IntroductionThe objective of this research is to describe how perceived infectability, germ aversion, and fear of COVID-19 in adults in Madrid have changed from the beginning of the pandemic until the lockdown exit phase and their influence on dental care behaviour.Materials and MethodsSome 961 participants were monitored in a study in Madrid at 2 time points: before lockdown (T0) and after completion of the total lockdown (T1). A questionnaire that included basic sociodemographic variables, the perceived vulnerability to disease scale (including perceived infectability and germ aversion), the fear of COVID-19 scale, and dental visiting behaviour after confinement for fear of COVID was administered.ResultsThe participants had higher scores for infectability and germ aversion at T1 than at T0 (P < 0.01). Of those studied, 24.5% (235) of the participants would not go to the dentist for fear of COVID-19. Those who had a high perceived infectability scale score were at least 5 times more likely to not visit the dentist. Those with high COVID-19 fear were at least 6 times more likely to not visit the dentist, and those older than 60 years were 8 times more likely to not visit.ConclusionsThe population's high levels of vulnerability to infectability and perceived germ aversion associated with fear of COVID-19 and the resultant avoidance behaviour to dental care will remain until an effective drug or vaccine for SARS-CoV2 is found.  相似文献

The number of graduates from dental hygiene programs continues to increase, but retention of dental hygienists in practices is a concern. The numbers of graduates from dental assisting and especially dental laboratory technology programs are decreasing. The impact on dental practice size and practice productivity is considered.  相似文献

Background

Population health needs are changing. The levels of dental caries and periodontal disease across the population as a whole is falling. The proportion of adults with a functional dentition in many developed countries has increased substantially and edentulous rates have dropped to some of their lowest levels. Despite this, a pronounced social gradient still exists, many adults do not attend dental services regularly and disease in young children remains intransigent amongst the poorest. New challenges are emerging too as the growing number of older people, above sixty-five years of age, retain their teeth.

Methods

Ensuring “the right number of people with the right skills are in the right place at the right time to provide the right services to the right people” is critical for future dental service provision, both to meet the new challenges ahead and to ensure future services are cost-effective, efficient and reduce health-inequalities. Greater use of “skill-mix” models could have a substantial role in the future, as dentistry moves from a “cure” to a “care” culture.

Discussion

The provision of dental services in many countries currently adopts a “one-size-fits-all”, where the dentist is the main care-giver and the emphasis is on intervention. As needs change in the future, the whole of the dental team should be utilised to deliver primary, secondary and tertiary prevention in an integrated model. Growing evidence suggests that other members of the dental team are effective in providing care, but introducing this paradigm shift is not without its challenges. The provision of incentives within funding systems and social acceptability are amongst the key determinants in producing a service that is responsive to need, improves access and delivers equity.

Periodontists who become diplomates of the American Board of Periodontology do so for many reasons. The intent of this paper is to explore the motivational factors of a select group of periodontists who have become diplomates. A survey questionnaire was mailed to 129 diplomates (1980-1984) asking them the question: "What motivated you to obtain diplomatic status in the American Board of Periodontology?" The answers from 95 diplomates were as varied as the individual respondents, but the principal motive was "personal achievement." This internalization for the need to become a diplomate was dominant over all external influences. Calculations made since January 1979 and the comments from the participants in this study strongly suggest that additional enticements must be forthcoming to draw more periodontists into diplomate status.  相似文献

Time has proven that expert valuation of dental practices combines both art and science. The valuation results will vary according to the methods used, and, frequently, the most difficult task is to reconcile the various values derived through different acceptable valuation techniques.  相似文献

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a dramatic impact on international medicine practice. The propensity for head and neck surgery to generate aerosols needs special consideration over and above simply adopting personal protective equipment. This study sought to interrogate the literature and evaluate whether which additional measures might provide benefit if routinely adopted in minimising viral transmission.  相似文献

There are several government agencies that may inspect your dental practice. The majority of inspections are carried out by the National Employment Rights Authority, the Health and Safety Authority, the Revenue Commissioners and the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland. Below is a summary of the minimum requirements that should be in place to ensure compliance with the relevant legislation. You should always seek appropriate advice for your own particular circumstances.  相似文献

The internet is becoming a more and more powerful tool and many dental practitioners use it to advertise their dental service; some dental practices even offer on-line appointment booking! It is not unreasonable to surmise that use of the internet is likely to become increasingly common practice by dentists in the future. This is not surprising as the World Wide Web (WWW) provides an opportunity for dentists to advertise themselves and their practices to a wide audience in a relatively economical manner.  相似文献
