A SUPPLEMENT TO MY PAPER ON REAL AND COMPLEX OPERATOR IDEALS

Abstract

We show that the main problem left open in [2] can be solved using the Banach spaces Z^α recently constructed by Kalton [1]. This gives an example of a complex operator ideal that has no real analogue. It thus shows the richer structure of complex operator ideals compared with the real ones.     

PROJECTIONS ON OPERATOR DUALS

Abstract

We discuss the existence of a projection with kernel K_b(E,F) ¹ (the annihilator of the quasi-compact operators) on the dual space of the space L _b,(E, F) of continous linear operators. Our results are proved in the context of Hausdorff locally convex spaces, but also provide extensions of recent results in the context of Banach spaces.     

SOME ASPECTS OF THE THEORY OF SYMMETRIC OPERATOR SPACES

Abstract

We discuss several aspects of the theory of symmetric Banach spaces of measurable operators, including their construction and certain topological and geometric properties. Particular emphasis is given to the role played by rearrangement inequalities.     

Extension of Locally Defined Indefinite Functions on Ordered Groups

We give a definition of -indefinite function of archimedean type, on an interval of an ordered group with an archimedean point. We say that has the indefinite extension property if every continuous -indefinite function of archimedean type, on an interval of , can be extended to a continuous -indefinite function on the whole group .We show that if a group is semi-archimedean and it has the indefinite extension property, then with the lexicographic order and the product topology has the indefinite extension property. As a corollary it is obtained that the groups and with the lexicographic order and the usual topologies, have the indefinite extension property.To Professor José R. Schur Complements in Krein Spaces

The aim of this work is to generalize the notions of Schur complements and shorted operators to Krein spaces. Given a (bounded) J-selfadjoint operator A (with the unique factorization property) acting on a Krein space and a suitable closed subspace of , the Schur complement of A to is defined. The basic properties of are developed and different characterizations are given, most of them resembling those of the shorted of (bounded) positive operators on a Hilbert space. Fixed point theorems for holomorphic mappings and operator theory in indefinite metric spaces

In this paper we establish several new results on the existence and uniqueness of a fixed point for holomorphic mappings and one-parameter semigroups in Banach spaces. We also present an application to operator theory on spaces with an indefinite metric.     

On L. Schwartz's Boundedness Condition for Kernels

In previous works we analysed conditions for linearization of Hermitian kernels. The conditions on the kernel turned out to be of a type considered previously by L. Schwartz in the related matter of characterizing the real linear space generated by positive definite kernels. The aim of the present note is to find more concrete expressions of the Schwartz type conditions: in the Hamburger moment problem for Hankel type kernels on the free semigroup, in dilation theory (Stinespring type dilations and Haagerup decomposability), as well as in multi-variable holomorphy. Prof. Tiberius Constantinescu died unexpectly on 29th of July 2005.     

Expandable network and covering properties for uniform Eberlein compacta

In this paper we characterize the class of uniform Eberlein compact spaces through a network condition and also in terms of covering properties for the square of the space.     

Sigma-locally uniformly rotund and sigma-weak Kadets dual norms

The dual X^∗ of a Banach space X admits a dual σ-LUR norm if (and only if) X^∗ admits a σ-weak^∗ Kadets norm if and only if X^∗ admits a dual weak^∗ LUR norm and moreover X is σ-Asplund generated.     

A CHARACTERIZATION OF COMPLEX LATTICE HOMOMORPHISMS ON BANACH LATTICE ALGEBRAS

Abstract

In this paper we present a characterization of complex lattice homomorphisms on Banach lattice algebras.     

Anderson localization and Lifshits tails for random surface potentials

We consider Schrödinger operators on L²(R^d) with a random potential concentrated near the surface R^d₁×{0}⊂R^d. We prove that the integrated density of states of such operators exhibits Lifshits tails near the bottom of the spectrum. From this and the multiscale analysis by Boutet de Monvel and Stollmann [Arch. Math. 80 (2003) 87-97] we infer Anderson localization (pure point spectrum and dynamical localization) for low energies. Our proof of Lifshits tails relies on spectral properties of Schrödinger operators with partially periodic potentials. In particular, we show that the lowest energy band of such operators is parabolic.     

H-ULTRABORNOLOGICAL SPACES

Abstract

In this paper we define a special type of H-locally convex space—H-ultrabornological space -. We shall characterize those H-locally convex spaces in terms of linear maps and of inductive limits.     

A MULTIPLICATION INEQUALITY IN COMPLEX BANACH LATTICE ALGEBRAS

Abstract

We present an alternative order theoretic proof for the fundamental result that |Z₁, Z₂ | ? |Z₁ 1 | Z₂ | with z₂ and z₂ elements of the complexification of an Archimedean uniformly complete Riesz algebra.     

Almost summing mappings

We introduce a general definition of almost p-summing mappings and give several concrete examples of such mappings. Some known results are considerably generalized and we present various situations in which the space of almost p-summing multilinear mappings coincides with the whole space of continuous multilinear mappings. Generalized resolvent matrices and spaces of analytic functions

We introduce triplet spaces for symmetric relations with defect index (1, 1) in a Pontryagin space. Representations of Pontryagin spaces by spaces of vector-valued analytic functions are investigated. These concepts are used to study 2×2-matrix valued analytic functions which satisfy a certain kernel condition.     

Pontryagin spaces of entire functions I

We give a generalization of L.de Branges theory of Hilbert spaces of entire functions to the Pontryagin space setting. The aim of this-first-part is to provide some basic results and to investigate subspaces of Pontryagin spaces of entire functions. Our method makes strong use of L.de Branges's results and of the extension theory of symmetric operators as developed by M.G.Krein.     

Analytic characterizations of Jordan chains by pole cancellation functions of higher order

In this paper the analytic characterization of generalized poles of operator valued generalized Nevanlinna functions (including the length of Jordan chains of the representing relation) is completed. In particular, given a Jordan chain of the representing relation of length ?, we show that there exists a pole cancellation function of order at least ?, and, moreover, the construction shows that it is of surprisingly simple form.     

Smooth points in some spaces of bounded operators

We determine the smooth points of certain spaces of bounded operatorsL(X,Y), including the cases whereX andY arel ^p -orc ₀-direct sums of finite dimensional Banach spaces or subspaces of the latter enjoying the metric compact approximation property. We also remark that the operators not attaining their norm are nowhere dense inL(X,Y) wheneverK(X,Y) is anM-ideal inL(X,Y).     

Pontryagin spaces of entire functions II

We continue the study of a generalization of L. de Branges's theory of Hilbert spaces of entire functions to the Pontryagin space setting. In this-second-part we investigate isometric embeddings of spaces of entire functions into spacesL ² () understood in a distributional sense and consider Weyl coefficients of matrix chains. The main task is to give a proof of an indefinite version of the inverse spectral theorem for Nevanlinna functions. Our methods use the theory developed by L. de Branges and the theory of extensions of symmetric operators of M.G.Krein.
