An osmiophilic substance in brain synaptic vesicles not associated with catecholamine content

Zusammenfassung Nach Fixierung durch Glutaraldehyddurchströmung und Behandlung mit OsO₄ bei 60°C während 30 min erhält man im Rattenhirn elektronendichte Niederschläge innerhalb der kleinen synaptischen Vesikel. Amin-Entleerungsversuche und autoradiographische Untersuchungen haben gezeigt, dass diese Niederschläge nicht mit dem Katecholamingehalt des Gehirns zusammenhängen.     

Cerebral ischemia revisited: new insights as revealed using in vitro brain slice preparations

The elucidation of the pathophysiological mechanisms of cerebral ischemia/hypoxia dictates the use of experimental models which mimic this disabling brain condition. In vivo experimental models have been available for many decades and are responsible for the bulk of, though incomplete, knowledge we have about these mechanisms. Since study in isolation of each postulated mechanism is impossible in vivo, the need for an in vitro experimental model has intensified in recent years. Consequently, rat and guinea pig hippocampal slice preparations have emerged as the models of choice. This review attempts to highlight some of the results obtained using brain slices in the study of cerebral ischemia/hypoxia and compare them to those obtained in vivo. Both the biochemical and the physiological correlates of energy metabolism, ion homeostasis, neurotransmission and neuromodulation of this brain condition are reviewed. The agreements, and especially the disagreements, between the in vivo and in vitro findings are emphasized. Details are given of the possible roles of both lactic acid, Ca2+ and excitotoxins in the neuronal damage inflicted by cerebral ischemia/hypoxia. Recent attempts to protect brain slices against experimental cerebral ischemic/hypoxic damage are also reviewed here briefly.     

Phenethylamine content of human urine and rat brain,its alterations in pathological conditions and after drug administration

Zusammenfassung Nachweis, dass die Phenethylamin-ausscheidung bei endogener, nicht aber bei sekundär atypischer Depression signifikativ vermindert, bei Manie und Schizophrenie aber entsprechend erhöht ist. Die Behandlung der endogenen, nicht aber der sekundären Depression mit trizyklischen antidepressiven Mitteln erhöht die Phenethylaminausscheidung. Der Phenethylamingehalt im Rattengehirn wird durch Reserpin signifikant vermindert, durch Iproniazid, Imipramin und Chlorimipramin jedoch signifikant erhöht.

Changes in brain acetylcholinesterase activity of young rats after chronic treatment with tremorine

Résumé La trémorine a été administrée chez les rats quotidiennement pendant 7 jours à des doses de 7.5, 22.5 ou 30 mg/kg. Les témoins ont montré des mouvements convulsifs proportionnels à la dose de trémorine. Quatre jours après l'arrêt du traitement, l'activité acétylcholinestérasique du cortex cérébral était augmentée. Il est proposé que ce change de l'activité acétylcholinestérasique reflète une utilisation accrue de l'acétylcholine corticale.

Studies on the ascorbic acid and carotene content in leaves as a common characteristic of botanically related species

Résumé Les résultats des dosages parallèles d'acide ascorbique et de carotène dans les feuilles des espèces appartenant à 7 familles ont démontré une tendance à la stabilité de la proportion acide ascorbique/carotène chez les plantes apparentées. La stabilité de cette proportion chez les espèces d'une seule famille est plus marquée que celle de la teneur même des deux substances. Ce fait semble pouvoir confirmer l'idée d'une correlation étroite dans l'action des deux substances en question.     

Cannabivarichromene,a new cannabinoid with a propyl side chain in cannabis

Zusammenfassung Es wurde ein neuer Vertreter aus der Gruppe der psychotrop wirkenden Inhaltsstoffe im Haschisch indischer Herkunft gefunden. Es handelt sich um Cannabivarichromen, als Homologa mit einer Propyl-Seitenkette des Cannabichromens.     

Isoenzymes of some oxido-reductases in theCandida genus as a basis of species identification after electrophoresis

Zusammenfassung Nach Elektrophorese in Agargel wurden die Isoenzyme von G-6-PDH, LDH und MDH in Extrakten vonCandida albicans, C. tropicalis, C. pseudotropicalis, C. crusei undC. utilis untersucht. Es liessen sich diverse Isoenzyme von unterschiedlichem Aktivitätsgrad und wohl auch verschiedener Lage in den Isozymogrammen nachweisen, was bestimmte Schlüsse auf betreffendeCandida-Arten erlaubt.
