Given the energy waste problem in contemporary households and the consequent need for optimal energy use, this article presents a novel network architecture that is generically applicable on domestic appliances, such as white goods, and audiovisual and communication equipment, and is capable of performing real-time management of their energy consumption. Deploying the latest information and communication technology, the proposed architecture enables definition of energy saving applications that perform three main functions: real-time estimation of the energy consumption of the home environment, without exploiting smart metering devices; control of domestic appliances energy use so that energy consumption of the home environment is kept within user-defined limits; and autonomous identification and management of standby devices, targeting minimal energy consumption. 相似文献

The impact of home automation on domestic lifestyles will be as far ranging as was that of factory automation on industry and its benefits will be available to all sectors of society. Home automation will be achieved not with the household robot but with embedded computing power and memory within dozens of pieces of domestic equipment, each of which will communicate with the user and with other equipments. Within the integrated home system the communication media will include infra-red, radio, mains wires, installed twisted wires and coaxial cable, and later perhaps optical fibre. Green Internet of things (IoT) has been heralded as the next big thing waiting to be realized in energy-efficient ubiquitous computing. Green IoT revolves around increased machine-to-machine communications and encompasses energy-efficient wireless embedded sensors and actuators that assist in monitoring and controlling home appliances. Energy efficiency in home applications can be achieved by better monitoring of the specific energy consumption by the appliances. There are many wireless standards that can be adopted for the design of such embedded devices in IoT. These communication technologies cater to different requirements and are classified as the short-range and long-range ones. To select the best communication method, this paper surveys various IoT communication technologies and discusses the advantages and disadvantages to develop an energy monitoring system. An IoT device based on the Wi-Fi technology system is developed and tested for usage in the home energy monitoring environment. The performance of this system is then evaluated by the measurement of power consumption metrics. In the efficient deep-sleep mode, the system saves up to 0.3 W per cycle with an average power dissipation of less than 0.1 W/s. 相似文献
