Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer deaths worldwide and account for 1.38 million deaths per year. Patients with lung cancer are often misdiagnosed as pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) leading to delay in the correct diagnosis as well as exposure to inappropriate medication. The diagnosis of TB and lung cancer can be difficult as symptoms of both diseases are similar in computed tomography (CT) images. However, treating TB leads to inflammatory fibrosis in some of the patients. There comes the need of an efficient computer aided diagnosis (CAD) of the fibrosis and carcinoma diseases. To design a fully automated CAD for characterizing fibrous and carcinoma tissues without human intervention using lung CT images. The 18 subjects in this study include seven healthy, two fibrosis and eight carcinoma, and one necrosis cases. The dataset is built by CT cuts representing healthy is 113, fibrosis is 103, necrosis is 39, and carcinoma is 185 totalling 440 images. The gray‐level spatial dependence matrix and gray level run length matrix approach are used for extracting texture‐based features. These features are given to neural network classifier and statistical classifier. These classifier performances are evaluated using receiver‐operating characteristics (ROC). The proposed method characterizes these tissues without human intervention. Sensitivity, specificity, precision, and accuracy followed by ROC curves were obtained and also studied. Thus, the proposed automated image‐based classifier could act as a precursor to histopathological analysis, thereby creating a way to class specific treatment procedures.  相似文献

Soft computing is an associate rising field that plays a crucial half in the area of engineering and science. One of the most significant applications of soft computing is image segmentation. It focuses on an exploiting tolerance of imprecision and uncertainty. Segmentation supported soft computing remains a difficult task within the medical field. Medical images are habitually used in the segmentation process to extract the meaningful portions and to know and clarify the condition of the particular patient. In this article, we implement an efficient possibilistic fuzzy C-means (PFCM) approach to segment the lung portion in the computed tomography (CT) image and the result shows that it improves the segmentation accuracy upto 98.5012% and results are compared with existing segmenting approaches like fuzzy possibilistic C-means method, fuzzy bitplane method and so forth. Also, the PFCM approach increases the diagnostic accuracy of the computer aided diagnosis system using CT images. The radiologist may utilize this computer aided diagnosis system results as a second opinion of their diagnosed results.  相似文献

Lung cancer is a critical disease with growing death rate, hence, the faster identification and treatment of lung cancer is essential. In medical image processing, the traditional methods like support vector machine, relevance vector machine for classifying cancer tissues are less sensitive to false data and required optimal improvement in classification accuracy. The proposed system of accurate lung cancer classification is obtained by a hybrid fuzzy relevance vector machine (FRVM) classifier with correlation negation ant colony optimization (CNACO) algorithm. This system provides enhanced accuracy and sensitivity by implementing two stages of feature extraction, image thresholding, and tumor segmentation, with a novel feature selection and tumor classification algorithm. The best features are selected by the proposed CNACO algorithm. The selected features are labeled and classified by FRVM classifier. The proposed classification scheme is validated on lung image database consortium and image database resource initiative public database and obtained accuracy of about 98.75%.  相似文献

Lung tumor is a complex illness caused by irregular lung cell growth. Earlier tumor detection is a key factor in effective treatment planning. When assessing the lung computed tomography, the doctor has many difficulties when determining the precise tumor boundaries. By offering the radiologist a second opinion and helping to improve the sensitivity and accuracy of tumor detection, the use of computer-aided diagnosis could be near as effective. In this research article, the proposed Lung Tumor Detection Algorithm consists of four phases: image acquisition, preprocessing, segmentation, and classification. The Advance Target Map Superpixel-based Region Segmentation Algorithm is proposed for segmentation purposes, and then the tumor region is measured using the nanoimaging theory. Using the concept of boosted deep convolutional neural network yields 97.3% precision, image recognition can be achieved. In the types of literature with the current method, which shows the study's proposed efficacy, the implementation of the proposed approach is found dramatically.  相似文献

In this article, we examine the use of several segmentation algorithms for medical image classification. This work detects the cancer region from magnetic resonance (MR) images in earlier stage. This is accomplished in three stages. In first stage, four kinds of region‐based segmentation techniques are used such as K‐means clustering algorithm, expectation–maximization algorithm, partial swarm optimization algorithm, and fuzzy c‐means algorithm. In second stage, 18 texture features are extracting using gray level co‐occurrence matrix (GLCM). In stage three, classification is based on multi‐class support vector machine (SVM) classifier. Finally, the performance analysis of SVM classifier is analyzed using the four types of segmentation algorithm for a group of 200 patients (32—Glioma, 32—Meningioma, 44—Metastasis, 8—Astrocytoma, 72—Normal). The experimental results indicate that EM is an efficient segmentation method with 100% accuracy. In SVM, quadratic and RBF (σ = 0.5) kernel methods provide the highest classification accuracy compared to all other SVM kernel methods. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Liver Segmentation is one of the challenging tasks in detecting and classifying liver tumors from Computed Tomography (CT) images. The segmentation of hepatic organ is more intricate task, owing to the fact that it possesses a sizeable quantum of vascularization. This paper proposes an algorithm for automatic seed point selection using energy feature for use in level set algorithm for segmentation of liver region in CT scans. The effectiveness of the method can be determined when used in a model to classify the liver CT images as tumorous or not. This involves segmentation of the region of interest (ROI) from the segmented liver, extraction of the shape and texture features from the segmented ROI and classification of the ROIs as tumorous or not by using a classifier based on the extracted features. In this work, the proposed seed point selection technique has been used in level set algorithm for segmentation of liver region in CT scans and the ROIs have been extracted using Fuzzy C Means clustering (FCM) which is one of the algorithms to segment the images. The dataset used in this method has been collected from various repositories and scan centers. The outcome of this proposed segmentation model has reduced the area overlap error that could offer the intended accuracy and consistency. It gives better results when compared with other existing algorithms. Fast execution in short span of time is another advantage of this method which in turns helps the radiologist to ascertain the abnormalities instantly.  相似文献

Segmentation of brain tumor images is an important task in diagnosis and treatment planning for cancer patients. To achieve this goal with standard clinical acquisition protocols, conventionally, either classification algorithms are applied on multimodal MR images or atlas‐based segmentation is used on a high‐resolution monomodal MR image. These two approaches have been commonly regarded separately. We propose to integrate all the available imaging information into one framework to be able to use the information gained from the tissue classification of the multimodal images to perform a more precise segmentation on the high‐resolution monomodal image by atlas‐based segmentation. For this, we combine a state of the art regularized classification method with an enhanced version of an atlas‐registration approach including multiscale tumor‐growth modeling. This contribution offers the possibility to simultaneously segment subcortical structures in the patient by warping the respective atlas labels, which is important for neurosurgical planning and radiotherapy planning. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Medical images are obtained with computer-aided diagnosis using electronic devices such as CT scanners and MRI machines. The captured computed tomography (CT)/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images typically have limited spatial resolution, low contrast, noise and nonuniform variability in intensity due to environmental effects. Therefore, the distinctions of the objects are blurred, distorted and the meanings of the objects are not quite precise. Fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic are best suited for addressing vagueness and ambiguity. Fuzzy clustering technique has been commonly used for segmentation of images throughout the last decade. This study presents a comparative study of 14 fuzzy-clustered image segmentation algorithms used in the CT scan and MRI brain image segments. This study used 17 data sets including 4 synthetic data sets, namely, Bensaid, Diamond, Square, and its noisy version, 5 real-world digital images, and 8 CT scan/MRI brain images to analyze the algorithms. Ground truth images are used for qualitative analysis. Apart from the qualitative analysis, the study also quantitatively evaluated the methods using three validity metrics, namely, partition coefficient, partition entropy, and Fukuyama-Sugeno. After a thorough and careful review of the results, it is observed that extension of the fuzzy C-means (EFCM) outperformed every other image segmentation algorithm, even in a noisy environment, followed by kernel-based FCM σ, the output of which is also very good after EFCM.  相似文献

Lung cancer is the main cause of cancer related death owing to its destructive nature and postponed detection at advanced stages. Early recognition of lung cancer is essential to increase the survival rate of persons and it remains a crucial problem in the healthcare sector. Computer aided diagnosis (CAD) models can be designed to effectually identify and classify the existence of lung cancer using medical images. The recently developed deep learning (DL) models find a way for accurate lung nodule classification process. Therefore, this article presents a deer hunting optimization with deep convolutional neural network for lung cancer detection and classification (DHODCNN-LCC) model. The proposed DHODCNN-LCC technique initially undergoes pre-processing in two stages namely contrast enhancement and noise removal. Besides, the features extraction process on the pre-processed images takes place using the Nadam optimizer with RefineDet model. In addition, denoising stacked autoencoder (DSAE) model is employed for lung nodule classification. Finally, the deer hunting optimization algorithm (DHOA) is utilized for optimal hyper parameter tuning of the DSAE model and thereby results in improved classification performance. The experimental validation of the DHODCNN-LCC technique was implemented against benchmark dataset and the outcomes are assessed under various aspects. The experimental outcomes reported the superior outcomes of the DHODCNN-LCC technique over the recent approaches with respect to distinct measures.  相似文献

Prevention of cervical cancer becomes essential and is carried out by the use of Pap smear images. Pap smear test analysis is laborious and tiresome work performed visually using a cytopathologist. Therefore, automated cervical cancer diagnosis using automated methods are necessary. This paper designs an optimal deep learning based Inception model for cervical cancer diagnosis (ODLIM-CCD) using pap smear images. The proposed ODLIM-CCD technique incorporates median filtering (MF) based pre-processing to discard the noise and Otsu model based segmentation process. Besides, deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) based Inception with Residual Network (ResNet) v2 model is utilized for deriving the feature vectors. Moreover, swallow swarm optimization (SSO) based hyperparameter tuning process is carried out for the optimal selection of hyperparameters. Finally, recurrent neural network (RNN) based classification process is done to determine the presence of cervical cancer or not. In order to showcase the improved diagnostic performance of the ODLIM-CCD technique, a series of simulations occur on benchmark test images and the outcomes highlighted the improved performance over the recent approaches with a superior accuracy of 0.9661.  相似文献

Classification of brain neoplasm images is one of the most challenging research areas in the field of medical image processing. The main objective of this study is to design a brain neoplasm classification system that can be trained using multiple various sized MR images of different institutions. The proposed method is a generalized classification system; it can be used in a single institute or in a number of institutions at the same time, without any restriction on image size. The generalization and unbiased capability of the proposed method can bring researchers on a single platform to work on some standard forms of computer aided diagnosis system with more efficient diagnostic capabilities. In this study, a suitable size of moveable rectangular window is used between segmentation and feature extraction stages. A semiautomatic, localized region based active contour method is used for segmentation of brain neoplasm region. Discrete wavelet transform for feature extraction, principal component analysis for feature selection and support vector machine is used as classifier. For the first time MR images of 2 sizes and from different institutions are used in training and testing of brain neoplasm classifier. Three glioma grades were classified using 92 MR images. The proposed method achieved the highest accuracy of 88.26%, the highest sensitivity of 92.23% and the maximum specificity of 93.93%. In addition, the proposed method is computationally less complex, requires shorter processing time and is more efficient in terms of storage capacity.  相似文献

Biopsy is one of the most commonly used modality to identify breast cancer in women, where tissue is removed and studied by the pathologist under the microscope to look for abnormalities in tissue. This technique can be time-consuming, error-prone, and provides variable results depending on the expertise level of the pathologist. An automated and efficient approach not only aids in the diagnosis of breast cancer but also reduces human effort. In this paper, we develop an automated approach for the diagnosis of breast cancer tumors using histopathological images. In the proposed approach, we design a residual learning-based 152-layered convolutional neural network, named as ResHist for breast cancer histopathological image classification. ResHist model learns rich and discriminative features from the histopathological images and classifies histopathological images into benign and malignant classes. In addition, to enhance the performance of the developed model, we design a data augmentation technique, which is based on stain normalization, image patches generation, and affine transformation. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated on publicly available BreaKHis dataset. The proposed ResHist model achieves an accuracy of 84.34% and an F1-score of 90.49% for the classification of histopathological images. Also, this approach achieves an accuracy of 92.52% and F1-score of 93.45% when data augmentation is employed. The proposed approach outperforms the existing methodologies in the classification of benign and malignant histopathological images. Furthermore, our experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our approach over the pre-trained networks, namely AlexNet, VGG16, VGG19, GoogleNet, Inception-v3, ResNet50, and ResNet152 for the classification of histopathological images.  相似文献

Background: In medical image analysis, the diagnosis of skin lesions remains a challenging task. Skin lesion is a common type of skin cancer that exists worldwide. Dermoscopy is one of the latest technologies used for the diagnosis of skin cancer. Challenges: Many computerized methods have been introduced in the literature to classify skin cancers. However, challenges remain such as imbalanced datasets, low contrast lesions, and the extraction of irrelevant or redundant features. Proposed Work: In this study, a new technique is proposed based on the conventional and deep learning framework. The proposed framework consists of two major tasks: lesion segmentation and classification. In the lesion segmentation task, contrast is initially improved by the fusion of two filtering techniques and then performed a color transformation to color lesion area color discrimination. Subsequently, the best channel is selected and the lesion map is computed, which is further converted into a binary form using a thresholding function. In the lesion classification task, two pre-trained CNN models were modified and trained using transfer learning. Deep features were extracted from both models and fused using canonical correlation analysis. During the fusion process, a few redundant features were also added, lowering classification accuracy. A new technique called maximum entropy score-based selection (MESbS) is proposed as a solution to this issue. The features selected through this approach are fed into a cubic support vector machine (C-SVM) for the final classification. Results: The experimental process was conducted on two datasets: ISIC 2017 and HAM10000. The ISIC 2017 dataset was used for the lesion segmentation task, whereas the HAM10000 dataset was used for the classification task. The achieved accuracy for both datasets was 95.6% and 96.7%, respectively, which was higher than the existing techniques.  相似文献

The present article proposes a novel computer‐aided diagnosis (CAD) technique for the classification of the magnetic resonance brain images. The current method adopt color converted hybrid clustering segmentation algorithm with hybrid feature selection approach based on IGSFFS (Information gain and Sequential Forward Floating Search) and Multi‐Class Support Vector Machine (MC‐SVM) classifier technique to segregate the magnetic resonance brain images into three categories namely normal, benign and malignant. The proposed hybrid evolutionary segmentation algorithm which is the combination of WFF(weighted firefly) and K‐means algorithm called WFF‐K‐means and modified cuckoo search (MCS) and K‐means algorithm called MCS‐K‐means, which can find better cluster partition in brain tumor datasets and also overcome local optima problems in K‐means clustering algorithm. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is better than other algorithms such as PSO‐K‐means, color converted K‐means, FCM and other traditional approaches. The multiple feature set comprises color, texture and shape features derived from the segmented image. These features are then fed into a MC‐SVM classifier with hybrid feature selection algorithm, trained with data labeled by experts, enabling the detection of brain images at high accuracy levels. The performance of the method is evaluated using classification accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The proposed method provides highest classification accuracy of greater than 98% with high sensitivity and specificity rates of greater than 95% for the proposed diagnostic model and this shows the promise of the approach. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fissure detection is an important task in the interpretation and diagnosis of pathologies present in lung CT images and has a lot of challenges in terms of speed and accuracy. In this paper, a new method called Fast Watersnakes to detect and segment the fissures has been proposed. Fast Watersnakes integrates the speed of Fast Watershed and the smoothness of active contours to obtain the desirable segmentation. Fast Watershed based on chain codes provides a prominent solution to the over-segmentation problem of morphological watersheds. However, there is no control of smoothness in the segmentation results. Existing methods use watershed line and contour length to incorporate smoothness, but there are no watershed lines in Fast Watersheds. The proposed method addresses Fast Watersheds as energy minimisation function. Experimental results show that the proposed method overcomes the over-segmentation problem and shows a considerable reduction in root mean square (RMS) error values when tested with lung CT images. The proposed method gives an RMS error range of 1·98±1·60 mm for fissure segmentation when compared with expert observations.  相似文献

Medical image segmentation is a preliminary stage of inclusion in identification tools. The correct segmentation of brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images is crucial for an accurate detection of the disease diagnosis. Due to in‐homogeneity, low distinction and noise the segmentation of the brain MRI images is treated as the most challenging task. In this article, we proposed hybrid segmentation, by combining the clustering methods with Hidden Markov Random Field (HMRF) technique. This aims to decrease the computational load and improves the runtime of segmentation method, as MRF methodology is used in post‐processing the images. Its evaluation has performed on real imaging data, resulting in the classification of brain tissues with dice similarity metric. These results indicate the improvement in performance of the proposed method with various noise levels, compared with existing algorithms. In implementation, selection of clustering method provides better results in the segmentation of MRI brain images.  相似文献

Liver and liver tumor segmentations are essential in computer-aided systems for diagnosing liver tumors. These systems must operate on multiphase computed tomography (CT) images instead of a single phase for accurate diagnosis for clinical applications. We have proposed a framework that can perform segmentation from quadriphasic CT data. The liver was segmented using a fine-tuned SegNet model and the liver tumor was segmented using the K-means clustering method coupled with a power-law transformation-based image enhancement technique. The best values for liver segmentation achieved were: Dice Coefficient = 96.46 ± 0.48%, Jaccard Index = 93.16 ± 0.89%, volumetric overlap error = 6.84 ± 0.89% and average symmetric surface distance = 0.59 ± 0.3 mm and the results for liver tumor delineation were Dice Coefficient = 85.07 ± 4.5%, Jaccard Index = 74.29 ± 6.8%, volumetric overlap error = 25.71 ± 6.8% and average symmetric surface distance = 1.14 ± 1.3 mm. The proposed liver segmentation method based on deep learning is fully automatic, robust, and effective for all phases. The image enhancement technique has shown promising results and aided in better liver tumor segmentation. The liver tumors were segmented satisfactorily; however, improvements concerning false positive reduction can further increase the accuracy.  相似文献

COVID-19 has been considered one of the recent epidemics that occurred at the last of 2019 and the beginning of 2020 that world widespread. This spread of COVID-19 requires a fast technique for diagnosis to make the appropriate decision for the treatment. X-ray images are one of the most classifiable images that are used widely in diagnosing patients’ data depending on radiographs due to their structures and tissues that could be classified. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) is the most accurate classification technique used to diagnose COVID-19 because of the ability to use a different number of convolutional layers and its high classification accuracy. Classification using CNNs techniques requires a large number of images to learn and obtain satisfactory results. In this paper, we used SqueezNet with a modified output layer to classify X-ray images into three groups: COVID-19, normal, and pneumonia. In this study, we propose a deep learning method with enhance the features of X-ray images collected from Kaggle, Figshare to distinguish between COVID-19, Normal, and Pneumonia infection. In this regard, several techniques were used on the selected image samples which are Unsharp filter, Histogram equal, and Complement image to produce another view of the dataset. The Squeeze Net CNN model has been tested in two scenarios using the 13,437 X-ray images that include 4479 for each type (COVID-19, Normal and Pneumonia). In the first scenario, the model has been tested without any enhancement on the datasets. It achieved an accuracy of 91%. But, in the second scenario, the model was tested using the same previous images after being improved by several techniques and the performance was high at approximately 95%. The conclusion of this study is the used model gives higher accuracy results for enhanced images compared with the accuracy results for the original images. A comparison of the outcomes demonstrated the effectiveness of our DL method for classifying COVID-19 based on enhanced X-ray images.  相似文献
