We investigate the magnetically confined states of the massless Dirac fermions in a graphene quantum dot formed by the inhomogeneous distributions of the magnetic fields inside and outside the dot. The calculated energy spectrum exhibits quite different features with and without the magnetic field inside the dot. It is found that the degeneracy of the relativistic Landau level with negative angular momenta can be lifted, and this degeneracy breaking can be modulated by the magnetic field inside the dot. Moreover, such a system can form the strongly localized states within the dot and along its boundary, especially with the magnetic field inside the dot.  相似文献

We study the reactivity of a metallic quantum dot when exposed to a gas phase CO molecule. First, we perform a Newns-Anderson model calculation in which the valence electrons of the quantum dot are confined by a finite potential well and the molecule is characterized by its lowest unoccupied molecular orbital in the gas phase. A pronounced quantum size effect regarding the charge transfer between the quantum dot and molecule is observed. We then perform a first-principles calculation for a selected size interval. The quantum dot is described within the jellium model and the molecule by pseudopotentials. Our results show that the charge transfer between the quantum dot and the molecule depends critically on the size of the quantum dot, and that this dependence is intimately connected with the electronic structure. The key factor for charge transfer is the presence of states with the symmetry of the chemically active molecular orbital at the Fermi level.  相似文献

Here we review the basic optical spectra of quantum dot molecules. We apply a simple and straightforward model to calculate charge stability regions in vertically coupled double dot molecules that are embedded in a Schottky diode. This model allows us to relate features in the optical spectrum to the diode structure. The underlying concepts allow one to design quantum dot molecules functionalized for optical operations.  相似文献

Absence of odd-even parity behavior for Kondo resonances in quantum dots   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Zero-bias anomalies in the conductance through quantum dots have recently been identified as Kondo resonances and explained in terms of the Anderson impurity model. The effect requires a degeneracy and it has been proposed that this should occur for odd electron numbers on the dot. In this paper we present data, obtained on a split-gate quantum dot with a small number of electrons, which are in disagreement with this expectation. The mapping of the Anderson model on the quantum dot is discussed in terms of an interacting N electron system demonstrating why this expectation can fail.  相似文献

We study the full counting statistics of charge transport through a quantum dot tunnel coupled to one normal and one superconducting lead with a large superconducting gap. As a function of the level detuning, there is a crossover from a regime with strong superconducting correlations in the quantum dot to a regime in which the proximity effect on the quantum dot is suppressed. We analyze the current fluctuations of this crossover in the shot-noise regime. In particular, we predict that the full counting statistics changes from Poissonian with charge 2e, typical for Cooper pairs, to Poissonian with charge e, when the superconducting proximity effect is present. Thus, the onset of the superconducting proximity effect is revealed by the reduction of the Fano factor from 2 to 1.  相似文献

We have fabricated a few-electron quantum dot that can be tuned down to zero electrons while maintaining strong coupling to the leads. Using a nearby quantum point contact as a charge sensor, we can determine the absolute number of electrons in the quantum dot. We find several sharp peaks in the differential conductance, occurring at both zero and finite source-drain bias, for the one- and two-electron quantum dot. We attribute the peaks at finite bias to a Kondo effect through excited states of the quantum dot and investigate the magnetic field dependence of these Kondo resonances.  相似文献

We have obtained the quantum phase diagram of a one-dimensional superconducting quantum dot lattice using the extended Bose-Hubbard model for different commensurabilities. We describe the nature of different quantum phases at the charge degeneracy point. We find a direct phase transition from the Mott insulating phase to the superconducting phase for integer band fillings of Cooper pairs. We predict explicitly the presence of two kinds of repulsive Luttinger liquid phases, besides the charge density wave and superconducting phases for half-integer band fillings. We also predict that extended range interactions are necessary to obtain the correct phase boundary of a one-dimensional interacting Cooper system. We have used the density matrix renormalization group method and Abelian bosonization to study our system.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate adiabatic charge and spin pumping through interacting quantum dots using non-equilibrium Green's function techniques and the equation-of-motion method. We treat the electronic correlations inside the dot using a Hartree-Fock approximation and succeed in obtaining closed analytic expressions for the Keldysh Green's functions. These allow us to compute charge and spin currents through the quantum dot. Depending on the parameters of the quantum dot and its coupling to the reservoirs, we show that it can be found in two different regimes: the magnetic regime and the non-magnetic regime. In the magnetic regime we find a non-vanishing spin current in addition to the charge current present in both cases.  相似文献

We report the observation of dressed states of a quantum dot. The optically excited exciton and biexciton states of the quantum dot are coupled by a strong laser field and the resulting spectral signatures are measured using differential transmission of a probe field. We demonstrate that the anisotropic electron-hole exchange interaction induced splitting between the x- and y-polarized excitonic states can be completely erased by using the ac-Stark effect induced by the coupling field, without causing any appreciable broadening of the spectral lines. We also show that by varying the polarization and strength of a resonant coupling field, we can effectively change the polarization axis of the quantum dot.  相似文献

Spin and charge transport through a quantum dot coupled to external nonmagnetic leads is analyzed theoretically in terms of the non-equilibrium Green function formalism based on the equation of motion method. The dot is assumed to be subject to spin and charge bias, and the considerations are focused on the Kondo effect in spin and charge transport. It is shown that the differential spin conductance as a function of spin bias reveals a typical zero-bias Kondo anomaly which becomes split when either magnetic field or charge bias are applied. Significantly different behavior is found for mixed charge/spin conductance. The influence of electron-phonon coupling in the dot on tunneling current as well as on both spin and charge conductance is also analyzed.  相似文献

We investigate the effect of the charge state measurement of the Kondo singlet in a quantum dot transistor via a capacitively coupled quantum point contact detector. By employing the variational ansatz for the singlet ground state of the quantum dot combined with the density matrix formulation for the coupled system, we show that the coherent Kondo singlet is destroyed by the phase-sensitive as well as the current-sensitive detection in the transmission and reflection coefficients at the quantum point contact. We argue that the phase-sensitive component of the decoherence rate may explain the anomalous features observed in a recent experiment by Avinun-Kalish et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 156801 (2004)]. We also discuss the correlations of the shot noise at the quantum point contact detector and the decoherence in the quantum dot.  相似文献

We find that Kondo resonant conductance can occur in a quantum dot in the Coulomb blockade regime with an even number of electrons N. The contacts are attached to the dot in a pillar configuration, and a magnetic field B( perpendicular) along the axis is applied. B( perpendicular) lifts the spin degeneracy of the dot energies. Usually, this prevents the system from developing the Kondo effect. Tuning B( perpendicular) to the value B(*) where levels with different total spin cross restores both the degeneracy and the Kondo effect. We analyze a dot charged with N = 2 electrons. Coupling to the contacts is antiferromagnetic due to a spin selection rule and, in the Kondo state, the charge is unchanged while the total spin on the dot is S = 1/2.  相似文献

We present measurements of the rates for an electron to tunnel on and off a quantum dot, obtained using a quantum point contact charge sensor. The tunnel rates show exponential dependence on drain-source bias and plunger gate voltages. The tunneling process is shown to be elastic, and a model describing tunneling in terms of the dot energy relative to the height of the tunnel barrier quantitatively describes the measurements.  相似文献

Ice states, in which frustrated interactions lead to a macroscopic ground-state degeneracy, occur in water ice, in problems of frustrated charge order on the pyrochlore lattice, and in the family of rare-earth magnets collectively known as spin ice. Of particular interest at the moment are "quantum spin-ice" materials, where large quantum fluctuations may permit tunnelling between a macroscopic number of different classical ground states. Here we use zero-temperature quantum Monte Carlo simulations to show how such tunnelling can lift the degeneracy of a spin or charge ice, stabilizing a unique "quantum-ice" ground state-a quantum liquid with excitations described by the Maxwell action of (3+1)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics. We further identify a competing ordered squiggle state, and show how both squiggle and quantum-ice states might be distinguished in neutron scattering experiments on a spin-ice material.  相似文献

Studies of electronic charge transport through semiconductor double quantum dots rely on a conventional "hole" model of transport in the three-electron regime. We show that experimental measurements of charge transport through a Si double quantum dot in this regime cannot be fully explained using the conventional picture. Using a Hartree-Fock (HF) formalism and relevant HF energy parameters extracted from transport data in the multiple-electron regime, we identify a novel spin-flip cotunneling process that lifts a singlet blockade.  相似文献

Inelastic transport through double quantum dot systems with coupling between electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom is examined by means of a master equation approach. The current and the conductance are analyzed for both weak and strong interdot couplings. The results show that an asymmetry in the current-voltage characteristic and appearance of negative differential conductance due to electron-phonon interaction. The influence of temperature on the current is studied and found that increasing temperature gives rise to eliminating the current blockade and, thus, removing the Coulomb diamonds in the conductance spectra.  相似文献

We have investigated the influence of an external electric field on the binding energies and polaronic shifts of the ground and some first few excited states of a hydrogenic impurity in a spherical quantum dot by taking into account the image charge effect. By using Landau–Pekar variational method the general analytical expression is obtained for the impurity bound-polaron energies. It has been numerically identified the conditions (electric field, nominal radius of quantum dot, etc.) in which the bound-polaron states can be existence in GaAs quantum dot. We have shown that the polaronic shifts in the binding energy of 1s-like state are the same in cases with and without image charge effect while they for 2s-like state are not coincide and have different monotonic behavior versus confinement potential. Electron–phonon interaction lifts the degeneracy of the 2px-, 2py-, and 2pz-like states of a donor impurity and reduces their binding energies.  相似文献

We study dc charge and spin transport through a weakly coupled quantum dot, driven by a nonadiabatic periodic change of system parameters. We generalize the model of Tien and Gordon to simultaneously oscillating voltages and tunnel couplings. When applying our general result to the two-parameter charge pumping in quantum dots, we find interference effects between the oscillations of the voltage and tunnel couplings. We show that these interference effects may explain recent measurements in metallic islands. Furthermore, we discuss the possibility to electrically pump a spin current in presence of a static magnetic field.  相似文献

In this Letter we study the Friedel phase of the electron transport in two different systems of quantum dots which exhibit bound states in the continuum (BIC). The Friedel phase jumps abruptly in the energies of the BICs, which is associated to the vanishing width of these states, as shown by Friedrich and Wintgen in [H. Friedrich, D. Wintgen, Phys. Rev. A 31 (1985) 3964]. This odd behavior of the Friedel phase has consequences in the charge through the Friedel sum rule. Namely, if the energy of the BIC drops under the Fermi energy the charge changes abruptly in a unity. We show that this behavior closely relates to discontinuities in the conductance predicted for interacting quantum dot systems.  相似文献
