Geochemical Characteristics of Sedimentary Manganese Deposit of Guichi, Anhui Province, China

The sedimentary manganese deposits occurring in Gufeng formation of the Permian in Guichi area, south Anhui Province, include manganese carbonate deposit formed by sedimentation, and manganese oxide deposit made by later oxidation. The total REE contents of these samples are relatively low ( ＜ 250 × 10-6), belonging to LREE-enriched type,showing LREE enrichment during the process of formation of Mn deposit, especially during Mn-oxidizing process. Three normalized REE patterns and SCNA-normalized trace elements spider diagrams of the Mn-bearing sequence rocks and ores in this area reflect their same origin of ore sources, which is similar to rock-forming and ore-forming conditions. The Mnforming materials primarily came from the continent with higher mature degree and single material source. The δEu and δCe negative anomaly and Ce anomaly ( ＜ - 0.1 ) manifest that Mn-bearing sequence of the Permian was mostly formed in marine basin and oxidative environment. The Sr and Ba anomaly, Sr/Ba and Co/Ni values reflect the Mn deposit environment was of deep water and high-salinity of marine facies. Although the Ce/La (mean 1.05), Y/Ho (25 ～ 41.5) and trace metals show a variety of correlations with Mn in the ten rock samples, which show multiple sources for the manganese, the analysis of geochemical characteristics indicate that the material sources of Mn deposit have been primarily terrestrially derived. Another source of the manganese probably comes from the seafloor volcanism in this area. Analysis of sedimentary features and geohistoric evolvement reveals that the maximum transgression of the Qixia Period, ore district is then in deep shelf-basin sedimentary setting and the Mn-bearing sequence is deposited.     

Evolving concepts of diagnosis, pathogenesis, and therapy of Sj?gren's syndrome

Differences in diagnostic criteria for Sj?gren's Syndrome (SS) have led to confusion in the research literature and in clinical practice. A particular challenge is the clinical diagnosis of the patients with sicca symptoms, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, vague cognitive defects, and a low titer antinuclear antibody. Until recently, many of these patients would have been classified as primary SS using the European criteria. A suggested revision of the European criteria will require inclusion of anti SS-A antibody or characteristic minor salivary gland biopsy, leading to greater agreement between European and San Diego criteria. Recent studies have emphasized that lacrimal and salivary gland flow involves an entire "functional" unit that includes the mucosal surface (the site of inflammation), efferent nerve signals sent to the midbrain (lacrimatory and salvatory nucleus), efferent neural signals from the brain, and acinal/ductal structures in the gland. Thus, symptoms of dryness or pain can result from interferences with any part of this functional unit. The initiating antigens in SS remain unknown, but immune reactivity against SS-A, SS-B, fodrin, alpha- amylase, and carbonic anhydrase have been demonstrated in patients with established disease. The inflammatory process in the gland releases metalloproteinases that alter the relationship of epithelial cells to their matrix, an interaction that is necessary for glandular function and survival. Therapies for SS remain inadequate. In SS patients with immune-mediated extraglandular manifestation (ie, lung, kidney, skin, nerve), the therapeutic approach is similar to systemic lupus erythematosus, although these therapies have relatively little effect on tear or saliva flow.     

The overcitation of examples of poor performance: Fad, fashion, or fun?

Comments on the article by J. J. Christensen-Szalanski and L. R. Beach (see record 1984-21471-001) that suggests that they have uncovered a bias, the propensity to cite experimental publications that demonstrate deficiencies in judgment and decision making over studies that demonstrate competence. Synthesis,spectral characterization,thermal and biological studies of lanthanide(Ⅲ) complexes of oxyphenbutazone

Lanthanide(III) complexes of 4-butyl-1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-phenyl-3,5-pyrazolidinedione(OPB) were prepared by homogeneous precipitation. The solid complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, magnetic susceptibility data, molar conductivity measurements and IR, UV-Vis, mass,1H NMR and13C NMR spectral methods. The thermal decomposition of the complexes under static air atmosphere was investigated by simultaneous TG/DTG at a heating rate of 10 °C/min. The final decomposition products were found to be metal oxides. The spectroscopic data suggested that OPB acted as a bidentate, mono-ionic ligand coordinating through two carbonyl oxygens of the pyrazolidinedione ring. The kinetic and thermodynamic parameters such as activation energy, pre-exponential factor and entropy of activation for each step of the decomposition reactions were evaluated using Coats-Redfern and MacCallum-Tanner equations. The negative entropy values of the complexes indicated that the activated complexes had a more ordered structure than the reactant and that the reactions were slower than normal. Investigations of antimicrobial activity of the compounds were carried out by the disk diffusion technique.     

The Thermodynamics of Cu-La,Cu-Ce Systems

The Cu-La,Cu-Ce systems have been optimized using the recommended phase diagrams and the experi-mental thermodynamic values reported in the recent years.The optimization results are in good agreement withthe experimental data.     

Rare earth element（REE） geochemistry of phosphorites of the Sonrai area of Paleoproterozoic Bijawar basin,Uttar Pradesh,India

The rare earth element(REE) data from the Paleoproterozoic Bijawar basin,Sonrai phosphorites were used to interpret the depositional conditions of the phosphorites.The post archean Australian shales(PAAS) normalized REE patterns of the Sonrai phosphorites were characterized by negative Ce and positive Eu anomalies.Middle rare earth elements(MREE)-enrichment was a characteristic feature.Phosphorites showing the diagenetic effects on the REE patterns were limited.The observed Eu anomaly was indicative of an anoxic(or sulphate reducing) diagenetic environment of phosphate formation.Mixing of sea water and upwelling during the Paleoproterozoic was responsible for the recording of positive Eu and negative Ce anomalies in the Sonrai phosphorites.     

The Friction Stress of the Hall–Petch Relationship of Pure Mg and Solid Solutions of Al,Zn, and Gd

Temperature and solute concentration effects on the friction stress, σ_o, of cast (texture-free) polycrystals of pure Mg, and of Mg-Al, -Zn and -Gd binary solid solutions are discussed using phenomenological arguments. The temperature effects on the pure metal suggest that σ_o relates to the ratio between the CRSS of prism and basal slip, against early suggestions that it should only relate to the CRSS for basal slip. Solid solution softening upon prism slip accounts for the minima in σ_o at ~ 0.5 at. pct in Mg-Zn and Mg-Gd alloys. In the concentrated alloys, solute-specific hardening effects upon slip and twinning lead to diverging behaviors: in Mg-Al and Mg-Zn, σ_o remains below that of pure Mg. Strong short-range order by Gd leads to a steep monotonic increase, and to a value larger in compression than in tension due to the activation of {10-11} twinning at high concentrations. The negative σ_o of the dilute Mg-Zn alloys is an artifact created by the tension/compression asymmetry stemming from the polar character of {10-12} twinning.

Thermodynamic optimization and calculation of phase diagrams of YbCl3-MCl （M=Na,K, Rb,Cs）

YbCl3-MCl （M = Na, K, Rb, Cs） systems were optimized and calculated using the CALPHAD （CALculation of PHAse Diagram） technique. The modified quasi-chemical model in the pair-approximation for short-range ordering was used to describe the Gibbs energies of liquid phase in the systems. On the basis of the measured phase diagram data and experimental thermodynamic properties, a series of thermodynamic functions were optimized and calculated through an interactive computer-assisted analysis. Furthermore, some reasonable discussions on the thermodynamic parameters for these strong interaction binary systems were carded out. The results showed that the optimized parameters and experimental data are thermodynamically self-consistent.

The role of β,γ,δ-substituent of dialkylphosphinic acids in HREE extraction and separation behaviors

Heavy rare earth element(HREE) separation has always been a great challenge.The kind of dialkylphosphinic acids is recognized as the third generation of organophosphorous acid extractants.However,detailed relationship between β-substituent(especially when it changes from H to methyl,and further to ethyl) and their extraction behaviors and selectivity for HREEs have rarely been reported.Besides,there are also few reports on effect of γ,δ-substituent on HREE extraction and separation.In this paper...     

Investigation into the Formation of Texture,Microstructure, and Anisotropy of Properties during Rolling Sheets of the Aluminum–Lithium 1420 Alloy

Results of investigations into the formation of the crystallographic orientation of the structure and anisotropy of properties during rolling sheets of the aluminum–lithium 1420 alloy of the Al–Mg–Li system are given. Hot-rolled billets of the 1420 alloy were cold-rolled with intermediate quenching according to the following schedule: 7.3 mm → 4.8 mm → 3.0 mm → 1.8 mm. The samples were selected after each passage to perform mechanical testing and analyze the structure using optical microscopy and diffractometry. A deformed fibrous structure and considerable anisotropy of mechanical properties is characteristic of sheets of all considered states. Herewith, the maximal plasticity is observed at an angle of 45° to the rolling direction. The character of anisotropy of properties formed at the hot-rolling stage is not varied during cold rolling. Sheets of the 1420 alloy have a sharp deformation texture at all rolling stages due to the conservation of the unrecrystallized structure. For example, when analyzing pole figures and preferential orientations, an increase in volume fractions of rolling texture is revealed (the slow one of the brass type and more rapid of the S type) with the rise of summary deformations of cold rolling. The recrystallization texture (of the R type) is present in small amounts only after hot rolling. The volume fraction of the texture-free component decreases with an increase in summary deformations. It is concluded based on these results that, in order to decrease the fraction of the deformation texture and lower anisotropy of properties in sheets of the 1420 alloy, it is first and foremost necessary to provide the running of recrystallization at the hot-rolling stage in order to fabricate the recrystallized hot-rolled billet for subsequent cold rolling.     

Thermodynamics of Fe-C-j （j=Al, Si, P, S） Melts

Based on a proposed method, the mathematical expressions between carbon solubility in Fe-C-j (j = Al, Si, P, S) melts and temperature were obtained. The expressions show the relation of the affecting factors of component j and temperature on carbon solubility, and the activity interaction coefficient of j upon carbon depends on atomic number, covalent radius and electro-negativity. The affecting factors of four elements on carbon solubility are all negative. There is a linear relationship between covalent radius and electro-negativity.
