A simple fiber laser configuration based on a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is proposed for obtaining multi-wavelength oscillation at room temperature, in which a Sagnac loop mirror is used as the wavelength selective component. The SOA has a flat gain of approximately 23dB within a bandwidth of 12 nm at a small input signal power. The loop mirror was constructed using a 3dB coupler and polarization maintaining fiber (PMF). The output spectrum of the proposed laser can be adjusted by controlling the bias current of the SOA and is quite stable at room temperature. At a bias current of 150 mA, six lines are obtained with at least ?40 dBm output power and 25dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The channel spacing and number of lines is determined by the length of polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) used in the loop mirror. The channel spacing of the proposed laser is 1.49 nm with a PMF 3 m. The multi-wavelength comb output can also be tuned by adjusting the operating temperature of the SOA. The multi-wavelength laser has the advantage of a simple configuration, stability at room temperature, a broad wavelength band, and no need for optical pump lasers.  相似文献

For the first time to the authors' knowledge, we have demonstrated how thermally controlled overcoupled fused fiber couplers and fiber loop mirrors based on these couplers can be used as broadband tuning elements in a fiber laser cavity. No bulk optical elements play any role in this technique. Temperature tuning the coupler results in a shift in the coupling ratio or in the effective output coupler transmission. For a fixed pump source, and for a given laser cavity, this shift causes the lasing wavelength to shift. We have continuously tuned an Er silica fiber laser in this manner over the range of 1527-1570 nm in a ring configuration, and, using a fiber loop mirror with these couplers in a linear Tm silica fiber laser cavity, we have achieved more than 50-nm broadband tuning over the range of 1850-1910 nm. The tuning range and the sensitivity to temperature depend on the degree of overcoupling of the loop mirror coupler.  相似文献

We designed and demonstrated what we believe to be a novel sensor for simultaneous measurement of stress and temperature. A fiber Bragg grating is flatly adhered to the surface of a loop thin-wall section beam. The theoretical analyses and the experimental results show that both the central wavelength shift and the chirped bandwidth of the grating reflection spectrum have a linear relationship with the stress and the temperature, respectively, and the slopes of them are different. Therefore, the temperature and stress can be discriminated by interrogating the chirped fiber grating. Moreover, we also investigated the strain of the loop thin-wall section beam, and the results show that the strain is cosine proportional to the double positional angle.  相似文献

A novel high sensitivity optical fiber current sensor (OFCS) based on polarization diversity and a Faraday rotation mirror cavity is proposed and demonstrated. Comparing with single-channel detection in a conventional OFCS, a signal power gain of 6?dB and a signal-to-noise ratio improvement of over 30?dB have been achieved in the new scheme. The cavity amplifies magnetic field-induced nonreciprocal phase modulation, while the Faraday rotation mirrors suppress the reciprocal birefringence. A linear response is obtained for current amplitude as low as several mA at an AC frequency of 1?kHz.  相似文献

分析了基于Michelson干涉解调技术的光纤激光器水声传感的原理,在一段掺铒光纤中写入具有π相移的光纤光栅构成光纤激光器,水声压力作用在激光器上引起激光工作波长的变化;采用基于3×3耦合器的偏振无关的非平衡光纤Michelson干涉仪将激光波长变化转化为干涉仪的相位变化;干涉仪的输出由光电探测器转换后使用DSP进行信号解调.针对3×3耦合器分光比不对称的问题,本文提出利用实时调整幅度的2路干涉信号进行解调的方案,该方案不需要3×3耦合器有严格的分光比,消除了外界环境对解调输出的非线性影响.水声探测实验表明,光纤激光器水声传感系统的声压灵敏度为-166.5 dB(参考值1 rad/μPa),解调结果与水声信号具有良好的线性关系.  相似文献

提出一种非对称窄带光纤环形反射镜结构的可调谐掺铒光纤激光器。980nm泵浦光对掺铒有源光纤进行抽运,高双折射光纤、偏振控制器(PC)和光纤耦合器构成窄带光纤反射镜,窄带光纤反射镜和普通光纤反射镜组成激光谐振腔,利用窄带光纤反射镜工作带宽纳米量级的特性得到单纵模激光。调整偏振控制器改变反射镜对不同波长的反射率,实现可变波长的激光输出。实验表明,该激光器的工作带宽为8nm,120mW泵浦光条件下最大输出功率为4mW,3dB带宽(脉冲的半高宽度)小于0.2nm,边模抑制比为20dB以上,在1527nm~1535nm的波长范围内观察到稳定激光输出。  相似文献

This paper reports a 1x8 fiber-optic switch based on an innovative waveguide converter and a micro torsion mirror. A compact 9-fiber collimator is implemented with the waveguide converter. With the micro torsion mirror aligned to the 9-fiber collimator, light from the central fiber can be steered to any of the other 8 fibers. The introduction of the waveguide converter enables a smaller and faster micro torsion mirror. The switch shows good performance, insertion loss, nonuniformity, and cross talk is <3.02 dB, <0.4 dB, and <-35 dB respectively. Improvements of performance are expected after further optimization.  相似文献

An all-fiber magneto-optic Sagnac interferometer (AFMOSI) utilizing intrinsic Faraday effects in highly nonlinear fibers (HNLFs) is presented for the first time (to our knowledge). The performance of the AFMOSI was investigated theoretically by use of the transfer matrix approach. The theoretical results were verified by the experiment employing an all-fiber magnetic-optic cell that consists of a 30 m long HNLF and a 92 mm diameter toroid coil. Our experiments show that, when the linear birefringence of the AFMOSI is adjusted to 0, the change of the transmission can be over 10 dB as the magnetic induction B increases from 0 to 180 Gs. The sensitivity of the AFMOSI is determined by the coupling ratio of the fiber coupler, the loss of the loop, and the length of the HNLF. Most importantly, the linear birefringence of the AFMOSI can be obtained by evaluating its performance of magnetic field response. This is very useful for studying the influence of the linear birefringence on the performance of a nonlinear optical loop mirror that is controlled by the Faraday effect.  相似文献

A technique that allows a fiber optic Sagnac interferometer based microwave photonic device to be implemented using non-polarization maintaining components inside the Sagnac loop while still obtaining an output that is insensitive to changes in environmental conditions is presented. It is based on inserting the non-polarization maintaining components in between a polarization beam combiner and a Faraday rotator mirror inside the loop. The technique also introduces a phase bias to the light propagating inside the loop. Experimental results demonstrate that the discretely and continuously tunable Sagnac loop based signal processors implemented using non-polarization maintaining components have an environmentally insensitive frequency response.  相似文献

Stable picosecond soliton transmission is demonstrated numerically by use of concatenated gain-distributed nonlinear amplifying fiber loop mirrors (NALMs). We show that, as compared with previous soliton transmission schemes that use conventional NALMs or nonlinear optical loop mirror and amplifier combinations, the present scheme permits a significant increase of loop-mirror (amplifier) spacing. The broad switching window of the present device and the high-quality pulses switched from it provide a reasonable stability range for soliton transmission. We also show that a soliton self-frequency shift can be suppressed by the gain-dispersion effect in the amplifying fiber loop and that soliton-soliton interactions can be partially reduced by using lowly dispersive transmission fibers.  相似文献

We have theoretically and experimentally investigated an optical fiber with circular polarization modes on one end and linear polarization modes on the other end. We call this fiber a polarization-transforming fiber because the local modes, or polarization states they represent, are converted from linear to circular, and visa versa, in the fiber. We have developed and implemented a postdraw process for making polarization-transforming fiber samples 30 mm long with losses less than 1 dB and a polarization-mode conversion from circular to linear greater than 20 dB. Also, we have modeled and measured the dependence on wavelength and temperature of polarization-transforming fiber samples. The measured normalized wavelength dependence of a sample fiber 30 mm long was approximately 1.4 x 10(-4) nm(-1), and the measured normalized temperature dependence was approximately 6 x 10(-4) degrees C(-1). These values are better in some cases than values for conventional high-birefringent fiber quarter-wave plates.  相似文献

A method to realize room-temperature operation of a multifrequency Er-doped fiber laser with low-frequency shift feedback placed within a linear laser cavity is theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Simultaneous multiwavelength lasing with 0.5 nm wavelength spacing is experimentally demonstrated by applying a sinusoidal signal of 10 kHz to a fiber phase modulator inserted within the linear cavity to prevent single wavelength steady-state oscillation. In the linear cavity, an all-polarization-maintaining fiber Sagnac loop is used as a periodic filter, and a single-mode fiber loop with a polarization controller is used as a partial reflector and also as an output port.  相似文献

A concept for optical temperature sensing based on the differential spectral reflectivity/transmittance from a multilayer dielectric edge filter is described and demonstrated. Two wavelengths, λ(1) and λ(2), from the spectrum of a broadband light source are selected so that they are located on the sloped and flat regions of the reflection or transmission spectrum of the filter, respectively. As temperature variations shift the reflection or transmission spectrum of the filter, they change the output power of the light at λ(1), but the output power of the light at λ(2) is insensitive to the shift and therefore to the temperature variation. The temperature information can be extracted from the ratio of the light powers at λ(1) to the light at λ(2). This ratio is immune to changes in the output power of the light source, fiber losses induced by microbending, and hence modal-power distribution fluctuations. The best resolution of 0.2 °C has been obtained over a range of 30-120 °C. Based on such a basic temperature-sensing concept, a wavelength-division-multiplexed, temperature-sensing system is constructed by cascading three sensing-edge filters that have different cutoff wavelengths along a multimode fiber. The signals from the three sensors are resolved by detecting the correspondent outputs at different wavelengths.  相似文献

Fiber-loop ring-down spectroscopy (FLRDS) is a recently developed absorption spectroscopic technique suitable for very small liquid samples. It is based on measurements of the optical decay constant of laser intensity in a loop made of optical waveguide material. This decay constant changes as small liquid samples containing absorbing species are introduced into the loop. In this report, it is demonstrated that one can also obtain the optical decay constant using a continuous wave laser beam that is intensity modulated and then coupled into an optical fiber loop. The inherent exponential decay in the fiber loop introduces a phase shift of the light emitted from the loop with respect to the pumping beam. By measuring this phase shift, one can readily determine the concentration of the analyte introduced between the two fiber ends and a model is established to describe the relationship. It is demonstrated that this technique, dubbed phase-shift fiber-loop ring-down spectroscopy (PS-FLRDS), is well suited as an absorption detector for any flow system in which the optical absorption path is limited by the instrument architecture. By measuring the phase angle as a function of concentration of 1,1'-diethyl-4,4'-dicarbocyanine iodide in dimethyl sulfoxide, the detection limit was determined as approximately 6 microM for a 30-40-microm absorption path. A temporal resolution of approximately 100 ms was demonstrated by a rapid displacement of the solutions between the two fiber ends. Proof-of-principle use of the PS-FLRDS detection in capillary flow systems using a commercial four-way microcross established that the alignment of the fiber and the capillary can be made simple and effective, while retaining both a low detection limit and a fast response.  相似文献

This work presents an optical sensor based on a highly birefringent photonic crystal fiber (Hi-Bi PCF) loop mirror. The length of the sensing head is 380 mm and its corresponding wavelength spacing between two interferometer minima is 8 nm. The optical sensor was characterized in strain and in temperature with an uncoated Hi-Bi PCF and with an acrylate coated Hi-Bi PCF. Different results for strain and temperature sensitivity were obtained. Relatively to the strain measurement, the sensor with the uncoated Hi-Bi PCF presents slightly less sensitivity (1.11 ) when compared with coated Hi-Bi PCF (1.21 ). For the temperature measurement and with the uncoated Hi-Bi PCF, the optical sensor is insensitive to temperature (0.29 pm/K).  相似文献

利用耦合模理论对光纤熔锥声光器件进行了数值模拟,得到了全光纤声光衰减器传输谱和可调谐性。分析了带宽与声波长、耦合长度的关系。数值分析结果表明,声波在光纤熔锥中引起的轴向电介质微扰、耦合长度和工作波长都会对器件的传输谱产生影响,选择合适的设计参数可以制作较为理想的声光衰减器。实验上获得了损耗小于0.2dB,带宽大于200nm,动态范围为20dB的单模光纤熔锥可变衰减器,所得结果与理论分析相符合。这种器件可用于光纤通信及光纤传感。  相似文献

We propose and demonstrate a highly flexible fiber laser capable of generating stable multiwavelength picosecond and single wavelength femtosecond pulses by using a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror and a contrast ratio tunable comb filter. In the multiwavelength lasing regime, up to 11-wavelength stable mode-locked pulses in 3 dB bandwidth with a channel spacing of 0.8 nm were obtained. While in the single wavelength with broadband spectrum lasing regime, the fiber laser emitted 576 fs soliton pulse. Through changing the contrast ratio of the comb filter, the conversion between the multiwavelength picosecond and single wavelength femtosecond pulsed operations could be efficiently achieved.  相似文献

We describe and demonstrate an adaptive optical system based on the combination of a micromachined membrane deformable mirror and the stochastic parallel gradient descent control algorithm. This compact and relatively inexpensive adaptive optical system is used to maximize the coupling of a distorted laser beam into a single-mode optical fiber. The coupling efficiency is improved by 12 dB, and the coupling efficiency after correction is 64% of the diffraction-limited coupling efficiency.  相似文献
