[Month of Birth and Partner Choice. A Critical Comment]

Until now the literature concerning this subject has not given convincing evidence of a relationship between the number of divorces of married couples and the month of their birth. The results, however, suggest that couples born in the same month marry less frequently and therefore are less often divorced than other couples.

Curing of chronic leucemias and malignant lymphomas is the most successful stem cell based therapy up to date. However, mismatches of histocompatibility‐complexes (HLA‐types) between receiver and donor set narrow limits to such therapies. Whether other diseases such as Parkinson could be cured by infusion of stem cells is still in question.

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is the most common genetic cause for end-stage renal failure. Numerous fluid-filled cysts develop in the parenchyma of the kidney. They compromise kidney function with increasing number and size of the cysts until renal failure is inevitable. The cysts are epithelial in origin but cysts develop in different nephron segments depending on the type of the PKD. Animal models with PKD have been used for several decades to unravel the molecular mechanisms of cystogenesis. Initially, research was dependent on the morphological analysis of spontaneously emerging cystic phenotypes. Nowadays, in addition to theses models transgenic and knock-out models targeting PKD genes are also available. The localization of “cystoproteins” in the cilia of the tubulus epithelia and the involvement of cilia-dependent pathways in cystogenesis was shown only with the help of these animal models. This article gives an overview on the currently available murine models presenting with PKD.

Ink-sacs were discovered within the living-chambers of ten specimens ofEleganticeras elegantulum (Y. & B., 1828) from glacial drift material of Toarcian age, found in the vicinity of Hamburg (so-called Ahrensburger Liasknollen). Some of them still contain ink. Shape and relative size of the ink-sacs are similar to those ofLoligo and the recent octopuses.

Summary Pre-infection of cells (grown in nutrient broth) with the fr mutant A105 resulted in partial exclusion of superinfecting fr, as determined with single burst experiments. The extent of exclusion increased with the time interval between A105- and fr-input. Pre-infection of cells (grown in yeast tryptone broth) with fr suppressed the formation of superinfecting A105, pre-infection with A105 however did not suppress the formation of superinfecting fr (determined as serum-resistant PFU). Simultaneous infection of cells, grown in yeast tryptone broth, with fr and A105 showed in single-burst experiments double infection to occur: 50% of the single bursts contained both plaque types.Rescue of the host-dependent f2 mutants su-1 and su-3 could be demonstrated with the fr mutant A105.With su-1, rescue could only be demonstrated if cells were simultaneously infected or if A105 preceeded su-1. Pre-infection with su-1 resulted in exclusion of A105. With su-3 the reverse was found: pre-infection with A105 resulted in exclusion of the f2 mutant, pre-infection with su-3 permitted rescue with A105. Removal of unadsorbed phages between inputs did not influence the yield of rescued phage.

Erfahrungen mit Streptomyceten-Dauerkulturen

Zusammenfassung An Hand eines größeren Materials wird über die Haltbarkeit von Streptomyceten-Öl-Kulturen berichtet. Nach 4–6 Jahren wuchsen 5% nicht mehr an. Die am Leben gebliebenen zeigten meist keine Luftmycelbildung mehr und mußten durch Passagen erst regeneriert werden.Eine für Sammlungen geeignete Methode zum Anlegen von Streptomyceten-Erdkulturen (in Lößlehm) wird beschrieben; sie wuchsen nach 11/2 Jahren alle an, meist unter Förderung der Luftmycelbildung.

Dressurversuche mit Igeln

Zusammenfassung Dressurversuche haben gezeigt, daß Igel in weitgehendem Maße befähigt sind, die Formen flächengleicher schwarzer Figuren auf weißem Grunde optisch zu unterscheiden. Sie richten sich dabei nach dem Konturreichtum und der Aufgelöstheit der Umrisse. Auf farblose Helligkeitsunterschiede dressierte Igel wählen relativ. Die Helligkeiten der farbigen Hering-Papiere werden von den Igeln ähnlich gesehen wie von helladaptierten farbentüchtigen Menschen. Der Igel ist farbentüchtig, sieht die Farben aber wohl weniger gesättigt als der normale Mensch. Das Erlernen einfacher Labyrinthe erfolgt beim Igel ähnlich wie beim Meerschweinchen. Igel (und Meerschweinchen) sind auf einen zeitlichen Rechts-Links-Rhythmus dressierbar. In Schiebetürversuchen dressieren sich die Igel selbst darauf, eine bestimmte Schieberichtung zu bevorzugen.Herrn Professor Baron J. v. Uexküll zum 70.
