. Therefore, the wetlands act as both a source and sink for FIB depending on tidal conditions and exposure to sunlight. Future restoration actions would result in a tradeoff - increased tidal channels offer a greater surface area for FIB inactivation, but also would result in a greater volume of FIB-contaminated resuspended sediments carried out of the wetlands on stronger ebb flows. As levels of FIB in Ballona Creek and Estuary diminish through recently established regulatory actions, the wetlands could shift into a greater sink for FIB.  相似文献

Recreational water quality is assessed by using water quality objectives for fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) including total coliform, fecal coliform (or E. coli), and/or Enterococcus. It is required under the Clean Water Act that a TMDL be developed for a bacteria-impaired water body. The development and implementation of bacterial TMDLs has proven challenging and often difficult due to unknown source(s) of FIB. This study found that FIB levels varied significantly in flowing water, ponded water, and associated sediment. FIB levels in isolated ponded water in waterways were significantly higher than in flowing water. Sediment under ponded water contained a great amount of FIB. Furthermore, FIB concentrations in ponded water tended to increase with increasing water temperature and to decrease with increasing water salinity. The result provides the field evidence of survival/growth of FIB in water and sediment under ambient conditions in southern California. A holistic approach including natural sources (e.g., a reference system) should be considered for practical and applicable purposes while developing and implementing bacterial TMDLs for pathogen-impaired waterbodies.  相似文献

Developing the capability to predict pathogens in surface water is important for reducing the risk that such organisms pose to human health. In this study, three primary data source scenarios (measured stream flow and water quality, modelled stream flow and water quality, and host-associated Bacteroidales) are investigated within a Classification and Regression Tree Analysis (CART) framework for classifying pathogen (Escherichia coli 0157:H7, Salmonella, Campylobacter, Cryptosporidium, and Giardia) presence and absence (P/A) for a 178 km2 agricultural watershed. To provide modelled data, a Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was developed to predict stream flow, total suspended solids (TSS), total N and total P, and fecal indicator bacteria loads; however, the model was only successful for flow and total N and total P simulations, and did not accurately simulate TSS and indicator bacteria transport. Also, the SWAT model was not sensitive to an observed reduction in the cattle population within the watershed that may have resulted in significant reduction in E. coli concentrations and Salmonella detections. Results show that when combined with air temperature and precipitation, SWAT modelled stream flow and total P concentrations were useful for classifying pathogen P/A using CART methodology. From a suite of host-associated Bacteroidales markers used as independent variables in CART analysis, the ruminant marker was found to be the best initial classifier of pathogen P/A. Of the measured sources of independent variables, air temperature, precipitation, stream flow, and total P were found to be the most important variables for classifying pathogen P/A. Results indicate a close relationship between cattle pollution and pathogen occurrence in this watershed, and an especially strong link between the cattle population and Salmonella detections.  相似文献

This article presents a multidisciplinary research devoted to correlate estimation of the rock mass characteristics with parameters and features obtained by the use of digital photography. The data obtained from remote slope analysis are then undertaken to a statistical analysis of discrete data samples comparing different survey areas in terms of shape and dimension of the sampling window. The method is developed by an application to the North rock face of the Aiguilles Marbrées (Mont Blanc). This slope was chosen as case of study since it represents an important high mountain location from the environmental and touristic point of view, where the severe working condition led to the application of innovative methodology. This site is monitored by a local authority (Fondazione Montagna Sicura) devoted to the territory safe control since a rock fall of considerable size occurred in September 2007. After a photogrammetric survey, an orthophotograph has been created; circular windows have been materialized on the orthophotograph to perform area sampling. Statistical analysis of the obtained data enables us to calculate parameters and estimators for rock mass classification.  相似文献

To date, exposure studies linking dust‐mite allergens with asthma and allergic morbidities have typically relied on sampling from representative locations in the home for exposure assessment. We determine the effects of differing microenvironments allergen exposures on asthma and asthma severity among 25 case and 31 control preschool children in Singapore. Blo t 5 allergen levels in various niches from the children's home and day‐care microenvironments as well as their Blo t 5 time‐weighted concentrations were determined. Eosinophilic cationic protein (ECP) levels from the children's saliva as markers for airway inflammation were obtained. Salivary ECP levels were higher in children with asthma than those without and the strength of association increased with higher salivary ECP levels. Although there was no relationship between time‐weighted Blo t 5 concentrations with salivary ECP levels among the controls, a positive statistically significant relationship was noted among cases, demonstrating the effects of cumulative exposure on asthma severity. Avoidance measures to reduce Blo t 5 allergen exposure should include all microenvironments that asthmatic children are exposed throughout the day.  相似文献
