This paper considers the estimation of Cobb-Douglas production functions using panel data covering a large sample of companies observed for a small number of time periods. GMM estimatorshave been found to produce large finite-sample biases when using the standard first-differenced estimator. These biases can be dramatically reduced by exploiting reasonable stationarity restrictions on the initial conditions process. Using data for a panel of R&Dperforming US manufacturing companies we find that the additional instruments used in our extended GMM estimator yield much more reasonable parameter estimates.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider dynamic panel data models where the autoregressive parameter changes over time. We propose the GMM and ML estimators for this model. We conduct Monte Carlo simulation to compare the performance of these two estimators. The simulation results show that the ML estimator outperforms the GMM estimator.  相似文献

This paper proposes a generalized least squares and a generalized method of moment estimators for dynamic panel data models with both individual-specific and time-specific effects. We also demonstrate that the common estimators ignoring the presence of time-specific effects are inconsistent when N→∞N but T is finite if the time-specific effects are indeed present. Monte Carlo studies are also conducted to investigate the finite sample properties of various estimators. It is found that the generalized least squares estimator has the smallest bias and root mean square error, and also has nominal size close to the empirical size. It is also found that even when there is no presence of time-specific effects, there is hardly any efficiency loss of the generalized least squares estimator assuming its presence compared to the generalized least squares estimator allowing only the presence of individual-specific effects.  相似文献

We suggest a generalized spatial system GMM (SGMM) estimation for short dynamic panel data models with spatial errors and fixed effects when n is large and T is fixed (usually small). Monte Carlo studies are conducted to evaluate the finite sample properties with the quasi-maximum likelihood estimation (QMLE). The results show that, QMLE, with a proper approximation for initial observation, performs better than SGMM in general cases. However, it performs poorly when spatial dependence is large. QMLE and SGMM perform better for different parameters when there is unknown heteroscedasticity in the disturbances and the data are highly persistent. Both estimates are not sensitive to the treatment of initial values. Estimation of the spatial autoregressive parameter is generally biased when either the data are highly persistent or spatial dependence is large. Choices of spatial weights matrices and the sign of spatial dependence do affect the performance of the estimates, especially in the case of the heteroscedastic disturbance. We also give empirical guidelines for the model.  相似文献

The paper analyses the biasing effect of anonymising micro data by multiplicative stochastic noise on the within estimation of a linear panel model. In short panels, additional bias results from serially correlated regressors. Results in this paper are related to the project “Firms’ Panel Data and Factual Anonymisation,” which is financed by Federal Ministry of Education and Research. We would like to thank the anonymous referees for helpful comments.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper proposes an exponential class of dynamic binary choice panel data models for the analysis of short T (time dimension) large N (cross section dimension) panel data sets that allow for unobserved heterogeneity (fixed effects) to be arbitrarily correlated with the covariates. The paper derives moment conditions that are invariant to the fixed effects which are then used to identify and estimate the parameters of the model. Accordingly, generalized method of moments (GMM) estimators are proposed that are consistent and asymptotically normally distributed at the root-N rate. We also study the conditional likelihood approach and show that under exponential specification, it can identify the effect of state dependence but not the effects of other covariates. Monte Carlo experiments show satisfactory finite sample performance for the proposed estimators and investigate their robustness to misspecification.  相似文献

This article extends the spatial panel data regression with fixed-effects to the case where the regression function is partially linear and some regressors may be endogenous or predetermined. Under the assumption that the spatial weighting matrix is strictly exogenous, we propose a sieve two stage least squares (S2SLS) regression. Under some sufficient conditions, we show that the proposed estimator for the finite dimensional parameter is root-N consistent and asymptotically normally distributed and that the proposed estimator for the unknown function is consistent and also asymptotically normally distributed but at a rate slower than root-N. Consistent estimators for the asymptotic variances of the proposed estimators are provided. A small scale simulation study is conducted, and the simulation results show that the proposed procedure has good finite sample performance.

Primal panel data models of production risk are estimated, using more flexible specifications than has previously been the practice. Production risk has important implications for the analysis of technology adoption and technical efficiency, since risk averse producers will take into account both the mean and variance of output when ranking alternative technologies. Hence, one should estimate technical change separately for the deterministic part and the risk part of thetechnology.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider a partially linear panel data model with nonstationarity and certain cross-sectional dependence. Accounting for the explosive feature of the nonstationary time series, we particularly employ Hermite orthogonal functions in this study. Under a general spatial error dependence structure, we then establish some consistent closed-form estimates for both the unknown parameters and the unknown functions for the cases where N and T go jointly to infinity. Rates of convergence and asymptotic normalities are established for the proposed estimators. Both the finite sample performance and the empirical applications show that the proposed estimation methods work well.  相似文献

Panel data with covariate measurement error appear frequently in various studies. Due to the sampling design and/or missing data, panel data are often unbalanced in the sense that panels have different sizes. For balanced panel data (i.e., panels having the same size), there exists a generalized method of moments (GMM) approach for adjusting covariate measurement error, which does not require additional validation data. This paper extends the GMM approach of adjusting covariate measurement error to unbalanced panel data. Two health related longitudinal surveys are used to illustrate the implementation of the proposed method.  相似文献

Bayesian analysis of panel data using an MTAR model   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Bayesian analysis of panel data using a class of momentum threshold autoregressive (MTAR) models is considered. Posterior estimation of parameters of the MTAR models is done by using a simple Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm. Selection of appropriate differenced variables, test for asymmetry and unit roots are recast as model selections and a simple way of computing posterior probabilities of the candidate models is proposed. The proposed method is applied to the yearly unemployment rates of 51 US states and the results show strong evidence of stationarity and asymmetry.  相似文献

This article develops the adaptive elastic net generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator in large-dimensional models with potentially (locally) invalid moment conditions, where both the number of structural parameters and the number of moment conditions may increase with the sample size. The basic idea is to conduct the standard GMM estimation combined with two penalty terms: the adaptively weighted lasso shrinkage and the quadratic regularization. It is a one-step procedure of valid moment condition selection, nonzero structural parameter selection (i.e., model selection), and consistent estimation of the nonzero parameters. The procedure achieves the standard GMM efficiency bound as if we know the valid moment conditions ex ante, for which the quadratic regularization is important. We also study the tuning parameter choice, with which we show that selection consistency still holds without assuming Gaussianity. We apply the new estimation procedure to dynamic panel data models, where both the time and cross-section dimensions are large. The new estimator is robust to possible serial correlations in the regression error terms.  相似文献

Classical omnibus and more recent methods are adapted to panel data situations in order to jointly test for normality of the error components. The test statistics incorporate either the empirical distribution function or the empirical characteristic function, these functions resulting from estimation of the fixed and random components. Monte Carlo results show that the new procedure based on the empirical characteristic function compares favorably with classical methods.  相似文献

This article introduces the appropriate within estimators for the most frequently used three-dimensional fixed effects panel data models. It analyzes the behavior of these estimators in the cases of no self-flow data, unbalanced data, and dynamic autoregressive models. The main results are then generalized for higher dimensional panel data sets as well.  相似文献

In this article, we consider the estimation of semiparametric panel data smooth coefficient models. We propose a class of local generalized method of moments (LGMM) estimators that are simple and easy to implement in practice. We show that the proposed LGMM estimators are consistent and asymptotically normal. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that our proposed estimator performs quite well in finite samples. An empirical application using a large panel of U.K. firms is also presented.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the problem of obtaining best linear unbiased estimators of individual response coefficients in a Random Coefficient Linear Regression (RCR} Model, comparing alternative estimators for these response vectors through a simulation study. We also provide an empirical example that illustrates the estimation procedure proposed here.  相似文献

This article considers first-order autoregressive panel model that is a simple model for dynamic panel data (DPD) models. The generalized method of moments (GMM) gives efficient estimators for these models. This efficiency is affected by the choice of the weighting matrix that has been used in GMM estimation. The non-optimal weighting matrices have been used in the conventional GMM estimators. This led to a loss of efficiency. Therefore, we present new GMM estimators based on optimal or suboptimal weighting matrices. Monte Carlo study indicates that the bias and efficiency of the new estimators are more reliable than the conventional estimators.  相似文献

In this research, we describe a nonparametric time-varying coefficient model for the analysis of panel count data. We extend the traditional panel count data models by incorporating B-splines estimates of time-varying coefficients. We show that the proposed model can be implemented using a nonparametric maximum pseudo-likelihood method. We further examine the theoretical properties of the estimators of model parameters. The operational characteristics of the proposed method are evaluated through a simulation study. For illustration, we analyse data from a study of childhood wheezing, and describe the time-varying effect of an inflammatory marker on the risk of wheezing.  相似文献
