Ultrasonic velocity is widely used in the investigation of material properties. Physical dimensions such as sample thickness and surface profile can also be the information sought after in nondestructive testing. In a conventional ultrasonic measurement, however, the measured quantity is usually the time-of-flight, not velocity or thickness. When either velocity or thickness is precisely known, the other can be easily deduced. Unfortunately in many cases, neither the velocity nor the thickness is known to the required precision, or they can both vary spatially. A method is therefore needed to map out the spatial distribution of the velocity and thickness simultaneously. The ability to image the surface profiles that give rise to the thickness variation is also desirable. Simultaneous velocity and thickness scan can be implemented in a number of configurations and have been reported by a number of authors in the literature. This paper focuses on the ability of this technique to image very small changes in velocity and thickness simultaneously. This technique is also extended to map out the surface elevation contours and cross-sectional profiles of a sample. Special considerations for achieving accurate and reliable velocity, thickness and profile images are discussed in detail. This technique for nondestructive evaluation and material characterization is then demonstrated using three industrially relevant materials: (1) plasma sprayed thermal barrier coating, (2) composite laminates containing foreign objects and anomalies, and (3) creep/rupture tested superalloy samples. 相似文献

A new dimensional air gauging technology was successfully developed using the steepest improvement approach. The steepest improvement technique was fashioned for the continuous never-ending improvement of the compensating air gauges, and it can lead the investigative process quickly along the path of steepest improvement to a better air gauging system. Several very different air gauge designs with progressively improved dynamic performance were discovered, reducing the setting time from 118 to 10 ms. Ultrasonics is a powerful technique for inspecting and characterizing industrial materials. It not only can detect bulk and surface flaws, but also obtain information on material microstructure, which determines engineering properties, such as elastic moduli and ultimate strength. However, traditional ultrasound requires liquid or contact coupling for its generation and detection, making it difficult or impossible to apply in many industrial situations. This occurs, in particular, on curved parts and on parts at elevated temperature, a situation widely found in industrial products and during the processing of industrial materials.Through a continuing effort that started more than 10 years ago, the Industrial Materials Institute of the National Research Council of Canada working in collaboration with UltraOptec Inc. has developed a technique called laser-ultrasonics, that circumvents the limitations of the conventional techniques. This novel technique is based on the generation and detection of ultrasound with lasers. The technology we have developed has been demonstrated to be applicable to real industrial conditions. In particular, a system was brought to a steel mill to measure on-line the wall thickness of tubes at 1000°C moving at 4 m/s. The capability of our technology to inspect advanced aircrafts made of composite materials was also demonstrated by inspecting a CF-18 in the hangar of a maintenance facility. Selective assembly is an effective approach for improving the quality of a product that is composed of two mating components, when the quality characteristic of the product is the clearance between the mating components. In this approach, the components are sorted into several groups according to their dimensions, and the product is assembled by randomly selecting mating components from corresponding groups. A number of previous studies focused on equal width partitioning schemes, in which the dimensional distributions of the two components are partitioned so that all groups have equal widths. When there is a large difference between the variances of the two component dimensions, equal width partitioning will result in a large number of surplus components due to differences between the numbers of components in corresponding groups. Some authors have proposed a method of manufacturing the component with smaller variance at three shifted means to cope with this difficulty. In the present paper, an optimal manufacturing mean design that minimises the number of surplus components is derived. It is shown that the use of the optimal design considerably reduces the number of surplus components compared with using another previously proposed manufacturing mean design and the no-shift design. 相似文献

Solche Prozesse sind mehrstufige Bedienungsprozesse mit gemischter Anordnung der Bedienungseinrichtungen. Außerdem besitzen sie stark ausgeprägte räumliche Aspekte.
