Spawning behaviors observed from May 1981 through August 1983 in the laboratory and field are described and compared for twelve species of northeast Pacific holothuroids collected from waters of the San Juan Archipelago, Washington. For many species, elevation of the anterior end, stretching of the introvert, tentacle waving, and swaying are behaviors commonly associated with gamete release. Less common activities include waving of introvert podia, waves of body wall contractions, errant males, aggregations, and pseudocopulation. Positively buoyant eggs of four species [Psolus chitonoides Clark, Cucumaria miniata (Brandt), C. piperata (Stimpson), and C. fallax (Ludwig)] were packaged in pellets, ropes, or strands and released passively; a female Molpadia intermedia (Ludwig) discharged negatively buoyant eggs in a single explosive burst. Two externally brooding sea cucumbers [C. lubrica (Clark) and C. pseudocurata Deichmann] produced strands of dilution-resistant sperm that were carried by currents to nearby females. Three species commonly sympatric [P. chitonoides, C. miniata, and Eupentacta quinquesemita (Selenka)] in high-current rocky habitats have overlapping spring breeding seasons, but spawn at different hours of the day. Please address all requests for reprints to Dr. McEuen at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution  相似文献

The giant clam Tridacna crocea harbors in the mantle tissue symbiotic microalgae commonly called zooxanthellae. Isolated zooxanthellae release glycerol into the medium in the presence of mantle tissue homogenate (MH), but it is not clear whether the cells do so in situ. In order to determine the photosynthetic products released by zooxanthellae in the mantle of the giant clam we traced photosynthetic fixation products from 13C- and 14C-bicarbonate both in the clam and in isolated zooxanthellae (IZ) in the presence or absence of MH. After 15 min incubation in the absence of MH the IZ released less than 0.6% of the fixed labeled carbon, mainly as glucose. The major intracellular photosynthates were neutral lipids, which constituted 20 to 40% of the total extractable 14C. In the presence of MH, the IZ released up to 5.6% of the total fixed 14C, mostly as glycerol, and the major intracellular photosynthate was glucose. In an intact clam incubated in sea water containing 14C-bicarbonate, 46 to 80% of the fixed 14C was translocated from the zooxanthellae to the host tissues. Most of the 14C in the hemolymph, in the isolated zooxanthellae and in intact mantle tissue (containing zooxanthellae) was recovered as glucose. No 14C-glycerol was detected in the mantle after 1 to 30 min incubation, and, even after 60 min, far less 14C-glycerol was synthesized than by IZ in the presence of MH. The possibility that in clam tissue glycerol is converted to glucose was examined by tracing the labeled carbon from 14C-glycerol injected into the adductor muscle. After 5 min incubation, no labeled glucose was found in the hemolymph, but after 60 min, some 20% was found as glucose. Thin slices containing zooxanthellae, cut from the surface of the mantle, fixed inorganic carbon supplied as NaH14CO3 in the medium and mainly released 14C-glucose. The addition of MH to the surrounding medium did not affect the release rate or form of release product. When the slices were cut into smaller pieces, however, the ratio of glycerol to glucose in the release product increased. These results indicate that in the presence of MH the metabolism of isolated zooxan- thellae was different from that of zooxanthellae in the mantle. In the presence of MH, isolated zooxanthellae release mostly glycerol, whereas in the mantle they release glucose. Received: 18 February 1998 / Accepted: 4 December 1998  相似文献

Settlement sites of marine invertebrate larvae are frequently influenced by positive or negative cues, many of which are chemical in nature. Following from the observation that many shallow-water, Hawai'ian marine macroalgae are free of fouling by sessile invertebrates, we predicted that the algae are chemically protected and dependent on either surface-bound or continuously released soluble compounds to deter settling invertebrate larvae. To address the importance of waterborne algal compounds, we experimentally determined whether larvae of two of Hawai'i's dominant hard-surface fouling organisms, the polychaete tube worm Hydroides elegans and the bryozoan Bugula neritina, would settle in the presence of waters conditioned by 12 species of common Hawai'ian macroalgae (representing the Phaeophyta, Chlorophyta, Rhodophyta and Cyanophyta). The results included a full spectrum of biological responses by each larval species to waterborne algal compounds. Larval responses to conditioned water were consistent for each algal species, but the outcomes were not predictable based on the taxonomic relationships of the algae. For example, among the species of Phaeophyta examined, different conditioned waters were: (1) toxic, (2) inhibited settlement, (3) simulated settlement, or (4) had no effect, compared to larvae in control dishes containing filtered seawater. Additionally, larval responses to aged (24 h) conditioned waters could not be predicted from the results of assays run with conditioned waters utilized immediately after preparation. Finally, settlement by larvae of one species did not predict outcomes of tests for the other species. Four of 12 shallow-reef Hawai'ian macroalgae tested released compounds into surrounding waters that immediately killed or inhibited settlement by both H. elegans and B. neritina (toxic: Dictyota sandvicensis; inhibitory: Halimeda discoidea, Sphacelaria tribuloides, Ulva reticulata); the remaining 8 algal species prevented settlement by one of these fouling organisms but for the other had no effect or, in some cases, even stimulated settlement  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation can decrease local population persistence by reducing connectivity, which is a function of dispersal of individuals among habitat fragments. Dispersal is often treated as diffusion in population models, even though for many species it is a result of a series of behavioral decisions. We developed a metapopulation model to explore the potential importance of dispersal behaviors in driving metapopulation dynamics. We incorporated types of behavior that affect dispersal—colonization inhibiting, colonization enhancing, extinction inhibiting, extinction enhancing, rescue enhancing, rescue inhibiting—into Levins’ (1969) metapopulation model and projected occupancy rates for a variety of parameter values. Examples from the literature of behaviors associated with each of these parameters are provided. Our model simplifies into previously published metapopulation models that incorporate only a single behavior, and we present a density-dependent rescue function that leads to multiple non-zero equilibria. We found a variety of behavioral effects on metapopulations. Rescue enhancement fills patches faster than does colonization enhancement or extinction inhibition, and declines in patch occupancy are moderate with extinction enhancement, but colonization inhibition causes metapopulation extinction. We also found that with colonization and extinction inhibitions, equilibrium patch occupancy is inversely related to patch turnover rate. With density-dependent rescue, persistence depends not only on the strength of the strong rescue effect, but also on having a sufficient initial fraction of patches occupied; the stronger the rescue effect, the lower this fraction can be. This study suggests that dispersal behavior can have strong influences on metapopulation dynamics. It confirms the importance of understanding the relationship between landscape structure and dispersal behavior in understanding population persistence.  相似文献

The pteropod Clione limacina (Phipps, 1774) is an arcticboreal, circumpolar species, which is widely distributed in the North Atlantic and Subarctic Oceans; it also occurs in the North Pacific Ocean (in the Oyashio and neighbouring waters) and along the Atlantic coast of North America in the waters of the cold Labrador current to the Cape Hatteras region (35° N). The distribution of C. limacina larvae in the plankton of the Norwegian, Barents and White Seas, the Bear Island-Spitsbergen region of the Greenland Sea, the Newfoundland Grand Bank and the Flemish-Cap Bank region of the North-western Atlantic Ocean, and the Kurile-Kamchatka region of the North-western Pacific Ocean has been studied, and information from literature concerning the reproduction and larval occurrence of the species is summarized. Throughout its distributional are, spawning of C. limacina is characterized by the same general ecological pattern. This species breeds and spawns in all types of water masses occurring within the vertical range which it commonly inhabits — from surface layers to 500 m water depth. In all local populations of the species, the most intensive spawning is correlated with the spring/summer period of annual heating of the local waters, and the highest abundance parallels maximum growth of phytoplankton which serves as food for veligers and early polytrochous larvae. After the end of this period, spawning intensity in all local C. limacina populations declines sharply, but spawning continues at low intensity during the autumn/winter season, being practically continuous throughout the year. Distribution patterns of C. limacina larvae are determined by those of their parental forms (the parental forms spawn in the zones permanently inhabited). The earliest larval stages of C. limacina (veligers) are present predominantly in the upper 100 or 200 m water layer, i.e. in the zone of high phytoplankton abundance. Polytrochous larvae, after becoming predaceous feeders, are distributed throughout the whole water column from the surface to 500 m depth, similar to adult C. limacina. As with the adults, larvae are present (within the species' distribution area) in all types of water masses. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, in the course of the warming of the Arctic Ocean, the southern race of C. limacina (formerly a summer/autumn seasonal invader in the Norwegian Sea) has become a permanent component of the plankton fauna of the Norwegian and Barents Seas in regions influenced by the Norwegian-Northcape Current System.  相似文献

Atlantic cod stocks are subdivided into geographically and biologically discrete populations; some being locally resident, others migratory. The reasons for the variation in migration pattern and the consequences it may have for population structuring is poorly understood. We studied a group of cod from the coastal waters of the Shetland Isles in the northern North Sea. During the spawning season, electronic tags that record depth and temperature over time were implanted into 133 individuals and the fish released within a few kilometres of where they were captured. Thirty-nine cod have been recaptured up to 608 days later, throughout the year and, in all but two cases, within 15 km of their release site. Geolocation methods based on temperature and bathymetry also suggested that the cod had a limited home range, remaining resident year-round in coastal waters. The cod were deeper during the winter and moved to shallower water in late spring and summer. They showed diel, fortnightly and monthly cycles in depth movement that varied much within and between individuals over the season. Residency and the individual variability in vertical movement may reflect a combination of locally complex depth strata, variable seabed substrate and the wide range of seasonally available prey resources.  相似文献

The current model for larval release in subtidal crustaceans suggests that hatching time is controlled by the embryos, which release a pheromone that stimulates the parent female to undergo behaviors that synchronize larval release. Alternatively, hatching could be controlled by the females. Ovigerous spiny lobsters Panulirus argus (Latreille) exhibit stereotypic behaviors during larval release, including rapid abdominal extensions and pleopod-pumping activity. Ovigerous P. argus were collected from coral reefs in the Florida Keys, USA during the summers of 2005 and 2006. Pleopod-pumping activity was quantified to determine if a female’s pumping activity correlates with the developmental state of the embryos. The role of pheromones released by developing and hatching embryos in controlling pumping behaviors was tested by measuring the pumping response of ovigerous lobsters to (1) hatch water, (2) homogenized embryo water, (3) embryo-conditioned water (unhatched late-stage embryos soaked for 20 h), and (4) water containing homogenized post-hatch embryo cases. Bioassays were conducted under constant conditions (dim-red light) in the laboratory at random times during the day to control for any possible rhythm in pumping activity. Spontaneous pleopod-pumping activity increased significantly with increasing embryo development. Upon exposure to hatch water, ovigerous lobsters with late-stage embryos displayed increased pleopod pumping with increased treatment concentration. Water individually conditioned with homogenized late-stage embryos, intact late-stage embryos, and homogenized post-hatch embryo cases all induced larval release behaviors in females with late-stage embryos. Ovigerous females with early-stage embryos did not respond to water conditioned with homogenized early- or late-stage embryos. These results suggest that active substances are released by embryos at the time of hatching and induce the stereotypical pumping behaviors of the female that synchronizes larval release. The results support the model that larval release in subtidal crustaceans is controlled by pheromones released from hatching embryos.  相似文献

Two types of northern Adriatic mucous macroaggregates—surface and cloud-like—collected in June 2000 at the sea surface and at the depth of the pycnocline, respectively, were studied by light and cryo-scanning electron microscopy. The combination of both techniques permitted investigation of species/particle composition and particle–organic matrix associations of copious mucous aggregates. Both types of macroaggregates had, on average, heterogeneous composition with diatoms the dominant biotic component, differing by the prevailing species and stage of degradation. Some differences in the organization of the basic fibrillar organic network of macroaggregates were observed. Clouds were characterized by a tighter organization of the polysaccharidic fibrils within the walls of the organic network constituting the cloud. This organization was looser in the organic network within surface aggregates. Plankton remains and inorganic particles could lead to lower porosity and greater rigidity of these aggregates. The more complex organization of the organic matter and the intense growth of Cylindrotheca closterium within the clouds probably reflect a longer physical diagenesis of the polysaccharidic fibrils in comparison to surface aggregates.Communicated by O. The release of photoassimilated carbon as dissolved organic matter was studied in situ in oligotrophic and eutrophic marine waters and in axenic laboratory cultures. Percentage extracellular release (PER), integrated for the trophogenic zone, ranged from 6 to 12% in eutrophic waters and from 17 to 27% in oligotrophic seas. Most of the algal cultures released low amounts of dissolved organic matter (5%) during exponential growth. The highest levels of PER were observed in surface and deep samples, possibly as a result of elevated photorespiration and senescent cells. The generally lower values for extracellular release reported in this work as compared to other studies may be partly due to improved experimental techniques which minimized previously encountered artifacts.  相似文献

In many songbird species, males sing a repertoire of distinct song types. Song sparrows typically are described as having repertoires of about a dozen song types, but these song types are themselves quite variable and some songs are produced that appear intermediate between two types. In this study we quantify the similarity between successive songs produced by song sparrows in order to determine if differences between song types are emphasized or deemphasized in bouts of continuous singing. In spite of the high degree of variation within song types and similarity between song types observed in this species, we show that transitions from one song type to the next are distinct as compared to transitions within sequences of the same type (Figs. 4 and 5). Variation does not accumulate across sequences of the same song type, and the average variation observed within a continuous sequence of the same song type is significantly less than is predicted from the total variation recorded for that type across many different bouts (Fig. 6). These results support the view that song sparrows include two levels of variation in their singing: differences between song types as is commonly observed in species with song repertoires, and an independent level of variation observed for songs of the same type.  相似文献

The diurnal vertical migration of Cochlodinium polykrikoides (C. polykrikoides), which caused a red tide in the Korean coastal waters of the East Sea/Sea of Japan in September 2003, was examined by determining the time-dependent changes in the density of living cells in relation to the depth of the water column. The ascent of this species into the surface layer (depth of water 2 m) occurred during 1400-1500. The descent started at 1600 and a high distribution rate (86%) at 15-20 m was observed at 0300. During the ascent, the cells were widely distributed at each depth level from 0600 hr and at 0800-1100, the cells were primarily distributed in the middle layer (0-6 m). The concentration of dissolved inorganic nitrogen was generally < or = 2.86 micromol l(-1), but at 1400-1500, the concentration in the surface layer reduced to < or = 0.14 micromol l(-1). Moreover, the concentration gradually increased as the depth increased to > or = 5 m. These results showed that the nutrient-consumption rate associated with the proliferation of C. polykrikoides during a red tide is more influenced by the inorganic-nitrogen resources ratherthan the inorganic-phosphorus compounds.  相似文献

The red grouper (Epinephelus morio) has historically been one of the most important fisheries of the Campeche Bank area in the Gulf of México, where two fleets from México and one from Cuba participate. Current stocks have been estimated to be a third or less as abundant as in the 1970s; hence, the fishery has been declared to be over-exploited. The federal government of México has expressed the need to investigate the potential use of protected areas as a management tool for recovery of this species. Based on artificial neural network (ANN) modelling, we analysed the spatial distribution of red grouper with respect substrate, considering the demographic structure of the stock. We found a significant relationship between the type of substrate and the three stages of development (juveniles, pre-adults and adults). Juveniles are distributed in shallow waters close to the coast on coral substrates; pre-adults are also associated with coral substrates, but at an intermediate depth; adults are found in deeper waters on sandy substrates. We also identified seasonal reproductive aggregation patterns, always in relation to substrate types. Reproductive aggregation during the winter and early spring in the north-eastern continental shelf and the almost permanent (exception in autumn) concentration of juveniles in coastal waters around the central and eastern coast of Yucatan are of particular importance for management. These patterns represent seasons and areas of high fish vulnerability, which is the basic criterion for further analysis of protected areas.  相似文献

Four species ofPhotololigo were identified using allozymes from the northern waters of Australia between the North West Shelf (114°00E) and Brisbane (153°00E). Two of these species fitted the gross morphology ofP. edulis documented from Japan and two taxa shared the distinguishing features ofP. chinensis. F-statistic analyses revealed no major population genetic structuring in any of the species over the geographical range sampled and all populations were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Given that the distributions of the species appear to be correlated with depth, at least during the austral summer, this panmixia is considered to reflect extensive gene flow through longshore movement of these squid. It is suggested that depth constraints, or factors associated with depth, act as effective barriers to gene flow and, therefore, provide mechanisms for allopatric speciation in this genus. The data from northern Australia indicate that the current view thatLoligo species have broad distributions may need revision and that a number of widespread taxa (such asP. edulis andP. chinensis) are likely to comprise a series of hitherto unrecognised allopatric sibling species. Heterozygosity levels were low for all species exceptPhotololigo sp. 1, which had a restricted deep-water distribution. These data are concordant with the habitat specialist-generalist model, which is discussed.Contribution No. 654 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献

With the computer program VORTEX I ran a series of simulations of the Bearded Vulture ( Gypaetus barbatus ) population held in captivity in European zoos and of the population released in the Alps. The simulations showed that the risk of extinction of the captive population with the extraction rates currently in use is low. It seems possible to maintain the current release rate of two fledglings per year at each of the four release sites in the Alps, but it does not seem possible to increase the release rate by expanding the project to other European mountains without dangerously depleting the captive population. The models showed that the most effective way to increase the release rate without increasing the captive population size is by improving hatching success in captivity. The information on the demographic parameters of the Bearded Vulture population released in the Alps was not good enough to predict the ultimate fate of the present population or to allow for recommendations on how long the population should continue to be supplemented. Although it will be necessary to wait some years to see if Bearded Vultures are able to breed in the wild in the Alps and to estimate fecundity rates, it should be possible to improve the monitoring of the individuals released to obtain more-precise survival estimates. The models of the captive and released population also showed that it should at least be possible to have an artificially supplemented Bearded Vulture population in the Alps, but because this is not the goal of the present reintroduction project, the organizations involved should decide whether this is a politically or economically desirable goal.  相似文献

We used a combination of satellite telemetry, archival and conventional tags to show that white sharks made broad-scale movements consistent with mixing of the population across their entire Australasian range. The capture of one of these sharks in New Zealand, some 3,550 km from the point of tagging in South Australia, provides further confirmation that white sharks sometimes move into open ocean waters and cross deep ocean basins. However, most movements were confined to shelf waters, generally in areas of less than 100 m depth and in some cases into waters of less than 5 m depth. Sharks showed considerable plasticity in swimming patterns, which included many of the behaviours reported for other species. One of the archival-tagged sharks showed separate periods of distinct swimming behaviour as it moved into different habitats and travelled between them. The changes in swimming behaviour were abrupt and suggested rapid switching of hunting strategies for different prey types in these habitats. All tracked sharks showed both prolonged periods of directional swimming in coastal waters at swimming speeds of 2–3 km h−1 as well as temporary residency in particular regions. Movements of tagged white sharks, together with data from shark control programs and bycatch records, suggest a seasonal movement northward along the east coast of Australia during the autumn–winter months and south in spring–early summer. The consistency of paths taken by white sharks in Australian waters suggests that they may follow common routes or “highways” in some areas. If so, identifying such areas may assist in reducing interactions with fishing operations and thus reduce bycatch.  相似文献

Ecological models taking into consideration a single or a few parameters rather than the distributional pattern of biotopes will probably prove to be over-simplified. In the oceans, large-scale biotopic patterns are remarkably regular, and this allows the concept of homology used in morphology to be applied also to biotopes. Isothermal deep uniform waters are homologous throughout all water structures, as are partly upper isothermal layers. The “permanent thermocline” in the tropics has no homologues in subpolar water-structures, where the intermediate layer is divided into cold and warm layers. Consequently, in tropical communities, some macroplankters. undertake extensive diel vertical migrations through the “permanent thermocline” and can benefit from the McLaren effect. Few such migrators exist in subpolar waters. The lower limit of phytoplankton is the second or third stability maximum and, therefore, the biotopes of phytocenes are not strictly homologous with each other. The areal distribution of biotopes can be described using the model of a deformation field; here, the two major types of biotopes are those of large-scale gyres and neutral cols. Regarding species with discontinuous ranges, one has to discover whether or not their isolated populations live in homologous parts of the deformation field. Bottom communities live in homologous biotopes if homologous water masses contact the bottom. More strict homology exists between similar “trophic zones” (in the sense used by Sokolova, 1966) within each water mass. Nekton and migratory benthos (such as tuna, Kamtchatka king-crab or several flatfish species) live only in biotopic complexes possessing varying trophic and/or thermal conditions. In the uniformly homogeneous deep waters there is neither nekton nor migratory benthos.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine whether diatom clones isolated from waters (Corio Bay or Hobson's Bay, Australia) chronically contaminated with heavy metals were more metal-resistant than clones of the same species isolated from cleaner waters (Bass Strait). Four species (2 clones per species) and 3 metals (Cu, Zn, Cd) were examined. The growth response of each clone to metal additions was assessed in both Corio Bay water and Bass Strait water. Generally, Cu was readily chelated and the most toxic metal and Cd the least chelated and least toxic. Toxicity of Cu to growth was found to be directly related to cellular Cu levels, which in turn were mediated by dissolved organic compounds in seawater. Corio Bay water had a greater metal-complexing capacity than Bass Strait water, and metal additions generally proved more toxic to each clone when in Bass Strait water. Ultraviolet irradiation eliminated differences between the water types. Relative to Bass Strait clones, no trend of enhanced metal tolerance was noted among the Corio Bay and Hobson's Bay clones; on the contrary the Corio Bay and Hobson's Bay cells were generally less to lerant of metals than were their Bass Strait counterparts, being particularly affected when in Bass Strait water. The results suggest that metal additions to waters rich in dissolved organic compounds would likely have less effect (in terms of direct toxicity and as a selective agent for metal tolerance) on resident phytoplankters than similar additions to waters low in organics.Publication No. 274 in the Ministry for Conservation, Environmental Studies Series  相似文献

Seagrass meadows are generally considered stable although few studies have specified and tested this statement. On the basis of a large monitoring dataset from Danish coastal waters, we aimed to test whether the stability of deep eelgrass populations changes along a eutrophication gradient extending from inner bays over outer bays to open coastal waters. We defined stability in terms of the stability properties of constancy, resilience, and/or persistence. Our data allowed us to investigate the stability property constancy expressed as temporal variability in eelgrass depth limits over a time scale of 10 years. We hypothesised that colonisation depths were large and relatively constant along open coasts because of low and relatively constant levels of nutrients and turbidity. Conversely, colonisation depths were hypothesised to be low and variable in protected bays due to higher and more variable levels of nutrients and turbidity. We found that depth limits increased from inner bays towards open coastal waters, matching declines in nutrient concentration and increases in water clarity and oxygen concentration. Stability expressed as constancy of depth limits did not differ significantly between habitat types, and neither did stability of physicochemical variables. However, when data from all habitat types were analysed together, they showed that eelgrass populations at the depth limit were significantly more constant and thus, in this respect, more stable when occurring in deep waters as compared to shallow waters. Areas of good water quality may thus obtain the double benefit of deeper-growing and more stable eelgrass populations. The most likely reason why this pattern did not appear at habitat-type level is that the habitat types studied represented wide spatial variation in water quality and depth limit. We conclude that the question of whether eelgrass populations are stable depends on the stability property and the ecological situation in question. Populations may be considered unstable in terms of inter-annual variation but stable in terms of long-term persistence. Therefore, the common statement that eelgrass populations are stable is not universally true.Communicated by M. Kühl, Helsingør  相似文献
