Let be a finite group, let be a -lattice, and let be a field of characteristic zero containing primitive roots of 1. Let be the quotient field of the group algebra of the abelian group . It is well known that if is quasi-permutation and -faithful, then is stably equivalent to . Let be the center of the division ring of generic matrices over . Let be the symmetric group on symbols. Let be a prime. We show that there exist a split group extension of by a -elementary group, a -faithful quasi-permutation -lattice , and a one-cocycle in such that is stably isomorphic to . This represents a reduction of the problem since we have a quasi-permutation action; however, the twist introduces a new level of complexity. The second result, which is a consequence of the first, is that, if is algebraically closed, there is a group extension of by an abelian -group such that is stably equivalent to the invariants of the Noether setting .

If is a Lie algebra over and its centre, the natural inclusion extends to a representation of the exterior algebra of in the cohomology of . We begin a study of this representation by examining its Poincaré duality properties, its associated higher cohomology operations and its relevance to the toral rank conjecture. In particular, by using harmonic forms we show that the higher operations presented by Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson (1998) form a subalgebra of , and that they can be assembled to yield an explicit Hirsch-Brown model for the Borel construction associated to .

This paper studies the equivariant cobordism classification of all involutions fixing a disjoint union of an odd-dimensional real projective space with its normal bundle nonbounding and a Dold manifold with a positive even and 0$">. The complete analysis of the equivariant cobordism classes of such involutions is given except that the upper and lower bounds on the codimension of may not be best possible. In particular, we find that there exist such involutions with nonstandard normal bundle to . Together with the results of part I of this title (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 354 (2002), 4539-4570), the argument for involutions fixing is finished.

On orbital partitions and exceptionality of primitive permutation groups   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Let and be transitive permutation groups on a set such that is a normal subgroup of . The overgroup induces a natural action on the set of non-trivial orbitals of on . In the study of Galois groups of exceptional covers of curves, one is led to characterizing the triples where fixes no elements of ; such triples are called exceptional. In the study of homogeneous factorizations of complete graphs, one is led to characterizing quadruples where is a partition of such that is transitive on ; such a quadruple is called a TOD (transitive orbital decomposition). It follows easily that the triple in a TOD is exceptional; conversely if an exceptional triple is such that is cyclic of prime-power order, then there exists a partition of such that is a TOD. This paper characterizes TODs such that is primitive and is cyclic of prime-power order. An application is given to the classification of self-complementary vertex-transitive graphs.

We present a new proof for the existence of a simple closed geodesic on a convex surface . This result is due originally to Poincaré. The proof uses the -dimensional Riemannian manifold of piecewise geodesic closed curves on with a fixed number of corners, chosen sufficiently large. In we consider a submanifold formed by those elements of which are simple regular and divide into two parts of equal total curvature . The main burden of the proof is to show that the energy integral , restricted to , assumes its infimum. At the end we give some indications of how our methods yield a new proof also for the existence of three simple closed geodesics on .

For every homogeneous ideal in a polynomial ring and for every we consider the Koszul homology with respect to a sequence of of generic linear forms. The Koszul-Betti number is, by definition, the dimension of the degree part of . In characteristic , we show that the Koszul-Betti numbers of any ideal are bounded above by those of the gin-revlex of and also by those of the Lex-segment of . We show that iff is componentwise linear and that and iff is Gotzmann. We also investigate the set of all the gin of and show that the Koszul-Betti numbers of any ideal in are bounded below by those of the gin-revlex of . On the other hand, we present examples showing that in general there is no is such that the Koszul-Betti numbers of any ideal in are bounded above by those of .

Let be a holomorphic self-map of the unit disc . For every , there is a measure on (sometimes called Aleksandrov measure) defined by the Poisson representation . Its singular part measures in a natural way the ``affinity' of for the boundary value . The affinity for values inside is provided by the Nevanlinna counting function of . We introduce a natural measure-valued refinement of and establish that the measures are obtained as boundary values of the refined Nevanlinna counting function . More precisely, we prove that is the weak limit of whenever converges to non-tangentially outside a small exceptional set . We obtain a sharp estimate for the size of in the sense of capacity.

We estimate character sums with , on average, and individually. These bounds are used to derive new results about various congruences modulo a prime and obtain new information about the spacings between quadratic nonresidues modulo . In particular, we show that there exists a positive integer such that is a primitive root modulo . We also show that every nonzero congruence class can be represented as a product of 7 factorials, , where , and we find the asymptotic formula for the number of such representations. Finally, we show that products of 4 factorials with represent ``almost all' residue classes modulo p, and that products of 3 factorials with are uniformly distributed modulo .

We study the positive radial solutions of the Dirichlet problem in , 0$"> in , on , where , 1$">, is the -Laplace operator, is the unit ball in centered at the origin and is a function. We are able to get results on the spectrum of the linearized operator in a suitable weighted space of radial functions and derive from this information on the Morse index. In particular, we show that positive radial solutions of Mountain Pass type have Morse index 1 in the subspace of radial functions of . We use this to prove uniqueness and nondegeneracy of positive radial solutions when is of the type and .

A submanifold is said to be complex-tangential if lies in the maximal complex subspace of for each . We show that for real-analytic submanifolds , if is complex-tangential, then every compact subset of is a peak-interpolation set for .

We study the cohomology of a locally finite, connected, cocommutative Hopf algebra over . Specifically, we are interested in those algebras for which is generated as an algebra by and . We shall call such algebras semi-Koszul. Given a central extension of Hopf algebras with monogenic and semi-Koszul, we use the Cartan-Eilenberg spectral sequence and algebraic Steenrod operations to determine conditions for to be semi-Koszul. Special attention is given to the case in which is the restricted universal enveloping algebra of the Lie algebra obtained from the mod- lower central series of a -group. We show that the algebras arising in this way from extensions by of an abelian -group are semi-Koszul. Explicit calculations are carried out for algebras arising from rank 2 -groups, and it is shown that these are all semi-Koszul for .

We introduce a numerical isomorphism invariant for any triangulation of . Although its definition is purely topological (inspired by the bridge number of knots), reflects the geometric properties of . Specifically, if is polytopal or shellable, then is ``small' in the sense that we obtain a linear upper bound for in the number of tetrahedra of . Conversely, if is ``small', then is ``almost' polytopal, since we show how to transform into a polytopal triangulation by local subdivisions. The minimal number of local subdivisions needed to transform into a polytopal triangulation is at least . Using our previous results [The size of triangulations supporting a given link, Geometry & Topology 5 (2001), 369-398], we obtain a general upper bound for exponential in . We prove here by explicit constructions that there is no general subexponential upper bound for in . Thus, we obtain triangulations that are ``very far' from being polytopal. Our results yield a recognition algorithm for that is conceptually simpler, although somewhat slower, than the famous Rubinstein-Thompson algorithm.

The Abhyankar-Sathaye Problem asks whether any biregular embedding can be rectified, that is, whether there exists an automorphism such that is a linear embedding. Here we study this problem for the embeddings whose image is given in by an equation , where and . Under certain additional assumptions we show that, indeed, the polynomial is a variable of the polynomial ring (i.e., a coordinate of a polynomial automorphism of ). This is an analog of a theorem due to Sathaye (1976) which concerns the case of embeddings . Besides, we generalize a theorem of Miyanishi (1984) giving, for a polynomial as above, a criterion for when .

This paper studies ordinary and general convergence of the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction.

Let the continued fraction expansion of any irrational number be denoted by and let the -th convergent of this continued fraction expansion be denoted by . Let

where . Let . It is shown that if , then the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction diverges at . is an uncountable set of measure zero. It is also shown that there is an uncountable set of points such that if , then does not converge generally.

It is further shown that does not converge generally for 1$">. However we show that does converge generally if is a primitive -th root of unity, for some . Combining this result with a theorem of I. Schur then gives that the continued fraction converges generally at all roots of unity.

In a seminal paper, Sarason generalized some classical interpolation problems for functions on the unit disc to problems concerning lifting onto of an operator that is defined on ( is an inner function) and commutes with the (compressed) shift . In particular, he showed that interpolants (i.e., such that ) having norm equal to exist, and that in certain cases such an is unique and can be expressed as a fraction with . In this paper, we study interpolants that are such fractions of functions and are bounded in norm by (assuming that , in which case they always exist). We parameterize the collection of all such pairs and show that each interpolant of this type can be determined as the unique minimum of a convex functional. Our motivation stems from the relevance of classical interpolation to circuit theory, systems theory, and signal processing, where is typically a finite Blaschke product, and where the quotient representation is a physically meaningful complexity constraint.

Given a cotorsion pair in an abelian category with enough objects and enough objects, we define two cotorsion pairs in the category of unbounded chain complexes. We see that these two cotorsion pairs are related in a nice way when is hereditary. We then show that both of these induced cotorsion pairs are complete when is the ``flat' cotorsion pair of -modules. This proves the flat cover conjecture for (possibly unbounded) chain complexes and also gives us a new ``flat' model category structure on . In the last section we use the theory of model categories to show that we can define using a flat resolution of and a cotorsion coresolution of .

A detailed stationary phase analysis is presented for noncompact parameter ranges of the family of elementary eigenfunctions on the hyperbolic plane , , the eigenvalue, and the Macdonald-Bessel function. The phase velocity of on is a double-valued vector field, the tangent field to the pencil of geodesics tangent to the horocycle . For a multi-term stationary phase expansion is presented in for uniform in parameters. An application is made to find an asymptotic relation for the Fourier coefficients of a family of automorphic eigenfunctions. In particular, for automorphic with coefficients and eigenvalue it is shown for the special range that is for large, improving by an order of magnitude for this special range upon the estimate from the general Hecke bound . An exposition of the WKB asymptotics of the Macdonald-Bessel functions is presented.
